Then

My one and only baby. I called you baby fish lips because you loved to pucker your lips. On the day
you turned one you started talking with a full sentence and continued non-stop! You were fiercely
independent with no attachment issues; waving good-bye and enjoying new adventures were more
important than shedding tears because mommy left the room. You played so much with mommy that
you wore me out!

Now

You are a middle schooler and watching you grow into a fine young man brings me joy. Your
independence continues to grow. You are a seasoned solo traveler and although cautious, you never
meet a stranger. Your days of playing games with mom are numbered and relationships with friends
grow stronger every day. I cherish every hug and kiss because I know they will soon no longer be
reserved for me. I’m bursting with pride each time you tackle new challenges
(like violin lessons and re-learning cursive) and succeed!

I was once told we have 18 summers with our children and the time is moving swiftly. This video
captures my feelings…

Kids Summer Activity in Atlanta - The Alliance Theater show The Dancing Granny

My son and I have seen numerous shows at the Alliance Theater and we have never been disappointed. The Alliance is currently undergoing a renovation and has taken the show on the road. The first show of the 2017-18 Alliance on the road season is The Dancing Granny, based on the book by Newbury Honor winner, Ashley Bryan. We are excited about seeing this show because we’ve already visited the exhibit of Mr. Bryan’s work that is at the High Museum through January 2018. The Dancing Granny is a family friendly one act play that opened on June 11th at Olgethrope University. The Dancing Granny is the story of how Anase the spider, a character well known in African folklore, tries to trick Granny into dancing away from her grandson so that he can steal her vegetables. His plan is thwarted when he gets caught up in dancing himself!

This show will be especially fun for us because my mother is going to see it with us, so my son may very well have his own dancing granny before it is all said and done! The show is running until July 16th. Tickets are currently available for the showing at The Galloway School until July 2nd and then moves to my alma mater Spelman College July 8th through July 16th. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $8 for children 6-17 and free for children 5 and under. You can purchase your tickets for the show here.

Don't miss Finding Neverland at the Fabulous Fox Theater! #BroadwayinAtlanta

My son and I had the distinct pleasure of going to see the Broadway in Atlanta production of Finding Neverland on opening night at the Fabulous Fox Theater. We have seen numerous shows there but after seeing this one, my son said “Thank you for bringing me, this one is my favorite!” I have to say I was blown away because he nor I had any expectations going in. I didn’t tell him we were going to the show until we arrived at the theater and I had was not familiar with the show. I actually thought it was a take on the classic, Peter Pan...and in a way it was, it is the story of the author J.M. Barrie and how he finds inspiration to write the play after a chance meeting with the Llewelyn family in Kensington Park. The family is composed of Sylvia and her 4 fun loving boys.

The music was phenomenal. On more than one occasion I found myself tapping my foot and wanted to dance along with the cast of characters. The show delved into the world of imagination and the visual effects were spectacular. This is a show the entire family can truly enjoy, my son will be ten on Sunday and this was a birthday treat (we attended the 7:30 show on a school night). He was attentive for the entire musical. It was filled with dialogue that could be appreciated by the young and innuendo for the adults in the audience.

We were entertained by the real life characters and there were appearances by Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Tinkerbell. My absolute favorite scene was when Captain Hook entered the psyche of J.M. Barrie. Overall, this is a can’t miss show. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I realized this was a show about “the making of Peter Pan” because it was a totally new story for me. Finding Neverland is playing at the Fabulous Fox theater from now until May 21st. Be sure to get your tickets and treat your family to what is sure to be one of your favorite Broadway in Atlanta musicals! Tickets are available on the Fabulous Fox Theater website.
