Concept to Customer: Connecting Partners and Catalysing Investment is the first in a series of experimental events organised by Creative Industries KTN (CIKTN) in conjunction with Cartezia and the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, Judge Business School, Cambridge University.

The workshop will be curated by Dr Uday Phadke (CIKTN’s Investment Theme Champion) and will bring together Creative & Digital Technology SMEs, Large Media and Corporates from Creative Industries with investors and funders. We will be using Riffstream#, a methodology developed by Uday and Cartezia to maximise the value of the networking at this event.

Our overall aim for the event is to explore new ways of facilitating collaboration across Creative Industries sectors, technologies and with investors. Specifically in the context of generating new projects and partnerships as the basis for delivering innovation and securing funding. The day’s activities will be focussed upon 2 themes:

Entertainment, Advertising & e-commerce

Health, Lifestyle & Communities

What is Riffstream#? Developed by Dr Uday Phadke and Cartezia, Riffstream is a methodology for curating networking events by creating an opportunity to turn project ideas into products/services which can be tested within an environment of potential partners, investors and customers. To read more about the Riffstream# concept visit www.riffstream.net to find out more

What will the day include?

Plenary Presentations and Panel Discussions: Delivered by leading industry representatives providing cutting edge insights into the above themes.

Showcasing Ideas: Providing a platform for SMEs and creative/digital entrepreneurs to showcase/present their current project ideas relevant to the above themes.

Structured Networking: Opportunities to network with Creative & Digital Technology SMEs, corporates and large media companies to help find potential partners, investors and/or customers.

Who is the event aimed at?

Creative and Digital SMEs

Large Media and Creative Industry Companies

Investors and Funders (angels, venture capitalists, private equity, banks and corporates)

Those interested in the Technology Strategy Board’s planned Connected Digital Economy Catapult.

See the Agenda: Click here for more details about the event agenda.

Background to the event and the RiffStream# Methodology

CIKTN recognizes that connecting market spaces to technologies, based on sustainable business models, lies at the heart of the challenge facing SME’s, corporates and investors: the key to success lies in successfully crossing this investment and development Chasm.

RiffStream# is an experimental approach to accelerating new business creation. The idea behind this approach, based on a musical analogy, is to provide an interactive environment where players from different disciplines can interact to synthesize and test new ideas and relationships with other SMEs, corporates, and investors.

Players in the RiffStream#can benefit by:

Better understanding of their role in their business eco-system.

Matching their ideas to potential markets with a clear definition of the product or service they can take to market.

Clarity on potential business models and their revenue, cost and investment envelopes.

Relationships with potential suppliers and partners.

Early dialogues with potential funders, investors and customers.

Why should you attend?

As well as offering structured networking opportunities and sharing insightful knowledge from leading industry figures, our Concept to Customer event will also provide a platform for SMEs and creative/digital entrepreneurs to showcase their project ideas or products relevant to the event’s themes below, to an audience of potential partners, investors and/or customers for up to 10 minutes.

Entertainment, Advertising & e-commerce

Health, Lifestyle & Communities

If you are working on projects within these areas and would like to present at this session, contact:anita@creativeindustriesktn.org

Certainty as to its future development is critical to enable Pinewood Studios to plan for growth. Without major investment Pinewood Studios cannot remain globally competitive and respond to the changing needs and ever increasing demands of the screen and digital industries.

Such future development will look forward for the next 20 years and will consider the need for stage and studio space, innovation, technology and television broadcast facilities, all designed to support Pinewood Studios’ position as a world-leading, digitally connected, hub for the global creative industries. The consultation will consider both the existing site and the adjacent land holding, which was recently the subject of a planning refusal for the Project Pinewood scheme.

New studio complexes are being developed around the world, such as Cape Town Studios, Docklands in Melbourne, Russia World Studio and Alvernia Studios, Poland. A current development is Chinawood, a new film making centre outside Tianjin, which has reportedly cost circa £0.5 billion.

The Company continues to implement its plans for Shepperton Studios.

Commenting on the future development consultation, Ivan Dunleavy, Chief Executive said:

“Our business again delivered record operating results during 2011, yet Pinewood and the UK were unable to satisfy the rising demand last year from the audio-visual sector.

“We must respond effectively to the growing demand and compete on an equal footing; otherwise Pinewood will fall behind its international competitors.

“Increasingly producers require the cost efficiencies that come from the co-location of creative skills, production experience and infrastructure for which Pinewood Studios has been renowned. We are determined to respond to the opportunity to create jobs and growth in this vibrant sector of the UK economy”.

London, 15 May: Teachers and students are invited by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to watch a live-streamed workshop aimed at teaching young people more about video game-making and inspiring them to make a game of their own.

The workshop, taking place at Bradford’s National Media Museum at 13:00 on Thursday 17 May, is part of BAFTA Young Game Designers 2012, a competition that aims to inspire the game designers and game-makers of the future by giving young people aged 11-16 the chance to design and create their own video game and develop it with industry professionals.

The live-stream will be broadcast at www.bafta.org/ygd from 13:00 until 15:30. Those who tune in will hear from leading figures in the games industry, including Hal Sandbach, Senior Designer at Evolution Studios, Tom Woolley, Curator of New Media at the National Media Museum, and John Dennis, former Head of Design on the Worms series of games. Viewers will get insights on how commercial games are made, and receive tips on how to create their own game. They can also tweet their questions at @BAFTAGames and the best will be put to the experts. An edited version of the workshop will be available after the event at www.bafta.org/ygd.

The BAFTA Young Game Designers competition is open to 11-16 year olds and has attracted hundreds of entries from across the UK every year since it began in 2010. This year, for the first time, young people have two ways to enter:

The Concept Award is for those who have an idea for a new game, and can describe the characters, the world of the game, and how it will be played.

The Game-making Award, presented by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), will suit young people who want to make their own games using game-making software or programming languages. This is their chance to show off their technical skills as well as their creativity.

Young people can enter one or both categories, either as an individual, as a pair or as a team of three. The top three entrants in both categories will be invited to the British Academy Children’s Awards in November 2012, and the winners will have their game developed with experts from the University of Abertay Dundee, as well as visiting a leading games studio.

Future workshops are taking place at the following:

Games Britannia Festival, Rotherham – Wednesday 4 July

TeenTech schools event, Humber – Thursday 12 July

Dare ProtoPlay, Dundee – Friday 10 August

Edinburgh Interactive Festival – Saturday 11 August

Eurogamer Expo, London – dates tbc

BAFTA has partnered with Abertay University and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) on the initiative. The competition is open to all young people in the UK aged 11-16. The deadline for entries is 22 October 2012. Further details about how to enter, as well as teaching resources and details of workshops around the country, can be found at www.bafta.org/ygd.

Unlike BLUE LIKE JAZZ and THE PRICE which are both based on material written by authors with large and loyal followings, I AM I is an excellent example of how to build support for an original script. After seeing my presentations on crowdfunding, writer-director Jocelyn Towne and her producers Cora Olson and Jen Dubin from Present Pictures (GOOD DICK) convinced an investor to match up to $100,000 in donations. They built a solid website, calibrated their reward levels, planned the stages of their campaign, and created a great video. Done in one long carefully choreographed take, viewer’s found this humorous video irresistible.

They began their 38-day effort on Kickstarter through their personal networks. Jocelyn spent the month before the campaign drafting individual emails to everyone she knew and saved them for launch day. On Twitter, 40,000 people were following her actor/husband Simon Helberg (featured in the hit TV show, THE BIG BANG THEORY) and 10,000 were following Jason Ritter (another popular I AM I cast member who is the star of NBC’s THE EVENT). The team also made good use of Facebook. Jocelyn worked tirelessly on the campaign, writing personal thank you notes to almost every donor.

Donations started strong ($17,000 in the first few days), slowed down over the Christmas holidays, and accelerated as they approached the finish line ($24,000 in the closing days). Their contributors included friends, family, colleagues, and a few studio executives. 80% of their 902 contributors were total strangers. Amazingly, 3 of these strangers made $10,000 donations, for which Jocelyn and Simon promised to come to their hometowns and do private screenings just for them. Overall, as is typical with Kickstarter projects, the majority of donations were at the $20 (32%) and $100 (26%) levels.

Their campaign was so successful that it gave I AM I the momentum needed to move into production. Even after their campaign ended, people were still asking to contribute. The I AM I team added a Donate button to their website and is offering rewards similar to those they gave on Kickstarter.

In addition to the $111,965 raised, their campaign created a large network of supporters. Producer Cora Olson observed, “our initial goal was to raise as much money as possible, but when we saw how many online impressions we were making, we realized that this awareness could ultimately be more valuable than cash when it’s time to launch the film.”
