After finishing up classes, my friend and I decided to explore the wonderful city that we’ve lived in for the past four years. The West Side Market was the first on our to do list. Home to over 100 different shops representing numerous ethnicities, the market is a Cleveland landmark. You can buy anything from meats to cheese to vegetables to herbs all under one roof. This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to serve as an Ohio delegate at the National Student Nurses Association’s National Convention. We drove the 8 hours from Cleveland, and it was worth every minute of it. We were able to meet so many important figures and hear the speak about the future of nursing. We attended numerous breakout sessions that inspired us to get our local Undergraduate Nurses Student Association more involved in global health. I definitely walked away from the convention feeling like I’m capable of doing so much more in nursing. Best of all, the trip was completely paid for by fundraising and school support!

Springfest is an annual concert that always takes place on the last Saturday of April. This year, Springfest was held on April 27 and featured The Maine and Cleveland local, King Chip. Other performances included Battle of the Bands winners Jordan Genovese, The New 30’s, and Slug Fest. In addition to music, Springfest also offered booths sponsored by CWRU clubs, picnic food, and activities including an inflatable obstacle course. It was a nice way to spend a fun day enjoying time with friends before the start of summer break! -Katherine Wright

It is Israel’s 65th birthday! Hillel is the center for Jewish student life at CWRU, and on Friday they set up a cultural display in front of the Kelvin Smith Library to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, or Israel’s Independence Day. The area was decorated with Israeli flags, cultural music was playing, and there were booths offering free falafel, pita, Israeli salads, and other wonderful Middle Eastern foods. In addition, the cultural display also offered an archaeological excavation, a Dead Sea spa, and a picture in Tel Aviv. -Katherine Wright

Holi is fundamentally a religious Hindu festival. However, in recent years, it has become popular with other communities and regions and is now colloquially known as the Festival of Colors. This is because every spring Holi is held to celebrate the beginning of the new season with the throwing of colored dies. To celebrate the occasion this year, the Undergraduate Indian Students Association hosted Holi for all CWRU students who wanted to join in on the fun and gain some cultural knowledge as well. -Katherine Wright

Senior Spotlight: Andrea Clark. It’s pretty well known that anyone who chooses to double major is crazy. How they have no time to do anything but commit themselves to their studies. How they spend 24/7 at the library studying and hoping that they graduate in 4 years. Yet, Andrea defies all these stereotypes and demonstrates that it is very much possible to accomplish her academic requirements while still having a social life on campus. She is a double major in music and economics, and I had the pleasure of attending her recital last week. CWRU is well known for their engineering, but as Andrea demonstrates, there’s always something for everyone. - Kevin Shui

You know you’re old when you don’t recognize anyone anymore. That was the case during the Late Night Breakfast last night. It’s a semester tradition where faculty and staff come to the dining halls to serve breakfast at 9:30PM to students to help with late night study cravings. Besides traditional breakfast foods, copious amounts of candy are scattered throughout dining halls. I can’t believe that this was the first time that I was able to attend this event… I totally missed out these past 4 years. -Kevin Shui

Today was my last day working on J-31 – Coronary Intensive Care Unit at the clinic. I had spent 336 hours on this floor and became one step closer to graduation, to becoming an ICU nurse. This was one of the best floors I’ve ever had the opportunity to work on. Every single nurse was fantastic, smart, and passionate. The doctors worked closely with the nursing staff. The patients were also extremely grateful for the care that they received. It’s so crazy to think that I’m finally done with my senior practicum. It seemed like only yesterday that I was so intimidated even stepping into the patient’s room to introduce myself. Now, I’m taking care of two extremely sick individuals, oftentimes bringing them back from the brink of death. On the other hand, I’ve experienced death, extreme sadness, pain and suffering. I’ve come an extremely long way these past four years. I can walk away from my undergraduate experience pleased with my education and ready to take on the real world. Thank you CWRU. - Kevin Shui

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo was founded in 1882, making it the seventh oldest zoo in the United States. Today, the zoo is the most popular year-round attraction in Northeast Ohio. Its exhibits include the Rain Forest, African Savanna, Northern Trek, Australian Adventure, and the Primates, Cats, and Aquatics House. My personal favorite is the Rain Forest, which stands apart from the rest of the zoo. The Rain Forest houses a huge tropical garden, a waterfall, many animal exhibits, and a stunning recreation of a tropical island where it periodically rains. -Katherine Wright

In my University Seminar course called Food Craze, I learned about a wonderful local restaurant called Lucky’s Cafe. At Lucky’s Cafe, all the food is handmade with fresh ingredients grown by the restaurant and local Ohio farmers. The cafe gained popularity after it was featured on the Food Network’s show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and received praise from host Guy Fieri. After hearing all the acclaim for Lucky’s Cafe I had to go check it out myself, and the Baked Mac-N-Cheese dish I ate far surpassed my expectations. I definitely recommend this lovely, cozy cafe to anyone looking for a wonderful meal in the Cleveland area! -Katherine Wright

As a reward for completing the volunteering and community requirements for the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning Scholars program, I was invited to attend a celebratory reception. This reception was held at the house of CWRU President Barbara Snyder. I was able to meet President Snyder and discuss with her the wonderful experience I had being involved with the CCEL scholars program and volunteering at the CWRU University Farm. -Katherine Wright

14 minutes is the average lifespan of a plastic bag. In other words, plastic bags are normally used for only 14 minutes before they are thrown away.. and then they spend anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years in a landfill. In order to raise awareness for this environmental issue, the Student Sustainability Council painted, chalked and posted the number 14 around the entire CWRU campus. My roommate is the public relations director of the Student Sustainability Council, and I was so proud of her when I saw all the attention that her 14 minute campaign was receiving around campus. -Katherine Wright

Pyramid is one of the most popular events of Greek Week. In this competition, each contestant has to crawl on their knees between two ropes and form a pyramid behind the second rope. The pyramid is formed by stacking each member of the team on top of each other in rows. Every second counts in this fast-paced competition and the best teams can form a pyramid in under 20 seconds. -Katherine Wright

On Friday night, the Greek Week variety show took place in downtown Cleveland at the beautiful Ohio Theatre. For variety show, each fraternity and sorority creates a performance that incorporates both acting and dancing. The performance that I enjoyed the most was one that mimicked the skits and dance sequences of the classic movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Variety show was definitely my favorite event of Greek Week and I loved both watching and performing! -Katherine Wright

Last night, a Greek Week singing competition called Greek Sing took place. In this event, each fraternity and sorority changes the words to popular songs to fit the theme of Greek Week. This year’s theme is Reduce, Reuse, Re-Greek Week. Each sorority and fraternity had wonderful performances, but the victors of the competition were Alpha Chi Omega for the sororities and Sigma Nu for the fraternities. -Katherine Wright

This week I received the wonderful news that I was accepted into the University of Auckland, New Zealand. This means that I will be studying abroad there during fall semester next year. The University of Auckland is in the top 1% of the world’s universities, and the city of Auckland itself is considered the third best city in the world according to the Mercer Quality of Living Survey. I am unbelievably excited to study abroad in this wonderful place, and I am so grateful for the CWRU Education Abroad Office for providing this opportunity to me. -Katherine Wright

On March 19, the CWRU University Programing Board hosted Seth Meyers and Colin Jost at Severance Hall. Seth Meyers is a comedian who currently works as the head writer for NBC’s Saturday Night Live. He’s most famous for hosting the news parody segment called Weekend Update. Colin Jost works for Saturday Night Live as well and helps Seth Meyers out as a co-writer. The two comedians put on a hilarious performance that I truly enjoyed. -Katherine Wright
