SUNNY KINGSLEY... A True KING

I was greatly dissapointed tonight when I read on various athletic news sites that my favourite player of AEK was being sold to the Ukranian team FC Metalurh Donetsk. I do realise the monetary benefits out of this transfer will be great for my team, however I do feel that it was a grave mistake. Players like Sunny are hard to find, a truly rare diamond.

I was truly lucky to have met Sunny in person. Beyond being a great football player, he also has a great personality. He is very friendly, funny, charming and on top of all that a great dancer!

I just want to wish Sunny the best of luck for the future, both in his personal life and career.

Sunny you will be greatly missed!

I just read on protathlima.com that our players today visited the junior school of "Kathari" in Larnaca to promote anti-racism. What a coincidence !!! Since I wrote the article earlier today condemning the swastika banner (which is a symbol of racism among other things) that Anorthosis fans put up.

The players that attended were Mina, KIngsley, Gonzalez, Tininho, Razic and Pergl. Our players had converstions with the children about racism and the kids seemed very interested in the subject and asked our players various questions. Our captain Constantinos Mina gladly took the role of the translator.

I just wanted to say a big WELL DONE to our players and club for this move. Other clubs should follow this example - but they should perhaps start by educating their own fans first.

Translation:

The C.F.A (Cyprus Football Association) will punish Anorthosi and Omonoia for the serious episodes that occured in the game between them. Omonoia will be punished for putting up banners with political content (ie. the AKEL flag).

My question is why isn't Anorthosi being punished for putting up a banner with the Nazi Swastika (for the second time may I add) ???

For me this is far worse than putting up any kind of (Cypriot) political symbol. Anorthosi fans who put up that banner should be ashamed of themselves. Even more ashamed should be those who tolerate such behaviour, who see these things and not do anything about it.

The swastika is a symbol of the killing of 11-14 million people in World War II. It is the symbol of Nazi Germany led by the fascist dictator Adolf Hitler. It represents the Nazi ideology of "racial hygiene" and the superiority of the Aryan race. The first victims of the "cleansing" were children with mental and physical disabilities. People were killed for their race, religion, sexual orientation and disabilities. These people were put in concentration camps and were gassed to death. Others were slave labourers and died as a result of starvation. IN SHORT IT IS THE SYMBOL OF MURDER!

It is a shame to see such a symbol in the stands of Cypriot stadiums, it is even worse when you see it in the stands of a refugee team...

Back on track AEK 2 - 1 Olympiakos

Saturday's win against Olympiakos has put us back on track to finish in the fourth position also thanks to the losses Apop, Apollon and Paralimni suffered.

Game Summary

12' Hector Gonzalez scored the first goal for our team after a great assist from Jao Paiva.

31' Ferydoon scored for Olympiakos.

39' Sunny Kingsley was fouled by N.Nicolaou in the penalty box. Aldo Adorno failed to score by losing the penalty with a weak shot that landed in the goalkeeper's arms.

42' Dejan Ilic was shown the second yellow card leaving us with 10 players for the rest of the game.

75' Two minutes after Marios Neophytou entered the game substitutuing Adorno, won a foul right outside the penalty box. With a beautiful free kick, the ball curved around the defensive wall and into the net which was ultimately the winning goal for our team.

Basketball : Aspis Apoel 97 - 73 BMC AEK

Unfortunately, our team did not make it tonight to the semifinals of the playoff series. We lost in Nicosia with a 24 point difference, making the games 2 to 1 in favor of Aspis Apoel.

Football: AEK - Olympiakos

Tomorrow at 17:00, our team faces Olympiakos Nicosia at home in the GSZ stadium. The only player absent on our side will be Jose Manuel Rey who is still in Venezuela due to his mother's health problems. Sunny Kingsley was facing a minor injury and will not be expected in the start-up line (he will however be on the bench).

Olympiakos only has 13 points being in the last position in the league. This does not automatically mean that it will be an easy game for us. After the two consecutive losses, the psychological state of our team is not at its best. Tomorrow is our chance to put an end to the series of losses and help regain our confidence back. Hopefully it will put our team back on track and may give us new hopes of finishing in the fourth position.

BASKETBALL: AEK BMC beats Aspis Apoel

With my mind mostly on football I had forgotten to write about our basketball team's important win on Monday. So here's my summary.

AEK beat Apoel 86-79 in the first round of the playoffs (second game). Apoel had won the first game, so a third match is needed now to see who will go to the next round.

The Team's top contributor for the game was Isaac Burton who scored 26 points. Fantousis and Panteli scoring 18 and 16 points respectively also greatly contributed to this very important victory.

Today was our second consecutive defeat. Last week by Apoel at home with a score of 0-3 and today away with Apollon 2-0. I beleive this brings an end to the hope of finishing in the top 4 in the championship. The absence of Jose Manuel Rey, Jao Paiva and Pavel Pergl is no excuse for todays loss. If anyone tried to use this as an excuse is they should be deemed crazy and sent to a mental ward! Apollon played with their "back-up" players due to 10 of their main players being absent for various reasons.

We had a chance to be in the top 4, but we screwed up! We should have taken advantage of Apollon's absences and the fact that the game was played with empty stands without their fanatical supporters (due to Apollon's punishment by the C.F.A).

Apollon was the better team today and won fair and square and could have even scored more goals.

I finally decided to start my own blog after viewing various blogs floating around on the web. I'm a sports fanatic, so naturally I searched for ones related to sports in Cyprus and in particular for football related ones. I stumbled upon some interesting and extremely witty ones that focus on my local football team AEK Kition. Needless to say, I was greatly inspired to begin my own blog.

I decided to mainly write in English in the hope of perhaps "educating" people who have no clue about sports in Cyprus and in particualar my favourite team AEK Kition. Also, another reason being is that I feel more comfortable typing in English rather than in Greek :)

Here's a brief introduction to my team taken from wikipedia.org for those interested :

"AEK Larnaca FC (Greek:Αθλητική Έvωση Κιτίου;Athlitiki Enosi Kitiou) is a Cypriot Sports club, based in the port of Larnaca. The club was formed in 1994 after a merger of two clubs of Larnaca; EPA and Pezoporikos. The clubs has football and basketball section for men and volleyball section for women."

The current president of the team is Thomas Kyriakou and the current coach is Nir Klinger. The colours of the club are green and yellow and their emblem is the famous Athenian general, Kimon, who died at the seafront defending the city of Citium in a major battle with the Persians of Xerxes. He told his officers to keep the news of his death secret. The quote "Και Νεκρος Ενικα" ("Even in death he was victorious") referred to Kimon.
