We are committed to addressing their challenges and improving the systems they depend on to deliver service to our clients,” Asiedu said.

The forum was designed as a working session with agents interacting openly with executives, sharing operational feedback, and receiving on-the-spot responses to several queries on liquidity, transactions and service reliability.

Telecel Cash’s Business Development Manager, Foster Asare, briefed agents on banking partnerships and provided training on fraud prevention and cybersecurity practices. He stressed that protecting agents from fraud is central to sustaining their livelihoods.

“As we expand partnerships with banks and deepen our digital offerings, we must also protect the people who make the system work, which includes our agent network. Security and trust are essential to improving our agent’s income and wellbeing as well as customer confidence,” Asare added.

Agents also received detailed briefings on the Telecel Loyalty Promotion mechanics and upcoming product offerings designed to increase transaction volumes and improve earning margins.

Philip Osei Marfo, the Zonal Sales Manager, said "Our agents understand the customers better than anyone because they interface with them every day. Through this forum, we are equipping them with relevant product information and ensuring that the challenges they face in the field are addressed and resolved quickly.”

The response from agents was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the forum as one of the most direct and practical engagements they have had with the telco. Several participants urged Telecel to institutionalise the forum as a regular engagement platform.

Market traders at Kejetia, who witnessed parts of the engagement, welcomed the decision to bring the telco’s leadership into the marketplace, saying it reflected a more responsive approach to agent relations and strengthened their confidence in the business.

The Telecel Cash Agent Forum reinforced the role of partner-agents as critical drivers of financial inclusion across Ghana’s informal economy, where mobile money services remain a key bridge between banking systems and everyday transactions.

Telecel Ghana said the cash agent forum at the Kejetia Market Square forms part of its broader Ashanti Month 2026 programme this June, which combines business engagement, headlining the Asantehene Golf Open Golf Tournament, community health and digital skills training initiatives and customer appreciation activities across the region.

Telecel engages Deaf graduands on digital career pathways

<div class="separator" Through its SuperCare initiative, the telco has been building partnerships with tertiary institutions where sign language is taught, helping to introduce students to careers and create pathways for talent recruitment into the telecommunications industry.

The Telecel Play App includes accessibility features that enable persons with disabilities to access digital content and services through an intuitive smartphone experience. For customers without smartphones, the SuperCare quick code (*494#) provides an accessible alternative for support and service access.

During the 2025 International Week of the Deaf in Saltpond, Telecel Ghana advocated for the mainstreaming of sign language in schools and public service delivery, highlighting its importance in improving access to healthcare, education and employment for Deaf persons.

Through the Telecel Ghana Foundation, Deaf students participate annually in STEM and digital skills training during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, where they are introduced to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. These initiatives reflect Telecel's broader commitment to embedding accessibility and inclusion into its digital transformation agenda.

According to Ghana's 2021 Population and Housing Census, more than 211,000 Ghanaians are Deaf or hard of hearing, while over 470,000 people live with varying degrees of hearing loss.

South African Stars Share Powerful Youth Day Messages To Inspire Youth To Dream Bigger

As South Africa commemorates Youth Day and honours the courage and sacrifice of the class of 1976, some of the country’s most recognisable personalities are encouraging young people to embrace their individuality, pursue their dreams and remember that meaningful change often begins with small, everyday actions.

Zanele Potelwa (Radio personality and Tropika Island Of Treasure host): "Make Space for Your Gift."

Potelwa encourages young people to treat their talents with professional intent. “If I could give words of wisdom to the young people out there, it would be make space for your gift,” says Potelwa. “When I say make space for your gift, I mean give it your all.

Every opportunity that comes your way, even the small ones that you get to create for yourself, be it one video, be it starting a small tuck shop, be it offering a service to a friend or family or whatever it may be, or someone actually giving you a big opportunity, make space for your gift by working hard, allowing yourself to grow and staying curious,” the Tropika Island Of Treasure host continues.

“Everything we need is within us. All we’ve got to do is trust God, keep pushing and allow the best version of ourselves to win.”

DJ Ankletap (Jacaranda FM radio host): "Your Journey is Yours Alone."

For Jacaranda FM personality DJ Ankletap, one of the most important lessons young people can learn is that comparison can often rob them of their own unique path. “If there's one thing I want young people to remember, it's that the journey of your life doesn't have to look like anyone else's,” he says. “It's your own life, so don't be afraid to take different paths and don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Mistakes are important. You'll learn from them. The radio DJ adds “The world will test you and people will always have opinions about who you should be, but your greatest superpower is being authentically yourself. Happy Youth Day and keep chasing your dreams.”

Kriya Gangiah (Media personality, broadcaster and businesswoman): "Every Step Forward Matters."

Kriya Gangiah believes progress is rarely built overnight and that young South Africans should never underestimate the impact of small actions. “As we honour the young people who came before us and fought for a better future, we are reminded that progress is built one step at a time,” she says. “To the youth of South Africa: keep believing in yourself, keep chasing your goals and never underestimate the power of your voice.

Every idea, every effort and every step forward matters.” She adds, “Change doesn’t always happen in giant leaps. Sometimes it starts with showing up, choosing to keep going, helping someone else, speaking up for what you believe in or refusing to give up on your dreams.”

Bolele Polisa (Radio personality): "Don’t Lose Your Fire."

Radio personality Bolele Polisa says today's struggles may look different to those faced by the youth of 1976, but the need for courage and conviction remains unchanged. “If there's one thing that I've noticed about some youth members, it's that we're losing the fire,” she says. “The fire within is literally the difference that brings our dreams to life.

The struggle continues. It may take a different face from what it was in 1976, but it continues and it needs us to reignite the fire within. The fire within is what is going to help us stand up for what is right. It is what will help us recognise what is possible for us and ultimately bring our dreams to life.”

Sandile Mahlangu (Actor): "Reflect, Celebrate, and Lead."

Sandile Mahlangu encourages young people to reflect on the significance of Youth Day and the legacy left behind by previous generations. “I want to wish a happy Youth Day to the entire youth of South Africa,” the Tropika Island of Treasure contestant says. “Take some time to reflect on this day and the youth of 1976 who shaped the landscape of South Africa for the better. I want you to know that you have the potential to do the same. You are the ones who can change the country for the better as we move forward. Celebrate this day because it is a powerful one.”

Jonathan Boynton-Lee (Actor and presenter): "Authenticity is Your Greatest Strength."

Actor, television presenter and media personality Jonathan Boynton-Lee believes young people should spend less time trying to blend in and more time embracing the qualities that make them unique. “Don’t spend your youth trying to fit in,” the Top Billing presenter says. “Spend it discovering what makes you different and turning that into your strength. The world rewards authenticity far more than conformity.” Boynton-Lee believes individuality should be celebrated rather than hidden.

“In a world where social media often encourages comparison, there can be pressure to follow the crowd or become a version of yourself that others expect. But some of the most successful and fulfilled people are those who have embraced what makes them different and used it as a source of confidence and creativity. Authenticity isn't something to be afraid of, it's often your greatest advantage. The things that set you apart today may very well become the qualities that define your success tomorrow.”

These messages serve as a timely reminder that South Africa’s youth are not only inheritors of a hard-won legacy but also architects of the nation’s future. By nurturing their gifts, embracing authenticity, taking consistent steps, and keeping their inner fire alive, young South Africans are encouraged to overcome obstacles and create meaningful impact.

Never Miss A Match! A premier voice on the world stage, Diawara has spent years redefining contemporary music by carrying Mali’s Mandinka traditions into a global sound rooted in wisdom, resilience and social change.

Her journey spans film, theatre and music, from early work in Mali’s film space and time as a backing vocalist for her mentor, Oumou Sangaré, to a career marked by striking collaborations with Damon Albarn, Gorillaz, Disclosure and the Lamomali collective, which drew 450,000 spectators in France last year. Across projects, she has continued to evolve without losing the advice-giving spirit of her Wassoulou heritage.

In 2026, Fatoumata returns with MASSA, her most personal work to date. Set for release on June 5, 2026, the introspective solo album is co-produced by French pop icon and guitar hero -M- and balances her life as an international star with her role as a mother. Through songs of wisdom and resilience, she addresses modern societal challenges while inviting listeners to find beauty and gratitude in their own destinies.

By blending her deep Mandinka roots with vibrant pop textures, Fatoumata delivers a forward-looking sound that continues to expand the possibilities of African music. She is also making history in 2026 as the first Black woman to launch a signature guitar with Gibson Epiphone, further cementing her status as a trailblazing force for a new generation of musicians.

Spotify’s EQUAL Africa programme continues to spotlight women redefining the continent’s music narrative, and Fatoumata’s selection underscores her enduring influence. Through her releases, performances, collaborations and barrier-breaking achievements, she embodies how contemporary African artists are reshaping sound and culture on their own terms.

“Fatoumata’s music reflects the creativity and drive that have helped shape Africa’s current music scene,” says Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa. “As part of Spotify’s EQUAL programme, she represents how African women are advancing visibility, driving opportunities, and building global connections through their art.”

We caught up with Fatoumata to explore her creative journey, her inspirations, and the soulful energy that is ever-present in her music.

Quote/Q&As

1. What is that one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?

If I wasn't a singer, I think I would have loved to be a babysitter. I love children and I have always felt a special connection with them. Children are honest, spontaneous, and full of imagination. Being around them brings me joy and reminds me to stay curious and open-hearted.

2. When did you realise that making music was in your destiny and what is your WHY for pursuing this craft?

When I was very young, I experienced the loss of my sister. It was a painful moment in my life, and I remember feeling alone with my sadness. Instead of crying, I started singing. Music became a way for me to express emotions that I couldn't put into words. It transformed my pain into something beautiful. It was like turning rain into sunshine.

That was the moment I realised music was my destiny. It became my way of surviving trauma, healing wounds, and finding hope. Music continues to heal me today.

3. Which African songs or artists did you grow up listening to?

I grew up listening to incredible artists who shaped my musical identity, including Amadou & Mariam, Fela Kuti, Ali Farka Touré, Kassav', and Miriam Makeba. Each of them brought something unique to my understanding of music.

4. To someone who has never heard your music, how would you describe the sound, tone, and style?

My music is a melting pot of influences. At its heart, it is rooted in Mali, but it also embraces blues, folk, rock, jazz, and modern sounds from around the world. I like to build bridges between tradition and modernity. My songs carry the rhythms and stories of my culture while remaining open to new sounds and ideas. The result is a musical journey that is both deeply African and universally human.

5. Any advice for someone dreading following their dreams?

Never doubt yourself. There is a hidden power inside each of us, a strength that often comes from our ancestors, our history, and our life experiences. Sometimes we don't see it right away, but through hard work and perseverance, we discover it.

Believe in yourself even when nobody else does. Don't let fear stop you from taking the first step. Fear is natural, but it should never be stronger than your dreams. Trust your intuition, stay focused, and keep moving forward. The power you are looking for is already within you.

6. How do you navigate the music space as a woman artist and how does your unique perspective shape your artistry?

For me, everything starts with listening to myself. As women, we often have clear ideas, strong instincts, and creative visions, but sometimes we hesitate to share them. I have learned that it is important to trust my voice and communicate my ideas with confidence.

I believe we already carry many of the answers within us. The challenge is learning to listen. When I trust myself and stay connected to who I am, it becomes easier to navigate the industry and stay true to my artistic vision. My perspective as a woman shapes my music because I write from lived experiences, emotions, and stories that are deeply personal but also universal.

7. A quote from you about your experience navigating the male-dominated world of music and what being a part of the EQUAL programme means to you.

"The day I picked up a guitar, I already felt equal. The guitar became my weapon, my freedom, and my voice."

I encourage every young woman artist to learn an instrument if she has the opportunity. It gives you independence and confidence. In a male-dominated industry, communication is also essential. You must express your ideas clearly, stand by your decisions, and never doubt your value.

Being part of the EQUAL programme is meaningful because it helps amplify women's voices and creates more opportunities for future generations of female artists. Equality is not about asking for permission to be heard; it is about recognising your own power and using it fearlessly. Freedom is a tool, and every woman deserves to have access to it.

THE F WORD Premiers on Pluzz FM

The newly introduced radio programme The F Word has officially premiered on Pluzz FM, adding a fresh conversational segment to the station’s entertainment lineup.

The show is hosted by Lerny Lomotey and is designed as a discussion-driven platform focusing on lifestyle, relationships, and social realities affecting young women.

The programme is structured around topical conversations that bring together guests from creative, media, and entertainment backgrounds to engage in open dialogue on issues that shape modern relationships and personal decision-making.

It is positioned as a space where differing perspectives are explored through informal but structured discussions. width="240" />
The global spotlight is set to shine on Ghanaian actress,
filmmaker, and producer Juliet Ibrahim as her short film Behind A Lie
prepares for a special screening in Cannes, marking an important moment
not only for her career but also for African women in film and
storytelling.

The announcement comes at a symbolic time
for Juliet Ibrahim, who is also celebrating 20 years in film in 2026. In
a recent social media post, the actress shared her excitement about
taking the project to Cannes, revealing that she both directed and
produced the short film under Juliet Ibrahim Studios.

The
screening is expected to take place alongside activities connected to
the Nigerian International Film & TV Summit (NIFSUMMIT), bringing
together creatives, filmmakers, executives, and media professionals from
different parts of the world.

For many African creatives, Cannes
represents more than just a glamorous destination. The Cannes Film
Festival remains one of the most influential film platforms globally,
often shaping conversations around cinema, storytelling, funding, and
international collaborations. Having Behind A Lie screened within that
environment signals growing visibility for African independent films and
especially female-led productions from the continent.

What makes
this moment even more significant is the involvement of WIFT Ghana,
which is using the Cannes moment as part of its global launch and
visibility push. Organizations like WIFT Ghana are increasingly
important in Africa’s creative ecosystem because they create
opportunities, mentorship, visibility, and support systems for women
working across film and television industries that have historically
been male-dominated.

Across Africa, conversations around women in
film have become louder over the last decade. Female directors,
producers, screenwriters, and cinematographers are gradually gaining
more recognition, but challenges around funding, distribution,
representation, and leadership opportunities still remain.

According
to UNESCO reports on gender representation in film industries globally,
women remain underrepresented in directing and technical roles despite
growing participation rates. Moments like this therefore become
important because they push African women-led storytelling into
international spaces where deals, partnerships, and long-term
opportunities are often created.

Juliet Ibrahim’s journey also
reflects the evolving nature of African entertainment itself. Over the
years, she has built a career that cuts across acting, directing,
producing, and entrepreneurship, becoming one of the recognizable names
within West African cinema. Her decision to direct and produce Behind A
Lie herself suggests a growing movement among African creatives who are
taking ownership of their narratives rather than waiting for outside
validation.

The film’s screening in Cannes also speaks to a
larger trend happening across African cinema today. More African stories
are traveling internationally through streaming platforms, festivals,
and global partnerships. In recent years, films and projects from
Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and other African countries have
increasingly gained international attention, proving that audiences
around the world are interested in stories rooted in African realities
and perspectives.

Beyond the screening itself, the networking and
cocktail events hosted around the showcase are expected to create room
for collaboration between African filmmakers and global industry
players. These gatherings may seem social on the surface, but they often
become spaces where funding conversations, distribution agreements,
co-productions, and future partnerships begin.

Carol Ofori On How The Radio Industry Has Changed In The Last Two Decades And Why Reinvention Is Key To Staying Relevant

Few voices in South African broadcasting have evolved alongside

evolution firsthand. Her journey not only mirrors the broader shifts
within radio, but also highlights the resilience and adaptability
required to build a lasting career in broadcasting.

“Breaking
into radio 20 years ago was a completely different game,” Ofori
explains. “There was no social media, no LinkedIn, no easy way to
showcase your talent. You had to do your homework, find out who the
programme managers were, and then figure out how to get their attention.
It took persistence, creativity, and a lot of guts.”

In the
early 2000s, aspiring radio personalities relied on demo tapes and CDs,
often going to great lengths to ensure their work stood out. Programme
managers acted as the ultimate gatekeepers, and getting a foot in the
door required not just talent, but ingenuity. As Ofori recalls, crafting
a memorable introduction or concept could make all the difference in
being noticed.

Today, the barriers to entry have shifted
dramatically. Social media platforms have democratised access to
audiences, allowing emerging talent to build their own platforms and
showcase their abilities without waiting for traditional approval. While
this has opened doors for a new generation of broadcasters, it has also
introduced new challenges, particularly for seasoned professionals
navigating an increasingly digital-first world.

“Now, anyone can
create content and put themselves out there,” says Ofori. “That’s
incredibly exciting, but it also means the space is more competitive
than ever. For those of us who’ve been in the industry for a long time,
it’s about learning, adapting, and finding ways to merge what we know
with how things are done now.”

Ofori is a strong advocate for
embracing change rather than resisting it. She believes the future of
radio lies in blending traditional broadcasting skills with modern
platforms, creating a more dynamic and multi-dimensional media presence.
It’s an approach she actively embodies, maintaining an engaged presence
across social media while continuing to build her on-air legacy.

Her
perspective positions her as a leading voice in South African radio,
not just because of her longevity, but because of her willingness to
evolve. In an industry where relevance is constantly being redefined,
Ofori’s career stands as proof that adaptability is just as important as
talent.

As radio continues to transform in the digital age, one
thing remains clear: the power of authentic storytelling and human
connection endures. For broadcasters like Carol Ofori who have
successfully navigated both the old and new worlds of media, the future
is less about keeping up and more about leading the way.

What The Animal Kingdom Can Teach Us This Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, the Lion & Safari Park is celebrating the fiercest, most devoted and instinct-driven mothers in nature, because in the wild, motherhood is anything but ordinary.

The animal kingdom offers incredible examples of how mothers nurture, protect and raise their young. While every journey looks different, that same thread of love, strength and sacrifice runs through them all.

The Lioness

Lionesses are the ultimate team players when it comes to motherhood. Living and hunting in prides, they raise their cubs together: nursing, protecting and even disciplining one another’s young. This shared approach creates a powerful support system, where no cub is ever truly alone.

In the wild, lionesses will go to great lengths to protect their young from threats, often putting themselves in danger to ensure the survival of the pride. It’s a striking example of community-driven motherhood where strength lies in unity.

The Giraffe

Giraffe mothers bring a quieter, but no less remarkable, kind of strength to motherhood. After giving birth standing up, meaning calves enter the world with quite a dramatic first drop, mothers are quick to help their young find their feet, often within minutes.

Despite their gentle nature, giraffe moms are fiercely protective, using their powerful kicks to defend calves from predators. In the early days, calves may even be left hidden while their mothers feed nearby, returning regularly to nurse and check on them.

What makes giraffe motherhood so striking is this balance of calm and strength – a steady, watchful presence that gives their young the space and support to grow safely in a vast and often unpredictable environment.

The Hyena

Hyenas offer one of the most fascinating and misunderstood examples of motherhood in the wild. Female hyenas are dominant within their clans, leading complex social groups where hierarchy is everything.

Mothers are fiercely protective and highly strategic, raising their cubs in communal dens while teaching them how to navigate the clan’s social structure. It’s a world where intelligence, strength and resilience determine survival and where mothers sit firmly at the top.

While all animals parent differently, one thing is for certain: the wild offers powerful reflections of motherhood in all its forms.

Tropika Unveils Bold New Ginger Beer Flavour In Collaboration With Dr Esther Mahlangu

Tropika is shaking up its signature flavour line-up with the launch of its new limited-edition flavour: Ginger Beer. A nostalgic, warming twist made for South African winters, Tropika is stepping beyond its traditional fruity profile to deliver a bold, yet familiar, taste that resonates deeply with South African consumers.

Ginger Beer was carefully chosen for its strong cultural connection to local taste preferences. Known for its ability to warm the throat and evoke comforting, familiar experiences, the new flavour brings something unexpected yet authentically South African to Tropika’s portfolio. It aligns with the brand’s ongoing innovation strategy of introducing fresh, exciting flavours that offer a clear point of difference while keeping Tropika relevant and dynamic for consumers.

To bring the launch to life, Tropika has partnered with one of South Africa’s most iconic artists, Dr Esther Mahlangu. The renowned Ndebele painter’s bold, geometric artistry features prominently on the packaging, transforming each pack into a vibrant canvas that celebrates South African heritage, creativity, and pride. A living legend born in 1935 in Mpumalanga, Dr Mahlangu has spent over seven decades shaping contemporary art and sharing South African culture with the world.

This collaboration celebrates Dr Mahlangu’s extraordinary legacy as a cultural ambassador who continues to inspire generations through her work and her dedication to passing on traditional skills. It also reflects a shared vision between Tropika and Dr Mahlangu: evolving with pride while remaining deeply rooted in South African stories and communities. While the legendary artist continues to influence the world through her groundbreaking work, Tropika remains committed to evolving as a brand that resonates culturally.

“Partnering with the legendary Dr Esther Mahlangu for our Ginger Beer launch is a true honour and a perfect embodiment of what Tropika stands for,” says Miantha Roux, Head of Beverages at Clover. “This flavour takes us in a new direction. It’s bold, but still deeply familiar. Dr Mahlangu’s artistry brings a sense of pride, heritage and storytelling that goes far beyond the pack.

There’s a real warmth to this launch, not just in the flavour, but in what it represents. We hope this new flavour inspires Mzansi to embrace the unexpected, challenge the norm, and proudly celebrate their own individuality, just as Tropika keeps evolving while staying true to its roots and delivering that signature smoooth taste we all love.”

Tropika Ginger Beer is now available at retailers across the country. As a limited-edition release featuring the exclusive Dr. Esther Mahlangu design, it is expected to be in high demand. As a millennial, I grew up in a time with no internet, then dial-up, and now fibre, all within my lifetime. My kids, on the other hand, have been born into a world of instant, high-speed connectivity.

We’re a unique generation because we learned how to play outside and regulate our emotions without screens. Now, everything is immediate, and devices are constantly in children’s hands, which can easily lead to overexposure and dependency. It means I have to be very intentional about screen time, about encouraging outdoor play, and about how we parent.

It’s not always safe for kids to play outside the way we used to, so we’re constantly navigating a new way of raising children that fits the times we live in.

What practical rules or boundaries have you put in place at home when it comes to tech and social media?

My kids are not on social media, they’re still too young. We do, however, have strict screen time rules. There are no screens from Monday to Friday, and access only starts on Friday afternoons. Each child gets a maximum of two hours per day across all devices, which totals about six hours over the weekend. We’re quite firm about this, and we encourage reading, interactive play and spending time outdoors instead.

At what age do you think it’s appropriate for children to start engaging with social media or digital platforms and how do you navigate that as a parent?

This is a tough one. I’m only now realising that platforms like WhatsApp are also forms of social media. My son turns 11 soon, and while his cousins are on WhatsApp, he’s not on platforms like Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. I think it really depends on the child and their level of maturity, but personally, I would say 15 and older is more appropriate for full access to platforms like Instagram or TikTok, and even then, with strict boundaries.

That includes private accounts, content filtering and monitoring who they engage with. It’s scary, because that space can be toxic. At some point, though, you have to gradually let go, but with guidance and safeguards in place.

How do you balance protecting your child from the pressures of social media while still allowing them to be part of their generation’s reality?

The balance is the hardest part. It comes down to open and honest conversations. When issues come up, for example, safety concerns around platforms like Roblox, it’s important to talk to your children about the risks and explain why certain rules are in place. The more informed they are, the better decisions they can make, especially when you’re not around. Social media is evolving so quickly, and we’re all still learning. But consistent communication and empowering children to think critically is key.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve personally faced when it comes to screen time and digital exposure and how do you manage your own habits?

It’s tough, because my work is digital. My kids often laugh at me for always being on my phone, but it’s how I stay relevant and informed in my industry. For me, it comes down to intention. When we’re on holiday, I try to disconnect and be fully present. Even during local breaks, like over Easter, I make a conscious effort to put my phone down and spend quality time with my family. It’s about being aware of the moment you’re in and choosing to be present in it.

What advice would you give to other parents who feel overwhelmed navigating this digital landscape?

Start with yourself. Look at your own screen habits and where you can improve. It’s very difficult to tell your children to cut down on screen time if you’re constantly on your phone. Lead by example, that’s the most powerful tool you have. When you model healthy behaviour, it becomes much easier for your children to follow.

As technology continues to evolve, so too does the role of parents. For Ofori, the key lies in staying informed, setting clear boundaries and, above all, remaining intentional. In a world where screens are unavoidable, raising balanced, aware and resilient children may be one of the most important challenges modern parents face and one that requires learning, adapting and growing every step of the way.

Medikal Declares Himself Artiste of the Year 2025 After TGMA Nominations

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Medikal has confidently declared himself the rightful Artiste of the Year for 2025 following the release of nominations for the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

The rapper made the bold declaration during a live performance at Kumawu on Saturday night, where he paused mid-set to address fans about the nominations.

“You know they released the nominations for the TGMA and the Artiste of the Year category,” he told the crowd. “You know Medikal has been working extremely harder than everyone every year. Let’s tell the organizers that this year, no libilibi, no labala.”

The statement was met with loud cheers from fans who echoed his confidence and support.

This year, Medikal stands among the most nominated artistes at the awards, securing over eight nominations, a reflection of what many fans describe as one of the most active and impactful years of his career.

He received nominations in the following categories:

Music Video of the Year

Rap Performance of the Year

Hiplife/Hip-Hop Artiste of the platform, celebrating excellence across the industry.

Supporters of the rapper argue that his consistency, hit releases, performances across the country, and strong fan engagement make a compelling case for him to win the night’s top prize.

With nominations spanning multiple major categories and a strong presence in the Ghanaian music scene throughout the year, Medikal’s campaign for the Artiste of the Year crown is already gaining momentum among fans and industry observers alike.

As anticipation builds toward the awards night, Medikal’s declaration has added a new layer of excitement to the race for the coveted title.

The Board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards has introduced a Swing Period policy to ensure that outstanding songs released late in the year receive fair consideration within the awards scheme.

The policy, implemented in the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, allows songs released in December to be considered in the following awards year, provided they meet strict eligibility conditions.

To qualify, a song must:

Have been released in Decemberof the eligibility year

Have demonstrated measurable impact within the year under review

Not have received a nominationin the previous edition of the awards

According to the TGMA Board, the decision follows three years of engagement with industry stakeholders and reflects the Awards’ commitment to ensuring that impactful songs are not disadvantaged by release timing.

Under the newly introduced policy, two songs have earned nominations in the 27th TGMA:

Messiahby Sarkodie featuring Kweku Flick

Excellentby Kojo following their release, demonstrating the very scenario the Swing Period was designed to address.

The TGMA Board believes this policy strengthens the Awards’ mission to recognize excellence, reflect industry realities, and celebrate the full impact of Ghanaian music.

As the music industry continues to evolve—with changing release cycles, digital consumption patterns, and global audience dynamics—the Telecel Ghana Music Awards remains committed to refining its processes in ways that protect credibility while ensuring deserving works receive recognized.

In March 2021 when Akwaaba Magic launched, few could have predicted the magnitude of its impact on Ghana’s creative economy. In just five years, the channel has not only excited a struggling film ecosystem but has reshaped the cultural landscape, re energised local storytellers, and redefined what Ghanaian television can be.

What we have witnessed is not merely growth it is a creative renaissance powered by intentional investment, trust in local talent, and an unwavering commitment to authentic Ghanaian narratives.

A Lifeline to an Industry on the Brink

Before 2021, Ghana’s once vibrant film sector was battling declining platforms, inconsistent financing, and limited opportunities for distribution. Filmmakers like Shirley Frimpong Manso and Leila Djansi continued to create, but the industry lacked the dedicated, well funded exhibition platform needed to sustain large scale production.

Akwaaba Magic filled this void. By launching as a 100% Ghanaian content channel on DStv and GOtv, it provided a consistent, premium home where Ghanaian creators could display their work to national and continental audiences.

The channel did not simply air shows; it rebuilt an entire value chain. In the words of celebrated Ghanaian producer Ivan Quarsigah, “Akwaaba Magic has become the single most important television platform sustaining Ghanaian film and TV in the last five years,” commissioning over two hundred projects and injecting millions of cedis into productions, cast, crew, vendors, and local talent.

Bringing back the love for Ghanaian content through series like Dede, To Have And To Hold, House of Klu, Queen of Akra, Accra Medic, Tanko Villa, RSM and unearthing talents like, Afia Odo, Dela Seade (Nuna), Anthony Woode (Inspector Bediako), Adoma (Dede) to mention a few.

In a rejoinder published widely in Ghana during MultiChoice Ghana’s regulatory challenges in 2025 an anonymous producer attested to the immense impact the channel had had on the landscape. “Over 750 Ghanaian cast and crew engaged at a time on a single Akwaaba Magic project; numbers unheard of in the free to air ecosystem, where per episode rates can be as low as 6% of Akwaaba Magic’s.”

Authentic Storytelling as Cultural Power

What sets Akwaaba Magic apart is not only how much it funds but what it chooses to fund. From Nana Akoto, Queen of Akra, Brenya, Dede, RSM, and Sankofa, the channel has intentionally centered stories rooted in Ghanaian history, culture, languages, and everyday lived experiences.

This direction has revived and modernised the Ghanaian storytelling tradition, helping preserve cultural identity while making it accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences. Shows incorporating Twi, Ga, Ewe, Frafra, Dagbani, and Akan have strengthened cultural pride and broadened accessibility. As Akwaaba Magic’s leadership has emphasised, the deliberate use of Ghanaian languages is not just a stylistic choice it is cultural preservation.

In an era where streaming algorithms often flatten cultural nuance, Akwaaba Magic has become a powerful counter force, using television as a cultural memory bank.

Raising the Bar: Professionalism, Quality & Employment

The channel’s commitment to high production values has raised the bar across industry. Filmmakers such as Shirley Frimpong Manso, Peter Sedufia, Julia Apea, and Ivan Quashigah already established within Ghanaian circles have been able to push their craft even further with budgets that allow for cinematic sets, sharp writing rooms, and world class production design.

Actors and crew have benefited immensely. Veteran performers like David Dontoh, Fred Amugi, and Augustine Abbey (Idi Koko) have found a renewed stage, while new talent has emerged through dramas, comedies, reality shows, and historical epics.

This rising professionalism has positioned Ghana as a competitive hub in African storytelling funneling into the National Film Authority’s “Film In Ghana” agenda. Further strengthening regional appeal and boosting the confidence of creators who once felt overshadowed by Nollywood and South African productions.

Economic Impact: Real Money, Real Jobs, Real Growth

Investment figures tell an undeniable story. In the last five years, Akwaaba Magic has channeled over two hundred million Ghana cedis into Ghana’s film ecosystem, stimulating job creation, enhancing production capabilities, and helping expand the country’s creative economy.

This funding has set off a cascading effect improved production quality, increased demand for local crew, better pay for actors, and new skills across cinematography, editing, costume design, and set construction. Broadly, these investments have contributed to the wider industry renaissance noted by filmmakers like Kwabena Gyansah, who credits Akwaaba Magic and DStv’s support for sparking a “complete transformation” of Ghana’s creative landscape.

A Platform Worth Protecting

The channel’s importance has become so undeniable that industry figures now openly warn that losing Akwaaba Magic through regulatory battles or overly punitive policy actions would severely hurt the sector. Actress Gloria Sarfo stated plainly in 2025 that while the industry would survive, it “would be found wanting” without Akwaaba Magic’s stabilising presence.

These concerns reflect a hard truth: Ghana’s film ecosystem is still fragile. Removing its strongest pillar risks unraveling a decade’s worth of progress.

Conclusion: Akwaaba Magic as a Cultural Institution

In five short years, Akwaaba Magic has evolved from a new DStv channel into a cultural institution. It has helped revive an ailing film sector, empowered local storytellers, funded hundreds of productions, preserved linguistic heritage, raised professional standards, and restored national pride in Ghanaian television.

Its story is about what happens when a nation’s narratives are valued financially, culturally, and institutionally. The future of Ghanaian film and TV is bright, but only if we protect and expand the platforms that make this creative flourishing possible. Akwaaba Magic did not just enter the media landscape; it helped transform it.

Relebogile Mabotja Receives SAFTA Nomination

Relebogile Mabotja and GOAT Originals are celebrating a powerful new milestone as Untied, the bold and emotionally resonant Showmax Original that Relebogile Mabotja hosts and is credited as Associate Producer for, has officially received a South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) nomination in the category Best Variety Show.

For Relebogile Mabotja and GOAT, the nomination lands as more than an industry nod. It is a recognition of a project that demanded honesty, sensitivity, and a deep respect for women’s lived experiences.

“Untied was never meant to be noise,” says Relebogile Mabotja. “It was always meant to be truth. To see the show recognised by the SAFTAs in this way, and in a category like Best Variety Show, feels incredibly affirming. Not just for me, but for every woman who trusted us with her story.”

Untied has quickly distinguished itself as one of Showmax’s most daring and emotionally layered originals. It is a space where some of South Africa’s most recognisable women sit down to unpack the reality of divorce, heartbreak, survival, and rebuilding. Across the season, the series invites audiences into raw, often unspoken conversations. It does so not for spectacle, but for healing.

Relebogile Mabotja, long celebrated as one of South Africa’s most respected broadcasters and producers, stepped into Untied as both host and associate producer. Relebogile Mabotja guided each episode with the kind of care and nuance that has defined her career.

“As the host, I had to hold space,” she adds. “But as associate producer, I also carried the responsibility of ensuring these stories were treated with dignity. It mattered to me that the women were not reduced to headlines. It mattered to me that their pain was not packaged. It mattered to me that their truth could breathe.”

The SAFTA nomination marks a significant moment for Untied’s production team, including GOAT, the producers behind some of Showmax’s most-watched titles. The nomination also reinforces Showmax’s growing slate of culturally urgent, conversation-shifting African originals.

“This nomination is a reminder that audiences, and the industry, are ready for stories that are layered,” says Relebogile Mabotja. “Stories that do not tidy women up for comfort. Untied is messy, tender, heartbreaking, and empowering, because healing is all of those things.”

For Relebogile Mabotja, it is also a reminder of why she continues to do this work. It is not only to entertain, but to create television that reflects real life, in all its complexity.

Carol Ofori Champions African Travel After Inspiring Family Adventure In Kenya

Award-winning broadcaster, podcast host, children's book author, and passionate advocate for African exploration, Carol Ofori has built a career, and a life, around storytelling, connection, and wanderlust.

Fresh from a family holiday to Malindi in Kenya, Carol’s passion for African travel shines brighter before. She opens up on why she’s made it her mission to explore as much of Africa as possible and shares some of her favourite memories of visiting the Kenyan city of Malindi.

Travel has clearly been a huge part of your life. How did that love first start for you, and what keeps the fire burning after so many years and so many destinations?

My passion for travel started when my mom gave me the opportunity to see the world as a teenager. We travelled mainly around America and Europe, and those experiences opened my eyes in ways I’ll always be grateful for. Travel exposes you to culture, tolerance, acceptance and constant learning. It’s one of the most beautiful ways to grow as a human being and to develop empathy.

After travelling with my family, I moved out and all I wanted to do was keep exploring. Every December, after seeing so much of the United States and Europe, I told myself I wanted to see more of this continent that I love so much. My first African trip was to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and I was hooked from that moment on.

You’ve visited dozens of countries across Africa and beyond. What is it about travel that still excites you the most?

For me, it’s the learning. I love learning, and visiting a new place allows you to soak up so much knowledge. I enjoy fully immersing myself in experiences because those moments imprint themselves on you. Your travel stories become part of who you are. Through learning, you develop respect for different people and cultures. You begin to appreciate how others live, think and celebrate. That perspective is priceless.

As a mother, how has becoming a parent changed the way you experience and approach travel?

I’ve always wanted my kids to see as much of Africa as possible, but I waited until my youngest was at least five years old.

When they’re very young, travelling can be more challenging, and we wanted them to be old enough to truly experience and absorb what they were seeing. Planning trips now requires a completely different lens. You have to consider distance, travel time and health precautions.

In parts of Africa, malaria can be a concern, so we make sure we’re properly prepared with medication before and during the trip. Safety is also a key factor. One year, we planned to visit Mozambique, but just before we travelled there was unrest in Maputo and we had to adjust our plans. As a parent, flexibility is everything.

You recently took the family to Malindi. What made you choose that destination, and how did it compare to your expectations?

It was actually my second time visiting Malindi, and we absolutely loved it. This time, I visited Gold Beach at Che Shale for the first time. It’s a stretch of coastline famous for its shimmering sand. The “golden” effect is caused by mineral deposits, specifically mica and titanium particles, that are washed down from the interior by the Sabaki River before settling along the shore.

The mix of gold and darker, almost black sparkles in the sand creates the most incredible, glistening effect in the sunlight. It was completely mind-blowing to see in person. We also visited the Vasco da Gama Museum, which was fascinating, snorkelled in the warm Indian Ocean, and explored the dunes on quad bikes.

The city tour was incredibly interesting, and we even went to Hell’s Kitchen, which looked completely different from when I first visited because of erosion. Experiencing it all again, but this time as a mother, was truly eye-opening.

Was there anything about Malindi that surprised even you?

The consistency of the weather! We had hot, 35-degree weather every single day, which is very different from South Africa where conditions change quickly. That consistency meant we could fully enjoy every activity we planned without worrying about sudden shifts in weather.

From a cultural and sensory perspective, what stood out most?

The Maasai culture stood out deeply for me. Watching them perform. the jumping, the singing, the pride in their heritage, was incredibly emotional. They are so proud of who they are. As South Africans, we’re familiar with diverse cultures, but experiencing something different firsthand is always special.

It’s very different from Zulu or Xhosa culture, for example. Their beadwork is extraordinary and unique to East Africa. What made it special is that while we all share beadwork traditions as Africans, we express them differently. The patterns, colours and techniques vary and that diversity is beautiful.

You’ve made it a mission to explore as much of Africa as possible. Why is that so important to you?

Simply put, Africa is the best continent in the world. I may be biased, but I truly believe that. If more Africans travelled within Africa, we would appreciate each other more and collaborate more. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to travel across our own continent due to various barriers.

If we were able to work together more seamlessly, we could all grow together. A thriving Africa means a thriving South Africa. Seeing the potential across the continent motivates me to explore as much of it as I can. There’s so much opportunity here, and we need to collaborate more with our neighbouring countries.

After Malindi, what’s next on your travel list for 2026?

I would love to do another solo trip, but as a mom of two, that’s not always easy! More than anything, I want to continue exploring Africa with my kids. Its renewed dominance is being fueled not by nostalgia alone, but by viral momentum across TikTok, Instagram, and other social platforms.

“Over Again” has become the soundtrack for emotionally driven content, with Gen Z creators and millennials using the record to narrate stories of love, betrayal, heartbreak, and personal healing. From short skits to raw, personal storytelling videos, the song has evolved into a cultural reference point for shared emotional experiences.

The trend has escalated rapidly, attracting top-tier influencers and high-profile digital creators whose participation has amplified the song’s reach nationwide and pushed it deeper into mainstream conversation.

Reacting to the resurgence, Edem described the moment as both affirming and exciting.

“When I created Over Again, I knew the impact it had. I knew how strong the song was back then,” he said. “Seeing it connect again after all these years, especially with a new generation, is very exciting.”

He also encouraged his loyal fan base, the Go-Getters, to continue engaging with the song and sharing their stories through it.

At its core, Over Again tells a story that has proven timeless. The song explores betrayal among friends, romantic relationships disrupted by close associates, and the emotional fallout of trust broken. These themes have resonated strongly in today’s digital storytelling culture, with users relating the lyrics to real-life experiences that remain painfully relevant.

As a result, the song is now widely used to narrate scenarios such as losing a partner to a friend, coping with heartbreak after emotional investment, and rebuilding strength after betrayal. Interestingly, some creators have also flipped the narrative, positioning themselves as the “other person” and using the song to explore accountability, growth, and redemption.

The renewed success of Over Again highlights a broader shift in music consumption. In the digital era, a song’s lifespan is no longer tied to its release window. Social media and streaming platforms have created space for timeless records to resurface, cross generational lines, and regain both cultural and commercial relevance.

With Over Again back in the charts, trending across social media, and dominating national conversations, Edem’s classic serves as a clear reminder: great music doesn’t expire.
