KOFOLA - POPULAR DRINK IN CZECH REPUBLIC

As a child and a teenager in communist Czechoslovakia, I used to drink mostly water, tea, and coffee. But my mom would occasionally buy Kofola. Kofola is sort of like Coca-Cola, but not really.

If you read a history of Coca-Cola, you would know that John Pemberton invented this drink in late 1800's. To learn more about Coca-Cola history, then CLICK HERE.

Now let's look at Kofola: it was invented about 80 years later because Coca-Cola and Pepsi - drinks in slinky bottles - were costly and in a low supply. However, many restaurant patrons liked to order these expensive soft drinks as a way to show off. Nonetheless, Kofola became very popular for its specific taste and the price. After the VELVET REVOLUTION, there was a decline in Kofola production. But then, as with anything successful - a great innovative advertising came along and Kofola is back in the saddle. I have seen many flash mobs - and I enjoy most of them. I've seen some done in Grand Central Station in Manhattan, Some in Boston area, some in Germany, some in Down Under - you name a country and they probably did a flash mob. I have seen one even in Azerbaijan. And all of them were fun to watch. On YouTube. The other day I was doing some research and came across a flash mob done in the Czech Republic. And one video led to another, and I saw another, then I saw one done in Slovakia - so here we are: let's see what they have to offer to us.

EASTER 2016

I like to share stuff that people can enjoy. Something that makes them laugh or smile, something that they can recreate. Easter is around the corner and I found something very interesting on the good old Internet. Many people decorate their houses and have parties with Easter egg hunts. Mom and dad's decorate eggs with the children. What I will share with you is quite fun. I haven't tried it yet but I will. Enjoy THIS LITTLE PRESENTATION VIDEO that someone posted on the Internet.

I come from Czechoslovakia, which now divided into two countries - Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, in both parts people decorate their Easter eggs in a similar manner. First they paint the eggs (or use just plain brown ones) and then they use wax to paint on these eggs. HERE is another video how to decorate Easter eggs that you may very much enjoy. It is in check language but you can watch, how this talented YouTube creator is decorating her eggs. It's a very crafty skill that one have to develop. You need a very steady hand and a very good sense for geometrics. On top of that you need to keep your wax at the optimal temperature. If you can do that you can make absolutely beautiful Easter eggs that everyone will admire you for.

TANK AND ART

I have to write this post. I was doing some marketing for my YouTube channel and answering my fans questions on the Internet today, and I came across this interesting website. I saw a beautifully painted tanks by an Iranian artist Neda Taiyebi. In one of the images she is pictured with many boys. (I wonder if they helped her to paint her tanks). These images brought me back to the past.

They reminded me of a Czech artist David Černý. On April 27th it will be 25 years when the Pink Tank first emerged on Štefánik square in Prague, Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia). That night (on April 27, 1991) David Černý and several of his artist friend students painted a tank (that was erected on the square after the World War II ended in 1945) with a pink paint. David Černý was arrested and the tank was painted back to green color. But 15 newly elected politicians took advantage of their immunity and painted the tank pink again. The tank was painted green and pink back and forth several more times but you can read more about the history of this tank at this link.

Now, we are coming full circle back to Neda Taiyebi and her tanks. I think that she must have learned about David Černý while taking art classes in her college. I think that his idea appealed to her and this is the way that she fights for the peace with her beautiful designs on very ugly and dangerous tanks. SELFIE STICK WAS CZECH IDEA

Who would know? I never saw a movie "Zabil jsem Einsteina pánové...." (I Killed Einstein, gentlemen....) from the 70s. There was some nudity and my parents never allowed me to see movies like that.

Recently, I discovered a .gif which somebody made with using a clip from this movie. In the image (see a link below) you see a very famous Czech actress Iva Janžurová taking an image of herself and her husband with a selfie stick, prior to his trip to the past. However, this stick was much better and faster than old Polaroid cameras, because it printed images immediately, which were displayed on the handle. BEER GLASSES

I haven't posted anything spectacular in quite some time. I think some short article is due. Hmm, I should write about something that would be fun. Something that would be interesting. Something that people might enjoy reading.
Well, today I found an image that resonates with me. A lot! And I want to share few thoughts after seeing this image.

When I arrived in America many moons ago, I was not happy about the beer selection. Coming from the "BEER" country, I was actually tremendously disappointed. The beer that was available in the US back then was awful. I used to call it (pardon my language) "the piss water". On many occasions I probably insulted many of my wonderful American friends. They did laugh though. So, my belated apologies to all them ;-)
Actually, American corporate breweries still make this p-water. It tastes really bad. Ugh.

BUT then something extraordinary happened. Yes, the rise of microbreweries. Ahhhh. What a wonderful change. Beers started to taste how beers should taste.

However, about ten years ago I went to visit Europe for a longer period of time. I drunk beer in EU on a daily basis. When I returned back home, the microbrewery beers suddenly tasted too sweet. I had to get used to my favorite beers in the US all over again.

After "The Velvet Revolution" they started importing beers from my country - and my problem about drinking sweeter beers was solved. I started buying beers that were imported from CZ, along with beers from microbreweries. A great combination.

Now, I usually pour my beer into one particular glass I like a lot. When I saw an image online today (see it below), I was happy to find out that I was pouring my beer into a correct glass!!! Wow. By accident, I guess. Do you think that restaurants serve beer in correct glasses? Do servers in restaurants know what glass is correct for what type of beer?

Well, now you'll know what glass to use at home. That is, if you didn't know :-)

OK, I am going to my kitchen to pour myself some good cold Pilsner into my favorite glass. This image made me thirsty. Cheers. Na zdravi.

SUMMER 2015 - Visit Prague and Have FUN

It is nearly vacation time and you may be thinking - where should I go? Well I know where I will go this summer - EUROPE! I will travel through Oslo (Norway), Krakow (Poland), to many cities in Czech Republic (Praha, Ostrava, Havirov, Olomouc.... to name a few) and perhaps I will have enough time to go to Zilina and Kosice (both in Slovakia). I also will visit Berlin (Germany) and Copenhagen (Denmark)... and I just saw this video on YouTube and think it would be great to see for all fellow Americans who want to go to EU this summer (2015) - pretty good video about what one worldly American thinks of Prague - ENJOY!!!!!!

FAIR PLAY - Czech Out This Movie

After the fall of Communism (the Velvet Revolution 1989) in the former Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) there has been an influx of many not so good movies from Czech film makers. From the trailer that I watched today, perhaps we might experience a nice movie again. Although sometimes I think that if there would not be a Communism in Eastern Europe then there would not be that many good movies.

I would like to see entire movie on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, 7pm - @ the CZECH CENTER in Manhattan (Bohemian National Hall).

HOLIDAYS - Easter 2015

I love getting e-mails from my friends about anything interesting. The other day I got an e-mail from my friend that sends me about 20-50 e-mails every day. Yes, that many. And I have to sift through them all the time. The title usually is a good indicator if I should or should not open the e-mail. Of course, when I read "madeira egg decorating", I had to open that one. Decorating eggs for Easter is fun to do with your family and friends. One day I might try to do "madeira egg decorating", but it will be costly - buying all that equipment for this special art. I already did a little research ;-)

GENE DEITCH - The American Living In Prague Longest

Well, well... I am really hooked on internet. You know I start doing research about knitting or art or crochet and then soon I am reading about Iceland or virtually visiting New Zealand, and so on... Today I came across an interesting video, right after I was checking what is going on with my classmates from my youth. Then I started to click on news and soon I was on some page that caught my eye - kind of like "the American living in Prague longest"... of course I had to see who that was. And what an interesting story.

Gene Deitch was living in the US, and working as an animator for Hollywood and other companies that were making cartoons. He collaborated on films like "Popeye" or "Tom and Jerry". Then in 1959 he was sent to Prague, and although he wanted to stay only 10 days, he is living there even today. He is 90 years old, but still very busy in the film industry.

After I watched a Czech video about him, I started doing more research and found another interesting video he videotaped himself. This 90 years old gentleman is so technologically savvy that some of the young kids should be ashamed :-)

As I grew up in the communist Czechoslovakia every year we celebrated New Year with popping a cork of a Russian Sovietskoe Igristoe. Everyone called it a champagne, although it was a sparkling wine (only french sparkling wine should be called "champagne"). In the area where I grew up no other champagne was available. It did not hold us back to celebrate New Year with friends and family in a happiest ways. People would drink, eat, play guitars and sing songs, many would watch only one program called "Silvestrovska Estrada" that was created just for greeting the new year - it was pre taped several months prior to airing with Vladimir Dvorak, whom was this show's host for many years. And then EXACTLY with a strike of midnight we would pop the cork of the above mentioned overly sweet sparkling wine. Celebrations would continue most of the time until morning and many citizens would finally go to bed at 8 am.

WEDNESDAY, THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING

I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving in our Czech-o-American family starts about three days prior to the "so popular feast". (Can you believe it - I've been living in the US already 32 years! WOW!)
Usually, on Monday we make a list of what we need for cooking our dinner, and we cross check what we already have at home.
On Tuesday, we do some shopping and I usually make cranberry sauce from scratch and then store it in our frigidaire. So far so good. We, that means my dear husband (that is DH) and I, did all that.

Our cranberry sauce (with some rum, some orange liqueur and red wine in the sauce... heavenly, and easy to make too)

Last night (that means on Tuesday) our daughter arrived from college and we celebrated by having a vegetarian indian dinner I made per recipe from internet. She was hungry, didn't complain and ate it. So far so good. Now the question is: will we survive cooking in our kitchen with so many cooks today? (I expect that our "not baby anymore" will cook or bake one dish in-between her studies for tests).

Wednesday afternoon:
Every year my DH is in charge of "The Bird" and makes corn bread for stuffing from scratch. And today he did the same. He took a glass jar marked "CORN FLOUR" (yes, I keep my flours in glass jars) and proceeded to mix it with other goodies that belong to the corn bread. He baked it. After he baked it he told me it smells like nutmeg. I told him he is crazy. We tasted it, smelled it and I realized that in the glass jar marked "CORN FLOUR" I had a prepared mixture for pumpkin muffins. I completely forgot all about it. OK. So far not so good. The corn bread must be baked again.

Another trip to the store. And start the bread for stuffing all over again. Perhaps we should have a glass of wine, so we all keep our sanity. I need to keep sanity about my DH not putting stuff away as he cooks (therefore we can't move around the kitchen, and he needs to keep a sanity about me not marking my jars properly). Ha!

BTW - it is snowing today!!!

While he was in the store, I already cooked broccoli for "BROCCOLI CASSEROLE" - a recipe from my mom-in-law. Yum yum. (I think I should share it one of these days....)

Tonight we need to make butternut squash soup, before we give up on cooking :-)

yams (our DD is in charge)

Our guests are in charge of:

scalloped potatoes
green beans with almonds
drinks

OK - one more glass of wine? Eh, maybe I will leave the rest for tomorrow.... today turned out great, happy and peaceful with great music in the background..... I even danced a little with my daughter in the kitchen - LOL. What a sight it must have been... hahahhaha

QUICK HOME MADE SPREAD FOR BREAD

Not too long ago I had to bring to our art opening reception (it was a group show) a spread. I remembered how my mom used to make a spread for our bread from farmer's cheese. I can still taste the warm delicious bread from our famous local bakery with heaps of the spread in my mouth. Actually, I am imagining those long lines to buy the bread. The bakery was so popular that anyone who was driving by from Czech part of the republic to Slovak part never missed an opportunity to stop there and patiently wait in line. All the baked the bread was usually sold in about 4 hours.

After one of us would bring the bread home my mom would pull the farmer's cheese from our fridge along with couple other ingredients and in 10 minutes we were "stuffing our faces", so to speak. I do miss that bakery.

When I came to America I discovered cream cheese. So, I would take my mom's recipe and instead of the farmer's cheese I used cream cheese. And that is what I did for the above mentioned art reception. Several people asked who made the spread and if I could share the recipe. That is why I made THIS video - you can "cook" along. It is a quick preparation..... and yummy. Enjoy your meal/snack.

A screening of the film "Dance of the Blue Angels" by Czech director Steve Lichtag, with music performance by bassist George Mraz, pianist Camilla Mraz and drummer Anthony Pinciotti.

George, Camilla and Anthony all play and write completely unique music which never fails to elicit our deepest feelings while quietly astounding us with their world class technical resources and inspirational lyricism. They have been developing and exploring the idea and practice of creating live music for several live films. The trio would perform in front of the screen and this music would be largely improvised with a few pre-composed themes. The style of the music would be comprised of jazz, modern classical, and other genres of music they feel are germane to the artistic and emotional integrity of the film.

Preceding the film Dance of the Blue Angels, which has received awards in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, France, Serbia, Italy, and the USA, will be performance of the trio, George Mraz, Camilla Mraz and Anthony Pinciotti. The music will include their originals, some free pieces and some jazz standards.

A native of the Czech Republic, George Mraz was influenced by the jazz broadcasts of Willis Conover on Voice of America. He attended the Prague Conservatory and was playing jazz throughout Central Europe until 1968, when the Soviets entered Prague, leading him to accept a scholarship to Berklee School of Music in Boston. He has since played and recorded with dozens of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Tommy Flanagan, Herbie Hancock, and the New York Jazz Quartet. Mr. Mraz also leads his own trio with his wife Camilla.

BREWERIES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

There are many pubs in the Czech Republic - as you may know Czechs are well known beer drinkers.

After the Velvet Revolution people started to create their own companies, and microbreweries were on the top list. Under communist regime there were only handful of beer breweries that belonged to the state. People drunk beers such as Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Radegast, Staropramen to name a few.

Nowadays there are breweries all over the Czech Republic. And if you would like to try about 70 different types of Czech beers in one place, you should visit the Czech Beer Festival in Prague. The festival is held there for 17 days every May of each year.

If you are an art lover and love anything Czech and/or Slovak, perhaps you would like to visit BOHEMIAN NATIONAL HALL (BNH) in January 2014. "Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association" (BBLA) is presenting Czech and Slovak masters of printmaking. From the image it looks like it will be a mighty fine show. On January 11th 2014 there will be an exhibition tour from 3pm - 4:30pm. So if you are around you could see pretty good art. Try not to miss it.

A friend of mine pointed out a great video "How to peel a head of garlic". If you need to use whole cloves of garlic, or even if you need to slice them, this video will teach you how to do it fast. I never tried it, but when I do, I will upload my video to prove to you it is true :-)
