Marianne from Esme and the Laneway is a fashion blogger and cyclist and we asked her to review the new Lekker bike – known as the Jordaan. Here’s what she had to say…

I’m always excited at the chance of riding a new bike, and when I saw the Lekker Jordaan I literally squealed with delight – it’s absolutely gorgeous!

A solid, curvy frame with similarly plump tyres, high handlebars with soft grips and a good fat saddle, the overall look is sturdy and voluptuous – not words I thought I’d use to describe a bike! I rode the mint green version, which is especially pretty.

The first thing I have to note is the kickstand – so important with bikes and so often underrated. Suitably chunky, it was easy to move back and forth – even in precious heels – and supported the bike really well, even on uneven ground. I’ve had too many experiences with stiff kickstands that are a struggle to put down, only for them to then have a personality change, become decidedly flimsy and collapse under the bike’s weight. Not so here. Phew.

So, to the actual riding. As is the style with Dutch bikes, the riding position for this is very raised. The bike is, according to the description, suitable for riders from 5’1 to 6’4. At 5’4, I’m at the shorter end of the scale, and even with the seat all the way down it did feel quite tall. But once up and going, I love riding up this high. It makes me feel very safe on the road, and I have excellent visibility – I can see cars and they can see me!

I love the high handlebars, too, which encourage some very good posture and an upright riding position. With that plush saddle – the largest I’ve seen, the most comfortable I’ve been on – it gave me the feeling of being sat on my couch, rather than a bike; a wonderfully relaxed feeling for riding!

Verdict? A delight to look at AND ride!

Iva Jean is a bike fashion and lifestyle brand that provides functional and fashionable clothing – encouraging women to incorporate biking into their everyday lives. Their garments are constructed of high quality materials and produced in Seattle, Washington (USA).

Their debut range includes the Reveal Skirt and Daily Blouse. The Reveal Skirt has the versatility of a classic black tailored skirt but incorporates a back zipper that opens up extra fabric for comfort and ease while pedalling a bike. When you reach your destination just close the zip and you’re sporting a stylish pencil skirt. An invisible side zip and darts reinforce the tailored look. There’s also a hidden pocket at the waist for a credit card, key or ID.

The Reveal Skirt is also great for travelling as it’s water and wind resistant, wrinkle-free, dries quickly and holds its shape. It’s made of the same amazing Schoeller-Dryskin material as our popular (but sadly now discontinued for us) Outlier Daily Riding Pants.

Match your Reveal Skirt with the Iva Jean organic cotton Daily Blouse which has a structured roomy fit, plus a back pleat for comfort when reaching forward on the handlebars.

We love the idea of Good Cycles – a Melbourne-based social enterprise/not for profit mobile bike service that fixes your bike while you’re at work, university or even at home.

Professional mechanics are teamed with trainees and together they take their cargo bikes around Melbourne and fix bikes. While they provide a service to you, dear bike rider, they also give training and employment to long-term unemployed and disadvantaged folks. It’s a win-win situation!

A standard service (the Good Standard) is $77 while The Good as Gold is a very thorough service for $170. You can also pick and choose what you’d like fixed which individually costs between $15 and $30.

Good Cycles have a special introductory offer of $55 for a standard service, just book here. Register online for yourself or gather your friends or colleagues together for a discounted group service.

Currently services occur on Mondays and Tuesdays and they’ll be adding Thursdays as demand increases.

We love Emily Blunt’s cycle chic outfit in the film Wild Target. A red rain jacket is the perfect cover-up for cool, wet weather (check out our Petra Waterproof Trenchcoat for a similar look) and opaque tights, bright accessories and a cosy hat complete the look.

London based designer Ben Wilson had created the Donky Bike, a load-carrying bike with the strength and simplicity of a BMX.

The Donky Bike has been designed to be ridden easily and safely with whatever you need to take with you. The design distributes weight across a single beam at center of the frame rather than on the handlebars, so the steering and handling remain light and balanced and improving maneuverability in tight space.
