Today there is seldom a need to open a terminal in a linux system to carry out your day-to-day tasks. And i feel it is good, as many new linux may get scared off, if you need to use the terminal for simple daily tasks, but as any moderate linux user will tell you, it is very useful to have some basic terminal skills. There are hundreds of occasions when you need to check some information about the hardware or software installed on your computer. On windows this can be easily done by typing "dxdiag" in run. On ubuntu you can get this information using "sysinfo" but it it is very limited. To get detailed information about all the components installed on your computer and getting other software related information you can use hardinfo.

hardinfo provides the user with detailed information of the user's computer. Currently it shows information of PCI, ISA PnP, USB, IDE, SCSI, Serial and parallel port devices. It also carry outs benchmark test for your CPU. It can also generate reports in html and plain text for later reference.

To get and install hardinfo, open your terminal (Alt + Ctrl + T) and type "sudo apt-get install hardinfo"
or just go to the "Ubuntu software center" and search for "System Profiler and Benchmark".

If you are a lazy web surfer like me, you will surely know how useful on-screen keyboards are when you are sitting or reclining in unusual positions. Now-a-days i don't view that much of television due to the Internet, as most of the channels can be easily streamed online. Most of the daily shows can be viewed on YouTube without ads and other unnecessary distractions. I am a book fanatic and a inspiring writer. My cravings of reading were mostly satisfied by the local library but it was very limited. As a budding writer i was very much interested in the modern literature but i was unable to buy new books without financial support. The area i live in is a bit isolated with very scarce population so we don't have things like book clubs or literature communities etc these made me feel very isolated and far from the literature culture. Whenever i read a good book i wanted to discuss it with somebody or debate it. While browsing the Intel appup center i came across the wattpad app. In the description it called itself the YouTube of ebooks. This instantly caught my attention. I quickly downloaded and installed it. When i started the app i was very impressed by its user friendly design and simple navigation. In the beginning i thought it was just another ebook reader or something, but as i slowly started understanding all its features it got really interesting. It turned out to be just the thing i was seeking to be a part of the literature community.

Manage kindle collections via computer (Tutorial)

I bought my kindle some days back and i can't express how happy i am with it. All its features are too good. But one thing i find a bit difficult is managing the collections in kindle. In the beginning it was not that much a problem as the number of books were less. But as the number started increasing managing the books and sorting them into collections started becoming very difficult and boring. I don't understand why amazon has not made any provisions for managing the collections from the computer. Anyway, so i was looking around for some trick to manage the collections from the computer when i came across the Kindle collection manager.

Kindle Collection Manager
Kindle collection manager is a small utility program to manage kindle collections from the computer in windows. It is free and easy to use. Here is a tutorial for it.

Step 1) Click here to download it.

Step 2) You need to have .Net Framework 4 or higher to use it. A setup is provided in the downloaded folder. Clicking it will download the framework and install it. After that install the kindle collection manager.

Step 3) First connect the kindle to the computer. Then start the kindle collection manager. You will get a new window. At the left side it shows the files on the kindle as you see on the computer and on the right side it shows the kindle collections as you see on your kindle.

Step 4) Below are the things you can do in kindle collection manager.

Create or delete collections:- To create a new collection or delete a existing one , right-click on the collection part of the window.
Add files to the collection:- The file to be added should be initially in the kindle drive. You will see the file in the left side, just drag the file and place it in the desired collection.

Step 5) When done click on the "Commit changes to kindle" button and then on "Eject kindle and close" button. This will save the collections in the kindle and eject the kindle.

Step 6) To see the changes you have to restart the kindle, to do so click "menu" button in the kindle then choose "settings" option from the menu. Then in settings, again click "menu" button and choose the "Restart" option.

Note: This tutorial was made using the kindle keyboard model and i cant be sure if it works for the newer models. So if any body has tested it on some newer model, please share your experience with us.

Making a Folder Invisible in Windows

There are hundreds of reason why you would like to make a folder invisible, like playing a prank, security reasons or hiding something. Some of you may have special reasons to hide the folder ;-) . Well you could just password protect it, but it becomes very inconvenient to provide password every time you want to open the folder, especially if the folder is used very frequently. Making the folder invisible provides adequate security without to much hassle. So just thought of sharing this tutorial. So here we go

Step 1) Right click on the folder --> Properties --> Customize --> "Change Icon" option.

Step 2) From the icons select the invisible folder icon.

Step 3) Now all you will be able to see is the folder name. To make it invisible too right click and select Rename.
Press "ALT+255(Num Pad)" in other word "hold on to ALT button and type 255 on the Num pad"
(This will add a invisible gap as the name). You are done. (Remember where the folder is or you may misplace it)

NOTE :- No offense to Rebecca Black but i had no choice but to hide the folder as some of the people who accidentally heard the song, had seizures (They are OK now and are trying to adjust to their normal life).

Many times you may have access to others computer and like all the tech geeks you too would be itching to know all their saved passwords. So here is how you can do it in Firefox.

Click on "Edit" in the menu bar. Then "Preferences ". Then "Security" tab. Then "Saved Passwords". Then click "Show Passwords".
