To ease students’ tuition fee payment process, Eastern Mediterranean University has introduced a new application. In line with an agreement settled with Coop Central Bank and Turkish İş Bank, students will be given the option to pay tuition fees via Virtual POS.

Through the new application, students will be able to submit their tuition fee payments with their existing credit cards via Eastern Mediterranean University’s epay.emu.edu.tr page.

The said application has been made available for the newly registered students who are nationals of third countries other than the TRNC and Turkish Republic as of March. Through the new application, the university aims to overcome problems and difficulties encountered in international money transfers to the TRNC.

Eastern Mediterranean University Computer Center is currently working on the finalisation of the system enabling the students use Virtual POS in tuition fee payments. The said application will be offered to all students of EMU as of the 2016 and 2017 Academic Year.

Do you sometimes wonder who among your WhatsApp contacts actually saved your contact on his or her phone. You wouldn’t know who saved your contact or not even if you decided not to use your picture as profile picture, because by then they could see the previous chats and know you are the one chatting with them.

Today I will be sharing with you, a sure fire way to get those who don’t consider you important enough to save your contact on their phone. It’s actually very simple and straightforward.

This is all you need to do.

First of all, you have to create a broadcast message where you add all your WhatsApp contacts as participants. To create a broadcast message, click on your phone’s menu in the WhatsApp application and click on “New Broadcast”. You will then see an IMPORTANT message that says: “Only contacts with +90533******* (your WhatsApp number) in their address book will receive your broadcast messages”

Then you start selecting all your contacts. Note that there is a limit to the amount of contacts you can include in your broadcast (about 256). So after sending the broadcast , those who received the broadcast(double mark) are the ones that saved your contact on their phone and those who didn’t receive the broadcast(single mark) are those that didn’t save your contact on their phone.

So you can go ahead and ask them why they didn’t save your number or you simply reciprocate their gesture by deleting their number. Whatever you want to do next is up to you. Enjoy!

Meanwhile the USGS said that the earthquake's magnitude was 6.2 and its focal depth was 203 km in Ashkasham area of Afghanistan.

Commenting on the difference of the magnitudes, the DG claimed that the Pakistani met office's reports are more accurate than the USGS as they monitor the whole situation closely and their technology in the region is more developed than the U.S.

No loss of life has been reported yet, but local media reported that cracks appeared in some houses in Kashmir area.

The disaster management authority of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said that they are contacting their sub-offices in various districts to check possible damages caused by the quake.

Important findings have recently been announced by the Laboratory of Developmental and Cell Biology of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus.

According to a relevant announcement, Dr Neophytos Christodoulou´s work shed light on the cellular mechanism responsible for Vertebrate Neural Tube Closure (NTC), a process responsible for the formation of the central nervous system.

These findings were published in the prestigious journal Cell Reports.

The team using high resolution microscopy combined with molecular biosensors showed that Apical Constriction the morphogenetic movement responsible for Neural Tube Closure, is driven by cell autonomous and asynchronous pulsed contractions of an apical actin network.

These contractions are driven by cell autonomous and asynchronous calcium flashes. Furthermore it was shown that the autonomy and asynchrony of contraction are necessary for proper tissue morphogenesis.

The significance of these findings stems from the fact that Neural Tube Defects are one of the most common human birth defects.

As a result, delineation of the mechanism driving Neural Tube Closure will contribute to a better understanding of human Neural Tube Defects, the announcement concludes.

How Are Nigerian Students In Cyprus Going To Survive?

Deposit Money Banks have commenced a process to stop all customers from using their payment cards, popularly known as Automated Teller Machine cards, for dollar-denominated transactions when they travel abroad with effect from January 1, 2016.

SUNDAY PUNCH’s investigation also revealed the banks would not allow their customers to use naira-denominated ATM cards locally for transactions denominated in forex.

This means bank customers will not be able to use their cards to buy products from foreign e-commerce sites like e-bay and amazon.com in which payments are made in forex.

The development follows the lingering scarcity of foreign exchange, especially the dollar, to settle obligations arising from customers’ use of the ATM cards for forex-denominated transactions.

Already, Standard Chartered Bank has notified its customers that from January 1, 2016, they will not be able to use their naira-denominated ATM cards for transactions that are denominated in foreign currencies, either locally or when they travel abroad.

In a notice to its customers, Standard Chartered said, “This is to notify you that from January 1, 2016, your naira card will no longer be enabled for international use. This is as a result of the limited foreign exchange supply in the financial market.”

Asked how long the suspension of cards from international transactions would be, the spokesperson for Standard Chartered Nigeria, Mrs. Dayo Adurogbo, said, “We cannot give a definite date. It depends on how soon it is available. We will do everything to meet our customers’ demand once it is available.”

Further findings showed that a number of other banks had stopped customers from using their ATM cards abroad but had yet to officially communicate this to them.

Some customers told our correspondent that when they notified their banks of plans to travel and the need to enable their cards work overseas, they were simply informed that the cards could not be enabled for now due to issues relating to forex scarcity.

SUNDAY PUNCH findings showed others banks might issue notices similar to that of Standard Chartered Bank before the end of the year.

“We had some discussions recently and some top bank officials said they would stop customers from using their naira-denominated cards for international transactions due to the serious challenges in getting forex to settle their international partners,” a top bank official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said on Friday.

The current situation means customers travelling abroad for Christmas and New Year may face severe payment challenges, a situation that may mar their shopping plans.

The fall in prices of crude oil, the main earner of foreign exchange for Nigeria, has made the nation’s forex income to reduce drastically, creating dollar scarcity crisis for the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN has been rationing dollar to banks, importers and other forex users as the nation’s foreign exchange reserves continue to deplete, hitting $29.4bn on December 7, 2015.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Thursday that banks had cut the amount that their customers could spend using their debit and credit cards abroad by between 70 and 90 per cent. This took effect during the first week of December for the majority of the banks.

Specifically, banks cut customers’ card spending in foreign currencies from the annual $50,000 allowed by the CBN to between $5,000 and $15,000.

According to findings by our correspondent, Ecobank Nigeria Plc has reduced its limit from $50,000 to $5,000, with a maximum of $500 monthly and $100 daily expenditure.

Skye Bank Plc, in a notice to its customers via email, also slashed its international card spending limit from $50,000 to $12,000 annually, a maximum of $1,000 monthly and $100 daily.

Wema Bank Plc also slashed spending on its payment cards from $50,000 to $10,000 annually, $1,000 monthly and $100 daily.

Although other banks have yet to confirm their new international card spending limits, findings by our correspondent revealed that the new limits for most of them ranged from $5,000 to $15,000 annually, and $500 to $1,000 monthly.

TURKISH CYPRIOTS are not happy according to a new survey.

The "Happiness, social insurance and political trust”survey, conducted in September, was compiled by the "center of migration identity and work rights”, reports Kibris.

According to the survey, Turkish Cypriots are not happy due to "past traumas, injustice and partisanship. "

The unhappiest people - all aged between 45-54 - live in occupied Morphou and the happiest live in Trikomo.
Turkish Cypriots trust political parties the least while they trust most the "police”.
Finally, they believe that they have no influence on politics, the developments of the Cyprus problem and the economy.
Ever Wondered Why?

Ever been caught up by the clocks going forward or back... or even wondered why we do it?

As we start to switch our headlights on for the drive home from work our thoughts turn to the twice-yearly ritual of altering our clock in the spring or autumn.

But if you've ever wondered what's behind this tradition, here are a few facts:

British Summer Time (BST) ends on the last Sunday in October and this means you will need to put the clocks back by one hour this Sunday at 4am.

At that point, 4am goes back to being 3am and you will get an extra hour in bed on Sunday.

It takes the UK back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

But the change means that you will notice it get darker earlier in the evenings. The upside is that it's lighter in the mornings.

It's thought to be organised for a Sunday so fewer workers get a ticking off for arriving at work late.

Most of our modern devices, such as mobiles or tablets should update automatically.

But the rationale behind the change is to give us extra daylight when we need it most.

First proposed by William Willett in 1907, British Summer Time - or Daylight Saving Time - was devised to prevent us wasting morning daylight in the summer.

The difference between daylight hours varies hugely throughout the year - from more than 16 hours on the longest day in June to just over seven hours in December.

Mr Willett proposed in a pamphlet to change the nation's clocks - spending the rest of his life trying to convince people his grand plan would work.

Thus, on May 21, 1916 the scheme was born.

But, fear not, it won't feel wintry for ever.

Come next March normality will be restored. The clocks will go forward again on the last Sunday on March at 1am.

And don’t forget…. The clocks go back this Sunday…

The Near East University Hospital realizes another breakthrough in technological health services by investing in picture archiving and communication system (PACS), which is the latest medical imaging technology that provides economical storage of radiological data in a common medium and ensures convenient access to images and the associated reports whenever needed. PACS system also provides physicians with opportunity to increase the success rate and quality of operations by conducting simulated surgery in virtual environment prior the operations.

Talking to the Directorate of Press & Public Relations Office of the Near East University, Prof. Dr. Nail Bulakbaşı, Head of the Department of Radiology of NEU Hospital, delivered information on PACS system.

The delivery of quality healthcare requires systems that deliver performance and reliability under all conditions. To this end, the Near East University with its innovative mission is committed to offering the highest quality health services through the latest and most advanced technology. Fujifilm Synapse PACS system, which is the latest, the most advanced and the most comprehensive Web-based medical imaging system, will be in service at the Near East University Hospital soon. Fujifilm’s Synapse Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) allows the archiving and distribution of vast amounts of image information from all modalities. Synapse Workstation Software provides viewing and manipulation of radiological data including images, reports, patient status and clinical information. It also provides integrations to clinical applications including Radiology Information System (RIS) and three dimensional processing applications. The system enables the preparations of the assessments and reports in a short time by using the temporal (4D) processing and storage features of the images. Regardless the location and time, the physician can access the patient’s data through their tablets, mobile phones, laptops or any other web-based device. Compared to conventional PACS, Fujifilm’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) allows more comprehensive and detailed applications in the field of Neurology; Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Urology and Oncology. These applications encompass colonoscopy and bronchoscopy simulation, stent implantation simulation, catheter insertion simulation and advanced vascular analysis and similar applications in virtual environment.

Preoperative Simulation for Heart Surgeries

Fujifilm Synapse PACS system with its catheter insertion simulation feature enables the cardiologist to conduct cardiac catheterization in a virtual environment in order to detect any possible vascular occlusion and identify the possible complications and take all required measures prior to surgery.

4D Radiological Imaging, Diagnosis and Simulated Surgery via the Latest Technological PACS System Starts at Near East University Hospital
Creating 3D printed Titanium Bone

Due to the 3D processing feature of Fujifilm’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), patient specific three dimensional titanium bone implants can be printed for patients suffering from bone loss.

Simulation Possibility in Tumor Surgery

Especially prior to liver surgery, the exact location of the tumor is detected and all required manipulations with unprecedented accuracy can be simulated in a virtual environment within a short time by means of liver analysis software of the system.

Colonoscopy and bronchoscopy Simulation in Virtual Environment

The system allows the simulation of all tests required for examining the inner lining of the large intestine and the airways and lungs prior to colonoscopy and bronchoscopy procedures.

According to a report in the Cyprus Mail newspaper today, course for casino jobs will be offered by the University of Nicosia.

With Cyprus’ planned new casino allowing up to 200 gaming tables and 2000 slot machines, experts predict more than one thousand jobs will be up for grabs.

Courses offered by the University of Nicosia aim to ensure that when the casino starts hiring, their graduates will be first in line for a job.

“The casino will be open 24/7,” said Yianna Orphanidou who heads the hotel and tourism programmes at the University of Nicosia. “And shifts in this profession are only six hours, so four shifts are going to be covered every day.”

She also explained that many jobs are going to open because there is a strict hierarchy in casino management.

“You need a supervisor for every few tables, security and different people for the slot machines,” she said, adding that she expects that there will be more than 1000 jobs in the new casino.

The university runs two courses. The first, under the vocational training arm of Intercollege, offers training for those who want to work as slot technicians, slot attendants, casino dealers and casino surveillance. Training takes place in a special ‘casino lab’ and it has already produced graduates who have found work in the casino industry abroad.

In addition, an undergraduate programme under the hospitality management branch of the University of Nicosia concentrates on casino management. This also includes 40 hours of practical experience in the lab as managers must have a basic knowledge of gaming.

Invited to a taster training session at the lab which has eight multipurpose tailor-made gaming tables, I was introduced to the dos and don’ts of the casino industry.

The first thing students learn is roulette, as it is considered the most difficult game. I soon found out that there is much more than just spinning the wheel and calling out a winning number.

To spin the wheel, you have got to spin the ball in one direction, and the wheel in the opposite. And you have to do it gently, otherwise you might end up with the ball flying around the room, landing on the floor and you looking extremely unprofessional.

We were then asked to play the game, as the best way to become a professional is to practise.

Croupiers are not allowed to shake people’s hands, so they can’t cheat and hand money to the customers in the process (or vice versa). For much the same reason, they also don’t have pockets in their uniforms. In short, everything is done to avoid cheating, I was told. This is reflected in the lab where everything is above board. The tables have the university logo and even the chips do so that no one is tempted to use them in any casino.

In real casinos, customers have to be 21 and are asked to show an ID at the entrance.

Security cameras are an important part of the outfit, especially in areas where cash is handled.

Iannis Papademetriou, an instructor at the lab, has had 21 years of experience in the profession, including working on a ship with 6,700 passengers. He says one of the most important factors in running a successful casino is team work. If the manager doesn’t work together with his staff nor the staff all work together well, it will create big problems in an environment where so much money is at stake and so many customers are involved.

“General customer service skills are important, such as greeting a customer by their name if possible and to be friendly but not overfriendly,” he said. “When you are behind the table you want the customer to win, because people who win will give you tips.”

He said the starting salary for a trainee dealer wage is €1200, but it is a profession where you can work your way up.

“You have to be professional and have good observation and interpersonal skills as you may need to be tough one moment – barring a customer who doesn’t keep to the rules – and friendly the next when dealing with a very different situation.”

Asked what he did when people lose and start crying, he said that dealers do not get involved.

“Customers know what they are doing, whether they win or lose. It is their money,” he said.

Orphanidou agreed casino staff do rise through the ranks, but said it was not easy to become a manager as you have to gain the trust of the establishment. Managers also have to know all aspects of gaming, hence the practical part of the hotel management programme.

“It is a tough job,” she explained. “You need to be focused, and there is usually a lot of noise in the room. You need mathematical skills and also just the right touch with the customers, firm but friendly.”

She added that people are only allowed to work in a casino if they have a clean criminal record which is thoroughly checked at all times.

At the casino lab in Nicosia, the aim is to equip students with enough knowledge that they can start working in a casino right away.

The training courses focus on three main areas. The first is to become a casino dealer or croupier. A casino dealer needs to know three basic games to get a job: roulette, poker and blackjack. Any other games dealers need to know for particular casino will be taught at the workplace.

Since roulette is the most difficult to learn, 110 hours of the students’ time are spent with this game, and the remaining 100 with blackjack and poker.

There are several types of roulette, there is the French/European kind with one zero on the wheel, and the American with two zeros opposite each other. The programme in Nicosia follows the European format.

As with roulette, there is not just poker, but all its variations such as draw poker, community card poker and stud poker. Of course, to spice things up for players – and to make professional training harder – there are many kinds of blackjack as well.

A second option is to train as a slot technician and slot attendant, which takes about a week of training.

Another possibility is to study casino security and surveillance, as good security staff is vital for a casino. Because of the large amount of cash that is around, the temptation to cheat is high for both staff and patrons. Trained professionals patrol on the ground, and others watch surveillance cameras. Further duties are transporting money and overseeing payments. To get trained for this takes eight days or 70 hours.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has reportedly given the green light for the establishment of a technical committee which will be carrying out the economic harmonization work.

Akinci said that by bringing experts from the EU the aim is the completion of the Turkish Cypriots’ preparations for passing to Euro as soon as possible.

He noted that the preparations aimed at the solution and added that the procedure of the one year long period for Turkish Cypriots passing to the Euro will begin after the agreement is approved in the referendum and within that period the Turkish lira will be in force.

"This is a process. Passing to the Euro and the customs union will constitute the first stage. Afterwards harmonization with the EU in the health, environment and other issues will come to the agenda,” Akinci said.

Noting that during his contacts in Brussels and New York the issues of passing to the Euro and the customs union came onto the agenda, Akinci said that the EU officials have promised to intensify their efforts..

Eastern Mediterranean University Computer Center designed a mobile application program for İos and Android mobile phones. Through the program which displays students’ courses, course notes, timelines and classrooms on a map, EMU has become a pioneering institution creating a mobile portal for students within the universities in TRNC.

Designed by the Director of EMU Computer Center Aytaç Çerkez and developed by Software Group Unit Chair Ahmet Diler, the project will allow students to view their exam calendars, course attendance information and academic and tuition fee-related information as well as campus facilities and social information such as taxi, restaurant and cafe locations and contact numbers.

Students may download the said software from Google Play “EMU – ANDROID” or Apple Store “iEMU” by using their portal username and password. Restaurants, cafes or taxi companies wishing to register to the said program may obtain further information from EMU Computer Center at 630 1264 or 630 2506.

Myth #1 : Introverts don’t like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days.

Myth #2 : Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an Introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don’t interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an Introvert, just start talking. Don’t worry about being polite.

Myth #3 : Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don’t see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so Introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.

Myth #4 : Introverts don’t like people.
On the contrary, Introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you’re in.

Myth #5 : Introverts don’t like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introverts just don’t like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don’t need to be there for long to “get it.” They’re ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for Introverts.

Myth #6 : Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don’t have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic and sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.

Myth #7 : Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don’t follow the crowd. They’d prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don’t make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.

Myth #8 : Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It’s not that they are incapable of paying attention to what is going on around them, it’s just that their inner world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.

Myth #9 : Introverts don’t know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and Extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.

Myth #10 : Introverts can fix themselves and become Extroverts.
A world without Introverts would be a world with few scientists, musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers, doctors, mathematicians, writers, and philosophers. That being said, there are still plenty of techniques an Extrovert can learn in order to interact with Introverts.

This is a warning (especially to anyone who's new in cyprus and is searching for a flat.
There is a student named Ashraf Badour in civil engineering who tricks people who are searching for a new house, he offers you to join him as a roommate in Tuzla for a low price, but once you are in this mess he lives just on you and tries to let you clean and steals money or he borrows without giving back.
I fell into this trick, after i refused to give him money he started fighting and screaming for anything, when i left the house in the middle of a night, i found all my stuff the next day downstairs and outside.
Until now it is just my problem but I found out that he brags about having changed 16 with me 17 roommates in just a 3 or 4 years, he did the same thing he did to me to other people as well.
Different then the others i made a huge scene and so that people(neighbours) saw what happened and helped me bring my stuff in the car. Even the landlord came, I could take most of the money back, but i have to search for a new flat i'm staying actually in a friends house, and have huge damages to my stuff, hardwares with pictures and important dates are broken.
Later i found out that he kept my Passport to use it to his advantage, but i got it back.
I made this mistake, don't make the same and be sure that everywhere you move in, you write a clear contract and sign it, and stand for your right.
I hope that people share this and know about this student and also learn to take the safe way if you wanna move in a house.
Cyprus is a great place, with great people but this can happen here.

Cyprus is marking the 55th anniversary of its independence from British rule with a military parade later.

Cyprus gained its independence in 1960 and a bank holiday marks the occasion.

US President Obama sent the following message: “On behalf of the people of the United States, I am honored to offer my warmest wishes to you and the people of the Republic of Cyprus as you celebrate the 55th anniversary of your country’s independence.”

The Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to President Anastasiades.

In his message President Putin stated the following: “Please accept my sincere wishes on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Cyprus – the Independence Day.

The Russian-Cypriot relations, based on the long-standing traditions of friendship, cultural and spiritual closeness, have been developing in a positive way. This was fully confirmed by the outcomes of our recent meetings in Moscow.”

Nigeria also gained her independence from the British rule in same year.

Happy 55th Independent Day to both countries!!!
