How to Make This Cute Halloween Card

Step 1: Create the Halloween Card Base

Begin with a white card base. Use a corner rounder on the card base if desired to give the card its soft, rounded appearance. For a standard A2 card, a 4¼” × 5½” card base works beautifully for this design.

Step 2: Create the Spooky Background & Glowing Halloween Moon

Cut a piece of Pop-Tone Grapesicle same size as your card front and adhere it to the card base. Next die cut a Pop-Tone Black Licorice panel. Use a rounded corner mat die to create the rounded edges and stitched-looking detail around the perimeter. Then use a fun Tree and Owl die to cut a window into the panel.

I cut a small cresent moon and a smaller panel from DCS Light Yellow. For an extra spooky glow, use Distress Oxide Fossilized Amber and Dried Marigold on the panel of DCS Light Yellow around portions of the moon. Blend the ink lightly from the darker to lighter and around the edges of the moon, keeping the center brighter. This creates the appearance of a glowing yellow Halloween moon against the dark sky.

Step 3: Add the Spooky Tree Silhouette

This is where the Halloween magic really happens!

Layer the black tree branches over the yellow moon. The contrast between the black cardstock and bright yellow moon creates a dramatic silhouette effect. This technique is perfect for creating a spooky Halloween card background without needing complicated coloring or stamping.

Step 4: Create the Cute Halloween Ghost & the “BOO” Sentiment

Cut the ghost from DCS Canvas Textured Smoke. The subtle texture of the cardstock gives the ghost a fun fabric-like appearance. Use small pieces of cardstock to create the ghost’s facial features. For the eyes and mouth I used Pop-Tone Black Licorice. DCS Canvas Textured Pearl Green Curry works perfectly for the glasses. Use DCS Textured Flame Tree Orange to create the BOO sentiment. The orange lettering coordinates beautifully with traditional Halloween colors while standing out against the pale ghost.

Use Distress Oxide Hickory Smoke to add subtle shading to the ghost and other gray elements. These small ink details help the individual die cuts look less flat and give your handmade Halloween card a more finished appearance.

Attach the letters directly to the ghost using Bearly Art Glue. For additional dimension, you can layer multiple die-cut versions of the letters together before attaching them. Layer the pieces together and attach the ghost to the center of the moon using foam dots. The dimensional adhesive helps the ghost pop forward from the background.

Step 5: Assemble the Layers & Add the Halloween Details

Once all your pieces are prepared, begin assembling the card.

Start with the background the spooky tree silhouette. Then add the ghost using foam dots so it sits above the moon and tree branches. Finish with the your moon.

Now it’s time for the little details that bring your Halloween card idea to life! Add your clay star embellishments throughout the night sky. Use a mixture of colors and sizes to create the look of twinkling stars. You can also add the small bat clay bit for another spooky Halloween detail. Place embellishments strategically around the moon rather than clustering everything in one area.

Card Base & Layers

Firstly, grab a Classic Crest 110# Solar White card base. These are pre-scored and a huge timesaver. I have both the 110# and 80# weights in my stash and use them frequently.

Secondly, cut 1/4″, 1/2″ and 3/4″ strips from each of the following colors:
Pop Tone Tangy Orange
Bazzill Basics Peach
Lessebo Sunset Orange and Lessebo Bubble Gum Pink
Pink Tutu

Additionally, cut an inside layering panel at 4″ x 5-1/4″ from the Pop Tone Tangy Orange.

Thirdly, cut two layering panels from Classic Crest 80# Solar White. One at 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ for the front, and one at 3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″ for the inside.

Create Striped Panels for Bold and Bright Friendship Card

Apply a strong adhesive (or adhesive sheet) to the face of the larger white front panel. Randomly place the colored strips in diagonal fashion covering the entire panel, and trim the edges. Likewise, use several leftover pieces and randomly place those diagonally across the top of the smaller white inside panel. Trim the edges of that panel as well. Afterwards, place gold pinstripe stickers near the top of the wider strips on both panels and trim the edges.

Add Florals

Add the puffy floral stickers to the panels.

Stamp Sentiments

Using a typography type stamp set, stamp sentiments on both panels in dark blue ink.

Complete Bold and Bright Friendship Card

Adhere both panels to the card base. The final step is to affix a few sequins to the card front.

Creating the Colorful Leaves

First, I die cut about 50-60 leaves from White Cardstock using a leaf die set and my manual die cut machine. Then, I separated them into 6 different piles, ensuring an equal number of leaves per pile. Next, I applied inks to each of the piles using blending brushes. I used Distress Oxide inks in the colors of Worn Lipstick, Barn Door, Seedless Preserves, Salvaged Patina, and Spiced Marmalade. I also used a 49 and Market ink in the color Pineapple.

Building the Colorful Leaves Layout

To create the layout, I first cut out a circle from the center of the leaf pattern paper.

Next, I adhered the leaves down in a circular pattern to the White Cardstock. I then adhered the pattern paper down to White Cardstock. This gave the appearance that the leaves were peeking out from under the pattern paper. I kept the same color leaves together and layered them to give dimension and depth.

Then, I placed my photograph with a floral frame in the center of the layout. Finally, I opted to create a tone-on-tone look by layering up similar-colored die cut, foam sticker, and puffy sticker leaves around the photograph .

To create additional texture to the layout, I opted to add hand stitching to the title using white embroidery thread.

Hi everyone! It’s Jessica here. Spooky season is right around the corner, can you believe it? I have a monochrome Halloween card idea to share with you today. The supplies are minimal and it’s beginner friendly, too! 

Step 1

The focal point of today’s card are these adorable cats dressed in Halloween costumes, and they are from Mama Elephant’s Meowlloween stamp set. I decided to stamp them on Stardream Metallic 5 x 7 Onyx cardstock as little black cats. I stamped the images with VersaMark Dazzle ink. After that, I heat embossed the images with silver embossing powder and fussy cut them with scissors. 

Step 2

Then, I picked a patterned paper from the Chalkboard Prints 6×6 cardstock pad and trimmed it to 3 ¾’’ x 5’’. There are a lot of great patterns in this paper pad that are black and white, and perfect for Halloween cards. The Stardream Metallic Onyx cardstock is also used as the card base. 

Step 3

Since the focal images and background are both black, adding a piece of vellum would really help the black kitties stand out against the dark background. I trimmed a piece of Curious Translucent vellum to a width of 4 ½’’, and tore the edges by hand. This is one of my favorite ways to layer with vellum and I like the look and organic feel of the torn edges. For the sentiment, I picked a classic “Happy Halloween” stamp from Brutus Monroe’s Occasional Greetings set. I stamped it with VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink on Classic Crest Solar White cardstock.

Step 4

Finally, let’s adhere all of the elements together. I mounted the black cats and background panel with foam tape, and adhered the sentiment strip and vellum piece with Tear-It Tape. A few rhinestones were also added with On-Point Glue, and the monochrome Halloween card is complete!

The tool chest

To begin, I cut out the tool chest pieces using Cougar White 110lb cardstock, Environment Desert Storm cardstock, and Bright Foil Silver cardstock.

I utilized a brush to remove the dots and a wax positioner to help place the tiny pieces while adhering. Obviously, those would be incredibly tedious tasks without the tools.

And, of course, I used my favorite Cougar White A2 Pre-Scored Base to mount the tool chest on.

Coloring The critters

Admittedly, coloring up the cute mice was my favorite part of this process. Notice how I left the images in my MISTI as I colored them with Copics? I regularly do this as it allows me to:

• 1. stamp images with alcohol ink-friendly Memento ink,
• 2. color them up with Copics,
• 3. then restamp them with Versafine Clair Nocturne.

Personally, I love the bolder look (right column) versus without (bottom middle column).

The Tools & Banner

Since this is a masculine card, I largely used primary colors to cut out the tools and banners.

• Tools: Pop Tone Red Hot, DCS Discount Sand Castle Tan, and Bright Foil Silver cardstocks
• Pennant Banner: Lessebo Misty Blue cardstock
• Sentiment Banner: Pop Tone Wild Cherry cardstock

Subsequently, I used Catherine Pooler inks to sponge some of the diecuts for added color variation and depth.

On second thought, maybe my favorite part was placing the tools and mice. They’re so very cute!

When you take on detailed paper piecing, having cardstock that die-cuts with razor-sharp edges is absolutely essential. Consequently, I pulled a gorgeous palette of autumn cardstocks directly from CutCardStock to assemble this design. I selected Canvas Vanilla Bean Brown to serve as the intricate, textured floral frame. Next, I brought in Astrobright Solar Yellow, DCS Textured Adobo Orange, and DCS Red Pepper to piece together the warm petals. To complete the card, I used shimmering CCS Gold Glitter Cardstock for the flower centers, all assembled on a crisp base of Classic Crest Smooth Solar White 130 lb.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Die Cutting the Outline Frame and Colored Pieces

To begin, I cut the full Crafty Meraki Lenten Rose Die from Canvas Vanilla Bean Brown cardstock. This intricate die-cut outline serves as the dark skeleton for our entire card front. Next, I ran the same die through my machine using Astrobright Solar Yellow, DCS Textured Adobo Orange, and DCS Red Pepper cardstock to create all the colorful puzzle pieces. Furthermore, I cut the die from CCS Gold Glitter Cardstock to gather all the tiny floral centers. Tip: Cut 1×1 inch pieces of Gold Cardstock to put right underneath the flower centers for die-cutting to save your cardstock.

2. Preparing the Base for Paper Piecing

Before piecing the petals together, I cut a backing panel from Classic Crest Smooth Solar White cardstock to match the size of the brown die-cut frame. I applied a thin layer of liquid adhesive across the back of the brown frame and adhered it directly onto the white panel. This creates a recessed grid where every colored piece can sit snugly in place.

3. Paper Piecing the Autumn Petals

Next, I began the paper-piecing process for this bold fall card. Using fine-tip tweezers and liquid glue, I inlaid the vibrant yellow petals into the top flower. Afterward, I aldded the rich Adobo Orange and DCS Red Pepper cardstock pieces to fill in the lower two blooms. The linen-like texture on the brown cardstock beautifully frames each brightly colored petal.

4. Adding the Glitter Flower Centers

The center dots of each flower are quite tiny and can be time-consuming to place. However, they are completely worth the extra effort for that subtle hint of metallic shine! I carefully inlaid the tiny CCS Gold Glitter pieces into the core of each bloom. The glitter catches the light instantly and gives the flowers an elegant, sparkling focal point.

5. Final Assembly

For the last step, I trimmed any excess edges from the panel and mounted it onto a mini slimline card base made from heavy-duty Classic Crest Smooth Solar White 130 lb. To finish the design quickly, I selected a pre-foiled and die-cut “Thinking Of You” sentiment from my craft stash and adhered it across the lower corner with Foam Tape.

Emboss the Card Base

We are in a Fall mode right now, so I had to start with Royal Sundance Kraft Cardstock. After trimming the cardstock to 4.25 x 5.5 inches, emboss the piece with the Concord and Ninth Bright Blossoms Die. Note: Emboss the die using the rubber mat plus the suggested sandwich for your die cut machine. We will also be die cutting the individual flowers and leaves as well. Attach the panel to a card base made with Desert Storm 100 lb. Cardstock.

Die Cut the Blooms and Leaves

Using the same Concord and Ninth Die, cut the blooms and flowers using Pop Tone Grape Jelly, Lessebo Lilac, DCS Flame Tree Orange and Galax Olive Green cardstocks or other fall colors of your choice. You will have multiple blooms to work with.

Use a sticky mat to hold the pieces in place to allow for additional shading with inks. Select darker shades for the color pieces and add shading by ink blending the colors in small circular motions. Start light, you can always add more color and depth.

Assemble the Card

Use the embossed lines to identify the placement for the blooms and leaves. Use white glue to attach the pieces to form a floral swag.

Using the die cut sentiment of choice, die cut using the Grape Jelly Cardstock. Glue to the lower left of the card and you have completed the first card.

Let’s Switch Seasons and make a Spring Card!

After completing the Fall card, you should have additional purple blooms left. Cut additional leaves from the Galax cardstock plus one cut with Pop Tone Grapesicle to provide an additional shade of purple.

Follow the steps listed above starting with an A2 Panel of Cougar 80 lb. White Cardstock. Use 110 lb Cougar White for the card base. Ink blend with coordinating colors of ink for dimension.

Once you have added the blooms and leaves, embellish the card with silver splatters and silver sequins. Use a sentiment created by embossing a sentiment with silver embossing powder. I like to pop up sentiments with foam strips.

Gathering Your Supplies

For this Repurposing & Recycling project, I used some old Maya Road packaging. You’ll also need some small candies such as Tic-Tacs or jellybeans, etc. You can gently clean the inside of the packaging since you’re adding a food product. This is also a great time to select your CutCardStock colors. Both projects use Cougar White Cardstock for the base, which explain further in just a bit. The additional colors I chose for my first project include Habanero Red, Lessebo Brick Orange, DCS Yellow Jacket Cardstock for the flowers, and Pop Tone Jelly Bean Green as well as Pop Tone Gum Drop Green for the leaves.

Next Steps

Take out the piece of sliding cardboard from the back of the packaging and trace it onto a piece of Cougar White Cardstock. I shaded these a bit by rubbing some ink to the edges that will match each repurposing and recycling project. The fun part of repurposing & recycling product packaging is that you probably already have some of these items sitting around in your craft room. If not, they’re not hard to find.

Adding the Candy

Open your Tic-Tacs (or other candy) and pour them into the open space where your product once was. Replace the small plastic cover that holds everything in place, and then just slide that pretty new piece of cardstock right in there where the product packaging once was. It’s already CUTE! But the fun part continues…..more CutCardStock.

Adding CutCardStock to the Product Packaging

Once everything was in place, I cut several die-cut flowers and leaves as well as a to/from tag. I layered them together with glue and started placing them on my project(s). Once you get down the process, you can create these FUN repurposing & recycling product packaging goodies pretty quickly. CutCardStock makes it SO colorful and lovely.

I added some bundled string to the top of each project before attaching the flowers and leaves. There’s really no “right way”, or wrong way for that matter, to decorate your projects. Just have FUN and always remember that CutCardStock is there to provide the perfect cardstocks every single time. What a joy that is, right? LOVE it.

My second project followed the exact same process. The only difference being the colors of CutCardStock that I chose for each. This second version uses Pop Tone Pink Lemonade Cardstock, Pop Tone Grapesicle Cardstock, DCS Plum Cardstock, and more of the Cougar White Cardstock. Which version is your favorite? This card is a great project for beginner and intermediate cardmakers alike. You’ll learn how to create visual interest with a small embossed panel, layer die-cut leaves, and use coordinating cardstock colors to make a simple card design feel finished and intentional.

Choose a Warm Fall Color Palette

For this card, I wanted the colors to feel like the leaves you might see during a beautiful autumn walk. I chose a combination of warm reds, golden yellows, greens, oranges, and deep brown.

The card base and several layers use Cougar White Smooth CardStock 110 lbs. Its clean white surface gives the fall colors plenty of room to stand out.

For the colorful die-cut leaves, I used DCS Habanero Red Cardstock, DCS Green Curry Cardstock, and DCS Yellow Jacket Cardstock. I also added Pop Tone Hot Fudge Cardstock and Pop Tone Orange Fizz Cardstock for additional contrast.

I picked these cardstocks for the color palette and the mix of textures. Together, they create a classic fall look while giving the finished card plenty of visual depth.

Create the A2 Card Base

Start with a sheet of Cougar White Smooth CardStock 110 lbs. Cut it to 4 1/4″ x 11″.

Score the cardstock at 5 1/2″ and fold it in half to create a top-folding A2 card measuring 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.

Using a heavier cardstock for the card base gives the finished handmade card a sturdy foundation. Be sure to use a bone folder or similar tool to create a crisp fold.

Add Texture with Dry Embossing

Next, cut two pieces of Cougar White Smooth CardStock 110 lbs.

• Cut one piece to 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.
• Cut the second piece to 1 1/2″ x 5″.

Use your Falling Leaves 3D Embossing Folder to add texture to the 1 1/2″ x 5″ panel. The raised leaf pattern creates a subtle background that adds interest without overwhelming the design.

Now bring in your matching fall-colored Distress Inks. Lightly apply ink over the embossed panel. Start with a small amount of ink and build the color gradually. This makes it easier to highlight the raised areas without covering the entire panel.

For the mat layer, cut DCS Yellow Jacket Cardstock to 1 3/4″ x 5 1/4″. Layer the embossed piece onto the yellow cardstock. The narrow border adds a pop of color and helps the textured panel stand out against the white card base.

Die Cut and Layer the Fall Leaves

Now comes the fun part!

Using DCS Habanero Red Cardstock, DCS Green Curry Cardstock, DCS Yellow Jacket Cardstock, Pop Tone Hot Fudge Cardstock, and Pop Tone Orange Fizz Cardstock, die cut several leaves with the Artsy Leaves Thinlits.

I also cut the small center pieces for the leaves. Rather than using every piece to build a single leaf, I scattered some of these small pieces around the card. This is an easy way to repeat the colors throughout the design.

When arranging the leaves, avoid placing everything in perfectly even rows. A little variation in direction and spacing makes the design feel more natural. You can also try overlapping a few pieces to create additional dimension.

Add the Thankful Sentiment

For the sentiment, I used the Simple Says Die Set to create a layered “Thankful for You” greeting.

Cut the shadow layer from Cougar White Smooth CardStock 110 lbs and cut the sentiment itself from Pop Tone Hot Fudge Cardstock. Layer the two pieces together so the white creates a clean outline around the dark brown sentiment.

This contrast helps the greeting remain easy to read while tying it visually to the darker fall leaves.

Assemble the Card

Once all the pieces are ready, arrange the embossed and matted panel on the card front. Add your die-cut leaves and small leaf centers around the design.

Use liquid glue for the pieces that need a flat finish. For selected elements, add thin foam adhesive to create a little extra dimension.

Finally, position the “Thankful for You” sentiment across the front of the card. The large script greeting becomes the focal point while the colorful leaves frame it and reinforce the fall theme.

The finished card measures 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″, making it a standard A2 handmade card.

A Simple Tip for More Dimension

One of my favorite things about this project is that you don’t need a lot of embellishments to create a dimensional card.

Let your cardstock and techniques do the work.

The dry embossed background adds texture. Ink blending emphasizes that texture. Die-cut leaves add color and shape. Layering the sentiment creates another level of dimension.

When all three techniques work together, even a relatively simple card layout can have plenty of visual interest.

Make It Your Own

This fall card design would be easy to adapt for other occasions. Try changing the sentiment for a birthday, friendship, Thanksgiving, or general thank-you card.

You can also change the leaf colors to match your favorite season. The same layout would work beautifully with spring greens, summer colors, or winter neutrals.

The key is to choose a small group of coordinating cardstock colors and repeat them throughout the card. That simple design decision helps everything feel connected.

Focal Background

Die cut a frame from Lessebo Pitch Black cardstock.

Cut a piece of Lessebo Aubergine cardstock to fit inside the frame. Emboss with a spider web embossing folder. Ink the raised portion of the embossing with a white ink pad.

Card Base

Prepare a 5 x 6 1/2 card base by cutting a piece of Classic Crest Solar White 110 lb cardstock to 10 x 6 1/2 inches. Score and fold at 5 inches along the 10 inch side.

Cut a 5 x 6 1/2 inch piece of Lessebo Aubergine cardstock to cover card base. a piece of Lessebo Brick Orange cardstock is cut to 4 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches for matting.

Completing the Design

Adhere the frame to card. Insert and adhere the embossed panel.

Add the focal pieces.

Cut a piece of Lessebo Brick Orange and a strip of Lessebo Aubergine and adhere to the bottom of the frame. The sentiment pieces go on to complete.

I’m Carrianne, and I created a cheerful autumn card featuring a layered scarecrow, a textured leaf embossed background, and a warm fall color palette using CutCardStock papers. I combined embossing, die cutting, ink shading, and layered cardstock pieces to create a dimensional harvest scene full of character and charm.

The result is a playful fall card that highlights how a mix of cardstock colors, simple techniques, and thoughtful details can transform basic die cuts into a beautiful seasonal design.

Step 1: Emboss the Background

First, cut a panel of Crest Solar White cardstock to fit your card front. Next, emboss the panel using the Falling Leaves Embossing Folder. The crisp white cardstock beautifully showcases the embossed leaf design, creating plenty of texture without competing with the colorful scarecrow.

Step 2: Add Splatter

Once the embossing is complete, lightly splatter the panel to add movement and visual interest. Keep the splatter subtle so the embossed leaves remain the focal point of the background. This simple technique adds just the right amount of detail while maintaining a clean look.

Step 3: Die Cut and Shade the Scarecrow Pieces

Next, die cut all of the scarecrow pieces from your selected CutCardStock cardstock colors.

Before assembling the scarecrow, use a blending brush and coordinating ink to lightly shade the edges of the die-cut pieces. This easy step adds depth and dimension, helping each layer stand out once assembled.

Step 4: Assemble the Scarecrow

Next, assemble the scarecrow by layering the die-cut pieces together. Add each detail piece carefully to create dimension and bring the character to life.

Once assembled, the layered cardstock pieces create a fun fall focal point with plenty of texture and personality. The ink shading helps highlight each layer and gives the scarecrow added depth.

Step 5: Assemble the Card

Next, adhere the embossed Crest Solar White panel to a slightly larger Hot Fudge cardstock mat, then attach it to the card base.

For the finished card design, I decided to make a small adjustment to the scarecrow by removing the original small grass patch attached to the stick and replacing it with a wider strip of die-cut grass along the bottom of the card. This creates a fuller autumn scene and helps ground the scarecrow while adding more texture and dimension.

Then, adhere the scarecrow to the card front using foam adhesive for added dimension. Arrange the “Happy Harvest” sentiment individually in a staggered layout on the right side of the scarecrow. This placement keeps the sentiment visible while allowing the layered scarecrow to remain the focal point.

Finally, here’s a closer look at the ink shading, embossed leaf texture, and layered cardstock details that bring this cheerful scarecrow card to life.

Overall, I love how the crisp embossed background allows the colorful scarecrow to take center stage while the Hot Fudge accents add warmth and contrast. I hope this tutorial inspires you to create your own scarecrow card using your favorite CutCardStock colors and a few simple techniques.

First, choose a color scheme for your box. I’ve selected Basis Light Blue, Basis Soft Pink, and Lessebo Sweet Mint. Cut the 8.5″ x 11″ sheets into strips. For my box, I was able to measure 5 strips across by cutting them at a little over 2″ in width, but measure to your box to be certain.

Alternate the strips across the lid of the box and adhere. Use the remaining paper to cover the outer edges according to the measurement of your upcycled box.

Next, cut alphabet letters with die cuts in Lessebo Moss Green. Attach them to the bottom of each strip. I’ve created a birthday box so I’m spelling out the word happy. Alternatively, you can spell a name or the word MERRY for the holidays, CHEER for a care package, etc.

Cut a sentiment to pair with your word as you desire. I’m using Classic Crest Solar White and Lessebo Pitch Black for the word birthday. Adhere this over the large letters with a foam cut out.

Now it’s time to create some rosettes. I’ve used a special die cut for these but you can also fold an extra strip of paper at .25″ like an accordion. Fold back and forth and glue the ends together.

Tuck the middle down and adhere a die cut circle to the inside. Glue with a quick drying adhesive like hot glue to hold it together. Repeat the process with as many paper strips as you need.

From there, add an additional die cut circle to the centers in alternating colors. Additionally, add gems or other flair depending on your recipients style. Then attach to the box where you want – I went with the upper left corner, like a bow.

You are finished! Another option is to decorate the inside of your box like a care package. What a great way to recycle a “good box.” In addition, it’s a fast way to accomplish wrapping for birthdays and holidays.
