New York: A hardy, heat-resistant, graphite-based memory device holds the potential of making massive amounts of storage available for computers, handheld media players, cell phones and cameras.

Rice University researchers, who are currently developing the device, said the solid-state device takes advantage of the conducting properties of graphene and would have many advantages over today's state-of-the-art flash memory and other new technologies.

Graphene memory would increase the amount of storage in a two-dimensional array by a factor of five, said James Tour, who led the research team.

This is so because individual bits could be made smaller than 10 nanometres, compared to the 45-nanometre circuitry in today's flash memory chips.

Findings of the new research have been published online in the journal Nature Materials.

Being essentially a mechanical device, such chips will consume virtually no power while keeping data intact -- much the same way today's e-book readers keep the image of a page visible even when the power is off.

What distinguishes graphene from other next-generation memories is the on-off power ratio -- the amount of power a circuit holds when it's on, as opposed to off.

"It's huge - a million-to-one," said Tour. "Phase change memory, the other thing the industry is considering, runs at 10-to-1. That means the 'off' state holds, say, one-tenth the amount of electrical current than the 'on' state."

Current tends to leak from an "off" that's holding a charge. "That means in a 10-by-10 grid, 10 'offs' would leak enough to look like they were 'on.' With our method, it would take a million 'offs' in a line to look like 'on'," he said. "So this is big. It allows us to make a much larger array."

While generating little heat itself, graphene memory seems impervious to a wide temperature range, having been tested from minus 75 to more than 200 degrees Celsius with no discernable effect, Tour said.

That allows graphene memory to work in close proximity to hot processors. Better still, tests show it to be impervious to radiation, making it suitable for extreme environments.

Tour said the new switches are faster than his lab's current testing systems can measure. And they're robust. "We've tested it in the lab 20,000 times with no degradation," said Tour. "It's lifetime is going to be huge, much better than flash memory."

Best of all, the raw material is far from exotic. Graphene is a form of carbon. In a clump it's called graphite, which you spread on paper every time you use a pencil.

Google kills Lively

Washington: Google has unveiled a new tool which allows users to customise search results and announced it is ending its virtual world experiment, Lively. Google, in a posting on its official blog said a new feature known as SearchWiki allows users to personalise search results by editing them according to their own preferences.

SearchWiki lets users who have a Google Account rearrange their search results, re-ranking websites by moving them up or down in the results page. Useless search results can be deleted and others can be added.

"With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site," Google said. "You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don't feel belong."

The Mountain View, California-company said the modifications will be shown the next time users log on and will not affect searches done by others.

SearchWiki marks the first time that Google, which dominates Internet search with more than 70 per cent of all US searches in October according to Hitwise, has allowed users to modify search results. San Francisco: The volume of spam on the Internet plunged by about two thirds this week after two US internet service providers cut the Internet connections of a company that was using its servers to disseminate billions of unwanted email messages, Internet security firms said Friday.

Symantec said the number of spam messages had fallen by some 120 billion per day, to around 60 billion. However it warned that many of the spam spewers would probably find new routes to distribute their messages and that the respite was likely only temporary.

Nevertheless the success was greeted as a sign of the validity of the new anti-spam approach that traced the messages back to a Silicon Valley company called McColo, which rents out servers to clients. After researchers identified the company they also contacted its two major internet access providers, Hurricane Electric and Global Crossing, which promptly cut its internet connection.

The report identifying McColo was published anonymously by the ad-hoc team of researchers who said that among other things, McColo reportedly enabled its customers to control vast networks of hijacked computers to send spam and take payments for fake anti-virus software. McColo at one time hosted up to 40 Web sites with child pornography, the report said.

"We got the report, and it looked pretty damning," said Benny Ng, director of infrastructure at Hurricane Electric, of Fremont, California. "They were a client of ours, and we turned them of

Do you know the differences between Windows Stand By and Hibernate? These two Windows XP shutdown options often confuse people. These power saving options offer advantages, but it’s important to know the differences when creating a power scheme for your notebook or desktop.

Most people understand Turn Off and Restart as they’re frequently used. Where people get confused is between Stand By and Hibernate. The main differences lie in power consumption and data storage.
Windows Stand By Maintains a Fast State of Readiness

When you hear the term “stand by” you think of a resource that is ready to go once called. The concept is similar in Windows. Your computer returns to a state of readiness when you press a key or the power button. The time it takes your PC to resume or shut down is seconds.

Your machine recovers quickly as your data is stored in RAM. The slower part is waking up the peripherals. Although your machine is in “stand by” the power has been cut to items such as your hard drive and monitor. You’re running your machine in a very low power mode, but it is still on. This mode can be useful if you’re on a notebook and need to conserve your battery while you step away.

If you have a notebook, you wouldn’t want to keep your computer in this state for more than several hours. The first issue is that even though you’re in a low power consumption state, you’re still using power. The bigger reason is once your power goes, so does your data.

The big drawback to Stand By is you run the risk of losing whatever data you were working on if the power goes out. As a precaution, you might want to save the data before putting your computer in this mode or use Hibernate.
Windows Hibernate Takes a Longer Term Approach

An option with a longer perspective is hibernate. Like Stand By, you can recover your place. The big difference is that your PC has shut down and is not pulling power. Another difference is that your data is saved to your hard disk and not RAM. This makes it a safer, but slower option for shut down and resume.

Hibernate will save your desktop and open files to a special Windows file called hiberfil.sys. This large file usually resides in your root folder (c:\hiberfil.sys). The file size closely matches how much RAM your PC has installed. If you have 2 gigs of RAM on your notebook, you’re going to have to give up 2 gigs of hard disk space. Note: You can delete the hiberfil.sys file only if you disable hibernate.

When you press your power button, Windows will start and open the files you were using. The process is not instantaneous as with Stand By, but gets you to the same place. You may find this option is faster than rebooting, as Windows doesn’t have to do things such as detecting your hardware.
Where is the Hibernate Option?

Hibernate doesn’t show by default. Your manufacturer has to have included the functionality and it needs to be enabled. Even then, there is a trick to seeing this option. Usually, when you turn off your computer you see the following dialog.

If you hold down your Shift key, you’ll see the Stand By option changes to Hibernate.

If you still can’t see the option, you should check your Power Options Properties in your Control Panel.
Creating a Windows XP Power Scheme

Most Windows XP systems allow you to set various power options. This is ideal for notebook users who wish to conserve power after a certain period of inactivity. It’s also useful for desktop owners who wish to conserve power. As example, you might want to create a profile that first puts your computer into Stand By mode and then goes into Hibernate after another time.

To create a Power Profile in Windows XP,

1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel

2. Select Performance and Maintenance

3. Select Power Options.

Your system should display the Power Options Properties dialog with various tabs. The number of tabs will vary based on your manufacturer and if you have a UPS. Notebook systems have extra settings so you can set a scheme for when you’re using direct power or batteries.

4. Click the Hibernate tab. Check the box if you wish to enable this feature.

5. Click the Power Schemes tab.

6. Set your options to suit your needs. If you’re on a notebook, make sure that your hibernate time is less than your battery time. Otherwise, your battery will drain before the option can kick in.

7. Click OK.

We may be use to cheap and abundant energy, but there is little need to keeping your computer fully powered. Microsoft and various hardware vendors have improved the power management systems. The bigger question is whether you should use Stand By, Hibernate or both.

Well here are some ways in order to shutdown your PC with the help of a Timer.
METHOD 1
Do you know that you can make your PC shutdown at a time u wish to?
Here is the trick! How To Make A Shutdown Timer!
Step 1:
Right click on your desktop and choose “New=>shortcuts“.
Step 2:
In the box that says “Type the location of the shortcut“,
type in “shutdown -s -t 3600” without the quotation marks and click next.
Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , 60secs*60mins=3600secs.
Step 3:
Make up a name for the shortcut and you’re done.
You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse.
To abort:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make the “location of the shortcut” to “ shutdown -a” without the quotes.
METHOD 2
Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in

Dragonflies are the mortal enemy for mosquitoes and in flight they generate sound frequencies (approximately) between 67 Hz and 45 Hz, depending on their sizes.

There are many sound and tone generator programs available on the internet for both the Mac and Windows PC. Setup your computer with the sound/tone generator program running and then play the sound through your computer speakers. The speakers can be aimed directionally for complete room coverage.

I read about this trick the other day over Internet.
Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT.
Navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl].
If you see an entry by the name IRQ8Priority set it to a value"IRQ8Priority"=dword:00000001
if you don't then click on the right pane and add a new dword entry with given name.
IRQ8 is typically reserved for real time clock in most of the computers.
Make sure thats the case (by going to device manager -> system devices -> system COMS/realtime clock -> properties -> resources tab , if it is set to another number try adding an entry with that number N as IRQNPriority) . Generally realtime clock priority boosting helps most but you are free to try others as well.

1.Using the FireFox browser, download and install the SwitchProxy plug-in for FireFox.
2.Proceed to finding a free proxy server, I recommend the Steganos Proxies list.
3.Proceed to Rapidshare's download link and start the download. Do not use a download manager (No FlashGet), simply use FireFox's download manager by itself. (This is because Flashget uses your real IP, not the one loaded by the SwitchProxy plug-in)
4.Load the SwitchProxy plug-in and use one of the proxies. This does not interfere with your current download.
5.Proceed to a second Rapidshare download link. In most cases, it should begin a second download. However, if it reads an error (already downloading), then the selected proxy is still submitting your real IP to RapidShare. This may not be your fault, as some free proxies use your real IP.
6.If you get this error, simply try the next available proxy in the list.
7.To begin another download, repeats the steps using a new proxy in the list. This can be done an unlimited amount of times (or until you run out of working proxies).

mkdir temphack (creates the folder temphack)

copy logon.scr temphack\logon.scr (backsup logon.scr)

del logon.scr (deletes original logon.scr)
