If you have kids, then you have already realized that your once beautiful car is more like a minefield.

Think I’m exaggerating? Unless you have a strict no food in the car policy, then you will find crushed goldfish crackers and smashed fruit snacks on the floorboards and in between all the crevices.

For those of you saying, “My kids just won’t eat in the car,” I’ll let you try that rule on a road trip with a toddler. Have fun!

1. Suction Cup Shower Caddies

My kids lose their art supplies in the car all the time, and a million stray colored pencils leave the car looking messy and unorganized. So, I love this genius idea from Grey House Harbor of using suction cup shower caddies to organize kid stuff.

Keep in mind that you want to be smart about where you place them on the car windows and what you place in them to avoid safety hazards. But still, genius!

2. Travel-Friendly Busy Bags

Another smart idea for parents of younger kids is to have already prepared busy bags specifically for the car. Busy bags can be filled with activity books, stickers, and crayons.

By having designated car activity bags, your kids will have something to reach for each time they ride, and they will know where everything belongs.

3. Collapsible Trunk Organizers

A collapsible trunk organizer can come in handy for organizing your car in many ways. Some people use these just for grocery shopping, but they are also excellent for car organization, especially in the trunk.

A handy tool that we often overlook or forget about all together is the carabiner. Go ahead and stock up on carabiners and put them in your car anywhere you can.

By using carabiners, you can clear up some floor space by hanging items instead. Plus, for kids, you can use carabiners to hang their activity bags.

6. Plastic Cereal Container for a Car Trash Can

You already have your hands full getting the kids in the car, buckled in safely, and getting the diaper bag in the car. So, it makes sense that when you get home, you only get out your kid.

The problem is that you leave your trash and mess behind. Quite possibly, the receipts and the tissues and the wrappers end up all over the car. Yuck. Instead, turn a plastic cereal container into a makeshift car trash can!

7. Glove Compartment Organization

While we hope nothing ever happens while we are driving around with our kids in the car, it is still best to be prepared for emergencies.

For instance, if you get pulled over by the cops, you do not need to panic about locating your registration as well as calming the kids down in the back seat.

Finally, think of your trunk as your car’s closet.

If you spend a lot of time in your car (or your afternoons and evenings are spent transporting the kids from one activity to the next), then consider adding a clear drawer storage organizer to your trunk.

Let’s face it: most toddlers are picky as hell.  Figuring out lunch for picky toddlers is sometimes harder than it looks.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made lunch or dinner for my daughter only to have her barely pick at it, push it away, and say “all done!” when she clearly needed to eat more.  

I hated doing it, but like many parents, I would give in and just end up giving her what she wanted, whether it was a pouch of applesauce, crackers, or some bread. 

I know, I know, parents shouldn’t do that.

And that’s why I set out to find ideas of what to make for lunch for picky toddlers.  You know, meals that they would actually eat so that I wouldn’t feel like I was just making food for the trash can (yeah, the dog would end up getting a fair amount of it too). 

So, keep reading, and I’ll share my top 10 ideas for lunch for picky toddlers that they will actually eat!

10 Ideas for Lunch for Picky Toddlers

As I started to research this, I found that there’s actually quite a lot of good ideas out there.

Granted, there’s plenty of stuff where I looked at it and said “yeah, still no way in hell that this will be eaten” but there were several ideas that looked great and were thoroughly enjoyed by my picky little one.

Pro tip: Most of these recipes work for dinner too. Keep in mind that these are all the “main” courses – you would still want to supplement these ideas with fruit, vegetables, and any other sides your toddler likes to eat.

1) Slow Cooker Chicken Pasta with Broccoli 

A lot of times “kid food” is often something that you wouldn’t necessarily feel like eating as your main course.  That’s fine, that’s normal. It’s why there’s a kid’s menu at most restaurants. 

That’s why I wanted to kick off this list with something that the whole family can enjoy and feel good about.  

Side note: I am a big believer in cooking meals that the entire family can eat, together, instead of cooking separate meals for different people.  With that said, sometimes you just have to deal with a picky toddler and *temporarily* break the rules.

2) Goldfish Encrusted Chicken Nuggets

Okay, so now we’re onto something that really is geared more towards the little ones, although I wouldn’t mind snacking on these.

You take something that is already sort of kid food (chicken nuggets), and make it even more kid-delectable by coating it with mashed Goldfish.

3) Macaroni Egg Salad

Toddlers generally love mac & cheese, and I like to think of this as a slightly healthier version of that (more protein from the egg, there’s celery, it’s not loaded with artificial looking cheese, etc.). 

In terms of texture, your picky toddler should be up for eating something like this.  If they are extremely picky, consider going lighter on the pepper.

4) Apple Chicken Quesadillas 

Here’s another healthier spin on a kid-favorite.  As an adult, you’ve learned that apples go pretty well with cheese (and wine too, but we’ll put that aside for the moment).  

So why not add apples to your cheese quesadillas?

Kids love it, and you will too.  I’m not sure how I could ever go back to plain old cheese quesadillas after this.

5) Fish Cakes

When I was a kid, I remember growing up with fish sticks.  Weird, processed fish in stick form, breaded and baked…it was good. But I’m not even sure what kind of fish I was eating.

Picky kids don’t like regular fish. It has a weird smell, an icky texture (for a lot of kids), and sometimes a strong flavor.

Consider this a more healthy and natural alternative to the old frozen processed fish sticks.

This recipe was designed specifically with picky kids in mind.  It’s made from real fish, and the texture of the prepared fish cakes are consistent and less “fish-like” – which makes it more likely your picky toddler will eat it!

6) Turkey, Avocado, and Hummus Roll Ups 

My little picky toddler loves avocado and hummus.  It’s smooth, the flavor is mild, and it tastes good.  

This recipe adds a little protein by wrapping the whole thing up in turkey, but you could just as easily do it with a flour wrap if your little one doesn’t want to eat turkey.  

Perfect for a healthy snack, or if you eat enough of them, it could also work as a meal.

7) Mini PB&J Finger Foods

PB&J is a staple in most homes.  The combination of peanut butter and jelly (or peanut butter and anything) is difficult for anyone to refuse – adults and toddlers alike. 

Your picky eater probably already eats PB&J just fine, but this recipe goes a step further to make the PB&J fun to eat, with shapes and bite-sized pieces.

8) Sweet Potato and Broccoli Medallions

I’m always looking for clever ways to sneak in the healthy food that they don’t like.  Broccoli usually tops the list.

This is one of those recipes where, as long as they don’t know what’s in it, they’ll think they’re just eating a tasty snack.

9) Chicken Parmesan Bites

Another picky toddler spin on an old classic.  

Bite-sized chicken parmesan. 

Serve it by itself as a quick snack, or add some vegetables and pasta and you’ve got a well-balanced meal.

Grilled cheese is another classic kid meal that even the pickiest of eaters will generally still eat.

Let’s be honest — probably not.

Here in the Midwest, there are several months of the year when it is cold and there is plenty of the white stuff.

Snow is a four letter word most of us have a love/hate relationship with.  It’s pretty and fun to play in, but it can also be a hassle (driving can be a major pain in the ass). And sometimes, when old man winter is feeling especially generous, it means you’re stuck in your house for a while.

Fortunately, this makes me an “expert” on finding fun snow day activities (since I’ve been snowed in more than a few times myself!).

So, if you are dreading that first good snowfall and the inevitable school “snow” days, fear not! Here are 10 insanely fun snow day activities for you and the kids this winter!

1) Build a snow man (and even paint it)

Do you want to build a snow man? (never mind, been watching too much Frozen)

Okay, so I am starting off the list with a more than obvious suggestion, but I promise this one is worth it.

Some of my favorite memories involve getting all bundled up and making the biggest snowman my sister and I could muster. It was ALWAYS better if mom and/or dad were out there too because they could lift the big pieces!

An interesting pro-tip I found online on how to take your snowman making to the next level: Snowman painting!

You can do this with with good old-fashioned food coloring! Using water and food coloring in a spray or squirt bottle is a great way to add a pop of color to your snowman and brighten your yard friend.

2) Make snow ice cream

I’ve actually done this one myself and I look forward to it every winter!

I know some people get weird about eating snow but honestly…as long as it’s fresh (and not yellow) you are totally good to go. I ate my weight in snow every winter as a kid, and to my knowledge, no permanent damage!

Here’s a recipe you can use from Inner Child Fun. I haven’t tried this specific one myself yet, but I plan to! It’s a pretty standard recipe usually involving some sugar, vanilla, and fresh snow.

It’s honestly so delicious and easy. Plus, it’s a fun snow day activity that mostly involves being inside where it’s warm!

3) Make snow cones

Along the line of more edible snow creations: snow cones! This one is even easier than the snow recipe. It really only involves juice and snow.  As in, take your favorite kind of juice, and drizzle it over a cup of fresh, clean snow.  (And if you’re weirded out by using real snow, you can also put ice in a blender and it’ll work just as well.)

If you are feeling particularly fancy, you can use flavoring syrups for the real deal. Or make your own flavoring syrup like the recipe I found here.

Snow cones are a great way to, again, have fun indoors where it is warm. It is also just a fun way to use the snow to make your little one’s day.

If the snow is going to be the “bad” guy and keep you stuck at home, you might as well have fun with it and have a sweet treat.

4) Go sledding

Here’s another one of my most fun snow day activities that I always did as a kid: Finding that perfect hill and going sledding!

I used to love seeing how fast we could going down the hill or take turns pulling each other as fast as we could in the sleds. (Be careful, of course, and make sure you’re supervising your kid depending on age.)

This seems like an obvious fun snow day activity, but it had to make the list. It’s a great way to burn off all the energy our kids have.  All that going up and down the hill, or pulling a sibling in the sled? They’ll be ready for nice quiet evening of hot chocolate and movies in no time. Mom win!

Plus, I found a great way to get a two for one activity out of this one:

Make your own sled….out of duct tape!

Here are some awesome step by step instructions on making a simple sled out of cardboard and duct tape. It’a a great way to burn time and keep the kids engaged. First craft time, then time to play outside and burn off all that excess energy testing them out!

5) Decorate ice globes 

Our next suggestion is one I have been DYING to try and always end up forgetting to do. Not this year! It’s on my list of musts for this winter-time.

Ice globes to decorate my front walk way.

This suggestion and step by step instructions comes from Queen Vanna Creations. It’s super simple and a great way to have fun on a snow day.

All you need is water, some cold weather, food coloring and balloons. Essentially you fill up the balloons with water, add a few drops of food coloring and set them outside to freeze. Then once they are frozen you can break the balloon and peel of the rubber to reveal a beautiful marble-like ice globe!

Talk about fun!

6) Bake, Bake, Bake!

My little guy is only two and he already LOVES when momma breaks out the baking stuff. He loves adding ingredients, stirring everything up, taste testing and then he waits (somewhat patiently) staring through the oven window while everything bakes.

Baking is a perfect snow day activity because it involves things that taste great, warming the house with the oven, and passing time while everyone is stuck inside. Instead of getting bored, kids get to be engaged, and you get a warm, sweet treat at the end!

I especially like recipes with a snow theme for this particular snow day activity list. I really liked these snowman cupcakes from the Little Sunny Kitchen!

7) Make homemade Play-Doh

Another great way to pass the time is to make your own Play-Doh! This step by step instruction guide is a great, inexpensive example of how simple making Play-Doh can be.

I love the idea of this if you don’t already have Play-Doh stored somewhere in the house because, again, it’s a two-for-one type of activity.

This fun snow day activity starts with crafting and learning to make the Play-Doh. Then, you can make your own shapes and designs and can even finish off by baking the Play-Doh shapes and painting them!

It’s a great activity that can take most of an afternoon without anyone realizing it, keeping kids engaged and mom/dad’s nerves at ease!

8) Build a fort 

Building a fort, or letting your kids experiment with building a fort is a great way to pass the time on a snowy day.

Depending on your kid’s age you can get involved and really show them how it’s done, or you could have a “fort-off” if you have multiple kids (or they have friends over). Give each kid supplies and a certain amount of time to build.

Then, mom or dad can come in and give out the “most creative fort” or “biggest fort” awards! Imagine all the things you could get done with the kids occupied for that long!

9) Have an indoor picnic

Along the lines of fort building comes the indoor picnic. Whether or not you decide to go the fort route, this can be a great way to make boring activities (such as lunch) exciting for your little ones.

If you do decide to use the fort suggestion, you could even start by building an epic fort and finish with a great snack/picnic inside!

Have the kids help you make cute little sandwiches or snowman-themed foods for your picnic and then camp out in the living room and enjoy!

10) Enjoy some hot chocolate!

No fun snow day is complete without hot chocolate!

Whether spending your time outdoors, indoors, or a split between them both, you can end the snow day with a great cup of hot chocolate using the Frugal Gals recipe here. This simple recipe has minimal ingredients and can be set in the crock pot to cook while you spend the day enjoying your kiddos!

I love the idea of sitting in the fort, with a warm cup of hot chocolate in hand, telling stories, reading books or watching movies. So, cozy!

I love Halloween, and I’ll be damned if a baby is going to stop me from enjoying costumes and candy.  

Picking out a costume isn’t necessarily easy – they all look cute, and before you buy one, you need to have an argument with your spouse about which one you’re going to get.

The day I dragged that Blackstone griddle out of its box and set it up on our back deck changed our family summers forever. Two years later, I still get a ridiculous little rush of excitement every time I fire it up. We’ve been doing meals on the griddle for a few years now, and I keep coming back to sausage Blackstone recipes because they’re so reliable. Whether it’s a weekend breakfast or a quick weeknight dinner, sausage cooks fast, has tons of flavor, and makes for good tastin’ family meals.

I pulled together five recipes that we’ve tried and really enjoy. There’s one breakfast option that’s perfect for Saturday mornings, and four dinner ideas that all come together pretty quickly. The best part? Everything cooks on the same surface, so cleanup is just scraping the griddle and wiping it down.

These aren’t fancy recipes. They’re straightforward meals that work when you want something that tastes good without spending all afternoon in the kitchen. The ingredients are simple, the techniques are basic, and the results are consistently delicious. If you’ve got a Blackstone and some sausages on hand, you’re ready to get started.

5 Delicious Sausage Blackstone Recipes 

1. Smothered Sausage Breakfast Sandwich

This one’s a weekend favorite in our house. With crispy hash browns, juicy sausage, and just the right kick from sriracha mayo, it’s the kind of sandwich you’ll want to eat for breakfast and lunch. Even the kids gobbled it up, and that’s saying something!

Ingredients:

• 2 breakfast sausage patties (about ⅓ lb each)
• ½ white onion, diced
• 1 cup shredded hash browns
• 2 slices American cheese
• 2 eggs
• 4 slices Texas toast
• 2 leaves lettuce
• 2 slices tomato
• Sriracha mayo
• 1 tablespoon butter
• Avocado oil for cooking
• Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

• Divide sausage into two thick patties, about ⅓ lb each.
• Preheat your Blackstone to 375-400°F. Add avocado oil and a pat of butter.
• Toss hash browns into the buttery oil, season with salt and pepper, and spread them into two thin piles. Let them sit and crisp up undisturbed for 10 minutes.
• Add diced onion to the griddle and start sautéing.
• Place sausage patties on the griddle. Cook about 5 minutes per side or until fully cooked.
• Once sausage and onions are cooked, move them to a cooler spot to keep warm.
• Crack the eggs directly onto the griddle. Pop the yolks if you like. Cook ~2 minutes per side.
• Toast Texas toast slices on the griddle until golden brown.
• Flip hash browns once they’re crispy underneath. Top each with a slice of cheese and some grilled onions.
• Assemble: bottom toast, sriracha mayo, lettuce, tomato, cheesy hash browns, sausage, egg, and top toast.

2. Smoked Sausage & Potatoes Hash

Hearty, filling, and so simple. Perfect when you want a comforting dinner that practically cooks itself. I love how the griddle gets the potatoes crispy every time.

Ingredients (serves 4-6):

• 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced
• 2½ lb small red potatoes, cubed
• 1 onion, diced
• ⅓ cup olive oil
• 1 Tbsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp pepper
• ½ tsp smoked paprika
• 2 tsp Creole seasoning or seasoned salt

Instructions:

• Toss potatoes with oil and seasonings; spread on griddle, cover with dome; cook ~15 min, flipping.
• Push potatoes aside, add sausage and onion to cook until browned.
• Mix everything, plate, and serve with hot sauce or fresh herbs.

3. Italian Sausage & Peppers

Classic comfort food with sheet-pan vibes, but on your griddle. Fast, smoky, and perfect for hoagie-style dinners. I always double this because the leftovers are great for next-day lunches.

Ingredients (serves 4-6):

• 10 Italian sausage links (mild or hot)
• 4 bell peppers (mixed colors), thinly sliced
• 1 onion, thinly sliced
• 4 Tbsp oil (avocado or vegetable)
• Salt & pepper
• Optional: provolone or mozzarella, hoagie rolls

• Preheat griddle to medium.
• Oil surface; lay sausages on one side, veggies on the other.
• Cook sausages ~10-15 min, turning occasionally; stir veggies until soft.
• Use thermometer to confirm sausage at 160°F.
• Optional: split rolls, add sausage & veggies, top with cheese, melt.

4. Cowboy Stir-Fry

A colorful, hearty skillet dinner inspired by Tex-Mex cowboy flavors. It combines kielbasa, veggies, potatoes, and even steak if you want. My crew loves it paired with tortillas or rice. My husband joked we could call this “leftovers on steroids.”

Ingredients:

• 2-3 lbs red potatoes
• ½ head cabbage, core removed and chopped
• 2 lbs Ribeye steak
• 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
• 1 sweet onion, chopped
• 1 yellow squash, sliced
• 1 lb Kielbasa, sliced
• Heifer Dust or favorite steak seasoning
• 1 can sweet corn
• ½ jar pickled jalapeños
• 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• 1 bottle Italian dressing
• Oil for cooking

Instructions:

• Preheat griddle to low/medium (around 375°F). Add oil and spread evenly.
• Cut red potatoes and add to griddle. (Optional: par-cook in microwave first.) Add water and cover with a dome for 4-5 minutes.
• Add chopped cabbage to griddle. Then add chopped bell pepper, onion, and sliced squash. Season with salt and pepper and mix veggies together.
• Move veggies and cabbage to one side. Turn center burners to high.
• Add sliced kielbasa to hot section and sear. Season ribeye steak with Heifer Dust, add oil, then sear steak on hot zone. Cook 3-4 minutes per side then remove and chop.
• Mix sausage with veggies and cabbage. Add corn and pickled jalapeños to griddle and heat through.
• Combine everything: potatoes, steak, corn, and veggie mixture. Add Worcestershire and Italian dressing, stir well.
• Plate and serve hot – this one goes fast!

5. Kielbasa & Cheese Tortellini Skillet

A low-effort midweek hit featuring cheese tortellini, kielbasa, bell peppers, and Italian dressing. Comforting, cheesy, and perfect for leftovers. 

Ingredients (serves 4):

• 2 packages kielbasa, sliced
• 2 bell peppers & 1 onion, sliced
• Oil
• 19-oz frozen cheese tortellini
• ½ cup water
• ~¼ cup Italian dressing
• Parmesan for topping

Instructions:

• Heat griddle medium-high, oil, cook kielbasa & veggies ~5 min.
• On other side, add tortellini, splash water, cover with dome ~4-6 min till tender.
• Toss tortellini with sausage & veggies, drizzle Italian dressing, stir.
• Serve sprinkled with Parmesan.

As I watched my 7 year-old bounce off the walls for the third time this morning, I realized something had to give. The endless “I’m bored” complaints, the gravitational pull toward their iPads, and my own regret for not signing them up for summer camp, were weighing on me. That’s when I discovered the magic of creating a DIY obstacle course for kids right in our own backyard (and living room).

If you’re like me and want to get your children moving without breaking the bank on expensive gym classes or equipment, you’re in the right place. Building obstacle courses at home has become our family’s secret weapon against endless energy, and I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned along the way.

Why Build a DIY Obstacle Course for Kids?

When I first started researching summer camp activities for kids that we could do at home, I hadn’t even considered obstacle courses. Sure, I knew they’d tire out my kids, but the advantages go so much deeper than just burning energy.

The physical benefits alone are worth it:

• They help improve balance 
• The coordination required to navigate different stations works muscle groups that normal playground equipment often misses
• The varied movements help build overall strength in a way that feels like play rather than exercise

But what really surprised me were the mental/emotional benefits:

• Watching my kids problem-solve their way through challenges has been pretty cool to see
• Seeing their confidence grow as they master new obstacles
• Witnessing their determination when they don’t succeed on the first try
• They’re learning persistence and resilience without even realizing it

The cost savings compared to sports classes or gym memberships make this even better. Most of what you need is probably already sitting in your garage or can be purchased inexpensively.

Planning Your DIY Obstacle Course for Kids

Before diving into construction mode, I learned that a little planning goes a long way. My first attempt was a chaotic mess that wasn’t fun for anyone (oops). 

Start by assessing your space: Do you have a backyard, or will you primarily be working indoors? I’m lucky to have both options, but I know plenty of parents who create amazing obstacle courses in apartments.

Age considerations matter more than I initially thought:

• What works for my eight-year-old definitely doesn’t work for my four-year-old neighbor
• Younger kids need lower obstacles, wider paths, and simpler challenges
• Older children crave complexity and competition
• I always plan with my youngest participant in mind, then add optional difficulty boosters for the bigger kids

Safety became my number one priority after we had a little injury:

• I always do a walkthrough before letting the kids loose
• I check for sharp edges, unstable surfaces, and potential collision points

Bonus tip: involve your kids in the planning process. They come up with the most creative ideas, and they’re way more invested when they feel ownership over the course design.

Essential Equipment and Materials

You probably already own more obstacle course materials than you realize. My most successful courses have used household items in creative ways:

• Pool noodles are absolute gold. I bought a pack of foam pool noodles and use them for everything: hurdles to jump over, tunnels to crawl under when bent into arches, and balance challenges when laid flat on the ground. They’re soft, colorful, and incredibly versatile.
• Hula hoops serve multiple purposes in our courses. Kids can jump through them, use them as targets for bean bag tosses, or step through them in sequence. I keep several different sizes on hand.
• Jump ropes work for traditional jumping, but I also lay them on the ground to create paths kids must follow or boundaries they can’t cross.
• For marking stations and creating boundaries, I rely on cones or markers. The bright colors help kids understand the course layout immediately.
• Yoga mats have become essential for any indoor setup. They provide cushioning for rolls and crawling sections while protecting both kids and floors.
• I invested in some resistance bands after seeing how much my kids enjoyed the stretchy challenge element. They’re perfect for creating “spider webs” to navigate through.
• Small hurdles or an agility ladder add professional-looking challenges without the professional price tag. My kids feel like real athletes when they’re stepping through ladder rungs.
• A good stopwatch or timer turns any obstacle course into an exciting challenge. Kids love trying to beat their previous times.
• For younger children, portable tunnels are fantastic. They’re collapsible for storage and provide that fun enclosed crawling experience kids crave.
• Instead of balance beams, I use 2×4 lumber pieces or even just strips of tape on the ground for balance challenges.
• For outdoor courses, outdoor chalk and sidewalk paint let kids help design and mark their own courses.
• Storage bins are crucial for keeping everything organized and easily accessible. Nothing kills the motivation to set up an obstacle course like spending twenty minutes hunting for equipment.

Indoor DIY Obstacle Course Ideas

Winter afternoons and rainy days don’t have to mean screen time. Some of our most creative obstacle courses happen inside:

• Living room transformations: I move the coffee table to create an open space, then set up stations around the perimeter. Couch cushions become stepping stones. The space between the couch and wall becomes a crawling tunnel. Pool noodles taped to chairs create limbo bars or hurdles to step over.
• Hallway challenges: The hallway is perfect for straight-line activities. I lay out yoga mats end-to-end for bear crawls, set up cones for weaving, and use painter’s tape to create balance lines kids must walk.
• Basement or playroom setups: If you have a basement or dedicated playroom, you can leave semi-permanent setups that kids can use whenever they want. 
• Apartment-friendly options: Apartment dwellers shouldn’t feel left out. I know families who create amazing courses using just their living room space. The key is vertical thinking and multi-purpose obstacles. A single hula hoop can be jumped through, used for arm circles, and laid flat for stepping inside.

Additional Tips for a Successful Obstacle Course

• Layout first: I start by laying out the entire course before setting up any individual stations. I walk the path myself, checking for logical progression and identifying potential bottlenecks where kids might bunch up.
• Add clear visual markers: Each station gets a clear visual marker. Numbered cones help kids understand the sequence. Arrows made with chalk or tape eliminate confusion about direction.
• Use a timing system: Add excitement without requiring expensive equipment. For younger kids, I simply count out loud or play energetic music. Older children love the precision of actual stopwatch timing.
• Make the difficulty scalable: Making courses scalable for different skill levels keeps everyone engaged. I create multiple options at challenging stations. Kids can crawl under the pool noodle hurdle, step over it, or jump over it based on their ability and confidence.

Troubleshooting Common Challenges

Even the best-planned obstacle courses hit snags. Here’s how I handle the most common issues.

When kids lose interest, it’s usually because the challenge level is wrong. Too easy becomes boring quickly. Too hard leads to frustration and giving up. I adjust difficulty by changing rules rather than rebuilding stations. “This time, do it while balancing a bean bag on your head” instantly increases difficulty.

Difficulty level adjustments need to happen in real-time. I watch for signs of struggle or boredom and make modifications immediately. Adding or removing steps, changing time limits, or introducing handicaps keeps everyone appropriately challenged.
