Before you choose a product, make sure that it is safe for use on hard wood floors like the Nature’s Miracle Hard Floor Cleaner. When I worked in the training department at PetSmart, Nature’s Miracle was our go-to brand recommendation. Keep in mind, Nature’s Miracle makes dozens of varieties of formulas. Make sure you look for the one that is specially made for the protection of hard floors. The great thing about this product is can be used on sealed wood, linoleum, vinyl, concrete and ceramic tile. Not only does this product help with odors, but it can also help remove stains created from pet accidents. Spray the affected area and let sit for five minutes. Wipe away with a cloth or paper towels. No need to rinse. 75% of reviewers gave this product a 5 star review, which is pretty good. One of the issues people have with the product is that it has kind of an odd scent that some find to be irritating. While it is safe for pets, it is still a chemical. As with all chemicals, some people have a lower tolerance for certain chemicals. I would allow proper ventilation for an hour or two. Personally, I wouldn’t say it has a terrible odor. I mean, what could be worse than urine smell, am I right?

Washing a dog at home is the best way to keep your dog looking great in between grooming appointments. A good dog bath can make dog not only look better, but feel better, too. Washing a dog that is white, or light in color often presents a challenge to some pet parents. White dog breeds such as bichon, poodle, westie, and maltese are quick to show dirt, residue, and other stains, and if not cleaned immediately, can permanently stain your dog’s coat. We have seen it all at Cuts for Mutts Dog Grooming Phoenix,  white dogs that have turned a dingy yellow color. Others that have even gotten into paint, oil, or gotten dirty from playing in the garden. Whether you have a smelly dog, or just a dirty dog, no matter what your reason for needing a dog bath, brightening and whitening should be your number one concern.

If you are going to be washing a dog at home, make sure you are using a shampoo that is formulated for your dog’s hair/skin type. Whitening shampoo is a great choice for dogs with white or lightly-colored coats. Just be careful about which products you choose. Some of the whitening shampoos found at big retailers are too harsh for sensitive skin. Whitening shampoos serve a variety of purposes, from brightening a dingy coat, to even bleaching a stained coat. If your dog’s coat is stained, you should consult a professional groomer to use a blueing shampoo. Too much of a good thing can turn your dog a purple/blue color, so use whitening shampoo in small amounts.

Quick Tips For Washing a Dog at Home

Supplies Needed:

• Whitening Shampoo (I like the Angels’ Eyes Whitening Shampoo)
• Slicker Brush
• Metal Comb
• Hose Attachment for your tub

Before you begin to wash your dog, use a slicker brush to untangle any knots or matting. Set your dog in the tub, and saturate your dog with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount of whitening shampoo to your dog’s coat, concentrating on problem areas such as feet, beard, and ear tips. Allow the whitening shampoo to rest on your dog’s coat for 3 minutes, or follow the instructions on the bottle. Use a fine tooth metal comb under the eyes to clear away tear stains. Rinse well, and fluff dry.

Deshed blade: A notoriously underrated deshedding tool is the double-sided shedding blade. This tool quickly and easily rakes away the loose hair to keep your dog’s coat sleek and smooth. Here is a short video of the tool in action.

Deshedding shampoo: My favorite deshed shampoo is the TropiClean Shed Control Shampoo. It has a pleasant, non-overpowering fragrance of lime and coconut with nice exfoliating action to help loosen shedding hair.

Deshed brush: Every good groom starts with a quality brush. The Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush is great for longer hair breeds because it removes loose hair, demats, and eliminates tangles and dander. Dogs love the gentle massage-feeling they get from this brush. Keep in mind this brush is designed for longer hair breeds. If you have a short hair dog, I recommend the furminator, which we’ll get to in just a moment.

Metal comb: No grooming kit in complete without a good old-fashioned metal comb. The Andis Pet Steel Comb removes tangles, loose hair, and dirt. One thing to keep in mind is this deshedding tool should not be used for dematting. Doing so can lead to the ripping of skin and other painful injuries to your dog.

Furminator: Last but certainly not least is the world-famous Furminator specially designed to remove up to 95% of dog’s loose hair. This brush was designed by pet care experts who know all the pain points of finding a quality deshed tool. The brush features non-irritating materials which is very important for brushing out excessively hair breeds such as a Siberian Husky.

A notoriously underrated deshedding tool is the double-sided shedding blade. This tool quickly and easily whisks away the loose hair to keep your dog’s coat sleek and smooth. This tool is best used on larger dogs such as Great Danes, but can be very useful for exceptionally hairy dogs like the Shiba Inu I have shown here. Choosing the Best Dog Grooming Clippers

When I first started my job as a new groomer, I was required to buy my own pet grooming clippers. Internet search results show mountains of options. It can be a little overwhelming. Clippers are a big investment. You want to find a pair that last longer than that first Great Pyrenees shave-down. I prefer Andis clippers for my professional work. They have a lot of features that make my grooming job a lot easier.

Quiet Motor: I really like the Andis 22340 for its quiet running motor. This is an important feature if you are grooming a fearful or nervous dog.

Adjustable Speeds: This model has two speeds so you can easily adjust the noise and blade speed if you have an exceptional wild child on the table.

Detachable Blades: Some amateur dog groomers make the mistake of buying cheap clippers that do not have detachable blades. If you’re serious at all about getting an accurate cut, you’re going to have to shell out the big bucks. Detachable blades do not comb cheap. Luckily, this model does come with one #10 blade. This blade is designed for extremely close shaves of the belly and potty trail. This blade is typically not recommended for body shaves because it cuts close to the skin. You will want to purchase a few more blades to work with a variety of hair types. I’ll let you in on a little secret. You don’t have to have a huge blade collection. For my first year as a groomer, I got by using only a handful of blades. The #10, the 5F, and 7F.

The one thing I don’t like about this particular model is that they get hot fairly quickly. You may find yourself stopping to use blade coolant more frequently than with other grooming clipper models.

Another one of the best dog grooming clippers is the Oster Dual Speed. Oster has been manufacturing quality hair-cutting clippers since 1928.

Internal Cooling Fan: Unlike the Andis, this dual speed Oster model is designed to go the distance. The internal cooling fan keeps the clipper cool while you hold it.

Heavy Duty: This heavy duty model is rugged enough to endure heavy coats and large animals. This motor can operate at 4000 SPM. So, if you have a big, curly haired dog, this is the clipper I would go with.

Includes CryogenX Blades: This model includes CryogenX blades #10 and #7F. These blades are built to stay cooler longer.

When to Shave Down a Bichon

• Squeeze your dog’s coat through your fingers. If you feel any clumps of hair that feel balled up like cotton, these are matts. Check to see how close to the skin the matt starts. The clippers will have to go UNDER the start of the matt. This might leave a matted dog with very little hair.
• Run your fingers through your dog’s hair. If your fingers get stuck in tangles or the hair is too thick, your dog might require a shave down.
• If you have a child or other family member with allergies, your doctor might recommend getting your pets shaved down to eliminate excess hair in your home.
• If your dog wears lots of clothing or sweaters, she might be prone to matting and tangling.
• If you have an elderly or disabled dog, a shave-down might be a good choice for you.
• Recent rescued dogs with neglectful pasts sometimes benefit from shavedowns to their coats off fresh.
• Dogs with fleas and ticks benefit from shavedowns by giving pests less to grab a hold of.

Reasons NOT to shave down a dog

• Shaving down your dog to keep him “cool” is not always the right choice. Your dog’s coat is designed to fan his skin, and provide a protective sleeve from sun exposure. By removing his sun protection, you might expose your dog to harmful rays and sunburn. 
• Neglectful care. Your dog needs to be groomed more than once every six months. Your busy schedule or lack of money is not an excuse to allow your dog to be neglected. We offer affordable rates to fit anyone’s budget. Please let us know how we can help your dog get the care he needs.
• Do not shave down your dog if he has a history of allergic reactions to clippers.
• Puppies should not be shaved down, and should be introduced to clippers slowly.
• Aggressive dogs should not be shaved down.
• Fearful dogs should be introduced to clippers slowly, so shave downs are not recommended. A light trim every couple of weeks until your dog is comfortable with me.
