Smartphone makers bullish despite iPhone 3G

Written by Simon Burns, vnunet.com : Smartphone makers and analysts have downplayed fears that Apple’s iPhone 3G could pose a serious challenge for older smartphone manufacturers.
Analysts from Primasia Securities said in a report on major Taiwanese smartphone maker High Tech Computer (HTC) that concern about the iPhone 3G is ” overblown”.
HTC’s share price plunged after the new iPhone was introduced. The new handset is causing particular concern among smartphone industry investors, because at $199 it has much lower upfront costs that the original iPhone.
Samsung is confident that its newly introduced Omnia SGH-i900 will be able to compete with the iPhone, a representative of the South Korean electronics firm told local media yesterday.
In fact, Samsung believes that the iPhone could help stimulate sales of smartphones with similar features. Primasia agreed that the iPhone could create an “entry point” for competitors such as HTC.
“The smartphone market is not crowded. There are only three major players, Apple, RIM and HTC, in the non-Symbian based smartphone camp,” said Primasia analysts.
“And with an estimated 40 per cent plus growth rate for this sector in 2008, we believe the market is too pessimistic on the iPhone 3G’s impact on HTC’s growth.”
However, despite the upbeat tone of the message, Primasia warned investors that market sentiment was pushing down HTC’s share price following the launch of the Apple and Samsung handsets.
Both products are being seen as competitors for HTC’s Diamond smartphone.

Firefox 3 to launch on 17 June

Following two release candidates on the PC and three on the Mac, the latest iteration of the open source browser has been declared ready for general consumption.
“After more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we are proud to announce that we are ready,” wrote Mike Beltzner on the Mozilla community blog.
Mozilla is pitching the launch as Download Day 2008 in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of downloads in 24 hours.
So far over a million users around the world have pledged to download the new browser on 17 June.

Apple Store to open in Beijing

Written by Simon Burns, vnunet.com : China may be about to see the opening of its first official Apple Store as the firm prepares to launch the iPhone in the country.
Apple currently distributes its products in China through a network of several hundred licensed dealers. Some other products, such as the original iPhone, are widely available as unofficial grey market imports.
An Apple dealer in Beijing told local news service Sina that Apple plans to open a 1,000 square metre store on three floors in a central Beijing shopping centre and office development.
While the dealer did not provide an opening date, other businesses in the new building are expected to open during July and August.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said in interviews this week that he expects the iPhone to become available in China and Russia this year.
The new iPhone 3G will go on sale in the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong on 11 July, according to Apple representatives quoted in local media.
Apple has reportedly discussed launching the iPhone in China with dominant local mobile operator China Mobile.
However, a source at China Mobile said that talks had broken down because the two companies each wanted a larger share of user revenue than the other was willing to offer.
Local sources suggest that the smaller of China’s two mobile operators, China Unicom, may now be more likely to become Apple’s iPhone partner.
This is based on predictions that China Unicom will received a 3G WCDMA licence from the government.
China’s government is expected to allow operators to begin rolling out the country’s first full-scale 3G phone networks later this year, following years of delays while a local 3G standard was developed.

O2 promises UK iPhone 3G on 11 July

As with the original device, the newest incarnation of Apple’s iconic phone will be available in the UK through O2 and Carphone Warehouse.
“The iPhone has been a phenomenal success for us,” said Matthew Key, chairman and chief executive at O2 owner Telefónica Europe.
The 8GB model will cost £99 on a new £30 a month tariff and the existing £35 per month tariff. Consumers choosing either the £45 or £75 per month tariffs will get the 8GB iPhone 3G for free.
The 16GB iPhone 3G will cost £159 on the £30 and £35 tariffs, £59 on the £45 tariff and is free on the £75 tariff.
Apple’s phone will also be available on current O2 business tariffs as a monthly bolt on. The device will be available for free on the majority of business tariffs on a 24-month or 36-month contract.
Existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G regardless of where they are in their contract, but will have to commit to another 18 months.
Orange will release the iPhone 3G in Austria, Portugal and Switzerland on 11 July and in France on 17 July.
T-Mobile has revealed that the new phone will be available in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands on 11 July, and in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia later this year.

Motorola offers full-length mobile movies

However, the deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment will win few friends among mobile data providers.
Consumers will download titles to their PCs from Motorola’s site and then side-load them to their phones.
Motorola claims that high phone charges incurred in downloading or streaming movies over the air has prevented the market for mobile movies from blossoming. Side-loading overcomes that hurdle, the firm believes.
Consumers will pay between £5.99 and £8.99 per title to download movies such as The Italian Job.
Motorola does not expect the service to replace home screens, but to develop a new market where customers “snack” on 20-minute chunks of entertainment while commuting, for example.
The company has already made inroads into the mobile movie space with the inclusion of titles such as The Bourne Identity on microSD with the sale of its Z8 phone.
Other handset makers are expected to offer similar services later this year.

Cyber-crooks sting South Africa for £13 million

The crimes were revealed by the South African Minister for Finance and Economic Development, and have resulted in 32 arrests in connection with more than 80 separate fraud counts.
The case is thought to be South Africa’s largest reported cyber-crime spree by a single gang.
Geoff Sweeney, chief technology officer at IT security vendor Tier-3, said that spyware attacks are notoriously difficult to stop owing to their unpredictable nature.
“The evolution of malware has reached the point where the lines are blurring between viruses, Trojans and what we call multi-vector IT security threats,” he said.
“These fraudsters appeared to use a sophisticated combination of attacks that consisted of a physical device and a malware component, as witnessed by the fact they have been getting away with their crimes for nigh on three years.”
Sweeney warned that, in common with more sophisticated IT security attacks, frauds of this nature are very difficult to stop using a traditional single line of defence.
“Companies need to rethink their strategy in the light of the increasing sophistication on the part of the fraudsters,” he said.
“They should consider installing multiple layers of defence, including behavioural analysis technology which can look for abnormal patterns of hardware change or network behaviour such as those that may have been used in this attack.”
Sweeney believes that behavioural analysis is “a security technology in the ascendant” for the simple reason that it acts as a safety net for all forms of IT security threats.
“Had the South African government and its agencies installed this form of security technology, they could have avoided the fraud taking place,” he said.

ISO puts standard for Microsoft’s OOXML document formats on hold

Written by Stefan Krempl : After member states filed four complaints against the standardisation of Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) document format, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in Geneva have responded by postponing publication of the revised specification. As the ISO announced, the planned ISO/IEC DIS 29500 cannot be published until these complaints have been heard. Procedure requires that they be dealt with by the end of June, when the ISO and IEC have to hand over their comments on the complaints to two management committees for a final decision.
Brazil, India, South Africa, and Venezuela have officially filed complaints against the controversial certification of OOXML in expedited proceedings in Geneva. These emerging nations are concerned that no consensus was reached about which changes need to be made to the specification, which is more than 6000 pages long, during consultation on the numerous comments submitted at the end of February, after the first attempt to adopt OOXML as a standard failed in 2007. Specifically, they complained that concrete technical objections were not individually discussed .
A member of the technical standardisation committee in India has even summarised his concerns in an open letter. He writes that it is not even clear which standard will come out of these expedited proceedings. And if a standard that has not been properly thought out is adopted, Microsoft will probably be the only one to implement it – which, he explains, is the exact opposite of an open process.
The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), which promotes work on the next version of the Open Document Format (ODF) already certified by the ISO, has invited interested parties to develop a new technical committee for the “implementation, interoperability, and conformity” of ODF. Collaboration could then be intensified with other standardisation institutes, such as the ISO or the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Microsoft had previously announced that it would join the technical OASIS committee for further work on ODF. Skeptics from the open-source camp have therefore been calling on everyone to keep a close eye on the new alliance behind OASIS.
