In a recent episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth sat down with author and Caltech professor Cindy Weinstein for a deeply personal and moving conversation about Alzheimer’s, caregiving, language, and the enduring power of human connection. Together, they explored what happens when memory and communication begin to fade, and how families can continue to connect even when words no longer come easily.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s

Weinstein shared the story behind her book, Finding the Right Words, which was inspired by her father Jerry’s battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s. She explained that her father was later understood to have the logopenic variant of Alzheimer’s, a rare form of the disease that impacts language centers in the brain.

“Language was one of the first things that my dad lost,” Weinstein said.

She described her father as outgoing, generous, and deeply social, someone who loved conversation, sports, singing, and connecting with people. Watching him gradually lose the ability to communicate became one of the most painful parts of the disease for their family.

The Power of Connection Beyond Words

One of the most powerful themes throughout the episode was the idea that connection does not disappear when words become harder to find.

Weinstein reflected on learning to communicate with her father through touch, hugs, presence, and simply showing up. She also discussed how much more is understood today about dementia care compared to when her father was diagnosed in the 1980s.

“We didn’t know what we didn’t know,” Roth said.

The conversation highlighted the growing understanding of music, art, gardening, and other nonverbal therapies that can help people living with dementia reconnect with memory and emotion. Weinstein noted that music can often awaken parts of the brain even after language abilities have declined.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Beyond Memory Loss

Throughout the discussion, Roth and Weinstein emphasized that Alzheimer’s is about far more than forgetting names or memories.

Weinstein explained that through her collaboration with renowned neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller at UCSF, she gained a deeper understanding of how dementia can affect mood, behavior, spatial awareness, personality, and communication.

“It gave me words to understand what was happening,” Weinstein said.

Roth also discussed the importance of education and support for families navigating a diagnosis, noting that many caregivers experience fear, denial, and isolation after receiving life-changing news.

Compassionate Caregiving Matters

Another major focus of the conversation centered on how caregivers can better support loved ones living with dementia.

Weinstein encouraged caregivers to stop “beating themselves up” and instead recognize that they are doing the best they can.

The discussion also emphasized the importance of validating emotions rather than correcting or dismissing someone experiencing confusion. Roth and Weinstein explained that meeting individuals where they are emotionally can help preserve dignity and reduce distress.

“We should include them whether they can process it or not,” Roth said, discussing the importance of involving individuals with dementia in conversations about their care.

A Conversation Rooted in Love

At its core, this episode was about far more than Alzheimer’s. It was about grief, resilience, humanity, and enduring love.

When asked what she would say if she could have one more conversation with her father, Weinstein’s answer was simple and emotional:

“I love you,” she said. “Obviously, I love you.”

The conversation serves as a reminder that caregiving is not simply about managing symptoms. It is about preserving connection, honoring dignity, and finding meaning even during life’s most difficult chapters.

Listen to the full episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You to hear more from Cindy Weinstein about caregiving, Alzheimer’s, and the lessons she learned through her father’s journey.

David Schweikert, who is running for governor of Arizona, for a wide-ranging and candid conversation about the future of healthcare, the economics behind it, and the innovations that could reshape how we age and receive care.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A System Under Pressure

Schweikert did not mince words when describing the current state of healthcare in the United States.

“We’re at the inflection point,” he said. “In six to six and a half years, the Medicare Part A trust fund is empty. That is scary.”

He pointed to demographic shifts as a primary driver, noting that the number of Americans over 65 has doubled over the past two decades while the younger population has remained flat.

“The spending increase is almost solely driven by demographics and healthcare inflation,” he explained.

For Schweikert, the challenge is clear: the system is not built for the reality we are entering.

From Sick Care to Health Care

One of the most striking themes in the conversation was Schweikert’s belief that the U.S. healthcare system is focused on the wrong thing.

“We’ve turned healthcare into financial engineering,” he said. “We need to move away from it being a financing debate to a healthcare debate.”

Instead of focusing on insurance structures and payment models, he argues the system should prioritize prevention and healthier living.

He highlighted obesity and chronic disease as key drivers of cost, noting that nearly half of healthcare spending is tied to these conditions.

“What happens when the morality of helping our brothers and sisters be healthy is also great economics?” he asked.

The Power of Innovation

Schweikert is deeply optimistic about the role technology can play in transforming care.

“We live in a time of miracles,” he said. “The drugs, the therapies, the data that’s coming… we can actually remove the waste and make the future work.”

From wearable health devices to AI-driven diagnostics and telehealth, he envisions a system where individuals have more control over their own health data and care decisions.

“The freedom is about to be handed to us, if we can just embrace the technology,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of allowing innovation to happen at the state level, where new ideas can be tested more quickly.

“The experiments are going to happen at the state level,” he added.

Rethinking Healthcare Economics

Throughout the discussion, Schweikert returned to one core issue: waste.

He cited billions of dollars lost annually to inefficiencies like duplicative testing and administrative complexity.

“The adoption of the innovation is the cure,” he said.

He also stressed the need to rethink incentives across the system, particularly in programs like Medicare Advantage.

“You’ve got to remove those perverse incentives,” he explained. “Make it so they benefit if you benefit.”

For Schweikert, aligning outcomes with incentives is key to creating a sustainable system.

Why the Home Is Central to the Future

Bob Roth brought the conversation back to a core belief shared by Cypress HomeCare Solutions: that the home is the center of care.

Schweikert agreed, pointing to new technologies that make aging in place more viable than ever.

“What happens if you have your own medical lab in your home?” he said, referencing emerging tools that can monitor health conditions in real time.

He described a future where care is more accessible, more personalized, and less dependent on traditional hospital settings.

“There are so many ways we can remove the waste and make it so I can age in place much more gracefully,” he added.

A Vision for Arizona

As he campaigns for governor, Schweikert sees Arizona as uniquely positioned to lead in healthcare innovation.

“Arizona belongs on the cutting edge,” he said.

He envisions a system that embraces experimentation, leverages technology, and prioritizes better outcomes for patients.

“The future of healthcare in Arizona depends on innovation,” he said.

A System Worth Rethinking

What makes this conversation stand out is not just the scale of the challenges discussed, but the willingness to rethink the system entirely.

Schweikert is not simply talking about incremental change. He is calling for a fundamental shift in how we approach healthcare, from prevention to delivery to financing.

“The solutions are complex,” he said. “But there are solutions.”

And at the center of those solutions is a simple idea: helping people live healthier, more independent lives.

Listen to the full episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You to hear more from Rep.
The Missing Link in Healthcare

For Bhatti, the biggest problem in healthcare is not what happens inside the hospital, but what happens after patients leave.

She described the transition from hospital to home as one of the most fragile moments in a patient’s journey, where confusion, lack of support, and missed details can quickly lead to complications or readmission.

“We’re sending people home with stacks of papers and expecting them to figure it out,” she explained.

Her solution: bring highly trained nurses directly into the home to guide patients through recovery, ensuring they have the support, clarity, and care they need during those critical first days.

A Model Built From Experience

Bhatti’s vision was shaped by her own experience as a family caregiver.

After helping care for her grandmother, she saw firsthand how overwhelming it can be for families to manage complex medical needs without proper support. That experience ultimately led her to leave bedside nursing and build a company designed to fill that gap.

Today, Navi Nurses provides one-on-one care in the home, helping patients navigate everything from medication management to follow-up care and recovery planning.

Supporting the Unsung Heroes

One of the most powerful themes in the conversation was the role of family caregivers.

Bhatti emphasized that while families are often expected to take on medical responsibilities, they are rarely prepared for the emotional and physical toll it can take.

“We sign up to be family members, not nurses,” she said, highlighting the need for professional support to allow families to focus on simply being present for their loved ones.

By stepping in during critical moments, Navi Nurses helps reduce that burden while improving outcomes for both patients and caregivers.

Reimagining Nursing

Bhatti is also changing what it means to be a nurse.

Her model gives nurses the opportunity to work one-on-one with patients, offering more flexibility, autonomy, and meaningful connection than traditional hospital roles.

The result is not only better care for patients, but also reduced burnout and a renewed sense of purpose for nurses.

“Nurses want to make a difference,” she said. “This allows them to do that again.”

Why the Home Is the Future of Care

Throughout the conversation, one message was clear: healthcare is moving into the home.

Patients recover better in familiar environments, and with the right support, many hospital-level services can be delivered safely and effectively outside traditional settings.

Bhatti believes this shift is not just a trend, but a necessary evolution in how care is delivered.

“People thrive best at home,” she said.

The Human Side of Healthcare

Even as technology advances, Bhatti stressed that care remains deeply human.

From holding a patient’s hand to advocating for faster treatment, nurses play a critical role that cannot be replaced by technology.

It is that human connection, she said, that makes the biggest difference during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

A System Worth Rethinking

What makes this conversation stand out is not just the innovation, but the perspective behind it.

Bhatti is not simply building a company. She is challenging the way healthcare is delivered and asking a bigger question: What would care look like if it truly revolved around patients and families?

Her answer starts at home.

In a recent episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth sat down with Jared Langkilde, President and CEO of HonorHealth Foundation, for a wide-ranging conversation about the evolving role of philanthropy in healthcare, the power of innovation, and what it truly means to put patients at the center of care.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

The Difference Between Good and Great Care

For Langkilde, philanthropy is not an add-on to healthcare, it is the defining factor.

He described it as the gap between standard care and something far more meaningful: care that treats patients as human beings, not just cases.

Philanthropy allows healthcare systems to go beyond the basics, funding innovation, supporting patients in vulnerable moments, and creating experiences that feel personal, dignified, and compassionate.

“It is the differentiator,” Langkilde explained, emphasizing that communities with strong philanthropic support consistently deliver higher-quality care.

A System Built on Trust

At its core, the HonorHealth Foundation operates as what Langkilde calls a “facilitator of trust.”

Rather than simply raising money, the foundation connects donors with causes that matter deeply to them, often inspired by personal experiences with care.

These contributions are then directed back into the system to fund programs, research, and patient support services.

“It’s a sacred space,” he said, describing the responsibility of stewarding both financial gifts and the values behind them.

Innovation That Changes Lives

Throughout the conversation, one theme stood out: healthcare is advancing at an unprecedented pace.

From early cancer detection programs to nanotechnology that can train the immune system to fight disease, Langkilde pointed to a future where care is increasingly personalized and proactive.

He shared a powerful example of how philanthropy can directly drive innovation.

After a physician’s daughter benefited from a medical device as a child, that experience later came full circle. Years later, when the device’s inventor became a patient, the physician launched a new early lung cancer detection program in her honor, funded through philanthropy.

The result: a program that could save thousands of lives each year.

Rethinking Access to Care

HonorHealth is also reimagining how and where care is delivered.

One standout example is the “complete care” model, which brings emergency care, urgent care, and primary care together in one location.

Patients no longer have to decide where to go or wait for appointments. They can walk in and receive the level of care they need immediately.

“It’s about putting the patient at the center,” Langkilde said, noting that the model reduces costs, improves outcomes, and simplifies the experience.

The Human Side of Healthcare

Despite the rapid advancement of technology, Langkilde emphasized that healthcare remains fundamentally human.

He shared stories of physicians going above and beyond for patients, including one team that brought a patient’s horse to the hospital to give her the motivation to complete life-saving treatment.

These moments, he said, reflect a deeper philosophy: healthcare should be personal, compassionate, and rooted in dignity.

“It’s about treating people like human beings, especially when they are at their most vulnerable.”

The Future: Talent, Technology, and Community

Looking ahead, Langkilde sees healthcare being shaped by a combination of talent, technology, and community support.

A new partnership with Arizona State University will help train the next generation of physicians, combining medicine with engineering to prepare for a more innovative future. At the same time, advancements in artificial intelligence and predictive care are making it possible to intervene earlier and improve outcomes.

But none of it happens without community support. Philanthropy continues to be the engine that makes progress possible, especially in areas where traditional funding falls short.

A Model Worth Watching

What makes this conversation stand out is not just the scale of innovation, but the philosophy behind it.

HonorHealth is not trying to be the biggest system. It is focused on being the best, with an emphasis on quality, personalization, and patient experience.

And as Langkilde made clear, that mission depends on something deeply human: people helping people.

Because in the end, philanthropy in healthcare is not just about funding programs.

It is about creating a system where better care is possible for everyone.

Listen to the full episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You to hear more from Jared Langkilde on how philanthropy is transforming healthcare.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A Broken System, and a New Approach

For Van Horssen, the idea behind InherisAI started with a deeply personal experience.

After watching a loved one struggle to find appropriate care for a child facing serious emotional trauma, he came face to face with a system that simply wasn’t working.

“I watched just how hard it was… to find the right therapist to deal with such a crushing problem,” he said.

That experience led to a broader realization: the behavioral health system isn’t lacking compassion or ideas, it’s lacking funding and access.

“There’s not enough money going in,” Van Horssen explained. “Government’s not going to fix the problem… and insurance companies struggle with covering behavioral health care.”

The Funding Gap No One Talks About

For Kramer, a licensed clinical social worker who has spent his career in both public and private behavioral health systems, that gap is all too familiar.

“There’s not a shortage of great ideas or really compassionate people,” he said. “But there’s a fits and starts of funding.”

Programs launch, show promise, and then disappear when funding dries up. Meanwhile, demand continues to grow.

Even more striking: many providers are leaving insurance networks altogether.

“We see 35% of behavioral health providers in the country today are cash-only providers,” Kramer noted.

The result? Even people with insurance often can’t access care.

“Coverage isn’t access,” he said.

Why AI Isn’t Replacing Therapists, It’s Powering Access

Despite the company’s name, InherisAI isn’t trying to replace therapists with technology.

In fact, it’s doing the opposite.

“We’re doing nothing even remotely close to that,” Kramer said. “We’re helping people get access to human care of their choice.”

Instead, AI is used behind the scenes to solve a different problem: speed and scale.

Traditional philanthropy, while generous, is often slow and inefficient. InherisAI uses AI to process requests, match funding, and move money quickly, something that would otherwise require thousands of people.

“The part of the work that AI will do is really the part that only AI could do, and that is speed,” Kramer said.

A New Model: “Pure Philanthropy”

At the center of the model is something the team calls “pure philanthropy.”

Every dollar donated goes directly to funding care, no overhead taken out.

“That was a requirement for me,” Van Horssen said.

Patients who qualify receive funds directly, often through a digital payment system, allowing them to choose their own provider—whether in-network, out-of-network, or cash-pay.

It’s a major shift from traditional systems that limit choice.

“We believe people can make the best decision about what kind of care they need,” Van Horssen said.

Rebuilding Human Connection in Care

While technology powers the system, the mission is deeply human.

Roth emphasized the importance of preserving connection in a world increasingly driven by automation.

“We’re humans. We need to be relational,” he said. “We need somebody that really knows us.”

That philosophy resonated strongly with Crockett, whose background in healthcare philanthropy helped her immediately see the potential.

“This represents a total transformation in philanthropy,” she said. “How donors experience giving, and how impact is experienced by the people receiving it.”

Breaking Down Barriers—and Stigma

Beyond cost and access, stigma remains one of the biggest barriers in mental health care.

As Kramer pointed out, the numbers are staggering:

“About 60% of people with a diagnosed condition never get any care… and that number rises to 70% among seniors.”

InherisAI aims to lower that barrier by making the process simple, fast, and private—without requiring deep disclosure of personal health details.

“If you’re climbing over the stigma to say ‘I need help,’ that’s already a big step,” Kramer said.

A Model That Could Go Beyond Mental Health

While the focus today is behavioral health, the long-term vision is even broader.

From cancer care to rare diseases, the gap between need and affordability continues to grow.

“We think this is really going to transform philanthropy,” Van Horssen said.

A Conversation Worth Having

What makes this conversation stand out is its clarity.

The problem isn’t new. The need isn’t unclear.

But the approach, combining AI, philanthropy, and patient choice, offers a new way forward.

Because for millions of people, the barrier to care isn’t willingness.

It’s access.

And as this episode makes clear, solving that gap could change everything.

Listen to the full episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You to hear more from the InherisAI team on how they’re rethinking mental health care access.

In a recent episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth sat down with Attorney Caleb Lihn and licensed social worker Jenny Krulewich of the Peoria, Arizona–based Lihn Law Group for a conversation that went far beyond legal paperwork.

At its core, the discussion was about something much bigger: how families prepare for life’s most difficult moments, and what happens when they don’t.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

From Personal Crisis to Professional Purpose

For Caleb Lihn, elder law is deeply personal.

Before launching his firm, he was working in a traditional legal role when life changed quickly. His mother began experiencing dementia, while his youngest daughter faced serious medical complications at birth.

“I’m a lawyer, but I don’t know how to provide support to my own family. What good is that?” he recalled thinking at the time.

That moment reshaped his career.

Since then, Lihn has focused exclusively on helping families navigate those same challenges, with a clear goal: “If someone connects with us that was in my shoes… they don’t have to feel those same feelings of overwhelm or doubt that I did.”

A More Holistic Way to Help Families

That mission is also what led Lihn Law Group to expand beyond traditional legal services.

Jenny Krulewich, a licensed social worker and client care advocate, helps bridge the gap between legal planning and real-life care needs.

“Our life care planning offers people a holistic approach, blending together legal advocacy, care planning, and care coordination,” she explained.

Her work includes everything from in-home assessments to helping families navigate long-term care and Medicaid planning. It’s about meeting people where they are—often in moments of stress or uncertainty.

“I’ve always really had a passion to help other families who are struggling,” Krulewich said, reflecting on her own experience watching her grandparents navigate dementia. “Being able to support others going through similar situations really fills my cup.”

The Biggest Mistake: Waiting Too Long

If there’s one message Lihn emphasized, it’s that most families wait too long to plan.

“That’s the biggest thing,” he said. “Waiting too long, trying to take shortcuts… we see a lot of mistakes come that way.”

In many cases, those delays lead to unnecessary legal battles or complicated court processes that could have been avoided.

“We can look at a lot of these cases and say this could have been resolved, or eliminated, had there been proper planning,” he added.

The Biggest Mistake: Waiting Too Long

If there’s one message Lihn emphasized, it’s that most families wait too long to plan.

“That’s the biggest thing,” he said. “Waiting too long, trying to take shortcuts… we see a lot of mistakes come that way.”

Those delays can lead to costly legal battles, unnecessary stress, and outcomes families never intended.

“We can look at a lot of these cases and say this could have been resolved, or eliminated, had there been proper planning,” he added.

Why a Will Isn’t Enough

One of the most common misconceptions is that a will covers everything.

“A will is wonderful for saying, ‘This is what I want to happen to my things when I’m gone,’” Lihn explained. “That’s all it is. It’s an instruction manual.”

But it doesn’t avoid probate or provide protection while someone is still living, two critical gaps that often catch families off guard.

Creating a Roadmap for the Hardest Moments

At its core, planning is about making decisions before a crisis forces them.

“All you’re doing is saying, ‘If I’m ever unable to make these decisions, here’s who I trust to do that for me,’” Lihn said, referring to powers of attorney and advance directives.

“You kind of put that on a shelf, hope it’s never needed—but if that situation comes up, you want to have it.”

And beyond the legal mechanics, the impact is deeply personal.

“It’s an incredible gift to your loved ones,” he added. “You’re giving them a roadmap.”

Bringing the “Circle of Care” Together

That same philosophy extends beyond the firm’s day-to-day work.

Lihn Law Group recently launched its Elder Care and Legal Symposium, an annual event designed not for clients, but for the professionals who support them. The 2026 symposium will take place Thursday, April 16, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Glendale Civic Center in Glendale, Arizona.

“I call it the circle of care,” Lihn said. “We’re all in this sort of circle together.”

The symposium brings together providers across the aging services space, from attorneys and care managers to home care professionals and clinicians. ,for a full day of shared learning and collaboration.

“It’s about providing more holistic support and resources to those of us who provide care to older adults and their families,” he explained.

The idea was born out of a gap Lihn saw firsthand: while professionals often work side by side, they rarely train or learn together.

“Everything is in a silo,” he said. “You work in your home care silo, we work in our law firm silo… and there’s not a lot of cross-training.”

The symposium aims to change that.

“There’s nothing like it,” Lihn added. “How about we all meet together once a year?”

By creating space for collaboration, the goal is simple: better-informed providers, stronger partnerships, and ultimately better outcomes for families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments.

A Conversation Worth Having

What makes this episode resonate is its honesty.

Aging, illness, and caregiving are not easy topics, but avoiding them doesn’t make them go away.

Instead, as this conversation makes clear, planning ahead can transform uncertainty into clarity, and stress into peace of mind.

Because when the unexpected happens, the families who are best prepared aren’t the ones with the most resources.

They’re the ones who took the time to plan.

Listen to the full episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You to hear more from Attorney Caleb Lihn and licensed social worker Jenny Krulewich on elder law, life care planning, and how families can better prepare for the unexpected.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A Life Built on Discipline and Curiosity

Dr. Bailie’s approach to health didn’t start in medical school. It began much earlier.

“I decided orthopedics when I was like seventh grade,” he shares, describing how an early injury and exposure to a family friend in the field sparked his interest. But beyond career choice, his commitment to health became a lifelong discipline.

“Everything is centered around, do I have access to a place to work out?” Bailie explains. “If I don’t, my family knows, stay away.”

That consistency, built over decades, reflects a central theme of the episode: long-term health is not accidental. It’s intentional.

Why Strength Training Is Non-Negotiable

A major focus of the conversation is the importance of strength, especially as we age.

“As you get older… you have to do high resistance training,” Bailie says. “If you’re not doing heavy lifting three days a week, you will dissolve your muscle away.”

He emphasizes that many people get this wrong, opting for lighter weights or more cardio instead of building true strength. But according to Bailie, that approach can accelerate decline rather than prevent it.

“Older people tend to lift light and frequent. That doesn’t do anything,” he explains. “You need to lift heavy.”

This loss of muscle mass, known as sarcopenia, is one of the biggest drivers of falls, injury, and long-term health complications, particularly in older adults.

Injury Prevention Starts Before the Injury

Drawing from decades in orthopedics and sports medicine, Bailie underscores a simple but often overlooked truth: prevention matters more than treatment.

“You can’t go run a marathon without training,” he says. “So why would you expect your body to handle heavy lifting or intense activity without preparation?”

He points to trends like CrossFit and pickleball, noting that while both offer benefits, they also come with risks. especially for those who jump in without building a foundation.

“A lot of people… have found something they can do that is exhilarating,” he says. “But they’re not ready for it.”

Instead, he encourages consistent “maintenance work,” particularly for vulnerable joints like the shoulders, which he calls “the most complex” in the body.

Rethinking Nutrition and Longevity

The conversation also challenges common assumptions about diet and longevity.

Bailie reflects on how his own understanding has evolved over time, particularly after studying global “Blue Zones,” regions where people live significantly longer, healthier lives.

“The only thing I recommend to my patients is… stay away from anybody who’s selling a product,” he says. “Nothing substitutes for organic whole foods. Period.”

He notes that many of the longest-living populations rely primarily on plant-based diets, limited processed foods, and consistent daily movement.

But perhaps most importantly, he emphasizes that health is not static.

“You have to constantly do homework because things change,” Bailie says. “You have to stay informed.”

A Personal Health Journey That Changed Everything

One of the most powerful moments in the episode comes when Dr. Bailie opens up about his own prostate cancer diagnosis.

Despite being in peak physical condition, he discovered the disease through routine monitoring.

“I had zero symptoms,” he explains. “I just checked my PSA.”

What followed was a journey that pushed him to rethink everything—from treatment approaches to nutrition and lifestyle.

“I talked to 11 different doctors in nine countries,” Bailie shares. “They all had a little different philosophy.”

That experience reinforced his belief in combining traditional and alternative approaches, rather than choosing one over the other.

“There’s a place for everything,” he says. “You have to learn about both.”

The Mental Side of Health

Beyond the physical, Bailie also speaks candidly about the emotional toll of a diagnosis like cancer.

“It messes you up mentally,” he admits. “I had nightmares like crazy.”

His wife, Amy, played a critical role in helping him maintain perspective, reminding him to step back from the constant research and focus on living in the present.

That balance, between vigilance and peace of mind. is something many listeners will relate to.

Taking Control of Your Health

Throughout the episode, one message comes through clearly: health is not something to outsource.

“You have to take responsibility,” Bailie says.

From strength training and nutrition to proactive screenings and education, the responsibility ultimately lies with each individual.

And while the path may not always be straightforward, the tools are available.

“It’s easier to take control yourself,” he explains. “But you need compliance.”

A Conversation That Goes Beyond Medicine

What makes this episode especially compelling is that it’s not just about orthopedics or even healthcare. It’s about mindset, discipline, and the choices we make every day.

Dr. Bailie’s story is a reminder that even the healthiest individuals face challenges—and that resilience is built through preparation, knowledge, and support.

It’s also a powerful call to action: to move more, learn more, and take a more active role in your own well-being.

Listen to the full episode to hear more from Dr. David Bailie on strength, longevity, and navigating health at every stage of life.

In this episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth welcomes his longtime friend and healthcare leader Dave Totaro for a thoughtful conversation about relationships, reinvention, advocacy, and the power of timing.

Together, they reflect on Dave’s remarkable career journey, from his early days in marketing and corporate leadership to his influential role in home care advocacy, and discuss how relationships, trust, and a willingness to embrace opportunity helped shape every chapter along the way.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A Life Shaped by Relationships and Opportunity

Dave Totaro’s story begins just outside Philadelphia, where he grew up with his identical twin brother, Sam. Their bond has remained strong over the years, even through periods of competition and distance, and Dave reflects on how that relationship helped shape his understanding of connection, identity, and family.

From there, his path led him to Dickinson College, then to the Wharton School, and eventually into a career that would span marketing, healthcare, government affairs, and advocacy.

One of the most defining moments of Dave’s life came early on, when a random moment during Army Reserve training introduced him to Mark Baiada. Standing side by side in line at Fort Knox, the two struck up a conversation that would become a lifelong friendship and professional relationship.

That chance meeting became one of the clearest examples in Dave’s life of how timing, luck, and relationships can shape everything that follows.

A Career Built Across Many Chapters

Throughout the episode, Dave shares how his professional life never followed a single straight line. Instead, it unfolded across industries and cities, with each chapter building on the last.

He held senior marketing roles in financial services and at Caesars Entertainment, where he served as the company’s first chief marketing officer and helped shape major projects during Las Vegas’ explosive growth era. He also worked at Avon and in the pharmaceutical industry before eventually finding his way into healthcare.

Rather than seeing those shifts as detours, Dave describes them as proof that meaningful careers can evolve over time.

He encourages younger professionals not to feel pressured to map out every step too early, but instead to stay open to opportunities as they arise. His own career reflects that philosophy, showing how skills can transfer across industries when paired with curiosity, adaptability, and strong relationships.

Returning Full Circle at BAYADA

A major focus of the conversation is Dave’s long tenure at BAYADA, where he joined in 2009 as the company’s first chief marketing officer.

For Dave, returning to work alongside Mark Baiada was more than a career move. It was a full-circle moment rooted in trust, shared values, and years of staying connected.

He played a key role in helping lead the company’s brand evolution from BAYADA Nurses to BAYADA Home Health Care, reflecting the broader scope of services the organization had grown to provide.

But not long after joining, Dave stepped into an even larger mission: building out BAYADA’s advocacy and government affairs efforts at a time when the company recognized that one of its most important stakeholders was the government.

That realization became the foundation for a major strategic shift.

Why Advocacy Matters in Home Care

Bob and Dave spend much of the episode discussing the importance of advocacy in the home care industry and why having a seat at the table matters so much.

Dave explains that when he began building BAYADA’s government affairs function, the company was investing heavily in something that would take time to show results. It required leadership support, patience, and confidence that relationships built over time would eventually create meaningful impact.

That investment paid off.

Over the years, BAYADA developed a three-pronged advocacy model built around direct lobbying, grassroots engagement, and public awareness. Dave helped create an ambassador program that equipped employees across the company to become informed advocates in their own communities and with lawmakers in their home districts.

Later, that work expanded even further with the addition of a dedicated social media and public relations effort inside government affairs, helping raise awareness not only about BAYADA, but about the broader value and needs of home care.

The conversation makes clear that advocacy is not simply about policy. It is about protecting access, elevating the needs of older adults and families, and ensuring the home care industry is represented in the decisions that shape its future.

Building Hearts for Home Care

One of Dave’s proudest accomplishments is helping launch Hearts for Home Care, a national advocacy network designed to engage more people in supporting home care issues.

What began as an idea to broaden awareness has grown into a national movement, with thousands of members across all 50 states. The goal was to create a stronger collective voice, not just among providers, but among families, caregivers, and others who understand the importance of care at home.

For Dave, Hearts for Home Care represents the power of combining mission with organization. It also reflects a central theme of the episode: real change happens when people come together around a shared purpose.

Leadership, Legacy, and What Comes Next

As Dave reflects on winding down his time at BAYADA, he speaks with gratitude about the leaders, mentors, and colleagues who shaped his experience in the home care field.

He credits Mark BAYADA as one of the most influential people in his life and says the experience taught him not only how to lead, but how to listen, build trust, and stay committed to something bigger than himself.

At the same time, Dave makes clear that this is not the end of the road.

He has now joined Liberty Partners Group, where he is continuing his work in public affairs and advocacy, particularly as Medicare and Medicaid issues remain front and center in the years ahead. He is also consulting with CareEasy, an AI-enhanced platform designed to better match caregivers with those who need care.

Even in this next chapter, the throughline remains the same: relationships, strategy, communication, and a desire to help move the industry forward.

A Conversation About More Than Career

What makes this episode especially compelling is that it is not just about professional milestones. It is also about what gives a life meaning.

In a rapid-fire closing segment, Dave shares the values that still guide him today: compassion, reliability, accessibility, curiosity, and gratitude. He reflects on the importance of speaking up, staying connected, and enjoying every single day.

The conversation feels personal, honest, and grounded in mutual respect, which makes sense given the long friendship between Bob and Dave. Their shared background in marketing, leadership, and home care gives the episode both warmth and depth.

Continuing the Work of Advocacy and Care

This episode of Health Futures offers a powerful look at a career shaped by courage, adaptability, and connection. Dave Totaro’s story is a reminder that no experience is wasted, that relationships matter, and that meaningful work often grows from the people we meet and the opportunities we choose to pursue.

It is also a timely conversation for anyone in healthcare, home care, or advocacy who is thinking about leadership, legacy, and the future of care.

Listen to the full conversation to hear how Dave Totaro’s journey through marketing, advocacy, and home care continues to shape the industry and the people within it.

In this episode of Health Futures: Taking Stock in You, host Bob Roth welcomes back Scott Fischer, Founder and CEO at Options for Senior Living, for a thoughtful conversation about aging, senior living decisions, caregiving, and the importance of helping families navigate one of life’s most emotional transitions.

Together, they explore how families can better prepare for aging, why waiting until a crisis makes everything harder, and what it takes to bring more professionalism, ethics, and compassion to the senior placement industry.

For the full episode, CLICK HERE
Audacy | Apple | Spotify

A Career Rooted in Care and Advocacy

Scott Fischer shares how his career began in nursing and behavioral health before leading him into senior living placement more than two decades ago. That clinical background shaped the way he works with families today, helping him approach each situation with empathy, structure, and a deeper understanding of the emotional and practical challenges families face.

“What helped me stand out initially was that in nursing school, they pound a concept into your head called the nursing process,” Fischer explains. “You assess, evaluate, create a plan, and then continue evaluating and adjusting.”

That mindset became the foundation for how he guides families through complicated decisions about care, safety, finances, and housing for aging loved ones.

Senior Living Is About Guidance, Not Just Placement

During the conversation, Fischer emphasizes that helping families navigate senior living is about far more than simply finding an available community.

“I really saw my role as a guide or navigator for families, not just a broker,” Fischer says.

Choosing the right environment requires understanding a family’s financial situation, long-term care needs, medical considerations, and emotional readiness for change. Fischer explains that thoughtful planning helps families avoid multiple disruptive moves and instead focus on finding a sustainable solution from the start.

Why Planning Early Matters

One of the central themes of the episode is the importance of having conversations about aging long before a crisis occurs.

Bob and Scott discuss how many families are shocked when they learn the true cost of care. Assisted living, memory care, and home care services can quickly add up, making planning essential for both financial stability and peace of mind.

“We’ve got to get the message upstream sooner,” Fischer says. “We need to normalize these conversations with families so they can plan ahead instead of reacting during a crisis.”

Starting those discussions earlier allows families to explore options, prepare financially, and make decisions together rather than under pressure.

Raising Professional Standards in Senior Placement

Fischer also reflects on his efforts to bring greater structure and professionalism to the senior placement industry.

Over the years, he helped organize professional associations and certification programs designed to establish best practices, transparency, and accountability within the field.

“My emphasis has always been that we cannot stop talking about why best practices are important,” Fischer says.

He encourages families seeking help to ask questions about an advisor’s credentials, professional affiliations, insurance coverage, and transparency around how placement services are compensated.

For families navigating vulnerable moments, trust and professionalism are essential.

The Emotional Reality of Aging and Caregiving

The episode also touches on the deeply personal side of aging and caregiving. Even professionals who work in the field every day face emotional challenges when helping their own parents navigate aging.

Bob and Scott reflect on those experiences and how they deepen empathy for the families they serve.

“It’s those moments when families realize someone understands what they’re going through,” Fischer says. “That’s what makes the work meaningful.”

Helping families feel supported during uncertain times is often just as important as providing practical guidance.

Educating the Next Generation of Advisors

In addition to running Options for Senior Living, Fischer recently launched Options University, an education program designed to train aspiring senior living advisors across the country.

The program provides foundational training, mentorship, and ongoing support for professionals entering the field, helping ensure that more families have access to knowledgeable and ethical guidance.

By sharing lessons from more than two decades in the industry, Fischer hopes to continue raising standards and helping families receive the compassionate support they deserve.

Supporting Families Through Every Stage of Aging

This episode of Health Futures offers an insightful look at the complex decisions families face as loved ones age. Through professional expertise and personal experience, Bob Roth and Scott Fischer highlight the importance of planning, education, and compassionate guidance.

The message is clear: when families have the right support and information, navigating the aging journey becomes far less overwhelming.
