Blogger Custom Sub-Domain Setup Using CPANEL

Google Blogger is great. It's easy to use, easy to modify templates and is completely free. The coolest feature through is the ability to use a custom domain name (either www.example.com, or www.subdomain.example.com) as your blog address.

This guide assumes you want your blog to be accessible from your own sub-domain (http://yoursubdomain.yourdomainname.com) and want to use CPANEL to do it.

Log in to your website's CPANEL (typically www.example.com/cpanel)
Open the Simple DNS zone editor under the "domains" panel

Choose the domain you'd like to use for your blogger subdomain if you own multiple ones
Add the following CNAME records:

Name: yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com.
CNAME: ghs.google.com

Name: www.yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com.
CNAME: ghs.google.com

You need to add both records to ensure your blog address is reachable using both url prefixes (http & www). Example: if you create only one CNAME record : "yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com." your blog will be reachable at http://yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com but unreachable at http://www.yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com. That's bad.... So add both.

Next Step : Configure Blogger's domain settings

Login to your blogger account. Go to "settings" -> "publishing". There will be an option to switch you to a custom domain. Click that link and you'll be presented with a field to input your custom domain name.

Since you're using a subdomain CNAME record, that's what you'll be using for your custom domain name. Use "yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com" as your custom domain name. Save your settings.

That's it. It may take 24 hours to 72 hours for your DNS settings to propagate so keep that in mind if things aren't working right away. Usually it takes less than this (sometimes minutes). In my particular case, one CNAME setting worked instantly, the other took over 4 hours to propogate for some reason.

Just remember that DNS propagation is out of your control, so don't panic if it doesn't work.

Trouble-shooting:

CNAME records end with "." <-- that's not a punctuation element up there :)
If your CPANEL doesn't have a DNS zone editor, contact your webhost's support department. A decent webhost will be using an updated version of CPANEL and should be avail. upon request. If they absolutely will not enable it - then have them update your CNAME record manually. I recommend hostgator's services : their technical support is knowledgable, proffessional and available 24 hours a day. All my blog's CNAME entries are editable through hostgators CPANEL interface.

This tutorial is for all those who are already using Custom Domains with Blogger. If you already have a blogger blog at some Custom domain like www.yourdomain.com , then you might want to add a sub domains to this custom domain like blog.yourdomain.com gallery.yourdomain.com etc. An example of such a sub-domain is bloggertemplates.bloggerplugins.org It is a blogger powered blog, which i created on the sub-domain. In order to create blogs at sub-domains, you need to create CNAME records for the same.

Create Sub Domain on a Blogger Custom Domain

Here we will learn how we can add a new sub domain to your blogger custom domain blog. As an example we will learn how to create a sub domain blog.yourdomain.com to your custom domain blog. (If you have need some other sub-domain change blog with what you want). To do that we need to create a CNAME record.

1. blog.yourdomain.com pointing to ghs.google.com

If you are having a self hosted website, then you will have to create this CNAME Record with your Web Host.You might be able to do it from the “Simple DNS Zone Editor” in most cPanels. If you don’t have such an option, contact your Web Host and ask them to create these two CNAME records for you.After creating this record with your webhost(and after it has propagated), publish your BlogSpot blog to that sub domain(Skip the tutorials for CNAME Creation on Different domain Registrars. They are not applicable for Self hosted Websites)

If you don’t have a self hosted website,then to create the CNAME you need to login to your domain control panel. Different Registrars have different interfaces(we have listed 4 of them here) but the basic thing is that you need to create the CNAME Record. If you bought the domain via blogger, then you have to first login to Google APPS to get into your Domain Control panel

If you bought the domain from Blogger

If you bought the domain from within Blogger, then you have to get into your domain control panel. To do that go to

http://google.com/a/cpanel/yourdomain.com

you will have to replace yourdomain.com with your domain name. From the Google APPS dashboard, Go to Domain Settings > Domain Names and click on Advanced DNS Settings. From the new page, Sign in to DNS Console(of Enom or Godaddy with the username and password that you get from here.)

CNAME Creation on Different Registrars

1. Creating CNAME on Enom

1.Login to your Enom account(If you signed in from Google APPS, you can directly proceed to sep 4)

2.From the drop-down menu at the Domains tab, select My Domain and you will be directed to the Manage Domains page.

3.Click on your domain name

4.To add a CNAME record, click NEW ROW.

5.Enter blog as Host Name , ghs.google.com as Address and CNAME as Record Type

2. Creating CNAME on Godaddy

Godaddy has come up with a simple Tool which will automatically create the CNAME records for you. So if you are on Godaddy just Go to this Go Daddy tool

Enter your Subdomain name there e.g. : blog.yourdomain.com

(Use the correct sub-domain where you want your blog to appear) and click on the Confirm Button. The CNAME Records have been created for you automatically.

3. Creating CNAME on Name.com

The Complete Guide to Setting Up the New Facebook Page Design

Our social media team had a nice little surprise upon logging into Facebook this morning. We hinted at it last month, but it looks like the day has already come. The new Facebook business page design, which is virtually the same as Timeline, is now available for all businesses to implement on Facebook pages!

Facebook is giving page administrators the chance to preview, tweak, and publish their new design immediately, but the new design won't be forced on you until March 30, 2012. In other words, you have until March 30 to play around with the new design without publishing before it must go live. Here's what you need to know to make the most out of the new design and all the features it has to offer.

How to Set Up Your New Facebook Page Design

Upon logging in and accessing your Facebook business page as an administrator, you'll be presented with the following message:

Start Tour: Click the green 'Start Tour' button to get started.

Step 1A: Set Your Cover Photo

In the 'About' section of the tour, you'll first be prompted to choose what's called a cover photo for your page. If you're familiar with Timeline for personal profiles, this is similar to the large banner image that is shown at the top of the page. For pages, the cover photo dimensions are 851 x 315 pixels. Choose an image that is representative of your brand, and don't be afraid to get creative with it (here are some great examples from Social Fresh to spark some creativity). You can change it as often as you wish, but you should also adhere to Facebook's policies regarding cover photos, which states that cover photos cannot include:

Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website.”
Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
Calls-to-action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”
Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.

No calls-to-action? A little bit strict, Facebook ... don't you think?

Step 1B: Set Your Profile Picture

Once you click 'Next,' Facebook will prompt you to adjust your profile picture, which is the image that will get shown next to each of your updates on your wall and in users' news feeds; it will also appear with any sponsored stories or ads that you run. A logo is a good choice here, but you can choose any image that is representative of your brand. Choose an image that fits 180 x 180 pixels and also looks good when scaled down to a thumbnail size of 32 x 32 pixels.

Step 2: Organize Your Views & Apps

The new design features photos, likes, and apps at the top of your page below your cover photo. Photos are automatically featured in the first spot, but page admins can rearrange the rest to feature the most important ones first. Overall, a total of 12 apps can be shown here, which can be viewed when page visitors click the dropdown arrow (highlighted in orange in the image below). Admins can also customize the images that get shown for each app in this toolbar using the 'Manage' >> 'Edit Page' dropdown via the 'Admin Panel,' which is accessible at the top right of their business page.

Step 3: Star, Hide, or Pin

In step 3 of the tour, Facebook will prompt you to modify the items in your page's timeline. By hovering over individual stories, you can make them wider, hide them from your timeline with the pencil icon, highlight them as important with the star icon, or delete them entirely. A great new feature to note here is that you can pin/anchor a specific story to the top of your timeline for up to 7 days. This means you can highlight specific posts such as remarkable content, calls-to-action for your best marketing offers, or other events/promotions you want to feature. Pinning it to the top of your page will prevent it from getting buried by more recent updates. Perhaps Facebook is offering this functionality in an attempt to make up for its strict cover photo guidelines.

Step 4: Explore the Admin Panel

The new Admin Panel which, as we mentioned earlier, page admins can access from the link at the top right of their business page, allows admins to track all of the activity on their page in one convenient place. From here, admins can easily respond to comments, edit their page settings, access Page Insights (i.e. Facebook page analytics), create new ads, and even change the name of their page.

Step 5: Enable Messages

The Facebook guided tour ends with information about messages, a brand new feature for business pages. Admins can now allow users to send them personal messages. This makes it much easier for admins to have private conversations with their fans. Use this feature when you need to discuss a topic or customer service issue in more depth, and when you'd prefer the conversation not be made public for all page visitors to see. We don't recommend limiting methods of communication available to your fans, but admins can also choose to turn off messaging capability by accessing the Admin Panel, choosing 'Manage' >> 'Edit Page' >> 'Manage Permissions,' and unchecking the 'Messages' box.

Additional Features

In addition to the new features we've covered in the tour above, there are several other features available in the new page design that you should also know about.

About: Although the 'About' section of your Facebook page isn't exactly a 'new' feature available with these updates, it's still worth mentioning due to the prominent placement it gets in the new design (see below). This section gives you the opportunity to briefly explain your business and let new visitors quickly understand what your business is about. Keep it brief so the description doesn't get cut off, and include a URL to your business' website.

Friend Activity: When people visit your new business page, they will now have a more personalized experience because they'll see how their personal Facebook friends have interacted with your page. In other words, if a user tags your business page in one of their posts or checks in at your business' location, the people they originally shared with (i.e. their Facebook friends) will see these stories highlighted for them on your business page's timeline if they visit it. You can learn more about your page's visibility settings here and what people can see here. In a nutshell, this means that your page will now include more elements of social proof; if a visitor to your page sees that he/she has friends who have interacted with your page, they might be more enticed to stick around and become a fan themselves.

As you can see from the screenshot below, the new design shows me how many friends of mine are fans of the UnsaidScript page. I can also see a post one of my friends made about the Unsaidscript page.

Milestones: The new design also allows admins to feature what are called "Milestones" on their page. This allows page admins to highlight some of their business' biggest accomplishments, such as fan growth, award wins, product releases, etc. Milestone images are set at 843 x 403 pixels. You create a new (or past) milestone via the status update box, which will prompt you to input the following information about your milestone.

When complete, it will look something like this on your timeline:

Activity Log: Your activity log allows you to view, manage, and organize all the posts on your page (even the ones you chose to hide from your timeline). With this page, you can filter stories by date or story type (see "All"), view spam vs. photos vs. comments vs. posts by others, and the list goes on. From this view, you can also hide, delete, or star (highlight) individual stories, as well as change dates of stories on your timeline. To access the activity log for a page, page admins should visit their Admin Panel and click 'Manage' >> 'Use Activity Log.'

Best Practices For the New Page Design

In addition to the tried and true Facebook marketing best practices you're likely already used to, here are a few additional ones to add to your list, brought to you by the brand new page design.

1) Publish More Visual Content

Facebook's new timeline page design places more of an emphasis on visual content like images and videos, so use that to your advantage. According to an internal Facebook study, "posts including a photo album or picture can generate 2X more engagement than other post types." Because these images will now appear larger and more prominently on your page, make it a point of posting your best visual content to your Facebook page, or make more of an effort to make the content you already create more visual. Think photos, charts, infographics, and other content visualizations. And hey -- you can always use it on other visual-oriented social networks like Pinterest and Google+, too!

2) Feature Custom Tabs in Views & Apps Toolbar for Lead Gen

Unfortunately, with the new timeline design for pages, Facebook no longer allows you to set a default landing tab for your business page. All new page visitors will automatically be directed to your timeline. This means that for those of you using the Facebook Welcome App, you can no longer make it so that new visitors see that tab upon visiting your page for the first time. That being said, you can feature the app (or other custom apps/tabs) in the Views & Apps toolbar below your cover photo. As we mentioned in step 2 of our setup steps above, be sure to rearrange your Views & Apps icons to show your top tabs to highlight tabs you're using for lead generation.

3) Edit Images That Appear in Your Views & Apps Bar

To build off our last best practice, you'll also want to make sure you choose the best images possible to represent the items in your Views & Apps toolbar. To customize the way these apps appear on your page, visit the Admin Panel, click 'Manage,' and choose 'Edit Page' from the dropdown menu. In the 'Apps' section, click 'Edit Settings' for the specific app image. Then you can upload the new image you'd like to use to feature that app (dimensions should be 111 x 74 pixels). This will enable you to turn your featured apps into compelling calls-to-action, as Unsaid-Script did in the image example above to highlight its Unsaid-Script Welcome App tab. Use these to call attention to your premium content to support Facebook lead generation.

4) Make Sure Your Best Posts Appear on Your Timeline

Make sure to expose visitors of your page to your most important content. To do so, make your default setting 'Allowed on Timeline' by checking 'Everyone can post to Unsaid-Script 's timeline' in the 'Manage Permissions' section of your page settings. To highlight posts you want to give prominent placement on your timeline (they'll take up the full width of your timeline), access your Activity Log and select 'Highlight on Timeline' to star particular posts.

5) Pin New Featured Promotions Every 7 Days

As we mentioned in setup step 3, admins are now able to pin content to the tops of their pages for 7 days at a time. Use this to anchor updates about the promotions you want to feature (e.g. events, new marketing offers, other awesome content, etc.) to the top of your page to make them as visible to page visitors as possible. Pinned stories will appear right below the status update compose box. Update your anchor pin every 7 days once the old one expires. To pin an update, hover over a story, click on the pencil icon in the top right corner, and choose 'Pin to Top.'

The bigger question, then, is who’s next?

It’s clear that the US Federal Government is ramping up its fight against illegal file sharing and hosting. It’s the new war on drugs. The plan is to have taxpayers foot the bill and then attack websites rather than regulating or encouraging innovation. The only thing missing is a C.A.R.E. (Computer Abuse Reinforcement Education) presentation at your kids’ grade school. Just say no to perfectly legal data sinks, everyone.

MegaUpload was a massive digital locker service. It was so large that the site accounted for 4% of the Internet’s total traffic. The site boasted 50 million daily users and 180 million registered users. Was much of that content pirated? Sure, but MegaUpload held the files the way a pawn shop holds a car stereo. Unless there’s explicit illegal intent expressed by the customer to the holder, it’s hard to figure out who is at fault. Plus there was plenty of legitimate data there. But it’s all gone now.

As pointed out in a Justice Department press release, MegaUpload’s downfall was that they seemingly promoted the sharing of copy-written material. The Feds also stated that MegaUpload utilized third-party sites to publicize the “infringing content” and “manipulated the perception of content” by omitting infringing content from the top content lists. Or, in other words, MegaUpload was actively hiding the fact its users shared illegal content — at least that’s what the Feds say.

This isn’t completely about piracy, though. The Justice Department asserts that the seven individuals and two corporations, Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited, were involved in other criminal activities. They were charged with engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement. All they needed was drug trafficking and human slavery to make them the villans of the “You wouldn’t steal a car” anti-piracy commercials. The charges are serious even without the copyright nonsense thrown in. The defendants will face serious jail time if convicted of even a few of the charges.

The case of TVShack and Richard O’Dwyer is slightly different. The 23-year owner didn’t have life-size giraffe statues on his rolling New Zealand estate. First thing you need to do is find the keywords you want to optimize for.

There is great tool by Overture

But I would suggest using this free tool called GoodKeywords

This one does the same job as Overture does but it also supports other Search Engines (Lycos and Teoma etc..)

For example if you want to optimize for the keyword "tech news", just search for the keyword in any of the tools specified above... It would show you keywords related to that and not of the searches..

Pick the keywords which are related to your site.

For example when you search for "Tech News" you'll see the following results:

First make a website (webs.com is free, GABO is free for one year with a DOMAIN, weebly.com is free. After that I would recommend Intuit a.k.a. Homestead, but stay away from their Design Services!).

Second, make pages for that website. Each page you make, be sure to call the page title something like the following: (bare with me here, play along) customer Joe Bob is a Contractor who does Tile work in the Denver area. His Business name is "Tile Guy of Denver".
The index page (Home page) should be called exactly this "Tile Guy of Denver, Tile work CO, Tile Contractor CO, 80112, 80111"
Repeat the process for any other pages you make (for the page titles) but make them Unique to the individual page the titles will represent. Do not use more than 5 strong key phrases through out these page titles.

Third, Sign up for a Google account (go to www.google.com, click in the top right corner). After making an account you will see MANY cool things you can do. The two I want to focus on are Google places and Google adwords (no we are not doing adwords, you'll see).
Google places, enter in your business name and address. Google will send you a postcard in the mail with a pin # that you will enter in to confirm the listing. This gets you onto Google maps with a pin showing your location.
Google adwords, sign up for google adwords. When it asks for your billing info, how much you plan to spend etc...ignore it and just continue along. You will get to a point at which you have a green bar along the top of the page. This is your navigation menu for the Google Adwords home page. Click on the page (button) on the top there that says "Reporting and Tools". Chose "keyword tool" from the list. Use this to analyze the best key words to use for the remainder of your website. Chose key words (key phrases) with the most hits per month and the lowest competition, if possible. Don't chose more than 15 good key phrases, and then get 3 out of those to keep as your "all stars".

Fourth, make content for your webpage. You want 300 words on your home page, a little more wont hurt. You want 200 to 250 on each additional page. You want to make these sentences, paragraphs, in a structure just as if you were talking to someone in person or over the phone. NOT as though you were trying to fill the paragraphs with key words or as if lecturing someone. BUT try to make the content "key word rich" at the same time. There is a perfect balance you are trying to achieve.

Fifth, Upload pictures to your page/s. Name them something that describes the pictures short and sweet, but also has key words built right in the name of each picture title! Don't have anything over 200kb if possible. Make alt tags for each picture that is again a key word of yours, but ties into the picture in some form, if possible.

Sixth, descriptions and meta-tags. Now that you have some content, give a one or two sentence description of each page. Id your using a CMS and don't see a place for this, then add it in (for each page) using the following HTML:
<meta name="description" content="This is my site I love what I do and I am the best at it. La la la, la la doo doo dee da." />
The do the same thing for key words:
<meta name="keywords" content="stuff goes in here, separated by commas, like this, key word la la la, another key word lala, no more than 15" />
NOTE THESE WILL NOT BE PICKED UP BY GOOGLE. Why do them? Because Yahoo and, cough cough, BING, will still track them in their algorithms.

Seventh, the old SEO Wheel. Make each page you created for your site, link to another page. Do not do it in a way that is easily traceable. For instance, Home page has a link that goes to About us which points to Contact page which points back to the home page. This is an SEO wheel and its not the right way to do it. Unless you are reading this from the past and the year is 1999. All you need to do is have links pointing to other pages all over the place, but keep them within the same website (more or less).

Eight, make it nice. Whatever navigation menu you used, keep it the same for all pages and in the same place. Do this for your header and footer as well. Then, make a copyright or other part of the footer that has your address, business name, number and maybe a good key word or two, and again use it on every page and in the same spot (bottom and center, or whatever you use, etc...)

Nine, Don't make it slow. You can control what content you put on the page, and this tells the browser (IE (hope not) G Chrome, FF, Safari and O) what to load and display on the page from the domain entered in the address bar. So make it nice and FAST. Google like's fast and will rank your site higher for being such. Don't use large images and don't have to many of them on one page. If you want music to play on your site, DON'T. And if you want videos, then host them somewhere else like You tube, and then link to them. You can do the same thing for large images using places like www.PhotoBucket.com

Ten, sitemap. Once the site is this far, or DONE (a website is never done), go back to your google account and make whats called a site map. Its actually very simple but I will let you google or read another short blog on how to do it if you don't know how. Google = "Make Google Site Map".

Elleven, backlinks, this is one of the most important things to do! Go out to the internet and find related sites to yours, or your industry and local. Find sits that are PR1, 2 OR 3; Meaning they have page ranks on Google or Yahoo of first, second or third page for a strong key word. Email them and ask that you can have a link on their site. Good luck. Otherwise, out of this hand full of sites, find ones that will let you post on them or leave a comment (like on a Blog) where as you can leave a link to your website. The name that you use in these forums or blogs that you find, should also be a key word or the name of your website. If you do do the keywords, only use 3 and do them in an order hard to be detected by SEA, Search Engine Algorithms. Meaning, use one key word 60% of the time, another one 30% and another one 10% (or close to that). If your comments field lets you leave a link in HTML, use this:
<a href="http://www.yourwebsitehere.com">your key word or site name here</a>

Twelve, make as many free accounts as possible. You want to make an article or description of your website, business and what you know about the industry (don't just explain your website) and you want to have a link, again a backlink, left there that points back to your website.

Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh passes away; PM, Soni condole legend’s death

NEW DELHI: Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, 70, passed away at 8.10 am in Lilavati Hospital on Monday morning.

Jagjit Singh was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital on September 23 after he suffered brain haemorrhage in suburban Bandra where a life-saving surgery was performed on him.

"Jagjit Singh passed away at 8.10 am after having a terrible haemorrhage," Dr Sudhir Nandgaonkar, hospital spokesperson, told PTI.

He is survived by his wife Chitra Singh.

Jagjit Singh was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He had four sisters and two brothers and he is known as Jeet by his family.

Popularly known as "The Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife in the 1970s and 1980s, as the first ever successful duo act (husband-wife) in the history of recorded Indian music.

Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, he has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali.

His popular ghazals include, Meri zindagi kisi aur ki, mere naam ka koi aur hai, Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain, Wo jo hum mein tumme qaraar tha, Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai, Hoshwalo ko khabar, etc.
