The Asha 501 is positively dinky (99.2 x 58 x 12.1 mm) compared to most modern smartphones. The 3-inch form factor means that it’s compact and easy to use with one hand, although at times it can feel more like a children’s toy than a cutting edge piece of consumer electronics.

The device consists of two core parts, a seamless and removable rear plastic monobody coupled with a single display assembly on the front, which houses all of the internal hardware including the battery, microSD card slot and one or two micro-SIM cards.

It’s not the thinnest or lightest smartphone on the market, but there’s a simplicity and consistency in the hardware design that makes it pretty gorgeous to look at and hold. Users can pry the case off at any time by pressing the colored plastic nub on the back of the device, enabling quick switching with friends and family.

The process isn’t as effortless as you might imagine – I found myself grappling with the back cover on a number of occasions – but it’s playful and adds to Nokia’s vibrant and simplistic approach to hardware. The Asha 501 is available in yellow, red, blue, green, white or black and they all look pretty pleasing on the eye; this is a smartphone that will certainly draw attention on the street or at your local bar, despite its tiny $99 price tag.

A notification center of sorts is available by pulling down from the top of the display. There’s a handful of toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other connectivity options, as well as the time and the status of both SIM cards. It’s clean and intuitive, if a little basic.

With our test unit, we also stumbled across a number of problems when transferring the final images with a USB cable. The issue is presumably fixed in the retail version, but left us feeling all the more disheartened.

Video is a similar affair. The handset spits out QVGA files at a resolution of 240 x 320 and 14 frames per second. It’s borderline useless and the footage produced is downright embarrassing for sharing online. Best avoided in pretty much all circumstances.

The Asha 501 is priced incredibly low, so expectations as to its power and display need to be tempered accordingly. The handset sports a 3-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, or 133 ppi (pixels per inch). That’s certainly on the low side – especially compared to budget Android handsets – and it really shows in day-to-day use. Icons and on-screen text look noticeably rough around the edges and individual pixels are easily identifiable.

Brightness isn’t an issue though and viewing angles are respectable for a TFT display of this size. Under the hood, Nokia has opted for a 1GHz processor with just 64MB of internal storage, although it’s backed up with the aforementioned microSD slot for an additional 32GB. A 4GB card is also packed in with the retail model, which is a nice touch for anyone looking to immediately download some apps, take some photos and store multimedia content.

How to clean LCD monitor screen.

1.Prepare the screen.

At minimum turn the device off, but ideally you should unplug it. Do not clean a screen until it is cool to the touch. Cleaning warm/hot screens (like those found on plasma HDTVs) makes them more difficult to clean at best and can damage them at worst.

2.Dust the screen.

Your step in cleaning a screen should always be to remove as much from the screen as possible without actually touching it. To this end a can of compressed air (held upright and at least a foot or more from the screen) can be used to dislodge most electrostatically-adhered dust particles. More ideal than a can of compressed air (which can potentially blast your screen with residual propellant from the can) would be to use a simple rubber dusting bulb (much like the kind we used to clean out a DSLR camera). Remember, the less you touch your screen the better.

3.Lightly wipe the screen with a dry and clean microfiber cloth.

Microfiber is a miracle of modern technology; put it to good use. No paper towels, no kitchen towels, no household rags; only microfiber should touch your screen. For stubborn dust that won’t blow off the screen and the occasional fingerprint, a simple pass with a clean and dry microfiber cloth is usually sufficient.

4.When wiping the screen, always avoid making circular “buffing” motions.

Clean with a slow and light touch moving in as broad a motion as you can either left to right or up and down across the screen. Although the microfiber should pose little to no risk to the screen, by avoiding cleaning in small circular motions you avoid the risk of creating buffed out spots or whorl marks on the surface of the screen. Light pressure and wide movements are the safest.

5.Lightly wipe the screen with a microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water.

While microfiber is usually quite good at lifting up the dust and oil on its own, if you need some extra cleaning power feel free to slightly dampen the the cloth with distilled water (avoid tap water as it can leave mineral deposits and film on the screen). Distilled water is available at your local grocer and is commonly used for humidifiers and irons. The cloth should be damp enough that it feels wet to the touch but not so damp that any water could be wrung out of it. Remember: you don’t want a single drop of water running down your screen and getting inside the bezel.

6.Lightly wipe the screen with a microfiber cloth dampened with a 50/50 distilled water and white vinegar mixture.

For 99% of your everyday dust and finger prints, a damp microfiber cloth will save the day. But let’s say that’s not cutting it because your kid tried to feed Big Bird a piece of peanut butter coated toast through the television set. This is where having an additional cleaning agent to cut through the grime is necessary. Alcohol and ammonia are out, but a mixture of 50% distilled water and 50% white household vinegar is in.

After diluting the mixture down and lightly dampening your microfiber cloth, use the same light pressure and wide movements we previously discussed. There’s no need to follow the vinegar mixture with plain water or a dry microfiber cloth (unless of course you made the screen too damp — wipe up any excess moisture with a dry microfiber cloth immediately).

Don't do following things for your monitor

Don't apply cleaning fluid directly to the screen.

Spraying cleaning fluid directly onto your monitor or HDTV is an absolute recipe for disaster. Even though it has never been recommended to spray a cleaning product directly onto a monitor or television set, historically the CRT component of monitors and television sets was essentially a giant glass vessel that was, at least when approached from the front with a spray bottle, water tight. The chances of you damaging a 2″ thick 1980s-era glass monitor screen with a quick blast of cleaning fluid and a wipe with a rag were as close to zero as you can get.

That’s absolutely not the case with modern screens. Flat screen monitors and HDTV sets are made with layer upon layer of material including various plastics, glasses, adhesives, arrays of display elements, and other fine and very thin materials. When liquid touches the edge of these finely layered screens that liquid can very easily wick, via capillary action, right up inside the layers just like water quickly moves across a piece of cloth that touches it.

The photo at the start of this section, with the horrible black blob in the corner of the monitor, is an example of what happens when liquid reaches the edge of a monitor’s display panel and wicks up inside. Although the damaged spot may shrink slightly, the chances of the liquid evaporating are next to zero and the chances of it evaporating without leaving residual damage are zero.

Don't use alcohol or ammonia-based cleaning fluid on your screen.

We understand why many people use window cleaner on their monitors, many high-end flat screen computer monitors and HDTV sets have a nice glossy glass screen. The problem, however, is that both ammonia-based cleaners (e.g. window cleaners like Windex) and alcohol-based cleaners (diluted rubbing alcohol or specialty alcohol cleaners sold in electronics stores) can strip anti-reflective coatings off screens, cause clouding, or otherwise damage the screen. Even if you have a glossy glass screen, that screen is most likely coated with things that aren’t as durable and chemically resistant as glass. Don’t risk using using alcohol or ammonia-based cleaning fluids.

Don't use paper towels or general purpose cleaning rags.

At the risk of sounding like we’re repeating the same caution over and over again–modern displays are very delicate. Paper towels are not designed for cleaning delicate surfaces, they’re designed for wiping up bacon grease and hairballs; the surface of paper towel, on a microscopic level, is fairly abrasive and can lead to buffed spots and scratches on your monitor. In the same league as paper towels are general purpose rags from around the house. A single tiny spec of anything abrasive in the rag (e.g. a tiny sliver of metal from the garage or a hitch hiking grain of sand from a beach trip) will wreak complete havoc on your screen. By the time you’ve made a pass or two with the tainted rag, you’ve already left a scratch in the screen.

If you can steadfastly obey these three rules: never spray on the screen itself, never use harsh ammonia/alcohol-based cleaners, and never use paper towels or household rags, you’ll automatically avoid just about every cleaning-related tragedy that could befall an unsuspecting monitor.

Internally, the new Nexus 7 packs a 1.5Ghz quad core processor, 2GB of RAM and comes with either 16GB or 32GB of storage. Those models go for $229/£200 and $269/£240, and there's also an LTE version selling for $300/£299. Sadly, we don't yet have official word on Australian pricing.While microSD slots now feel like a relic of a bygone era, since neither Nexus nor Apple devices offer them, we have to bemoan storage space a bit here. Start rooting for the little guy; the Nexus 7 is small, even alongside other 7-inch tablets. At 7.87 x 4.49 x 0.34-inches, it's slightly slimmer than the original Nexus 7, which measured 7.81 x 4.72 x 0.41-inches. So it's a tad a thinner, and therefore even easier to hold in one hand, something we've never felt entirely comfortable doing with the wider iPad mini.
It's not too small, but we wouldn't want it any smaller. As it is now, it's the perfect size to toss in a bag or even a coat pocket. We've always considered 7-inchers to be travel tablets and 10-inch ones to be couch companions, and the new Nexus 7 fills this role perfectly, a featherweight at just 0.64lbs (290g).
Alas, the amount of storage on the device is also lightweight. Our 32GB Nexus 7 came with 6GB already occupied by onboard software. That left us with just 26GB to play with. That's not too bad, but those eyeing up the 16GB model should be warned that they'll have just 10GB available. That, compounded with the lack of microSD slot and 64GB option, may disappoint media hounds looking to carry a large collection of movies at all times.

The one disadvantage of 16:9 is that it gives the Nexus 7 a ton of bezel -- unused space between the screen and the actual edge of the tablet. Because of the aspect ratio, the Nexus would need to get wider before it could get taller. That's not something we'd want, since we love how one-hand friendly this device is. It's a catch 22, and we think Google and Asus ultimately made the right call here.
The new Nexus 7 also has a very bright display display, with auto-brightness doing a perfect job of adapting to your environment. Like any tablet, it's at its best in moderate indoor light. It does washout in bright direct sunlight, but no more than the best displays out there.
It's not the best we've seen at handling colors though. They're not true to life, generally erring on the side of being slightly faded. It's really only something you can pick up on with a direct one to one comparison though.

Compare a digital comic

Compare a digital comic on the Nexus 7 to its print counterpart, or to a movie on quality HDTV and you can see the difference. Skin tones were a bit too light, including the Hulk from The Avengers, whose signature green pigment was shade lighter than Stan Lee would sign off on. Also, some sky blues were actually darker on the tablet than on the page.
Basically, the color accuracy is all over the map, but you'd have to be Rembrandt to really be bothered by it. For the sake of thoroughness though, it does merit a mention.
It still does fine work with video, streaming or locally stored. That 16:9 aspect is perfect for Netflix, and it's diminutive size makes it very easy to hold with one hand or two. And all that bezel space actually gives you somewhere to grip it without obscuring the screen.

It's a good movie watching device, but we were actually most impressed with the reading on the Nexus 7. That high resolution, pixel dense display is the best tablet reading experience we've had on a backlit screen.
A device without a backlight, like a Kindle Paperwhite, will always be less trying on the eyes longterm, but as far as devices without e-ink go, the new Nexus 7 is king. Text is newspaper crisp, so much so that you may end up giving yourself an accidental eye exam. On a non-mobile site, it's tempting to read tiny shrunken print rather than zoom in. Don't strain your eyes though, no matter how impressive you might find this display.
The speakers have been given an upgrade from the original Nexus 7. The tablet now sports stereo sound, thanks dual speaker grills on the rear. The grills are large, and well-placed, so they're difficult to cover with your digits when holding the tablet. We actually had trouble trying to muffle them on purpose when testing.

The surround sound effect is surprising for tablet speakers, and sounds don't crackle and distort when the volume is cranked all the way. Overall, the sound is a big step up from the original Nexus 7, but the speakers still aren't terribly loud. It's fine for sharing a video in a quiet or moderately noisy space, but in a crowded and loud public space, the audio will drown out. We'd recommend some headphones.
Speaking of headphones, the audio jack is found on the top right of the tablet. It's well placed by default, since you can rotate the tablet any way you like and the image will reorient itself. Therefore, if you want your cord plugging in at the top, or trailing down from the bottom, iPhone 5 style, it's your prerogative.

Most laptops still don’t have all-day battery life. Rather than always using your laptop tethered to an outlet, here are some ways to squeeze more life from your laptop’s battery.

Pay atention for Bluetooth and Other Hardware Devices

Your laptop likely has a Bluetooth radio and may even have an infrared (IR) port. All of these devices use battery power simply by being enabled and powered on. You can save battery power by disabling them when you aren’t using them. To disable Bluetooth, you can often press the Function (Fn) key and press the key with the Bluetooth symbol on your laptop.

Disabling Wi-Fi can also help if you aren’t using it. For example, if you’re using your laptop on an airplane and not taking advantage of in-flight Wi-Fi, turn off your laptop’s Wi-Fi to save some power. Wi-Fi can be turned off in a similar way using the function keys on your laptop or even by disabling the Wi-Fi adapter in the Control Panel’s network connections window.

About Your Power Plan

Windows offers power plans that can quickly change your laptop’s power settings to different profiles. For example, you can have your computer in Balanced mode most of the time and switch to Power saver mode when you need every bit of power you can get. Each power plan’s settings can be modified individually. You’ll find power plans in the Control Panel’s Power Options window.

To modify advanced power options, click the Change plan settings link and select Change advanced power settings.

You can change a variety of settings here, including setting your laptop to power off its hard drive more quickly and telling your computer to slow down the processor rather than turning on the fan if it becomes hot. Both of these behaviors will save power. The default settings should be fairly optimal if you select Power saver mode, but you can make the settings even more aggressive in some areas.

Hibernate Instead of Sleep

When your laptop goes to sleep, it uses a small amount of power to power its RAM and keep its system state loaded in memory, allowing it to wake up and resume in just a few seconds. When your laptop hibernates, it saves its system state to disk and powers off, using almost no power.

If you’re not going to be using your laptop for a few hours, place it into hibernate mode rather than sleep mode to conserve even more battery power. Sleep mode doesn’t use a lot of battery power, but hibernate uses as much as having the computer powered off.

If you’ve had your laptop for a while and the battery is holding less power than it used to — but you’re not ready to upgrade to a new laptop just yet — you can try replacing your laptop’s battery with a new one for even longer battery life.

Use the Windows Power Troubleshooter

Windows 7 and 8 include a power troubleshooting tool that will scan your system for common battery drains and automatically fix them. To load this tool, open the Troubleshooting pane in the Control Panel — perform a search for Troubleshooting to find it.

Use low Screen Brightness

The biggest battery drain on any modern portable electronic device — whether it’s a laptop, smartphone, or tablet — is the display. Reducing your screen’s brightness is a simple way to squeeze significantly more time from your laptop’s battery.

On a typical laptop, you generally hold the Function (Fn) key and press the brightness buttons on your laptop keyboard. The lower the brightness level, the longer you can use your laptop on battery power.

Setup Your Display for Automatically Turn Off

If you step away from your laptop for a few minutes, its screen will still be on, draining power. You can set more aggressive display power settings to have the laptop dim and turn off the display when you’re not using it.

Open the Power Options dialog in the Control Panel and set your display to dim and turn off after a short period of time. You can move your mouse or press any key to turn the display right back on with no delay, so this is an easy way to save power — as long as the display doesn’t turn off while you’re using the laptop, this shouldn’t bother you too much. Step by Step Upgrading to Windows 8

If you are also planning to make the switch to Windows 8 this weekend, here are 3 things you would need:

A Windows machine running Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP. It doesn’t matter if you have computer is running Windows XP Premium or Windows 7 Home Basic.
A valid credit card or a PayPal account to pay the upgrade fee – you will be required to pay $39.99 for the Windows 8 Professional edition.
An internet connection for downloading the Windows 8 installer (2.05 GB). You may also order the Windows 8 installer on a DVD though it may not be necessary as it is quite easy to create your own Windows 8 DVD.

Please note that you are opting for an “upgrade” so it will overwrite your existing copy of Windows and there’s no way you can uninstall Windows 8 to switch to the previous Windows installation.

"ipconfig" Find Your IP Address

You can find your IP address from the Control Panel, but this takes quite a few clicks. The ipconfig command is a fast way of determining your computer’s IP address and other information, such as the address of its default gateway — useful if you want to know the IP address of your router’s web interface.

To use the command, just type ipconfig into a Command Prompt window. You’ll see a list of all the network connections your computer is using. Look under Wireless LAN adapter if you’re connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection if you’re connected to a wired network.

If you’re experiencing issues connecting to a website or other network connection issues, Windows and other operating systems have some standard tools you can use to identify problems.

First, there’s the ping command. Type ping google.com and Windows will send packets to Google.com. Google will respond and let you know it’s received them. You’ll be able to see if any packets didn’t make it to Google.com — perhaps you’re experiencing packet loss — and how long it took you to hear back — perhaps the network is saturated and packets are taking a while to reach their destinations.

There’s also the tracert command, which traces the route it takes for a packet to reach a destination. For example, run tracert google.com and you’ll see the path your packet takes to reach Google. If you’re having issues connecting to a website, tracert can show you where the problem is occurring.

"ipconfig /flushdns" Flush Your DNS Resolver Cache

If you change your DNS server, the effects won’t necessarily take place immediately. Windows uses a cache that remembers DNS responses it’s received, saving time when you access the same addresses again in the future.

To ensure Windows is getting addresses from the new DNS servers instead of using old, cached entries, run the ipconfig /flushdns command after changing your DNS server.

"netstat -an" List Network Connections and Ports

The netstat command is particularly useful, displaying all sorts of network statistics when used with its various options. One of the most interesting variants of netstat is netstat -an, which will display a list of all open network connections on their computer, along with the port they’re using and the foreign IP address they’re connected to.

This allows you to remove manufacturer-installed bloatware or add your favorite desktop programs to your recovery image.

"wbadmin start backup" Create System Recovery Images

Windows 8.1 removes the Windows 7 backup interface, which allowed you to create system backup images. These system images contain a complete snapshot of every single file on the system, so they’re different from Windows 8′s recovery images.

While the graphical interface has been removed, system administrators and geeks can still create system image backups by running the wbadmin start backup cmdlet in a PowerShell window. Unlike all the other commands here, this command-line tool must be run from within PowerShell, not the Command Prompt.

What is the backup? Everyone always tells you to make sure that you are backing up your PC, but what does that really mean? And what files do you actually need to backup? Today we’ll walk you through the basics of backing up your PC, what you should back up, and why? Of course, these rules won’t fit every scenario, so you’ll need to use a little common sense—think about what is most important to you on your PC, and make sure that you’ve figured out how to backup those files.

The primary principle of backing

The primary principle of backing up your data is that any important data should exist in two or more physical locations at once. You cannot create a backup and delete the original, or else it is no longer really a backup.

You might think this is obvious, but you’d be surprised how often I’ve been approached by readers that lost their data after their “backup” drive died.

A place for backup

Local Backups

It’s important to create local backups to an external drive or another PC for speed of restoring files should something bad happen, and also because this is going to be the quickest way to create backups.

We’ve also got guides to show you how to use Backup and Restore in Windows, GFI Backup, Macrium Reflect, and even Simple Backup in Linux—but the tool isn’t that important—what you are backing up is.

Online Backups

There are a number of paid online backup services like Mozy, Carbonite, Spideroak, and Jungledisk, and there are also some file sync services like Dropbox and SugarSync that provide backup type of capability. These are all excellent secondary backup services, but probably shouldn’t replace a regular backup just because they will take a long time to restore.

Note: if you’re looking for a great way to keep a folder in sync between PCs and accessible from anywhere, Dropbox rocks. We love it. Otherwise, you should probably check out Mozy, since it has a unique ability to create local backups as well as online backups.

System Image Backups

Rather than simply backing up files, you can create a complete backup of your system that can be restored over top of your system. The only problem with creating these type of backups is that they require a real lot of drive space. The best bet is to create an image when your system is up and running and everything is installed, and then you can use it to more easily restore everything rather than reinstalling everything manually.

The most important files

The most important files to backup are probably your documents, pictures, music, and other user files, but they are not the only files that you need to backup. Let’s walk through some of them.

Documents:

You should backup your entire documents folder all the time. This should be a no-brainer.
Music: If you’ve paid lots of money for MP3 downloads, you’ll probably be sad to lose them. Make sure to include this folder. Note: if you’re an iTunes user, you should make sure to backup your iTunes folder, which is thankfully usually inside this directory.

Pictures & Videos:

It’s really sad when I get emails from people saying their hard drive died and they lost all their pictures of their family. The photos might not have actually costed you anything, but you’ll probably be more sad about losing memories than paying for music downloads again.

Desktop Email:

If you’re using Outlook or Windows Live Mail, make absolutely certain that you’ve backed up the files from these applications. Outlook stores all your email in a .PST file,

Application Settings:

If you look within the AppData folders, you’ll see directories for each and every application you’re running. These settings can often be restored from a backup so you don’t have to tweak everything again. Just head into C:\Users\Username\AppData\ to see the Local, Roaming, and LocalLow folders that contain many settings for your applications.

Virtual Machines:

If you use virtual machines for real work, you should probably create a backup of your virtual machines at some point. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend backing these up every single night, but you should at least consider some type of backup plan.

Bookmarks:

Most browsers other than Internet Explorer actually make it difficult to backup your bookmarks using Windows Backup, but the much better option is to sync your bookmarks to the cloud. If you’d rather use local backup, you can simply backup the application settings folder and restore that—this works especially well for Firefox in our experience.

There’s simply no reason to backup these directories

There’s almost never a reason to backup your Windows directory, as you’re going to have to reinstall the whole thing anyway, so this backup will likely do you no good.

Program Files:

You’re going to have to reinstall your applications if your computer dies and you have to reinstall. Why bother backing up all these files?
It’s worth noting that if you create a system image backup, you won’t have to reinstall all of your applications, and backing up these folders would still be pointless.

How to use windows logon auditing

Do you want to monitor who’s logging into your computer and when? On Professional editions of Windows, you can enable logon auditing to have Windows track which user accounts log in and when. The Audit logon events setting tracks both local logins and network logins. Each logon event specifies the user account that logged on and the time the login took place. You can also see when users logged off.

How to Enable Logon Auditing

First, open the local group policy editor – press the Windows key, type gpedit.msc in the Start menu, and press Enter. (You can also enable logon event auditing on a domain controller if you administer a network with centralized logins.)

Go to the following folder: Local Computer Policy –> Computer Configuration –> Windows Settings –> Security Settings –> Local Policies –> Audit Policy.

Double-click the Audit logon events policy setting in the right pane to adjust its options. In the properties window, enable the Success checkbox to log successful logons. You can also enable the Failure checkbox to log failed logins.

Let's View Logon Events

After enabling this setting, Windows will log logon events – including a username and time – to the system security log.

To view these events, open the Event Viewer – press the Windows key, type Event Viewer, and press Enter to open it.

Navigate to the Windows Logs –> Security category in the event viewer.Look for events with event ID 4624 – these represent successful login events.

To see more information – such as the user account that logged into the computer – you can double-click the event and scroll down in the text box. (You can also scroll down in the text box underneath the list of events.)

In many ways, content upon the internet is beautifully linked together and accessible, but despite the interconnectivity of it all we still frequently locate ourselves visiting this site, then that site, then another site, all in an effort to check for updates and acquire the content we want. That's not particular efficient and there's a much better way to go about it.

Historically, web sites mimicked analog mailing lists in order to deliver content. Material from the site gets packed up in a daily, weekly, or monthly digest, and fired off via email. For some content and perhaps for your particular reading style, email digests may be a perfect fit and theyre still in use by many web sitesif youre interested in getting daily email updated from Cyber Gist, for example, you can subscribe to the daily email here. If you desire to profit content as it is created and shared and in a format more flexible than an email digest, however, youll need RSS.

In 1999 very early implementation of RSS came along and shook up how content was delivered to site subscribers. Originally called RDF Site Summary (later renamed to Rich Site Summary and then Real Simple Syndication), the first incarnation of RSS was the product of Netscape developers Dan Libby and Ramanathan V. Guha to serve as a content delivery system for the My.Netscape portal.

RSS allows web sites to shove out content in a standardized format commonly called a feed. This feed can be subscribed to by anyone with internet access and an appropriate tool called a feed reader. Accessing these RSS feeds is free and many popular and robust feed readers (which well chat about more in a moment) are also free.

To highlight the benefit of RSS, lets look at the three ways you could interact with Cyber Gist.

You could visit the web site in a traditional manner. To gain new content, videos, tutorials, and other material from Cyber Gist, you open your browser and visit Cyber Gists main page. That's the way most people interact with most of the internet, by manually visiting web sites.

You could automate the process by subscribing to our email digest. Once a day you had gain an email from us with some summit stories and other content mixed in. Millions of people use email digests to get updates from web sites. Its not a bad solution and one that many people are comfortable with, but its not immediate or flexible.

Finally, you could subscribe to the main Cyber Gist RSS feed or one of the sub-feeds and the content would be delivered automatically and instantly, along with the content from any other web sites you have subscribed to, in your feed reader.

The last option really shines when youre also subscribing to multiple other sites. After the windows 8, Microsoft released a preview of their update to Windows 8 Its named windows 8.1

Important Info about windows 8.1

Before we give you the download link, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind:

Windows 8.1 will be a Free update to Windows 8.
Windows 8.1 will be offered through the Windows App Store today, though you’ll need a small update to trigger it.
Tomorrow, there will be an ISO image download of Windows 8.1. MSDN and Technet subscribers can already download the ISO release.
Important: Once you upgrade to the 8.1 Preview, you can’t upgrade from that to the final release later this year.
Update: some PCs won’t run the 8.1 update, and the 64-bit version doesn’t work in a VirtualBox virtual machine from what we can tell.
First, you’ll need to head to this URL and download a small application to trigger the update. Open and install that update first. You will be asked to reboot at the end.

New items in Windows 8.1

Lets face it Windows 8 was not very well-liked, and while there were a ton of really great enhancements and speed boosts under the hood, the paint job made people very upset. The new Metro begin screen was not only forced on everybody, but you could barely customize it, so it wasnt like you were going to learn to love it. Plus they renamed it from Metro to Modern, which left everybody even more confused.

The biggest complaints were the removal of the begin button, the begin menu, and the fact that you could no longer boot to the desktop. Everything else was really unimportant. So what are the biggest new features?

Search is Unified: the search engine on Windows 8 was just terrible, splitting different searches into different sections that made no sense. Now its unified into a single search engine as it was in Windows 7.

Better Start Screen Personalization

the experience is much improved this time around. You can customize the tile size a lot more, use background pictures, Modern apps can be snapped to occupy half the screen, multiple monitors are supported much better, and a lot of other improvements.

How to charge USB devices as quickly

USB charging is shrouded in mystery — which is a bit ironic, given that almost all of us rely on USB charging of our smartphones and tablets on a daily basis. Why, for example, does an iPhone recharge quickly when you plug it into your MacBook Pro, but slowly when you plug it into your PC, or a non-Apple wall charger? Why does your smartphone charge quickly to start with, but slow down as it fills up? In this story we will answer these questions and more as we investigate the optimum methods of charging your USB devices as quickly as possible. We will also be taking a look at a new device, called the Practical Meter, which finally gives us insight into the arcane world of USB charging.

USB charging working method

To begin with, you should read our story on how USB charging works, which outlines USB 1, 2, and 3′s specifications for charging, why some sockets and wall chargers output more power than others, and whether it’s possible to blow up your device by using a different charger (it isn’t). What that story doesn’t cover, though, is the variation between devices — why iPhones charge differently from Androids — and why two seemingly identical USB 2.0 (or 3.0) ports charge your devices differently.

Why smartphone charges slowly

In general, there are two key factors that affect how quickly your device charges over USB: The maximum amperage of the USB socket or wall charger, and how your device negotiates power delivery from the socket/charger.

For a start, every charger or socket has a max amperage — usually between 500 milliamps (mA) and 1.5 amps (A). In general, unless it says otherwise, your laptop and PC are probably outfitted with 500mA sockets (unless they’re USB 3.0, in which case they’re probably 900mA). The max amperage of a wall charger varies, but can usually be found written somewhere on the charger — generally it’ll be between 0.5A and 2.1A. The max amperage dictates one thing only: The max theoretical charging rate of your device.

It is through negotiation that your device actually decides how much power it wants to draw. When you plug your device into a charging socket or wall charger, the USB controller in your device talks to the USB controller attached to the socket/wall charger — or, if no controller is available, the device reads the voltage flowing across the four USB pins. From this data, your device decides how much amperage to draw, and thus how quickly it will recharge.

The question is, how does your device decide how much power to draw?

Unfortunately for us, this is a complex area that is full of proprietary information that can only be ascertained experimentally. In short, there is a USB power charging spec that many devices stick to, but there are also definite differences between classes of devices, such as iOS and Android. Your iPhone, for example, will only recharge at its max speed if the right driver is in place for power negotiation — otherwise it will fall back to slow charging. Likewise, it can be quite hard to coax an Android device to charge quickly from a laptop or PC that also wants to initiate a data connection (which reduces the max draw over the power lines).

Another factor is that most devices, if they’re equipped with a lithium-ion battery, reduce their power draw as the battery reaches capacity, to preserve the longevity of the battery.

In short, getting your smartphone or tablet to charge quickly is something of an arcane art. If you have an iPhone or iPad, be sure to charge it with your Apple PC or use the Apple-provided wall wart. If you have an Android device, be sure to install any manufacturer-provided drivers and use the manufacturer-provided wall charger (or the official “fast charger,” if there is one).

The other, intriguing option is to use the Practical Meter, a small (Kickstarter) dongle that shows you how much power your USB device is drawing — and thus how quickly it will recharge. Plug the Practical Meter into a USB socket or AC adapter, plug your USB device into the meter, and marvel as the LEDs light up. Each LED equates to one watt, with five watts being the maximum that most that smartphones will take.

The first thing you’ll notice with the Practical Meter is that almost every USB socket on your desktop or laptop will only give you two or three bars — which equates to 500 mA, the bottom end of the USB charging spec, and a very long charge indeed. Five bars is equal to 1A (5 watts @ 5 volts), which you can draw from a dedicated USB charging port on your PC (but these are rarely labeled) or with the right drivers. Generally, though, to get the fastest charge, you will need a wall charger or third-party connectors that trick your USB device into drawing the full five watts. Fortunately the Practical Meter also comes with those third-party connectors.

The short answer,for $20

The short answer, then, if you want to charge your smartphone or tablet as quickly as possible, is to get a Practical Meter and some third-party connectors — for $20. Plus, once you have a Practical Meter, you can use it for all sorts of other cool purposes, such as measuring the power draw of your USB keyboard, or how productive your solar panels are.

You’ve probably heard that firewalls are an important security protection, but do you know why that is? Many people don’t, if references to firewalls in TV shows, movies, and other forms of popular media are any indication.

A firewall sits between a computer (or local network) and another network (such as the Internet), controlling the incoming and outgoing network traffic. Without a firewall, anything goes. With a firewall, the firewall’s rules determine which traffic is allowed through and which isn’t.

Why Firewalls For Computers

Most people now use routers at home so they can share their Internet connection between multiple devices. However, there was a time when many people plugged their computer’s Ethernet cable directly into their cable or DSL modem, connecting the computer directly to the Internet. A computer connected directly to the Internet has a publicly addressable IP – in other words, anyone on the Internet can reach it. Any network services you have running on your computer – like the services that come with Windows for file and printer sharing, remote desktop, and other features – would be accessible to other computers on the Internet.

The original release of Windows XP didn’t contain a firewall. The combination of having services designed for local networks, no firewall, and computers connected directly to the Internet led to many Windows XP computers becoming infected within minutes of being connected directly to the Internet.

The Windows Firewall was introduced in Windows XP Service Pack 2, and it finally enabled a firewall by default in Windows. Those network services were isolated from the Internet. Rather than accepting all incoming connections, a firewalled system drops all incoming connections unless it’s specifically configured to allow these incoming connections.

This prevents people on the Internet from connecting to local network services on your computer. It also controls access to network services from other computers on your local network. That’s why you’re asked what type of network it is when you connect to one in Windows. If you connect to a Home network, the firewall will allow access to these services. If you connect to a Public network, the firewall will deny access

Even if a network service itself is configured not to allow connections from the Internet, it’s possible that the service itself has a security flaw and a specially crafted request could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code on your computer. A firewall prevents this by getting in the way, preventing incoming connections from even reaching these potentially vulnerable services.

Firewall Functions

Firewalls sit between a network (such as the Internet) and the computer (or local network) the firewall is protecting. A firewall’s main security purpose for home users is blocking unsolicited incoming network traffic, but firewalls can do much more than that. Because a firewall is sitting between these two networks, it can analyze all traffic reaching or leaving the network and decide what to do with it. For example, a firewall could also be configured to block certain types of outgoing traffic or it could log suspicious traffic (or all traffic).

A firewall could have a variety of rules that allow and deny certain types of traffic. For example, it could only allow connections to a server from a specific IP address, dropping all connection requests from elsewhere for security.

Firewalls can be anything from a piece of software running on your laptop (like the firewall included with Windows) to dedicated hardware in a corporate network. Such corporate firewalls could analyze outgoing traffic to ensure no malware was communicating through the network, monitor employee’s network use, and filter traffic — for example, a firewall could be configured to only allow web browsing traffic through the firewall, blocking access to other types of applications.

PowerShell and the Command Prompt

You may have noticed a new command-line environment in Windows since Windows 7 — PowerShell.
PowerShell is a much more powerful command-line shell and scripting language than the Command Prompt is, giving Windows system administrators a useful command-line environment.

PowerShell is more complicated than the traditional Command Prompt, but it’s also much more powerful. The Command Prompt was dramatically inferior to shells available for Linux and other Unix-like systems, but PowerShell competes favorably with the shells available for other platforms.

PowerShell and the Command Prompt

PowerShell is actually very different from the Command Prompt. It uses different commands, known as cmdlets in PowerShell. Many system administration tasks — from managing the registry to WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) — are exposed via PowerShell cmdlets, while they aren’t accessible from the Command Prompt.

PowerShell makes use of pipes, just as Linux and other Unix-like systems do. Pipes allow you to pass the output of one cmdlet to the input of another cmdlet, using multiple cmdlets in sequence to manipulate the same data. Unlike Unix-like systems, which can only pipe streams of characters (text), PowerShell pipes objects between cmdlets. This allows PowerShell to share more complex data between cmdlets.

PowerShell isn’t just a shell you use. It’s a powerful scripting environment that can be used to create complex scripts for managing Windows systems much more easily than you could with the Command Prompt.

The Command Prompt is essentially just a legacy environment carried forward in Windows — an environment that copies all of the various DOS commands you would find on a DOS system. It is painfully limited, can’t access many Windows system administration features, is more difficult to compose complex scripts with, and so on. PowerShell is a new environment for Windows system administrators that allows them to use a more modern command-line environment to manage Windows.

When You Want to Use PowerShell?

So you’re an average Windows user — when would you want to use PowerShell? Well, if you rarely use the Command Prompt and fire it up to run the occasional ping or ipconfig command, you’ll probably never need to touch PowerShell

However, PowerShell can be a much more powerful command-line environment than the Windows command prompt. For example, we’ve shown you how to use the PowerShell environment built into Windows to perform a search-and-replace operation to batch rename multiple files in a folder — something that would normally require installing a third-party program. This is the sort of thing that Linux users were once able to do with their command-line environment, while Windows users were left out.

However, PowerShell isn’t like the Linux terminal — it’s a bit more complicated, and the average Windows user won’t see many benefits from playing with it.

System administrators will want to learn PowerShell so they can manage their systems more efficiently. If you need to write a script to automate various system administration tasks, you should do it with PowerShell.

PowerShell Equivalents of Common Commands
Many common Command Prompt commands — from ipconfig to cd — will work in the PowerShell environment. This is because PowerShell contains “aliases” that point these old commands at the appropriate new cmdlets, running the new cmdlets when you type the old commands.

We’ll go over a few common Command Prompt commands and their equivalents in PowerShell anyway — just to give you an idea of how PowerShell’s syntax is different.
