Een reis van drie maanden zat er deze keer niet in dus moest het een wat kortere route zijn. 

De andere voorwaarden waren…

  • het moet er lekker warm zijn, het is altijd fijn om in de winterperiode even wat zon op te gaan snuiven
  • het is wel handig als het een bekend land is, gezien de beperkte voorbereidingstijd
  • het moet een bergachtig gebied zijn, is wel zwaar fietsen, zeker met bepakking maar de beloning met de prachtige uitzichten is er dan ook naar als je weer over een pas heen gaat

Na enig zoeken op internet en het raadplegen van wereldfietser.nl kwam ik dan toch weer uit in Thailand. Hier heb ik in 2007 ook al van zuid naar noord gefietst op doortocht naar Laos en China. In het uiterste noord-oosten is het bosrijk en bergachtig en is een bekende route die de ‘Mae Hong Son Loop’ wordt genoemd. Deze is vooral bij Motorrijders populair. De website www.gt-rider.com heeft er dan ook een speciale kaart van gemaakt.

Op een vrije zaterdag dus maar eens richting Amsterdam gegaan naar reisboekhandel Pied a Terre. Wat een fantastisch winkel is dit toch, was hier al eens eerder geweest. Een complete winkel met alleen maar reisgidsen en kaarten van elk gebied ter wereld wat je maar kunt bedenken. De gt-riders kaart was ook in het assortiment aanwezig.

Het opschrift op  de kaart belooft al veel goeds: ‘A biker’s delight, ride the legendary road of 1.864 curves’

Enkele andere uitspraken die over deze route die ik tegenkwam:

  • the most mountainous and forested province in Thailand
  • the least densely populated province in Thailand
  • called the ‘Land of 3 mists’ due to the year round mist – mist from forest fires in the summer, a dewy mist in rainy season and foggy mist in the winter
  • was once known as the ‘Siberia of Thailand’ due to its isolated location
  • historically elephants were sent to be trained here where the rugged terrain is an ideal condition for this

De meeste Motorrijders doen 600 Km lange route in 4 á 5 dagen, ik heb de tijd dus zal er wel wat langer over doen, heb ik ook ruim de tijd voor. Het letterlijke hoogtepunt van de tocht is de hoogste berg van Thailand de Doi Intranon waarvan de top op 2565 meter ligt.
