Heel pain in runners can become an excruciating experience. Once you encounter heel or arch pain, it may be difficult to adjust your lifestyle if you are used to being active. It is important for runners to be aware of the symptoms and treatments for some of the more common types of heel or foot arch injuries. Understanding the different types of sports injuries is the key to effective treatment of heel pain in runners.

What is Plantar Fasciitis Pain?

When the plantar fascia, a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue in the sole of the foot that supports the arch of the foot is inflamed, it causes plantar fasciitis pain. It attaches the ball of the foot to the heel. When the foot is on the ground and supporting all of your body weight, it stretches this tissue. Inflammation occurs when this tissue is stretched too far and tears. The effects of the stress can build up gradually or be the result of a sudden movement.

Plantar Fasciitis Pain is Often the Cause of Foot Pain In Runners

There are a number of reasons why plantar fasciitis pain causes foot arch pain in runners. Runners tend to exercise too long and apply too much stress to the feet and plantar fascia, and those with flat feet can be at a higher risk. Combining shoes that lack proper arch support and running routines that are too extensive puts repetitive stress on the plantar fascia, particularly where it connects to the heel. Severe pain is caused as a result of the inflammation of the torn fibers.

Plantar Fasciitis is commonly caused by the following:

* excessive pronation of the feet

* abrupt increase in physical activity such as running or participating in sports

* shoes that do not fit properly and insufficient arch support

* weight gain

Where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel is commonly where the pain is felt. Due to the fact that the fascia constricts when you sleep, you will typically feel the most pain in the mornings. Upon rising from bed, your body weight stretches on the tissue that attaches to the heel bone. Symptoms of heel pain in runners vary from mild to severe. The pattern of pain can be very unpredictable over months at a time. In many cases, the pain vanishes for several weeks, but can easily come back after a single workout or change in activity.

The pain may even temporarily fade as you walk. Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition that runners experience, and along with the triggers discussed above, may occur by abrupt intensification in your training schedule, or by switching running surfaces. This is evident, especially when going from a soft surface to a harder one.

Ways to Prevent Plantar Fasciitis Pain

While plantar fasciitis can be treated, it does not heal quickly. heel pain in runners can be avoided in a number of ways. Most sports physiotherapists recommend the following approach to prevent Plantar Fasciitis:

Use Appropriate Footwear and Orthotic Shoe Inserts – Supportive footwear is important. Many cases will benefit from wearing orthotic shoe insoles inside the shoes to improve foot biomechanics. Avoid walking without shoes or foot protection. Make sure your shoes provide support, and try running on a softer surface.

Ice – Decrease inflammation and pain by applying ice to your heel. Set your foot on a frozen bottle of water or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel 3 or 4 times a day for 5-10 minutes each time. Desensitized tissue can be at risk of ice burn, so never ice more than once an hour.

Change Your Activity – Consider swimming or cycling, as they may be a better exercise option for you. When you begin running, begin at a much lower level of intensity and a shorter distance, then you can build up gradually. Reduce the volume or intensity of training, or simply reduce the amount of time spent on your feet.

Stretch – before, during, and after physicalactivity. Tight hamstring and/or calf muscles (behind the thigh) limit range of motion and put extra strain on the plantar fascia. Keeping muscles flexible and relaxed and joints mobile can be accomplished by stretching as a warm up and a cool down. It is highly recommended that you stretch the plantar fasciitis before exercise.

If the problem persists, talk to a podiatrist or physiotherapist.

About the Author:

The orthotic insoles made by Footminders are highly recommended by most of the podiatrists and specialty foot care stores. These orthotics are recommended because they are the result of extensive research done by foot care experts.
Could there be any truth to those claims that you can think yourself thinner? On the surface it doesn’t seem likely, since it is hard to imagine how you could change your metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn fat) simply by changing your way of thinking.

But of course changing your metabolic rate isn’t the only way to think yourself thinner. If you can convince yourself to adopt habits that reduce the amount of food you eat, or change the types of foods you eat to a more healthy selection, then you are going to lose weight. That’s not rocket science. The trouble is that it can be hard to implement healthy habits, especially if you are saddled with bad ones that you have picked up over the duration of your lifetime.

Carolyn Hansen recognized this problem quite some time ago when she was forced to try to figure out why it was that she was unable to achieve any long-lasting success with her own weight loss efforts. For a long period of time she followed the latest fad diets and tried the popular exercise programs of the day. Both of these approaches turned out to be based on a poor understanding of how the human body responds to food and exercise.

Even when she DID stumble across good advice she found it near impossible to stick with the suggested course of action for the length of time that was needed to see long-lasting results. It wasn’t until she was able to examine her core beliefs about food and exercise that she was able to see where the problem was. After that it was just a matter of figuring out how to isolate those beliefs and replace them with ones that helped, rather than hindered her efforts to lose weight.

One of the techniques she learned about is visualization. This is the practice of running a movie through your mind of the results you hope to achieve from your efforts. Athletes will often employ the practice of visualization when they are having trouble attaining the degree of performance they think they ought to be able to achieve but are not. In fact, Carolyn was able to use visualization to hep her get over her fear of standing on stage in the bodybuilding competitions she entered many years ago. It was only after she begin using visualization that she won the title she had been pursuing for years.

Visualization can also be used to help lose weight. One of the recommended practices in her book The Weight Loss Motivation Bible is to visualize your slimmer, healthier self before you go to sleep at night. Play the visualization like a movie in your mind.

Now, you are NOT going to wake up any thinner because you employ visualization. But you WILL slowly reprogram your subconscious mind to seek to harmonize your outer self (your body) with your inner self (that slim body in your visualizations). It will do this by encouraging you to establish the right habits to make your outer self merge with your inner self.

In practice this means you will begin eating more healthy foods and enjoy those foods more than you used to do. You’ll see more rewards in working out and be less inclined to skip workouts. In short, you’ll do the RIGHT thing more often than you did before.

It’s not magic. It’s just a consequence of tapping into the power of your subconscious mind to get done the things you know are possible but until now you may have had trouble putting into effect. If you need a comprehensive system for enabling this “mind reprogramming” be sure to check out Carolyn Hansen’s book The Weight Loss Motivation Bible.

If you have ever watched a master hypnotist at work you will come away thinking that the mind is incredibly susceptible to suggestion. Once you see grown men dancing on the stage and singing “I’m a little teacup” you don’t doubt that it may indeed be possible to lose weight by having a hypnotist implant subconscious suggestions that help you avoid eating food that is bad for you and make you try harder to meet your workout schedule.

But hypnotherapy for weight loss purposes is deemed to be a little too much “on the fringe” for most people. People are about as likely to schedule an appointment with a hypnotherapist as they are to admit they have a drinking problem. In both cases it feels easier to deny you have a problem than to take active steps to correct it.

The good news is that it really isn’t necessary to go to the trouble of trying hypnotherapy as a means to “reprogram” your mind for weight loss success. It is possible to do it yourself, and not through the practice of self-hypnosis either.

Carolyn Hansen has penned an ebook that she calls The Weight Loss Motivation Bible. She believes that most people fail with their weight loss efforts because they are unable to summon up and maintain the levels of motivation that are needed to adopt the habits that inevitably lead to weight loss. Before anyone begins a new healthy eating plan, or a promising exercise regimen, it is the MIND that must first be worked on.

All of us carry with us a system of beliefs that help us figure out what we will do on a day to day, and hour by hour basis. Not all of these beliefs are fully transparent to us though. We might believe that eating fewer bear claws each week will help us lose weight. But we might also harbor a belief that it is more important to eat that bear claw during the morning tea break so that we can feel good about having “scored” some free comfort food. It’s hard to turn down free food. Especially the really yummy stuff.

It’s these secondary thoughts and beliefs – the ones that counter your efforts to “do the right thing” that Carolyn is most interested in. You have to be able to identify them before you can weed them out and replace them with thoughts and beliefs that encourage you to stay on track in your weight loss efforts.

Anyone can implement the techniques that Carolyn proposes. They do not involve self-hypnosis. Instead they are really forms of mind control – powerful methods of self-persuasion that work on the subconscious level to literally alter your “weight loss personality”. This is the side of you that determines how you respond to the challenge to lose weight. Change your weight loss personality and you can change your body weight. This is the basic approach that is taught in The Weight Loss Motivation Bible.

How many times have you seen adverts in magazines, on the tv, or on the internet that promise overnight weight loss akin to losing a vital limb in weight. A miracle herbal remedy, THE “secret” diet, or a 5 minute a day exercise routine that offers to shed kilos off your figure. Do you think if it was really that simple that we would still be in the grip of a global obesity problem? Despite all these so called health foods, increased sales of fitness equipment and revolutionary diets, why are we still gaining weight!Sadly the often very suspect science and marketing of “health” products has just served to confuse many of us. Even the lesser educated, but well-meaning, health practitioners have been suckered into the search for the latest quick fix, selling supplements and pointless exercise equipment.

What follows is my 10 truths about losing body fat. I pull no punches, be prepared to shake your head and disagree, however, if you truly want to lose 1, 10 or even 50 kilos of body fat the principles and facts stated here remain the same.

1. DIETING, in the traditional sense of cutting calories is NOT the optimum method to lose body fat. By starving yourself, your body quickly reacts to preserve itself from its foolish owner. Your metabolism is slowed, increasing your body’s ability to store the fuel that is taken in as fat. As soon as you stop the diet you quickly regain the weight, often in a worse situation than before you started the diet. And to make matters worst with a now horribly slow metabolism it will become even harder to lose weight again!

2. Diet PILLS, liposuction and other clinical procedures are nothing more than temporary solutions. Made famous (or should I say infamous!) by celebrities looking for a quick fix to their excess body fat, these procedures are becoming more accessible due to continued high demand. However, you are simply treating the symptoms (i.e. the excess body fat) rather than the cause (i.e. you are not exercising enough and eating too much!). Even if you do go under the surgeons knife it is likely you will still put the weight back on if your poor eating and exercise habits continue.

3. Diets that claim you can eat UNLIMITED amounts of a particular food type should be avoided. A calorie is a calorie regardless of its source. Eating 50 pieces of broccoli at 100Kcal is the same as eating 50 pieces of chocolate at 100Kcal. The excess will always be stored as fat!

4. Doing 100 CRUNCHES per day will not make you lose 10kg from your waist, and more often than not, it will not give you a 6 pack either! The adverts that claim to “melt” fat from your stomach, bum and thighs are challenging one of the fundamental rules of weight loss YOU CAN’T SPOT REDUCE. So throw away that ab trainer you bought on the shopping channel and make some room to do some real exercise!

5. Simply paying for 6 months GYM membership will not lose you body fat by default you actually need to use the gym too! Get the most from your membership by using it at least 3 times a week, hire a good trainer to help set up a program for you and help you perform the exercises correctly and safely.

6. ONLY DIETING will not necessarily give you the sustained weight loss you desire. We have already established that starving yourself is not the right method, and many limited diets quickly become hard to follow. Eating correctly is only half the battle.

7. ONLY EXERCISE will not necessarily work either. A quote often used by trainers is “You can’t out-train a trash diet”. This is true for all but the genetically gifted, that seem to be able to eat as many pizzas and burgers as they desire, do no exercise and still look slim. However, if you are not one of the “lucky” ones, with freakish genetics, it doesn’t matter if you burn an extra 1000 Calories on the treadmill, if you follow it up with a super-sized macdonalds drive thru on the way home from the gym, you’re probably not gonna get the results you desire.

8. CARDIO TRAINING alone is not the optimum method for losing body fat. Cardiovascular exercise such as jogging, cycling and swimming is great for burning calories, however the more you do the more efficient your body becomes at performing the workout so you end up burning fewer calories for the same volume of exercise. The next time you are stood waiting to get on to your favorite exercise bike or treadmill have a look at other cardio gym goers you often see and ask yourself if they have noticeable improved in body shape? I will guarantee that you will not see dramatic changes in any of them. Those gym goers with the low, single figure body fat percentages generally hang out in the free weights area, following a simple but effective resistance based workout.

9. A combination of CARDIO and RESISTANCE training, coupled with a sensible healthy diet to fuel and assist your training IS the optimum method for burning body fat. This is a change in lifestyle you must make for the rest of your life and not just the next 10 weeks. To achieve and maintain a great body, regular exercise and a sensible diet is essential.

10. STOP looking for the quick and easy route to a supreme body, it simply does not exist! However there is an optimum method for increasing your metabolism, burning body fat and looking great for the rest of your life. The solution is simple but NOT easy. It requires hard work and dedication to seek the right route for you.

That’s it, 10 truths about losing 10kg of body fat. I appreciate that this doesn’t fit in with the commonly held beliefs for losing body fat, but the commonly held beliefs obviously don’t work otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this report!

If you can’t seem to find the motivation to workout these days you shouldn’t feel bad about it.

You should feel rotten about it.

That’s because when you are not adding sufficient physical activity to your schedule you are sending a signal to your body that you’re done using it and it is OK to begin the downward slide to frailty, loss of physical enjoyment, and disease.

If you are younger than 35 years of age, it’s coming. If you are older, you already know what I am talking about.

Aging sucks. Aging while fat sucks even more.

So let’s agree that there’s a huge incentive for you to want to workout (to ward off the unpleasant side effects of aging as a couch potato). It’s increased health, greater enjoyment of life, and lower likelihood of dying of an entirely preventable disease, like heart attack, high blood pressure, and cancer. All of these conditions have an incidence in the general population that tracks very well with the amount of weight the person carries into their later years.

So you know you need to exercise. You want to exercise. But for life of you (pun intended) you can’t seem to say sufficiently motivated to actually put the time in at the gym or out on the running track that circles your local park.

But what if there was a way to switch on the motivation, so that you didn’t have to struggle with the decision of whether or not to make time for exercise. Instead you’d just do it because the debating in your head was swept away, replaced by a directive to get the job done. One that you always obeyed.

If you could find a way to become HIGHLY motivated to workout, then you know you would benefit from the outcome.

But how do you do that? How do you tap into that well-spring of motivation that you’ve seen in others who DO manage to achieve their weight loss goals?

Carolyn Hansen set out to answer that question when she decided to sit down and create The Weight Loss Motivation Bible. She says that if you are looking for a way to implement sustainable, almost effortless weight loss, then you need to begin not with the great sounding diet or exercise plan, but with your mind. You need to address any negative thoughts or beliefs that are working behind the scenes to kill your motivation to sticking to a healthy exercise regimen.

If you want to REPROGRAM your subconscious mind so that it doesn’t fight your efforts to create a firmer, slimmer, and more vibrant body, take a moment to check out Carolyn’s story. You’ll find that she is offering all her best techniques for supercharging your motivation and staying on track with your weight loss efforts.

If I say the words “lose weight” the first two concepts likely to spring into your mind are “diet” and “exercise”.

There are several reasons for this. One is that you really can’t expect to be able to change your body weight for the long-term if you are not prepared to make changes in at least one of these areas. Food is the means by which you put energy and nutrients into your body. Physical activity is the means to converting those components into raw work and the development of a fitter more capable physical system (your body).

So you really SHOULD think about exercise and nutrition when your goal is to shed some unwanted pounds of fat, which is the result of adding more energy to your body than can be burned by your metabolism (which is very dependent on your level of physical activity).

But there is another reason you think “diet” and “exercise”. It is because those two concepts are hot on the lips of almost everyone that has ever offered you any advice about how to slim down.

The result is that your subconscious mind has become conditioned to think “diet” and “exercise”. Just like Pavlov’s dog that salivates at the sound of a bell. You are quite aware that these are the “solutions” to being heavier than you want to be. You don’t doubt the truth of these beliefs, and you would expect to see results if only you put them into effect long enough.

But there are usually other accompanying thoughts and beliefs about diet and exercise that are just as important to the weight loss story. They usually go something like this: You hate diets of any kind because being hungry is no fun, and besides you couldn’t possibly give up the foods that help you get through your day. You don’t have time to relax, let alone to exercise, so don’t even think of trying to carve out a workout schedule – it’s just not going to happen. You don’t NEED to take care of the problem now. Being overweight is a burden, but millions of people deal with it, so you can too.

Carolyn Hansen, the author of The Weight Loss Motivation Bible says that you mind is like software, and that these secondary thoughts are like errant commands in the code, or bugs, that get in the way of execution of the code that you really want to run, which is the set of commands that would have you actually making changes to the way you eat and the manner in which you exercise.

You have to flush out the bugs before you can expect to be able to carry out a weight loss plan of action that has a real chance to succeed. Most people fail to recognize this requirement and jump into their next promising eating plan or exercise regime before they have purged their mind of the gremlins that will shortly interrupt their progress.

That’s why 95 percent of attempts to lose weight do not result in the kind of outcome that was hope for.

If you want to maximize your chances, begin with your mind. Reprogram it accept nothing less than the result you want. If you need a system to help you achieve that, then be sure to check out Carolyn Hansen’s book The Weight Loss Motivation Bible.

It is easy to convince yourself that getting rid of those unwanted excess pounds of fat is just not going to happen for you. Not because you have not tried. You have. But each time the result of going on a new diet or exercise program has been to end up where you started.

That’s not only not much fun, it demoralizes you and makes it that much more likely you’ll give up the next time at an even earlier stage.

Failure tends to follow on failure. It’s exactly the kind of spiral that sucks ships to the bottom of the ocean and keeps you from imagining real weight loss success.

Instead, what you need to do is break the cycle. Instead of allowing your subconscious mind to convince you that you are wasting your time trying to lose weight (because you’ve already been down this road and look where it has got you every other time) you need to recalibrate your thinking.

But you cannot do this simply by repeating to yourself that this time it is going to be different. That kind of positive thinking is great for STARTING your latest plan of action, but it won’t provide you with a whole lot of staying power.

Here’s what will. It is called The Weight Loss Motivation Bible.

It is a comprehensive system for reprogramming your subconscious mind so that you are always highly motivated to lose that excess weight. The author is Carolyn Hansen, a former bodybuilding champion who has been involved in the fitness industry for more than 30 years.

She believes that the number one factor that keeps people from reaching their weight loss goals is that they do not realize that their mind is constantly working against them, sabotaging their efforts to get into better shape. She says this goes on WITHOUT their knowledge, so it is really difficult to combat without proper instruction.

Imagine for a moment that you have a dual personality, and that one of the personalities has no idea that the other one is constantly slipping in subliminal messages to control the actions of the other. That’s exactly what Carolyn Hansen says is going on with most people who are unable to lose weight. They don’t realize they are carrying around a second “weight loss personality” that does not respect your desire to make changes to your body.

You need to flush that personality out, says Carolyn, and replace it with one that knows how to motivate and encourage you. That’s how you achieve the kind of trim, vibrant body that you know is buried beneath those unsightly pounds of unwanted body fat.

If you want to exorcise that uncooperative weight loss personality from your subconscious mind, she says, read her book: The Weight Loss Motivation Bible.
