For the 2 of you who haven't seen the famous Otters Holding Hands Video (click here to watch it) the CBC did a piece on them a while ago that I missed. I just looked and the otters holding hands video is almost up to 13 million views!

The California Otters Population Drops Drastically

I've been reading a lot of articles that are talking about how the California sea otter population has dropped in the last year, in fact it's dropping faster than any time since the late 90's according to the US Geological Survey. Sea otters aren't just adorable, they're a keystone species that is important for maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Due to the poor economy, fewer California residents donated money to the Sea Otter on their tax forms so this is a crucial time to support the otter.

What can you do to help? If you're a California resident, when you file taxes next year you can choose to donate money to help the sea otter. For everyone else, visit the following websites for more information.

Jack The River Otter Is The New Mascot For The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children

Is there a better mascot than the otter? Nope.

From the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children: River Otter Jack was elected from a list of five species finalists represented at the zoo: a mountain lion, a grizzly bear, a red panda, a penguin and a Rocky Mountain river otter. Members of the Denver metro community voted during a month-long online contest for their favorite animal to be RMHC's mascot.

Odessa The Otter and Meg

It's a good thing that there are people like Athena Irland because not every state has places that can take care of abandoned wildlife. After Thetus and Joe Tatum found little Odessa, they found that the nearest aquarium wouldn't take her and that's when Irland, a retired game warden stepped in.

From The Post and Courier: Left an orphan and about a week old, the pup had little chance of survival. But as fate would have it, the palm-size otter ended up in the right hands.
Odessa, a North American river otter, is now a healthy 4-month-old thanks to the help of a generous group of people.
She was found on the side of Viper Road near Lake Moultrie in Pineville around the beginning of March.
Thetus and Joe Tatum, who live in the area, first spotted the otter as a simple moving mass along the road. Passing the otter again later, they stopped and realized that its mother probably wasn't returning for it, so they rescued it.

Six weeks old baby otters

One thing I love is opening my e-mail and finding new baby otter pictures! Matt, who is the head keeper at the British Wildlife Centre sent me these great pics of their baby otters. Stirling and Thisle are the proud parents of these 3 otters. If you live in the UK, why not stop in and visit their otters and maybe even help out the Centre by "adopting" an otter.

The NY State Zoo at Thompson Park Gets Two Otters!

Lucky New Yorkers have two new otters to go see at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park!

From the Watertown Daily Times: The first of the river otters have arrived at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park, awaiting the completion of their brand-new exhibit space.
The pair arrived Saturday evening from a North Carolina wildlife rehabilitation facility, and were lapping up attention from a parade of visiting zoo staff and friends in their off-exhibit holding areas Sunday afternoon.

If you're a NY resident and would like to help out the Zoo, they're looking for people to join their Otter 400 club. With a minimum $50 donation, you can help them build a new North American River Otter exhibit.

Video: Sea World Sea Otter Grooming

I'm not sure why an otter grooming is so adorable but I can watch them groom forever. This cute little girl otter spent about 15 minutes straight just grooming and squishing her face. If you haven't been to Sea World yet, I highly recommend the trip. It was so much better than I ever expected and besides the awesome sea otters, there's an otter in a show who does a few tricks and you can get up close to dolphins! I can't wait to go again.

From the Monterey Aquarium: Dua, one of four Asian small-clawed otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has learned to play the piano as a behind-the-scenes “enrichment.” Our husbandry staff created this activity to give Dua something interesting to do, extend his feeding time and make use of his incredible dexterity—a trait he shares with others of his species.

Lucky UK residents have three new adorable baby otters to visit at the Dudley Zoo!

From the Dudley Zoo: Three baby Asiatic short-clawed otters are making a splash at DZG as part of a major conservation programme for this rare species.
Proud parents, Lucy and Bruce, are currently showing off their new brood to visitors in Monkey Tails.
The litter of two males, named Jack and Jet, and one female, called Sky, is already proving popular with staff and visitors alike.

Otter Babies at the Sedgwick County Zoo

Selah the otter has been bringing her new babies out to teach them how to swim and fend for themselves at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas. If you go to the Wichita Eagle website you can watch video of the otters!

From The Wichita Eagle: Since Sunday, the river otter at the Sedgwick County Zoo has been teaching her four babies, born March 26, to turn and twirl and use their tails as rudders when they swim.
She has even grabbed a reluctant baby otter and pulled it by the scruff of its neck to teach it to dive underwater, said senior keeper, Brian Helten.
