Album reviews: Tinariwen - Imidiwan: Companions / Aman Aman: Water Is Life

Uncut is proud to announce that Tinariwen have won this year's coveted Uncut Music Award. They succeed Fleet Foxes, who won the inaugural award for the most inspirational and rewarding album of the year in 2008.

Tinariwen’s fourth album, "Imidiwan: Companions", triumphed over some very stiff competition on the shortlist from Kings of Leon, Bob Dylan, Wilco, Animal Collective and The Dirty Projectors. Grizzly Bear were placed second and The Low Anthem third.

Uncut 's Editor and chair of the judges Allan Jones said, "With so much great music to chose from, the judges’ task this year was extremely difficult, but in the end, the panel was unanimous in voting for Imidiwan.

"It’s a fantastically exciting record, full of great, powerful music, passionately and brilliantly played. It had everything the judges were looking for in a potential winner.”

MTV and Gift Music have teamed up to put on a series of live shows. First up it's Temper Trap and Wild Beasts on Wednesday November 11th 2009

For those unfamiliar with Cold Cave, they've just signed to Matador and will be re-releasing their debut album, 'Love Comes Close' this month. Originally released on Eisold's own Heartworm label, it's one of the albums of the year so far.

Koen Holtkamp and Bredon Andregg AKA Brooklyn's sonic sculptors, Mountains, recently released the wonderful new LP, Etching. This was the official release of a live recording that was originally sold exclusively as a CDR on their last tour. The band re-sequenced the music to fit more appropriately on the LP format and issued it in a limited run of 1000 copies. Each LP jacket is hand-stamped and unique.

Etching was recorded in the early winter months of 2009 in Brendon's studio. The whole recording is in real time with no overdubs. The tracks are an early version of the band's live set from their spring Choral tour. Upon it's release, Choral quickly sold out and has since exhausted it's second pressing as well.

The Horrors release new single ‘Whole New Way’

The Horrors are set to release a brand new single on XL Recordings.

‘Whole New Way’, the follow up to ‘Who Can Say’, initially appeared on the Japanese version of their 2009 Barclaycard Mercury nominated second album, ‘Primary Colours’, but was re recorded by The Horrors during the Summer with a little extra production from Studio 13. Released on seven inch vinyl and available to download, vinyl copies of ‘Whole New Way’ come backed with the album’s title track ‘Primary Colours’.

The Horrors set off on an extensive US headline Tour in September before returning to the UK to play ATP, join Placebo on their tour and play headline shows in December, culminating in a London show at the Forum on the 20th of the month.
