Step 1 – Gather Your Supplies

Gather your supplies and choose your papers/cardstock. Today I am using stamps & dies from Mama Elephant, but you can choose any similar dies in your stash. Many companies offer something similar to the ones I am using. The cardstock I am using today:

Classic Crest Solar White
MirriSparkle Glitter Pink Sapphire
DCS Discount Card Stock: Canvas Textured Pink Tutu CardStock

Step 2 – Card Bases and Die Cutting

My card base is 4.25×11″ from the Pink Tutu, scored in half and folded. The XO mat is Classic Crest Solar White, cut 4.25×5.5″ with a Mama Elephant coverplate. Behind that, I layered that gorgeous MirriSparkle Glitter Pink. All of the other images were cut at the same time on my large electronic die cutting machine, also using Classic Crest.

Step 3 – Stamping and Shading the Die Cuts

First, I stamped my images with VersaFine Nocturne ink and embossed with Clear Embossing Powder. I then colored my images with alcohol markers, and added some white gel pen for accents here and there. The sentiment was stamped using VersaFine Nocturne Ink, and the edges of the tag die cut and the deckle circle were sponged with a pink dye ink. I am saving those extra X’s and O’s for another card someday!

Step 4 – Assembling the Card

The middle of the O’s were glued in with liquid adhesive so I could move them around a little before they dried to get the right placement. On some I used the cut outs for placement and on some I just eyeballed it!

Everything is popped up with foam tape or adhered with liquid adhesive. I added three pink gems for added sparkle. This was a fun Father’s Day card to make in pinks! What do you think?

Hi everyone! It’s Jessica here. Wedding season is right around the corner, so I wanted to share a wedding card idea that features a gender-neutral palette. I often struggle with cards that are for male recipients, but this color combination I have in mind today is less-feminine and perfect for the groom. 

Step 1

Trim a piece of DCS Dolphin Gray cardstock to 5 ½’’ x 8 ½’’ and score in the middle at 4 ¼’’ to create the card base. CutCardStock offers many beautiful shades of gray cardstock; I chose DCS Dolphin Gray because it is a nice weight of cardstock that can still be easily embossed. The embossing folder I used here is called Distressed Tile by Stampin’ Up. 

Step 2

Next, stamp the focal image with VersaFine Clair Sand Dune ink on Classic Crest Solar White cardstock. This large and elegant flower is from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set. 

Step 3

After stamping, die cut the images with the coordinating dies. 

Step 4

I decided to ink blend on the leaves to add some color. Since the flower petals are large, they were easy to mask off. Classic Crest Solar White cardstock is ultra smooth and ink blends beautifully with Memento New Sprout and Bamboo Leaves inks. 

Step 5

Then, trim DCS Canvas Textured Lava Stone Gray cardstock to a ¾’’ x 5 ½’’ strip, and heat emboss on the smooth side. The darker shade of gray really makes the sentiment stand out.

Step 6

Finally, add a strip of DCS Indigo Blue for an additional pop of color. A dark green cardstock would actually look great, too. Adhere all of the layers to complete this gender-neutral wedding card.

the focal point

Grabbing a trusty piece of Cougar White cardstock, I diecut it with a coverplate before adhering it to a base of Pop Tone Lemon Drop cardstock, my favorite yellow.

Next, I diecut a Pop Tone Sour Apple cardstock panel with an Avery Elle coverplate. I adhered this to the card front in preparation for the colorful bird.

The Bird

I chose bright colors for the bird to really draw the eye to the focal point. Keeping in mind hummingbirds, I used Stardream Metallic Lagoon cardstock on its head and throat. In addition, other cardstock I used included:

• Lessebo Amazon Dark Teal: wing and eye stripe;
• Discount Raspberry Ice: wing;
• Pop Tone Blue Raspberry: wing & throat; and,
• Pop Tone Orange Fizz: belly.

Even with all of these bright colors, I sponged some of the diecuts to create even more variation in color.

Final touches

When originally designing this card, I pictured the branch I had cut from Royal Sundance Kraft cardstock being beneath the oval aperture. However, this just didn’t feel balanced so I placed the branch on top.

Furthermore, I embossed the sentiment on a scrap of the Royal Sundance Kraft cardstock. Not only does this tie in to the colors, but its placement visually balances the bird.

When I’m designing a card with multiple layers, the paper choice is everything. I selected a combination of Lessebo Colors Navy Blue for its deep, sophisticated tone and DCS Pearl Green Curry for a touch of elegant shimmer. To make sure the card feels substantial and professional in the hand, I always reach for Classic CREST Smooth 130 lb for my card bases—it handles the weight of heavy layers perfectly!

Step-By-Step Instructions

1. Create the Focal Image

I started by using the Freesia Flourish PressPlate on a panel of Heavy Recycled Conservation White 110 lb cover. I used Better Press ink in Sapphire to get a deep, rich blue outline. The 110 lb cover is my go-to for this because it allows the plate to really “bite” into the paper, creating a beautiful debossed texture.

2. Layering the Color

Next, I pulled out the coordinating stencils. I worked through the numbered sequence (1-4) using Catherine Pooler inks. I love how the Sapphire ink outline interacts with the vibrant pinks and purples of the petals. The stenciling process is so meditative and brings the freesias to life instantly.

3. The Secret to Dimension

After stenciling, I used the coordinating dies to cut the image and the sentiment. Here is my favorite tip: Instead of reaching for foam tape immediately, I cut out two extra blank die cuts of both the flower and the sentiment. I used liquid glue to stack them together. This creates a rigid, “weighted” dimension that looks incredibly high-end and won’t flatten in the mail!

4. Die Cutting the Backgrounds

To frame my florals, I used the Rounded and Braided Rectangles dies. I cut the larger, detailed frame from the Lessebo Navy Blue and the smaller inner panel from the DCS Pearl Green Curry. That Green Curry cardstock has a gorgeous linen-like texture and a soft pearl finish that makes the floral colors sing.

5. Final Assembly

I adhered the Navy panel directly to my Classic CREST 130 lb card base with liquid glue. For a little extra “lift,” I did use foam tape for the Green Curry panel. Finally, I glued my stacked freesia and sentiment onto the center and added a few green flat sequins for a bit of sparkle.

Don’t be afraid to mix your finishes! Combining the matte, smooth surface of the Navy cardstock with the shimmery, textured Pearl Green Curry adds a level of visual interest that keeps the eye moving across the design.

I love to make cards with lots of layers and textures! Let me walk you through how I created this one!

Create the Masculine Card Base

I have been playing with Kromekote cardstock for some time now. So many unique ways to use it. Start with an A2 card base using Kromekote Cardstock. Use an embossing folder to texturize the card base with the glossy side against the deboss side so the images pop up. I used the Gear Folder by Tim Holtz. Use Vintage Photo Distress Ink and gently blend the ink across the entire base. You want the white in the cracks to show up. Allow to dry and rub Walnut Stain ink over the top to highlight the gears. Set aside to dry.

Create the Sentiment

I chose You’re the Best by Kristina Werner for my sentiment. Use a sentiment of your choice! The one I am using has both the sentiment plus a shadow die (my favorite). Die cut the sentiment using DCS Twine Cardstock. Cut two and stack for greater depth. Die cut the shadow using DCS Red Pepper Cardstock. Glue the stacked sentiment to the Red Pepper Base.

Create the Embellishment

Select a dial stamp to use for the embellishment. The one I used is from Stampers Anonymous. Use Red Archival Ink to stamp the image on 65 lb. Translucent Vellum. You need to use a permanent ink so the image stays crisp and does not smear. Fussy cut the image. Use a Red alcohol marker to darken the outer ring for impact.

Assemble Your Masculine Card

Start with an A2 card base using the Twine cardstock. Cut a piece of the Red Pepper cardstock to 4.25 x 5.5 inches and attach to the Twine card base. Trim the gear Kromekote piece to 4.0 x 5.25 inches and attach to the base. I use both a glue runner and liquid glue to ensure adherence for the long run. Glue the sentiment you created earlier to the top left section of the card. Double sided tape works well when attaching Vellum. I stick the Vellum image on the tape and trim. Attach the dial image to the lower left section of the base.

Getting Started

This card started with Pop Tone Jelly Bean Green stamped and embossed using a wood-grain embossing folder.  I used a cute chicken die set to cut all my adorable little feathered friends.  Wish I could remember where I got this darling little chicken die set.  It’s been in a small baggie ever since the original packaging ripped.  Does anyone else have the issue of the packaging ripping open from the sharp edges of the dies?  Anyway…I do think I need to look into a bigger and better die storage system for myself.  Any suggestions?

Next, I used a Darice Chicken Wire die and DCS Sand Castle Cardstock for the chicken wire which I placed around my chickens. This helps to nicely fill in any open space without completely covering up my feathered friends.  The addition of wire was to make it look somewhat like my chickens are staying in their coop.  The sentiment again uses the DCS Sand Castle Cardstock layered with a patterned paper.

Aren’t these chickens just TOO much fun?  Small scraps of random patterned papers worked great to cut all my chicken bodies and their heart-shaped wings.  Beautiful Astrobright Solar Yellow 8.5″x11″ for the chicken feet and beaks, and DCS Habanero Red for the chicken tufts and gobblers. Those aren’t official chicken anatomy terms…lol. You’ll always find the perfect colors at CutCardStock.

Helpful Hints & Tips for the Chicken Themed Card

As I sat and looked at my card at this point, it seemed very plain to me and I knew I wasn’t finished yet.  TIP:  You’ll see in the above photo the process I used as I pieced together the chickens.  They looked a little bit “bare” (or plain) so I used a white gel pen and a fine-tip black marker to add detail. Added some lines and dots to the edges of each chicken and their body parts which helped create more definition.  Sometimes these small details can add a lot. Another fun accent I added were these sweet little floral prills (photo below) which I used as “chicken feed”. After all, my feathered friends need to eat, right?!?

Adding Layers

CutCardStock carries these ADORABLE 3×3 Folded Cards in several beautiful colors. Unfortunately, the color I used is sold out but there are other colors available. These 3×3 Folded Cards are great for making gift card holders like mine. Or perhaps a tiny photo album, a journaling spot, cute little invitations, darling gift tags or thank-you cards, etc.  The creative possibilities are simply endless. 

Use a 3×3 Habanero Red Blank Card and more of the cardstock and patterned paper. This carries the design over to the gift card holder. There are a few hearts, papers and accents on the inside and a ribbon enclosure that ties shut my little gift card holder. A tiny glassine bag holds the mini Starbucks gift card. All this pretty cardstock makes my projects sturdy, colorful and fun.

The ribbon is hidden underneath the patterned paper so that it can be tied closed.  The kraft cardstock made a great chicken coop, and it was also used inside my gift card holder.  What a FUN little project to create with these sweet little 3×3 Folded Cards in various colors.  You can use them to create all sorts of darling little things.  Here’s the inside of this little gift card holder.

Finishing Touches to the Chicken Themed Card

Some ribbons, die-cut hearts, a journaling spot, and cardstock helped me to complete this project.  No matter what colors you’re using, CutCardStock definitely has what you need.

I chose a masculine color palette using DSC Indigo Cardstock, DSC Beetle Black Cardstock, and DSC Seafoam Green Cardstock, along with accents of DSC Twine Cardstock, DSC Sand Castle Cardstock, and DSC Green Curry Cardstock. For stamping and structure, I used Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock and Cougar White 110 lbs Cardstock. These papers layer beautifully and hold folds well—perfect for interactive cards.

Step 1 – Create the Card Base

Cut Cougar White 110 lbs Cardstock to 4 1/4″ x 11″. Score at 5 1/2″ and fold to create a standard A2 top-folding card base. This heavier weight cardstock gives your card durability, especially with the interactive element inside.

Step 2 – Build the Twist & Pop Mechanism

Cut Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock to 1 13/16″ x 5 1/4″ and score at 1 5/16″, 2 5/8″, and 3 15/16″.

Next, cut another piece to 1 3/4″ x 4 1/4″. Score at 15/16″ on the short side. Mark at 1 1/2″ and 3″ on both long edges, then connect the marks to form an “X.” Fold and burnish all score lines.

Attach the folded piece inside the card just below the center score line. Once dry, open the card flat and adhere the second piece to create the twist mechanism.

Decorate each panel using DSC Beetle Black Cardstock as a base, then layer DSC Seafoam Green Cardstock and DSC Indigo Cardstock. Add die cut letters spelling “DAD!” using Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock.

Step 3 – Create the Card Front

Cut DSC Indigo Cardstock to 4″ x 5 1/4″ and Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock to 3 3/4″ x 5″. Add strips of DSC Twine Cardstock, DSC Indigo Cardstock, DSC Seafoam Green Cardstock, DSC Green Curry Cardstock, and DSC Beetle Black Cardstock for a bold background.

Die cut your focal elements:

• Hat from DSC Twine Cardstock and DSC Sand Castle Cardstock
• Fishing pole from DSC Sand Castle Cardstock
• Hooks from DSC Beetle Black Cardstock
• Worms from DSC Green Curry Cardstock
• Fish from DSC Seafoam Green Cardstock

Layer everything onto stitched circle die cuts using Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock and DSC Beetle Black Cardstock.

Step 4 – Add Details and Finish

Use ink blending to add depth to each die cut. Focus on edges for a soft shadow effect—this small step makes a big difference. Assemble your focal point and attach it with foam tape for dimension.

Stamp your sentiment on Cougar White 80 lbs Cardstock, then adhere it below the focal panel.

This card was inspired by classic Father’s Day themes—relaxation, fishing, and the outdoors. It’s perfect for crafters who enjoy interactive designs but still want a clean and structured look.

Step 1: Create the Base

Start with a 12 x 12 inch Astrobright Solar Yellow base. Mat the page with a 11 1/4 x 11 1/4 inch piece of DCS Canvas Textured Habanero Red cardstock.

Cut a piece of Cougar White to 11 x 11 inches for the background. Adhering to the base will come later.

Step 2: Build the Background

Cut two 1 x 11 inch strips of Lessebo Pitch Black. Add white stripes with paint pen to mimic lines on a road.

Using the tire track looking stamp, stamp along top, middle and bottom of background.

Add the black strips across the top and bottom of the page to help frame the layout.

Adhere the background to the base.

Step 3: Build the Photo Cluster

Mat your photo with Lessebo Pitch Black. Cut Habanero Red, Solar Yellow and Dolphin Gray panels for layers behind photo.

Angle the layers behind the photo for added movement and dimension. Add a road-shaped clip art loop behind the photo to continue the car theme. The clip art loop is printed on Cougar White cardstock.

Step 4: Create Tire Embellishments

Cut black circles for the tires out of Lessebo Pitch Black. Smaller circles for the wheel centers are cut out of DCS Dolphin Gray. Die cut gear shapes with Bright Foil Silver and add black brads in the center to mimic hubcaps.

Adhere the “tires” around the photo cluster using foam adhesive for dimension. Place a clip art car, that is printed on Adhere the “tires” around the photo cluster using foam adhesive for dimension. Place a clip art car, that is printed on Cougar White and fussy cut, at the bottom of the photo.

Step 5: Add the Title

Die cut letters spelling “all boy” out of DCS Canvas TexturedHabanero Red and Lessebo Pitch Black for the title.

Mat the red letters with black for a shadow effect. This helps the title stand out and ties in beautifully with the color palette.

Adhere the title near the bottom right of the layout.

Step 6: Add Journaling Details

Print small journaling strips with a label maker. Mat with yellow cardstock.

For this layout, I added:

• “no toys just cars”
• Name
• Date

These small labels help personalize the page without overwhelming the design.

Step 7: Finish with Embellishments

Add car embellishments which are printed on Cougar White and fussy cut, along the road borders to carry the theme throughout the page.

Finished Layout

This bright and playful design is full of movement and perfectly suited for documenting those “all boy” moments. I love how the layered cardstock mats, bold title, and tire embellishments create a fun themed page while keeping the photo the focal point.

Step 1: Die Cut the Modern Stripes Pieces

I began by die cutting the Modern Stripes Die from multiple cardstock colors to create the frame and insert pieces. Using the same die for all pieces ensures everything fits together perfectly when assembling the design.

Step 2: Adhere the Modern Stripes Frame to the Base

Next, I adhered the Dolphin Gray Modern Stripes frame to the white base panel. Using the frame created with the Alex Syberia Designs Modern Stripes Die provides a structured outline that keeps the insert pieces aligned and ensures a clean, professional finish.

In my first photo, you’ll notice two Dolphin Gray frames. I originally planned to stack them for added dimension, but after adhering one frame, I decided the single layer provided enough depth for this design.

Step 3: Insert the Modern Stripes Strips

Now comes the fun part — putting it all together like a puzzle!

Once I was happy with the layout, I began adhering the Red Hot and Wild Blueberry strips into the openings of the Dolphin Gray frame created with the Alex Syberia Designs Modern Stripes Die.

Each strip fits snugly into its space, almost like inlay pieces snapping into place. I worked section by section, pressing each strip in carefully to keep the lines crisp and the spacing perfectly aligned. Watching the pattern come together is so satisfying — the bold color contrast really starts to pop at this stage!

Step 4: Create the Dimensional “YAY” Sentiment

To give the card a bold focal point, I die cut the word “YAY” using the Bold Alphabet Dies from Altenew.

I cut the word three times from Red Hot cardstock and once from Dolphin Gray cardstock. The three red layers were stacked and adhered together to create sturdy, chipboard-like dimension.

For a subtle shadow effect, I slightly offset the Dolphin Gray layer behind the stacked red letters. This small detail adds depth and helps the sentiment stand out beautifully against the striped background.

Step 5: Add the Sub-Sentiment

To finish the focal area, I stamped a coordinating sub-sentiment in red ink onto Dolphin Gray cardstock and cut it out using a sentiment strip die.

I positioned the strip directly beneath the centered “YAY,” keeping the width aligned with the main word for a clean, balanced look. Aligning the edges of the strip with the sentiment above helps maintain that crisp, graphic feel and keeps the overall design polished and cohesive.

Step 6: Add Embellishments and Finish

To enhance the celebratory feel without overpowering the bold striped pattern, I added five metallic red stars — two near the top left of the sentiment and three toward the bottom right.

Placing the embellishments in a diagonal arrangement creates natural visual flow across the card and beautifully frames the focal point. This simple detail adds sparkle and movement while still keeping the design clean and modern.

Final Thoughts

This design demonstrates how bold patterns and layered cardstock can create a striking masculine birthday card without relying on heavy embellishments. Repeating key colors, keeping the layout structured, and using dimensional die-cut letters ensures a cohesive, energetic, and modern look.

Sometimes a strong graphic background paired with a bold sentiment is all you need to make a statement. The clean lines of the striped design combined with the stacked “YAY” create impact while still feeling balanced and refined.

Choosing Colors for File Folders

First, start with a few file folders from your favorite store. I chose some neutral tones, then looked for a coordinating patterned paper. These florals were perfect!

Next, start matching your patterned paper to a color palette you love. I’m using DCS Natural Twine, Basis Burgundy, Lessebo Moss Green and Basis Soft Pink.

Then find a set of banner and tag dies you love in your stash. These stitched ones add texture to my already textured folders. Cut assorted sizes in a variety of colors and in your patterned paper too.

Now, take a tag shaped cut like this one and fold the top over like a tab. Glue to the back of the inside folder edge.

Begin your layouts with your patterned paper so you know where to start layering. Additionally I cut a circle for the bottom corners too. Cut any overlap off for some offset variations.

Take smaller tags now and layer over the bigger ones. It’s a good idea to lay these out before you glue. In addition, add cardstock pieces to the back of any areas are uneven.

Decorating Your Project

To start embellishing, cut small leaves with Lessebo Moss Green and bows with Basis Soft Pink. Place these wherever you feel an open space exists. Additionally I filled in with some glitter glue for sparkle.

Finally, print some funny sentiments on Classic Crest Solar White with your printer, trim down and add to your decorative corners. I guarantee it will make you smile the next time you reach for it!

Here’s an alternate one cut with the same pattern, but opposite placement.

Cardstock:

• Imagine Crafts Sheer Shimmer Craft Spray (Gold)
• Sentiment Stamp
• Various Dies (Dotted Rectangle, Sentiment Strip)
• Bearly Art Glue & Foam Strips
• Tiny Gold Rhinestones

Create the Card Base

Firstly, trim the Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock to create an A2 card base (4.25″ x 5.5″). Set aside.

Die Cut the Background Panel

Secondly, use a dotted rectangle die to cut a panel from DSC Light Yellow Cardstock. This adds subtle detail and frames your design beautifully.

Die Cut the Focal Image For Easy DIY Encouragement Card

Thirdly, die cut the Swirling Sparrow base from the DSC Aqua Cardstock. Also die cut the outer decorative pieces from DSC Patriot Blue. Adhere the pieces of the sparrow using Bearly Art Glue.

Assemble the Card Front

Afterwards, glue the yellow panel onto your card base. Now, attach the bird on top using foam strips for dimension.

Add Shimmer & Texture To Easy DIY Encouragement Card

Lightly splatter the yellow panel with Imagine Crafts Sheer Shimmer Craft Spray (Gold). Let it air dry or heat set for faster results. Doing this gives that soft, gold splatter shine seen in the card.

Adhere the Sentiment

Fourthly, stamp your sentiment on the Solar White cardstock. Die cut or trim this into a strip using your sentiment strip die. Pop it up with foam strips across the center of the card.

Finishing Touches To Easy DIY Encouragement Card

Lastly, add some tiny gold rhinestones around the design for sparkle and balance.

Cut Card Base & Layers

First time using a Lynx A2 Folded Card Base, and ladies and gentlemen, I have to tell you they’re awesome! The 120# weight makes the best card base.

Next, cut a background panel and embellishing strip from patterned paper using a stitched rectangle die. Similarly, die cut two sunbursts, one from Stardream Metallic Jupiter and one from Stardream Metallic Eris.

Additionally, cut inside layering panels from Stardream Metallic Jupiter and Neenah Classic Crest 80# Solar White.

Adhere Layers

For the front panel, adhere the sunbursts together in an offset fashion so the red shows slightly under the white. Use thin foam squares to adhere the sunburst piece to the background panel.

Also adhere the inside white sentiment panel to the red layer. Add the patterned paper embellishing strip. Typically I put the embellishing strip at the top but chose to adhere it to the bottom for this card.

Assemble Hot Rod

Now comes the fun part of assembling the hot rod after we cut the following pieces:
1. Stardream Metallic Jupiter for the body.
2. Stardream Metallic Eris for the top and headliner. Take a light gray marker and color the headliner so it’s slightly darker than the top.
3. Neenah Classic Crest 80# Solar White for the lights and tire centers.
4. Pop Tone Black Licorice for the steering wheel, under-carriage and wheels.
5. Bright Silver Foil for the grill, bumper and other trim.

Create Focal Element

Die cut a stitched oval from Glama Natural Clear Translucent Vellum and stamp a sentiment at the bottom. Personally, I prefer to heat emboss on vellum but solvent-based or archival-quality pigment ink can be used. Afterwards, adhere the hot rod and a few tiny punched hearts.

Add Inside Sentiment

Stamp a sentiment in black ink on the inside panel.

Complete Hot Rod Card for Dad’s Day

All that’s left to do is adhere the front and inside panels to the card base, and add a few clear gemstones.
