At Cuts 4 Mutts, we pride ourselves on being the ultimate authority on all things puppy grooming. Our dedicated team of expert groomers knows just how crucial those early grooming experiences are for your precious fur-babies. So, hold onto your leashes as we unleash the secrets to a positively perfect grooming session for your adorable little companions!

Step One: Taking Baby Steps, The Progressive Way!

We believe in making grooming a delightful adventure for your puppies, and that starts with a progressive grooming approach. Our experienced groomers are masters at introducing your furry pals to the magical world of grooming, one baby step at a time. No need to rush the paw-ty! From gentle brush introductions to getting paw-dicures, we let your pups set the pace!

Step Two: Short and Sweet Grooming Sessions

Who said grooming sessions had to be a marathon? At Cuts 4 Mutts, we know how to make every minute count without overwhelming your little buddies. Short, fun-filled grooming sessions are the key to keeping tails wagging and paws tapping with excitement! We ensure that every moment is filled with love and tender care, leaving your pups yearning for more!

Step Three: Good Vibes and Treat Vibes!

Oh, we love to see those puppy eyes light up with happiness! That’s why we are all about spreading the tail-wagging joy through positive reinforcement during grooming. From scrumptious treats to belly rubs that hit the “paw-sitive” spot, we shower your pups with love and rewards for their good behavior. It’s all about creating a lasting bond built on trust and fun!

Barking Up the Right Tree: Benefits of Grooming for Pup’s Comfort

Not only does grooming make your puppies look like paw-dorable models, but it also plays a vital role in their comfort and well-being! Regular grooming ensures no tangles, no mats, and definitely no “bad hair” days! Plus, skilled groomers know how to keep those puppy-skin issues at bay, making sure your pups feel like the kings and queens of the dog park! Crown that cuteness with confidence!

So there you have it, a good groomer will make sure your puppies’ first grooming experience is a joyful tail-wagging ride. From our progressive steps to our short sessions filled with rewards, it’s all about creating a paw-sitive atmosphere where comfort and style go paw-in-paw!

Are you tired of your pets urinating and smelling up your beautiful hard wood floors? Make sure to choose a pet urine eliminator that is specially designed for hard wood floors and won’t stain or dry out the wood. These special pet urine elimnators can be used to absolve the enzymes that cause your pet’s urine to have that awful smell in the first place.

Before you choose a product, make sure that it is safe for use on hard wood floors like the Nature’s Miracle Hard Floor Cleaner. When I worked in the training department at PetSmart, Nature’s Miracle was our go-to brand recommendation. Keep in mind, Nature’s Miracle makes dozens of varieties of formulas. Make sure you look for the one that is specially made for the protection of hard floors. The great thing about this product is can be used on sealed wood, linoleum, vinyl, concrete and ceramic tile. Not only does this product help with odors, but it can also help remove stains created from pet accidents. Spray the affected area and let sit for five minutes. Wipe away with a cloth or paper towels. No need to rinse. 75% of reviewers gave this product a 5 star review, which is pretty good. One of the issues people have with the product is that it has kind of an odd scent that some find to be irritating. While it is safe for pets, it is still a chemical. As with all chemicals, some people have a lower tolerance for certain chemicals. I would allow proper ventilation for an hour or two. Personally, I wouldn’t say it has a terrible odor. I mean, what could be worse than urine smell, am I right?

If you want a product that not only is a pet urine eliminator, but also has a cleansing fragrance, I recommend checking out the Angry Orange Dog & Cat Urine Destroyer for Floors & Carpet. Made with the citrusy oils cold-pressed from orange peels, this odor eliminator seems like hands down the way to go, if you’re a person who loves the smell of oranges. Let’s just think about this for a second. Would you rather smell the glorious smell of fresh, ripe oranges, or the revolting stench of your cat’s morning pee? One thing to note: That orange oil contains a plant terpene limonene which a tough anti-bacterial agent. This product claims to kill bacteria for up to 80 hours after application. So, for soiled area this is useful. Some users of this spray claim the spray only masks the odor rather than eliminates it. To avoid this from happening, you want to leave the spray on the odor stain for the recommended period of time of five minutes. 72% of Amazon customers gave this product a 5 star review, coming in just a few points shy of the good ole’ tried and loved Nature’s Miracle.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you have tried one of these products. Check out my blog for more of my personal tips and recommendations.

Washing a dog at home is the best way to keep your dog looking great in between grooming appointments. A good dog bath can make dog not only look better, but feel better, too. Washing a dog that is white, or light in color often presents a challenge to some pet parents. White dog breeds such as bichon, poodle, westie, and maltese are quick to show dirt, residue, and other stains, and if not cleaned immediately, can permanently stain your dog’s coat. We have seen it all at Cuts for Mutts Dog Grooming Phoenix, white dogs that have turned a dingy yellow color. Others that have even gotten into paint, oil, or gotten dirty from playing in the garden. Whether you have a smelly dog, or just a dirty dog, no matter what your reason for needing a dog bath, brightening and whitening should be your number one concern.

If you are going to be washing a dog at home, make sure you are using a shampoo that is formulated for your dog’s hair/skin type. Whitening shampoo is a great choice for dogs with white or lightly-colored coats. Just be careful about which products you choose. Some of the whitening shampoos found at big retailers are too harsh for sensitive skin. Whitening shampoos serve a variety of purposes, from brightening a dingy coat, to even bleaching a stained coat. If your dog’s coat is stained, you should consult a professional groomer to use a blueing shampoo. Too much of a good thing can turn your dog a purple/blue color, so use whitening shampoo in small amounts.

Whitening Treatment Includes:

Application of blueing mixture on stained spots

Quick Tips For Washing a Dog at Home

Before you get started on your dog bath, gather all of your supplies first. Make sure you have access to everything you need before you get started. You never want to leave your pet unattended in the tub.

Supplies Needed:

Whitening Shampoo (I like the Angels’ Eyes Whitening Shampoo)

Slicker Brush

Metal Comb

Hose Attachment for your tub

Before you begin to wash your dog, use a slicker brush to untangle any knots or matting. Set your dog in the tub, and saturate your dog with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount of whitening shampoo to your dog’s coat, concentrating on problem areas such as feet, beard, and ear tips. Allow the whitening shampoo to rest on your dog’s coat for 3 minutes, or follow the instructions on the bottle. Use a fine tooth metal comb under the eyes to clear away tear stains. Rinse well, and fluff dry.

Deshed blade: A notoriously underrated deshedding tool is the double-sided shedding blade. This tool quickly and easily rakes away the loose hair to keep your dog’s coat sleek and smooth. Here is a short video of the tool in action.

Deshedding shampoo: My favorite deshed shampoo is the TropiClean Shed Control Shampoo. It has a pleasant, non-overpowering fragrance of lime and coconut with nice exfoliating action to help loosen shedding hair.

Deshed brush: Every good groom starts with a quality brush. The Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush is great for longer hair breeds because it removes loose hair, demats, and eliminates tangles and dander. Dogs love the gentle massage-feeling they get from this brush. Keep in mind this brush is designed for longer hair breeds. If you have a short hair dog, I recommend the furminator, which we’ll get to in just a moment.

Metal comb: No grooming kit in complete without a good old-fashioned metal comb. The Andis Pet Steel Comb removes tangles, loose hair, and dirt. One thing to keep in mind is this deshedding tool should not be used for dematting. Doing so can lead to the ripping of skin and other painful injuries to your dog.

Furminator: Last but certainly not least is the world-famous Furminator specially designed to remove up to 95% of dog’s loose hair. This brush was designed by pet care experts who know all the pain points of finding a quality deshed tool. The brush features non-irritating materials which is very important for brushing out excessively hair breeds such as a Siberian Husky.

Several breeds grow thick hair coats during the winter and lose it all in the Spring. If your dog’s hair is flying around the house, it might be time to invest in a quality deshedding tool. So, what tools are perfect for deshedding Shiba Inu hair?

A notoriously underrated deshedding tool is the double-sided shedding blade. This tool quickly and easily whisks away the loose hair to keep your dog’s coat sleek and smooth. This tool is best used on larger dogs such as Great Danes, but can be very useful for exceptionally hairy dogs like the Shiba Inu I have shown here. This little lady used to come to me twice a year for the deshed treatment.

The Shiba Inu has a thick double coat that gives her that characteristic teddy bear look. She sheds moderately throughout the year and heavily twice a year at seasonal changes. If you plan on deshedding a Shiba Inu yourself, a mesh-shielded hat is not a bad idea!

Choosing the Best Dog Grooming Clippers

When I first started my job as a new groomer, I was required to buy my own pet grooming clippers. Internet search results show mountains of options. It can be a little overwhelming. Clippers are a big investment. You want to find a pair that last longer than that first Great Pyrenees shave-down. I prefer Andis clippers for my professional work. They have a lot of features that make my grooming job a lot easier.

Quiet Motor: I really like the Andis 22340 for its quiet running motor. This is an important feature if you are grooming a fearful or nervous dog.

Adjustable Speeds: This model has two speeds so you can easily adjust the noise and blade speed if you have an exceptional wild child on the table.

Detachable Blades: Some amateur dog groomers make the mistake of buying cheap clippers that do not have detachable blades. If you’re serious at all about getting an accurate cut, you’re going to have to shell out the big bucks. Detachable blades do not comb cheap. Luckily, this model does come with one #10 blade. This blade is designed for extremely close shaves of the belly and potty trail. This blade is typically not recommended for body shaves because it cuts close to the skin. You will want to purchase a few more blades to work with a variety of hair types. I’ll let you in on a little secret. You don’t have to have a huge blade collection. For my first year as a groomer, I got by using only a handful of blades. The #10, the 5F, and 7F.

The one thing I don’t like about this particular model is that they get hot fairly quickly. You may find yourself stopping to use blade coolant more frequently than with other grooming clipper models.

Another one of the best dog grooming clippers is the Oster Dual Speed. Oster has been manufacturing quality hair-cutting clippers since 1928.

Internal Cooling Fan: Unlike the Andis, this dual speed Oster model is designed to go the distance. The internal cooling fan keeps the clipper cool while you hold it.

Heavy Duty: This heavy duty model is rugged enough to endure heavy coats and large animals. This motor can operate at 4000 SPM. So, if you have a big, curly haired dog, this is the clipper I would go with.

Includes CryogenX Blades: This model includes CryogenX blades #10 and #7F. These blades are built to stay cooler longer.

It seems like my dogs eat grass just to defy me sometimes. Every time I let my dogs outside, one of them inevitably starts mowing the lawn, so to speak. After some research, I learned this is actually a normal behavior for dogs and there can be several reasons why your dog likes to chew on grass blades.

Reasons Why Dogs Like To Eat Grass

Nutrient Deficiency: The reason some dogs eat grass is that they may lack certain vitamins and minerals. If you suspect this is the case with your dog, a chewable vitamin supplement might help.

Anxiety: Dogs can experience anxiety over anything from thunderstorms to household changes. This kind of behavior can lead to excessive grass consumption as the act tends to provide a coping mechanism for dogs. A pet CBD oil may help reduce your dog’s environmental nervousness.

An eating disorder: Some veterinarians label this behavior as a disorder called pica, the act of consuming strange objects.

Instinct: Dogs naturally crave the act of eating grass as part of their genetic makeup, dating back to when they hunted their food.

Upset Stomach: Occasionally, your dog may eat grass to help with digestive issues. As long as the grass in your yard is safe, there should be no problem with an occasional nibble of grass.

Enjoyment: Of course, some dogs simply enjoy the texture and taste of grass.

Steps To Keep Grass-Lovin’ Pets Healthy

Keep a dog-friendly backyard. Do not use pesticides that contain harmful ingredients. Think about making a special pet-friendly space in your backyard for your dog. Sometimes, dogs just get bored with their surroundings. If you have a backyard, your pet might enjoy his own dedicated space to explore.

Pet grass is a good choice for dogs, in moderation of course. This ready-to-grow packs of all-natural greens are loaded with nutrients like chlorophyll, carotene, antioxidant vitamins and minerals. Let’s face it. Dogs eat grass. We might as well provide a safe form of grass for them to munch.

Clean up dog’s waste: Reduce the risk of parasite transmission by disposing of dog poop regularly with a pet rake to reduce back pain. This will at least keep your grass clean and reduce the chances of parasites which can make your dog sick.

1. The Brush-o-Rama: Picking the Purr-fect Brush! Just like we humans have different hairstyles, our furry buddies come in all sorts of coats! From curly fluff balls to sleek, shiny wonders, make sure to pick the right brush for your pup’s unique fur. Let’s find the paw-fect match!

2. Brush-tastic Beginnings: Start Early and Easy! Picture this: a cute little pup, a soft brush, and loads of treats! Introduce the brush to your furry pal as early as possible, and remember, it’s all about baby steps. Begin with short, playful brushing sessions to get them used to the magic of grooming!

3. Zen Zone: Keep It Calm and Cool! Find a zen zone for brushing time – somewhere quiet and cozy where your pup can be their true chill-self. Less distractions, more relaxation! Time to brush away the stress and leave them feeling like a pup star!

4. Brushing Bonanza: Shower ‘Em with Love! Sprinkle the magic of positive reinforcement during brushing! Treats, belly rubs, and happy dances are the way to go! Let’s turn grooming into a celebration of hugs and happiness!

5. Knot-a-Bad-Idea: Mind Those Tangles! Uh-oh, tangles can be a real “ruff” problem! But fret not, a little detangling spray and gentle finger work will do the trick! Say goodbye to those pesky knots and hello to smooth, snuggle-ready fur!

6. Brush-tastic Direction: Go with the Flow! Flow with the fur, my friends! Brush in the direction of hair growth, and your pup will thank you with extra tail wags! Remember, brushing is all about love, not tug-of-war!

7. Patience is Pup-tastic: Take It Slow! No need to rush – take it one wag at a time! If your furry friend seems unsure, no worries! Patience, love, and treats will win the day!

8. Tender Loving Care: Sensitive Spots Alert! Ears, tail, and those cute little paws need extra gentle care! Show ’em some TLC and watch your pup’s eyes sparkle with delight! Sparkles and snuggles, here we come!

9. Purr-fectly Regular: Brushing is Trendy! Make brushing a regular thing! Your pup will love the attention, and you’ll keep that fabulous fur in tip-top shape. Ready for the paw-pawrazzi to follow you both around!

10. High Five to Health: Check for Skin Love! While brushing, show some skin love! Check for any signs of skin issues and keep an eye on your pup’s well-being.
Pets can run away for many reasons including fear, opened doors and gates, jumping or digging through fences, breaking the leash or collars slipping off, burglaries, car accidents and more. According to a recent study by the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million animals enter shelters every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. Each of your pets should have identification, even if they are indoors all the time. Many people tell me they don’t think their indoor cats need identification, but there are many reasons your cat could find himself outdoors. Even leashed dogs need to wear ID tags in case of an accidental escape. According to the National Council on Pet Population, less than 15% of dogs, and only 2% of cats are returned to their owners.

ID tags come in a variety of sizes and styles. Here is a list of 3 of the most common styles of tags. Order here online, and receive your order in the mail in just a few days!

Your dog or cat should have identification tags attached to his collar with a CURRENT phone number to reach you. Pet tags can help others return your pet to you if they ever become lost or stolen. Make sure to update your tags if your phone number changes. Depending on the design of your tag, you can engrave a personal message. Here are some ideas I have seen.“Hi, my name is Bella 602-761-8590.”“I’m lost, please call Mike 602-761-8590”“Mandy misses me 602-761-8590”“Jack Needs Meds 602-761-8590”“Diabetic Call ASAP 602-761-8590”“Reward if Found 602-761-8590”

Many lost pets don’t find their way home, simply because they are too cute! By personalizing your ID tag message, triggers compassion in whoever mind find your pet. Also, if you pet has a health condition, it is a good idea to list it on the tag.

Many times, pet parents don’t want to shave down their dog. Here are some tips to help you know how to tell if your dog needs a shave down. Watch our work in action! Be sure and contact us the next time you are looking for Phoenix Grooming.

Click here to watch video of our Bichon Shave Down

When to Shave Down a Bichon

Squeeze your dog’s coat through your fingers. If you feel any clumps of hair that feel balled up like cotton, these are matts. Check to see how close to the skin the matt starts. The clippers will have to go UNDER the start of the matt. This might leave a matted dog with very little hair.

Run your fingers through your dog’s hair. If your fingers get stuck in tangles or the hair is too thick, your dog might require a shave down.

If you have a child or other family member with allergies, your doctor might recommend getting your pets shaved down to eliminate excess hair in your home.

If your dog wears lots of clothing or sweaters, she might be prone to matting and tangling.

If you have an elderly or disabled dog, a shave-down might be a good choice for you.

Recent rescued dogs with neglectful pasts sometimes benefit from shavedowns to their coats off fresh.

Dogs with fleas and ticks benefit from shavedowns by giving pests less to grab a hold of.

Reasons NOT to shave down a dog

Shaving down your dog to keep him “cool” is not always the right choice. Your dog’s coat is designed to fan his skin, and provide a protective sleeve from sun exposure. By removing his sun protection, you might expose your dog to harmful rays and sunburn.

Neglectful care. Your dog needs to be groomed more than once every six months. Your busy schedule or lack of money is not an excuse to allow your dog to be neglected. We offer affordable rates to fit anyone’s budget. Please let us know how we can help your dog get the care he needs.

Do not shave down your dog if he has a history of allergic reactions to clippers.

Puppies should not be shaved down, and should be introduced to clippers slowly.

Aggressive dogs should not be shaved down.

Fearful dogs should be introduced to clippers slowly, so shave downs are not recommended. A light trim every couple of weeks until your dog is comfortable with me.
