S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis' advice to children on writing is good advice to anybody.

Always try to use the language so as to make quite clear what you mean and make sure your sentence couldn't mean anything else.

Always prefer the clean direct word to the long, vague one.

Don't implement promises, but keep them.

Never use abstract nouns when concrete ones will do. If you mean "More people died" don't say "Mortality rose."

In writing, don't use adjectives which merely tell us how you want us to feel about the things you are describing. I mean, instead of telling us the thing is "terrible," describe it so that we'll be terrified. Don't say it was "delightful"; make us say "delightful" when we've read the description. You see, all those words (horrifying, wonderful, hideous, exquisite) are only like saying to your readers "Please, will you do my job for me."

Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.

________________________________________

SterlingHouse Publisher seeks submissions for C W Guild

SterlingHouse Publisher Inc. is currently seeking both fiction and non-fiction submissions for publication.We are looking to fill our non-fiction imprints in the following categories:. What are the consequences of our diminishing biodiversity? Why have political lines hardened around an issue so rooted in science?
_____________________________________

Are Your Ready?

The Ability to make and understand Puns is the highest level of language development. But the lowest form of humor

Here are the 10 first place winners in the International Pun Contest:

1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The flight attendant looks at him and says, 'I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger.'

2. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says 'Dam!'

3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly, it immediately sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

4. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says 'I've lost my electron.' The other says 'Are you sure?' The first replies 'Yes, I'm positive.'

5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.

6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse.'But why?', they asked, as they moved off. 'Because,' he said,' I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.'

7. A woman has identical twins and is forced to give them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named 'Ahmal.' The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him 'Juan.' Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, 'They're identical twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal.'

8. A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him.So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to 'persuade' them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent Florist friars.

9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time,which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate veryl ittle, which made him rather frail and, with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

And finally,

10. There was the person who sent ten different puns to friends with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

_____________________________________

This notice is a free service provided by the Chattanooga Writers Guild to encourage and motivate the craft of writing in all genres. No, I don’t mean St. Patrick’s Day or Easter or even Weatherperson’s Day (February 5). I am referring to National Grammar Day, which came and went on March 4 without much hoopla. I have to admit that, although I knew we have much to celebrate on September 24 (National Punctuation Day), I didn’t realize that we “word nerds” have two days a year dedicated to our obsession. I think we should celebrate with a toast to the quirkiness of our rich and enigmatic language. So thanks to Amy B. for sending the following:

The verbs in English are a fright.

How can we learn to read and write?

Today we speak, but first we spoke;

Some faucets leak, but never loke.

Today we write, but first we wrote;

We bite our tongues, but never bote.

Each day I teach, for years I taught,

And preachers preach, but never praught.

This tale I tell; this tale I told;

I smell the flowers, but never smold.

If knights still slay, as once they slew,

Then do we play, as once we plew?

If I still do as once I did,

Then do cows moo, as they once mid?

I love to win, and games I’ve won;

I seldom sin, and never son.

I hate to lose, and games I lost;

I didn’t choose, and never chost.

I love to sing, and songs I sang;

I fling a ball, but never flang.

I strike that ball, that ball I struck;

This poem I like, but never luck.

I take a break, a break I took;

I bake a cake, but never book.

I eat that cake, that cake I ate;

I beat an egg, but never bate.

I often swim, as I once swam;

I skim some milk, but never skam.

I fly a kite that I once flew;

I tie a knot, but never tew.

I see the truth, the truth I saw;

I flee from falsehood, never flaw.

I stand for truth, as I once stood;

I land a fish, but never lood.

About these verbs I sit and think.

These verbs don’t fit. The online publishing, distribution and retail-services company has launched a series of classics in e-book format at http://email.publishersweekly.com/cgi-bin2/DM/y/j4un0H4mRP0OYZ0DZIr0Em. There are more than 100 books available and they are free for anyone to read. Of course, copies of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Three Musketeers have been available free on the Internet for years; so why is Zinio touting its new line? The company "wanted to showcase the most impressive on-screen reading experience while maintaining the integrity and feel of the old classics," said CEO Rich Maggiotto. Zinio currently partners with Hearst, IDG, Hachette Filipacchi, McGraw-Hill, Primedia, Ziff Davis and other media companies, and is seeking to expand its partnerships to more book publishers.

_______________________________________

This notice is a free service provided by the Chattanooga Writers Guild to encourage and motivate the craft of writing in all genres. Over 200 writers, some of them from the Chattanooga Writers Guild, have donated stories sharing the motivation that helps them overcome obstacles and keep the creative juices flowing.
