Making your own Bias Tape

Making your own Bias Tape

I've been enjoying sewing lately and if you sew then you know about the many uses for bias tape. The only thing is that if you purchase it pre-made it only comes in solid colors and there is usually only 3 yds. per package. So, making your own has many advantages. It's more economical, more variety and you can make as much as you need!

Here I have rolled up my new bias yardage on empty toilet paper rolls.

I've recently found 3 new methods for making my own bias tape. With the old method you had to cut your bias strips and sew each one end to end on the bias to get your yardage which is why until now I chose not to make my own. With the 3 new methods you are making a continuous bias strip without having to cut and sew each strip individually. Genius!

Here I've flattened the toilet paper roll and wrapped my new double fold bias tape around it.

New Method #1
This was the first new method I tried and it's very similar to method #2 except that you have to start with a square of fabric. So, you will have more waste fabric with this method than the other two methods. I found this YouTube video that explains this method very well.

New Method #2
This link above explains this method very well and has lots of other great information. This method is much like method #1 except that you can use any length of fabric and you're not limited to a square. Plus there is no wasted fabric. This is my favorite method! I got 7 1/2 yds. of continuous 2" wide bias from a 18" x 22" piece of fabric. The amount of yardage you get depends on the length of fabric you start with.

New Method #3

This method by far is the most magical and amazing way to cut your strips. You will think that there's no way this is going to work. However, it does work! You do need to use a square of fabric for this method. You should also leave a minimum of 4" uncut at the top and no more than 6" uncut at the top. This will greatly reduce the zag of the fabric edges where you join the cuts for the continuous strip. This zag isn't that noticeable and won't be noticeable at all once you fold your strips. If it weren't for this slight zag and having to start with a square of fabric, this would be my favorite way. Both times I used this method I got 9 1/2 yds. of 2" wide continuous bias. I was using 44" wide cotton.

With any method you use to cut your bias strips you'll still need to fold and press your bias strips to make your single or double fold bias tape. This isn't difficult but is a bit tedious and time consuming. There are bias tape tips that are very easy to use and will do the single fold for you. The strip goes in one end and comes out the other end folded over on each side. You iron as you pull it through. You then have single fold bias tape. To make it double fold you then fold and press the single fold in half with one side a tad off set to make it easier to sew on your project.

I've used the bias tip tools up to now but I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchased the Simplicity Bias Tape Maker Machine. You can find lots of YouTube videos about this machine. I found mine on eBay brand new and for less than half of the retail price! I'll let you know in a later post how I like it. I hope you've found this info helpful and that you'll be inspired to try making your own bias tape.

Summer Fun

I have been enjoying my new Cricut Air! I still have and use my Cameo but loved the idea of having a pen and blade in at the same time. The Cricut was a gift from my husband. He had heard me talking about it and contemplating getting one. He's so sweet! Anyway, here's one of the shirts I made for my daughter for her birthday. I'm just hoping she doesn't see this post before it arrives.

I used silver glitter HTV for the words and white glitter for the panthers features. The blue is Siser Easyweed HTV. The tank is a racer back relaxed fit.

Oh, and I'm loving finding new fonts to use with HTV on shirts! I've been buying my fonts from this site below for awhile now. I love that they have free lite versions you can try out. The lite versions are just for personal use but the regular versions have full commercial use.

Pocket Pages

I've been having a lot of fun with pocket pages and have created some very cute pocket page SVG's. The ones I love most are the personalized ones! I'll be listing these for sale soon at my Etsy, Craftsy and ArtFire shops.

I'm hosting a "Card Swap" this coming Thursday at my home and so I made a pocket page for each of my guest. I personalized them and also added some scrapping and crafty goodies.

I have been enjoying stamping more than ever before! I have so many stamps that I'd never even used and more that I didn't use because I couldn't get them stamped perfectly. Then I found Misti! A Dozen Crimped Friend Cards

It's been awhile since I've posted anything here on this blog, but believe me I've still been crafting! I love to knit and crochet too and I go through spells where I seem to only knit or only scrap!

I've been making cards lately using the Sizzix card dies and have been really enjoying those. I usually cut cards by hand or with SVG files using my Cameo so to use my Big Shot and dies is way out of my comfort zone. LOL I'll post some photo's of those cards later and share my thoughts on what I think.

For today I wanted to share this card. Isn't it gorgeous!

Brandy at www.brandyscards.com has great videos on her blog and YouTube channel. This is one of her recent cards and you can find the link to this specific card here.

I didn't have the phrase stamp set or flower stamps she used so I improvised. I actually made a file using Microsoft Word for the phrase. I am sharing that file in PDF format with you if you want to make your own cards. You can find that download at the end of this post. I made the pieces larger so you can cut them 3 1/2" by 2 1/2".

I used another flower set and ended up adding two instead of one like Brandy did on her cards since my flower stamp was a bit smaller. I didn't want my base card black so I made it white. I used a grass green ink pad for my crinkled piece and added a rhinestone to the center of the blue flower and a dot of dimensional pearls to the center of the yellow one.This card was a lot of fun and I ended up making 12!

Artsy Paper Cuff Bracelet

Lately I have enjoyed learning how to make paper beads and I've been rolling like crazy! I'll soon be sharing some of the projects that I'll be making using my beads. However, today I'd like to share this paper bracelet cuff I made.

This was a lot of fun to make. I got my inspiration from a video by Ross Barbera. You can click here for that Part One video. I have no watercolor painting expertise, so I chose to use scrapbook paper. I picked out some of my favorite patterns and then cut them out using my Silhouette Cameo. After gluing 2 together for the top and 2 together for the bottom I moved on to the inside papers.

I wanted my backs to be as smooth as the fronts so I chose to use another method for making the channel for the cording to run through. I learned this method from watching this YouTube video by Jennibellie. I cut all of the inside pieces using my Silhouette Cameo as well. This saved a lot of time, however it still took alot of time to glue all of the pieces together. I used 4 pieces glued on top of each other for the insides. That is what gave me the nice flat backs. Notice I also signed my artwork! LOL

To give you an idea of what the pieces inside look like. Here's a pic to the left. I had to glue those 4 smaller pieces top and bottom together and the middle 4 square pieces together.

To give each piece it's slight curve I used my bone folder to burnish them over the side of a glass jar right after applying the glue. Then I set them aside to dry. After letting all of the pieces dry thoroughly I used some small ink pads I had and rubbed those along the edges of each piece. I slid some wire through each channel which helped me to hold each piece as I applied the glaze.

I used Triple Thick and put one coat on the inside and edges and 2 coats on the outside. Next I used a beading needle to slide through each channel top and bottom and guided the black hemp cord through each. This is when I tried it on around my wrist to see if the cording needed any adjusting. I cut a small section of a wooden dowel and drilled 2 holes to slide the cord through and knotted each end. I applied a small amount of clear glue to each knot and my cuff was complete!
You can't tell by the pictures but the pieces are rock hard! You wouldn't think so since it's made of paper would you?

Although this first cuff took me a bit of time, I know I'll be making others. I have ideas spinning around in my head. I hope you enjoyed this post and it will inspire you to try your hand at making some paper jewelry!

I wanted to share my latest vinyl project. I saw this on Pinterest today and knew I just had to make this for my washer and dryer. Thank you Allison Horton for this cute idea! You can see her's here. Too cute! Now, I smile when I am doing the laundry...and who smiles when doing laundry? LOL

Maple Manor Spooky House

It's been a while since I have done any serious cutting! I've been making cards like crazy but have not really cut any projects using my Black Cat Cougar machine. I love to cut 3D projects but I've also always wanted to do PnC (print and cut) and I never could get my cougar to work right for PnC. :( So, after many trys and fails I decided to purchase the Silhouette Cameo as it's known for easy PnC!

The paper pack I found at Michaels also had a great page for the back of my house. It gave the back opening a little extra 3D effect too. Overall, a great project, made even easier by cutting it with the Silhouette Cameo!

Pinwheel Spinner Cards

"Let's make some Pinwheel Spinner Cards"

I had a friend over to my home yesterday to make some cards. We each made 12 of these cards. TOO CUTE! It was so much fun having a friend to help with the assembly of the cards.

After we decided on the papers to use we got busy with our assembly line. We first cut all the pieces of our cardstock and decided what went with what.

Then while she was adhering the card pieces and punching the slot for the pinwheel to slide in, I assembled the little pinwheels.

After that, we each stamped our own sentiment on the front and added our pinwheels. All that was left was to add this completed piece to the front of a white A2 sized card. The only thing we changed was that we didn't find it necessary to double stack the dimensionals with the one's we were using.

The one thing we forgot to do was to add texture by running it through the BigShot.
However, they still turned out GREAT!

I cut my pinwheels using Make the Cut! As, I didn't have the Sizzlets die.

an SVG pinwheel file for those of you that prefer an SVG.

Tip about this file...I found it easier to only have the center hole cut with my cutter. I then just used my piercing tool to make holes in every other corner. Then just place your piercing tool in the center hole coming up from the bottom and using it's point grab each of those corner holes. Then push down all the way on your piercing tool, pinch off and add your brad. Easy peasy!

My Craft Room Revisited

My Updated Craft Room

I hope everyones new year is off to a great start! I updated and re-arranged my craft room a couple of months ago and am just now finding the time to share with you. Michael's Arts and Crafts had a 50% off sale of the white Jetmax storage cubes and so I took advantage and got some of those. I really like them and although I've filled some of them I still have many that are empty so I'll definitely have space for new stuff! My sweet husband got me all of the Jetmax shelving and the roll cart at the door.

The best part of the update, was getting a huge monitor so that when I use Make the Cut (MTC) I'll be able to see what I'm doing. I bought this monitor from my mom and then purchased a holder so that it attaches to the table but keeps it up off of the table so it takes up no table space. I have a small little netbook and now I just keep it closed underneath my table and use this second monitor as it's monitor. Works wonderfully! I just use a cordless mouse and purchased a little cordless keyboard for those times I need to type something in MTC.

Also, when my son visited home for Christmas he fixed my internet connection back in my craft room. For some reason it wouldn't work wireless or even when I hooked it up with a direct cable. Justin figured it out and now I have internet which is useful when using the Lettering Delights ART function within MTC! Plus, I was taking my Maxtor drive back and forth from my craft room to my main pc in another room when updating my cut files. Now, I can just get them directly from the other pc or online at Dropbox or Box or SugarSync!

Although I use this room mainly for scrappin', I also knit and crochet. So, the room has a yarn closet and fiber goodness here and there. You'll notice these huge fabric yarn balls in the middle of the room as I have just started crocheting these fabulous crocheted rugs using these fabric strips. They are so soft to stand on barefoot and are one of my favorite fiber projects.

I just wanted to say "Thank You" to those of you that have followed this blog this past year and to wish you a very Happy New Year! I haven't posted here on a regular basis, but hope to do better in the coming new year! I truly love scrappin' and cutting on my Black Cat Cougar, but I also love knitting and crochet! I tend to go back and forth between my crafting loves! I still use and love MTC and the updates to MTC just keep coming that I find it hard to keep up. LOL

Stationary Box

I saw this box awhile back here at this blog and had been wanting to make it. So, with the Christmas in July crop going on at the Black Cat USA forum, it was the perfect opportunity to get it done. When I first saw the box on Dannie's blog my immediate thought was to make it Make the Cut friendly. I've had the MTC file ready to go and so the only thing left to do was make it!

One of the things I changed was to make the lid look like a roof and to place a house facade on the front of the box. This turned my box into a little house hiding stationary goodies inside. I replaced the note pad with a tiny 2012 calendar that I printed and cut from here.

For the tags I made 12 using the #14 tag from the Basic Tags set from Lettering Delights and printed out the 12 days of Christmas from this file, cut them apart and adhered them to each tag. You can download my MTC file below. All files and links included in MTC file!
