Hans Reiser get 15 years for Murder

The famous Hans Reiser the developer and founder of the ReiserFS file system software--was found guilty in April of first-degree murder in the 2006 killing of his wife. The famous Linux programmer convicted of killing his wife was sentenced Friday afternoon to 15 years to life in prison.

Namesys, the company run by Hans Reiser, has fallen off the face of the Internet, but the file-system software it was commercializing is still under development by volunteers.

In a report by Wired's David Kravets that before he was formally sentenced, Reiser vowed to make up to society for what he had done and said he was putting Namesys and ReiserFS into a trust fund for his children. Reiser added that he hoped to earn money for his kids while in prison, assuming he's "able to get access to a computer and the Internet," according to Kravets.

Intel acquires Linux Mobile Developers

Intel Corp. has acquired Opened Hand, a London-based company which specializes in mobile Linux development and services.

"Opened Hand brings great expertise and technology in the area of user-interaction frameworks, improving Intel's ability to address the unique challenges of enabling cutting edge UIs for these new class of devices," a spokesperson for Intel told ZDNet.co.uk.

Intel will continue to support existing Opened Hand projects, including software library Clutter, used for GUI creation, and Matchbox, an open-source base environment for the X Window System. These projects will become part of the Moblin project.

Opened Hand, which has Nokia Internet Tablets, One Laptop Per Child, Openmoko, and Vernier as clients, will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center.

Intel will start to roll next month its new technology called Remote Wake - the ability for a computer to be turned on from sleep mode remotely. Applications that have already been designed around this technology include PC-based phone service and content delivery.

Remote Wake underscores another facet of computing: the evolution of the PC into a media center. "Intel is smart enough to know which direction the industry is headed," Robert Levitan, CEO of Pando Networks, a content delivery company that is partnering with Intel, told TechNewsWorld. This woman pays £25,000 for South Korean scientists to create five identical copies of beloved pit bull terrier.

According to the Guardian.

Geneticists today unveiled five identical copies of Booger the pit bull terrier created for his American owner. The five clones cost Bernann McKinney, a Californian-based farmer, £25,000 ($50,000) and were well worth it, she said at a press conference in the South Korean capital, Seoul, where the announcement was made.

"Booger was my partner and my friend," McKinney said, as she collected the five puppies, named Booger Bernann, Booger Ra, Booger Lee, Booger Hong and Booger Park.

Genetic cloning arouses fierce opposition over ethics and morality, but McKinney said she believed it was justified. "I wanted my friend back," she said. "Booger taught me I could do anything I could do before the accident. I just had to figure out a different way to do it."

The curved sensor has properties that are found in eyes, such as a wide field of view, that can't be produced in digital cameras without a lot of complexity, says John Rogers, lead researcher on the project. "One of the most prominent [features of the human eye] is that the detector surface of the retina is not planar like the digital chip in a camera," he says. "The consequence of that is [that] the optics are well suited to forming high-quality images even with simple imaging elements, such as the single lens of the cornea."

The key to the spherical camera is a sensor array that can withstand a curve of about 50 percent of its original shape without breaking, allowing it to be removed from the stiff wafer on which it was originally fabricated and transferred to a rubberlike surface. "Doing that requires more than just making the detector flexible," says Rogers. "You can't just wrap a sphere with a sheet of paper. You need stretchability in order to do a geometry transformation."

Sun Takes a Shine to Linux in New Web Stack

Sun Microsystems is now joining the party with its own take on the LAMP stack -- one that could pose a challenge to the LAMP offerings from Linux vendors, since it's aimed at users of Linux as well as Sun Solaris. Eventually, it will support Windows and Mac OS X, too.

Officially called the Web Stack by Sun, the new enterprise "AMP" (Apache, MySQL and PHP) stack also aims to create a new revenue stream from Linux for Sun.

"We've now made the commitment to provide full enterprise support for the AMP stack on Solaris and Linux this year and probably early next year, on Windows and Mac OS X," Ken Drachnik, community development and marketing manager for Sun's open source group, told InternetNews.com.

Not all flavors of Linux will be supported initially, however. Drachnik said Sun would first provide the Web Stack on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with other distributions, like Ubuntu Linux, to follow.

NASA's Phoenix lander has discovered a toxic chemical in soil near Mars' north pole, dimming hopes for finding life on the Red Planet, the probe's operators said Monday.

The new findings from Phoenix cast into further doubt the possibility that life exists on Mars' surface. But they do not rule out the possibility that life once existed, nor do they necessarily rule out the possibility of life existing now, perhaps in a deep underground aquifer.

The hints Apple dropped during its latest financial open house have had the company's fans guessing about what the "wonderful new products" in line to launch soon will be. In a recent report told that granite counter tops could endanger your family. A physics professor at Rice University is warning of a radioactive threat found in some kitchen countertops.

Some granite countertops contain levels of uranium high enough to be dangerous to humans, said Rice professor W.J. Llope.

Using a spectrometer, Llope tested 25 varieties of granite bought from Houston-area dealers. In some cases, he said, he found countertops that could expose homeowners to 100 millirems of radiation in just a few months — the annual exposure limit set by the Department of Energy for visitors to nuclear labs.

Ramji, who made the announcements at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) Friday, promised "a lot more" PHP patches in the coming months now Microsoft had established processes he said clarified how employees can contribute to open source.

In a further move towards greater support of open source, Microsoft is becoming a platinum member of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), paying $100,000 annual membership. The move follows work between the two to support the Office Open XML file formats in Apache's POI project.

Microsoft's new love for FSF licensing and PHP is not exactly unselfserving. The decision to work on PHP fits with the overall strategy of improving the language's interoperability with Windows and stemming the loss of PHP application deployments to Linux. LGPL allows code to be used with proprietary programs - such as SQL Server - unlike its GPL cousin.

NASA uncovers secret of the Northern Lights

Recent report of NASA's fleet of five THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) satellites have discovered what turns on the Northern Lights. Researchers say "an explosion of magnetic energy a third of the way to the moon powers substorms, sudden brightenings, and rapid movements of the aurora borealis" or Northern Lights.

The key to the auroras is magnetic reconnection, which NASA describes as "stressed magnetic field lines that suddenly snap to a new shape, like a rubber band that's been stretched too far," causing a burst of light and movement near the northern and southern poles. "We discovered what makes the Northern Lights dance," said UCLA's Vassilis Angelopoulos, who is the principal investigator for the THEMIS mission.
