Removing NSLogs from release build

NSLogs are great when debugging to see exactly what is going on but the downside is that they impact heavily on performance (I speak from experience on that one).

Luckily there is a way to "disable" them on release builds of your application and still have them in your debug builds. we do this by simply adding the following macro to the prefix .pch file in your project or anywhere before the entry point to your application.

If you want an explanation here it is.

When you build a Debug version of an application DEBUG is defined , if its a release build , DEBUG is not defined.This macro checks if DEBUG is defined , if it is it sets NSLog to what it should be , if DEBUG is not defined then NSLog is defined as an empty code block that as you should know will do nothing , thus saving on performance.

Color status bar on iPhone

This is just a quick tip with some basic logic on how to get a colored status bar on an iphone app ,here i will be assuming that the app does not rotate so i will be placing all the code in appdelegate in the

- (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions

So the secret is really that there is no secret ,apples framework does not allow you to choose the color of the status bar so instead we set the status bar to the translucent predefined style of UIStatusBarStyleBlackTranslucent and then we draw a colored view behind it to make it appear as though the color of the bar has changed. Here is a sample where i "tinted" the statusbar cyan in the app delegate :

Again this only works if your app does not rotate , though it wont take much modification to support that,the main thing here is that you need to understand that to color the statusbar you have to make it transparent and draw behind it. This is what your app should look like if you were to place this code snippet into your appdelegate.

Using delegates in Objective-C

Why use delegation?

Well when writing Objective-C programs in Xcode we are encouraged to use the MVC(Model View Controller) structure.In MVC a model cannot send messages directly to a specific controller.This can become a problem if data in your model changes independantly and you need to update this information in your view via the controller(The model must never communicate directly with the view).This is where a delegate comes in,it allows messages to be sent from the model to a controller that is not specified in the model but is rather specified by the controller,in other words the controller specifies itself.

If you dont really understand what im talking about so far ,don't worry.I didn't understand delegates either until I needed one,but hopefully by the end of this tutorial you will understand not only how to use a delegate ,but the reason you would want to use one.

Program breakdown

For this tutorial we will write a program that has a model that will change an integer value on a timer event and we will have a view with a label and a controller that will update the value displayed on the label.We will then use delegation to tell the controller when it needs to update the label by broadcasting messages from the model.

First things first ,lets open up Xcode and create a single view based iPhone application With ARC(Automatic Reference Counting) enabled,I tried doing this without ARC before and alot of things broke and I actually wasn't able to fix it.I am also using storyboards,you can use Xibs if you know what you are doing.

Next lets add a label to the view and link it to our controller by selecting assistant editor and ctrl+dragging it into the Controller code.Make it an outlet and name it textLabel.

This should generate the following code in ViewController.h:

This will begin a loop that will constantly change the value of currentNumber once startTimerLoop is called,however if we ran the application now we wouldnt see this output in the console because satrtTimerLoop is never called,so lets call it ,go to ViewController.h and add

Now when we run the app on the simulator we can see the console output in Xcode of the number changing

As you can see the label is still not updating ,which is good because if it is then some sort of voodoo magic has occured because we haven't even written the delegate yet.I think its about time we do that.First we create a @protocol in the model in NumberLooper.h above the interface ,this lets us specify what messages are sent to the delegate:

Then we set the delegate as a property in the interface,this property must always be strong.

Lion's eat RAM's

I recently purchased a Mac-mini(Yes I own a Mac now) with relatively the same hardware specs as my(well the one I work with) MacBook pro, Intel Core i5,Graphics 3000(or whatever) etc. The only difference being that the ram in the Mini was only 2GB and the Laptop has 4GB,we will come back to this later.

The MacBook Pro experience: My experience with the laptop has been great,never lagging and I really got used to using a track-pad instead of a mouse and found gestures very helpful for quick desktop management with a small screen.It was also very responsive and I keep tons of windows open all the time without problems.

When I got my Mac Mini,I popped it out of its box and plugged it in to my standard PC peripherals,switched it on and everything worked fine ,I got a few nice surprises too,I did not expect it to come with a wireless card or built in Bluetooth,just like it does on the MacBook.

Then I tried to run Safari,iTunes and Xcode all at once(I do this often while working on the MacBook) and things where not so fine anymore ,the Dock was slow to respond and animate and everything was sticky.So I downloaded an app that shows memory usage in the finder bar,and Wow was I surprised,20MB free is the kind of thing you expect to see when running a hefty virtual machine,not 3 apps,it's crazy even for a 2 gig machine).

Some research into the subject revealed that OSX Lion uses as much RAM as it can so that it has quick access to data for applications,making them more responsive,however I was getting the opposite on my Mini with 2GB of RAM,compared to the awesome performance of the 4GB in the MacBook,So to me it seemed that 2GB of RAM just wasn't enough for Lion.

I decided to obtain a 4GB chip to stick along side one of the 1GB chips already in the Mac-Mini and I proved myself right. From startup Lion gobbled up 2 of my RAMs(2GBs of RAM,I'm trying to be metaphorical) but proceeded to be smooth and quick,exactly what I'm used to on the MacBook Pro,after starting up a virtual machine and numerous other applications I noticed that nearly all of my 5GB of ram was gobbled up (I had 10MB free) but I didn't notice a performance drop like I did when I only had 2GB of ram. So whats the point of this story?

Well the point is OSX Lion is great but if you intend running it,make sure your machine has at the very least 4GB of ram or your experience will be tarnished PS: I realize that I may have written this article badly,but its 12:45AM so that's my excuse.

The World’s best operating system

This is a debate that has waged since the beginning of the three major operating systems, namely

Microsoft Windows, The Mac Operating system and the many variations of Linux. For the purpose of this post I will be comparing using the latest versions, so that is Microsoft Windows 7, Mac OSX Lion and well, Linux is Linux.

Microsoft Windows is the operating system everybody should be familiar with, it’s pretty much what people grow up with and become used to, when you buy a pc, it more than likely comes with windows, you don’t get pc games, you get “games for windows”, plus the average person’s question when they see Linux on your pc is “What windows is that?”. Up until now though, I have never been happy with windows, there were always error messages and viruses and just general slowness and inefficiency. But from the moment I saw windows 7, I liked it, not only did it look good, but it performed well and I was able to use it for months without a single error, I nicknamed it Windows 1.

I first started using Linux with Ubuntu 9.10 and was immediately hooked. First of all, I love customization, and boy does Linux allow customization. The vast array of free apps was another plus and I found that I learned more about the workings of my computer in a year of using Linux than I learned in years of using Windows. Unfortunately 10.04 was a real pain to get to work with my Nvidia graphics card and I really only tried again with 11.04 with the new unity interface, things are getting a lot friendlier to normal users and I was happy with 11.04. When 11.10 came along I was so eager to try it I installed it over my 11.04,I now regret it because again the graphics drivers were and issue, I couldn’t install them because the software manager froze every time I opened it and there was no reverting back to synaptic, I suppose one day when I feel like it, I will attempt to resolve the problem using apt-get. If you are using a pc with a built-in Intel powered graphics accelerator though, It’s a good OS for the pc (provided you aren’t an avid gamer).

Last but not least comes Mac OSX. My experience with the OS is very limited because I don’t and never have owned a Mac, however I do run an OSX Virtual Box and will play with a Mac every chance I get. Strangely I like it, even though there is not much in the way of customization, it’s awesome to work with and I like its Linuxy feel. It is also fast, very fast ,and that’s because its designed for only a few types of hardware so it’s not bogged down with drivers ,it will still have minor errors but it’s generally a smooth experience the entire time.

So ,the moment you have been waiting for, the final verdict, what is the best? Well after much thought I have found that a man named Erwin Schrödinger already found the solution ,well sort of, because they are all the best ,and they are all not the best . You see ,the answer is only really determined by yourself, because each person is an individual and we all have our own likes and dislikes , so it doesn’t matter which one is the best, it matters which one is best for you, they all have their merits ,and keep in mind that competition drives innovation. As a tech-nerd I could use all three without an issue and will keep the Schrödinger’s cat point of view.

Skyrim

Out of all the games I was anticipating in 2011, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (Kelle: Keizaal in the Dragon tounge) was strangely not one of them.This was because I hated Oblivion and expected Skyrim to be the same.

I was very,very wrong. There were actually only two reasons I hated Oblivion, but they deterred me from actually attempting to finish the game.Reason one was that the inventory used illogical little icons and was as intuitive as Quantum mechanics(I to this day don't know how to drop an item in Oblivion) .Reason two was aesthetics,the people are the ugliest collection of creatures ive seen in a game,and thats just the humans... And then theres the water,lets just say it filled my head with strange thoughts of water coolers in the Bethesda office being filled with a strange matte blue liquid.

In Skyrim they fixed it all ,everything is beautiful ,and finally someone got it into thier head that words are alot more intuitive than silly little pictures (they even tell you how to drop stuff in the inventory menu).I am a sucker for lore and there is plenty of it in this game,I got so immersed in the world of Skyrim I found myself reading online about the dragon language used in the game.Sad to say that the made up language is not a full language and only consists of the few hundred words needed by Bethesda to produce the game so there will never be nerds speaking fluent Dragon as there are speaking Klingon.(hint hint Bethesda)

After completing the questline twice I decided to do some cheating,this proved a lot of online chatter about the game to be false.My uber character at level 81(highest) with all skills at 100 and all perks
only dissapeared for around two seconds when suddenly changing to sneak in the middle of combat and I was not able to pickpocket clothes off people without them noticing.What is notable though is that in combat this fully leveled character could probably take on all nine devines at once and win(yes nine ,not 8 you thalmor elf!).

There are tonns of quests to do in Skyrim ,alot of which have different ways to approach them and apparently they just keep generating until Alduin eats this world,but after a while you will notice they will become repetitive.Once you have reached that point you have two options,read all the interesting books scattered throughout the lands ,or head down to the nexus and pick up some mods,the selection of mods is already large and impressive, and keep in mind that the Creation kit hasent even been released to the public yet.

Personally ,I enjoyed this game more than any other game I played this year,its completely immersive and I can't wait for the DLC because I actually feel bad getting bored with it.Well done Bethesda.

Using The AeroGlass library

The AeroGlass library accesses the dwmapidll to extend the frames of windows for use with the C# language, this gives the effect of having more glass areas on a window or making a window look as if it is completely glass. The library aims to make implementing this method easier so that you can achieve this effect with minimal code and will not have to access the dll yourself,version 1.2 of the library is compatible with both windows forms and WPF forms, though the implementation differs slightly. This documentation covers the implementations of both types.

Usage with windows forms

There are 2 ways of implementing glass on a Windows form using the AeroGlass library, one is to use the GlassPane controls AutoExtend property and the other is to use code, let us first take a look at the AutoExtend property method.

AutoExtend

Before we begin it is worth noting that if you use the AutoExtend method you can only place one GlassPane, if you place another it will not work or errors may occur, it is for this reason that AutoExtend is false by default.

For AutoExtend to work, the glass pane must be docked, this will be explained later in the code section. To make a form with an extended glass frame using this method, add the control to your toolbox by right clicking the toolbox and selecting choose items

Following this, place the GlassPane control , dock it as you wish and set the AutoExtend property to true, here I have docked mine on the bottom of the form.

Now running the application should produce the following result:

Using Code

Now let us take a look at using code to implement an extended glass frame.When using code ,you are still required to use the GlassPane,this is because all the code actually does is extend the frame of the window inwards, if we just use the code and not the GlassPane the inner part of the window will still cover the extended frame. This can be seen if you look carefully at the image below.

To use the library ,we must first add a reference to the AeroGlass dll, placing a GlassPane on the form will automatically do this, then we add the using statement to use the Classes in the library.

Now, in the form class, create a new instance of the Glass class:

Place a GlassPane on your form and dock it as you desire, I have docked mine on the bottom as I did previously, but this time AutoExtend is set to false. Then in the Form_Load event, call the extendFrame function:

g.extendFrame(0, glassPane1.Height, 0, 0, this);

The extendFrame function has the following parameters: intTop ,int Bottom, int Left, int Right Form form. ”this” refers to the current form. Note that I used the height of the GlassPane as my margin width for the bottom margin. Running this code will yield the same result as seen previously

Usage with WPF forms

Using the AeroGlass Library with a WPF form is a little different but the concept is still the same. Starting with a Blank WPF form, select the main grid in the center of the form and give it a name ,have named mine mainGrid.

Next ,add a reference to the AeroGlass dll and include the following using statement in the code of your window:

Then in the class:

WpfGlasswg = newWpfGlass();

Finally we add this line to the Window_loaded event:

wg.extendFrame((int)mainGrid.Height, 0, 0, 0, this);

As you can see, the structure of this last statement is the same as that used in the Windows Form, the only difference is that the height of mainGrid had to be cast as an integer. Running this should result in the following:

Don’t like a completely glass window, simply change the size of the grid or choose different properties and parameters to parse or overlay the window with different controls.

My C# 2D Game

A couple of months ago i started writing a 2D shooter game using OpenTK(The Open Tool Kit) in C#,i got far but I ran into some issues,that ,due to my lack of knowledge and experience with the language caused be to abandon the project.I recently picked up the project again and in three days I was able to rewrite the game to the point at which I last stopped(this originally took me months),and the code is much more efficient.

Luckily I have found ways to overcome certain problems and even though the collision checking is slightly dodgy it is now a simple working game that loads levels from a level file format I developed myself.It is my hope to soon release a "bemo'" so that people can see what I'm doing and I can maybe get some feedback.I use the term "bemo" to refer to a beta-demo containing only a few levels ,like a demo,but using the beta game code.

So far the level files can only be produced by typing them out,I am working on documentation for the format so it will be easy for users to generate their own levels.Hopefully a GUI based level editor will be made,whether written by me ,or a programmer who understands my documentation(Hint) .

I still have not named the game and I am open to suggestions on name,story,etc

MacBook Pro with Lion,WiFi problems?

If you don't know already I am a fan of Apples products,this is coupled with a strange fact.I have never,ever owned anything made by Apple besides the copy of Snowleopard I run on a VirtualBox.

I may not own one ,but I think I can speak with authority on the topic of "MacBook Pro with Lion,WiFi problems?" because of what I have seen on another machine and what I have Internet-ed.

I have seen Lion run on a 2008 15 inch MacBook Pro - no WiFi problems ,why? It was fully updated.The reason I am actually posting this is that I recently tried helping someone with this problem on a not fully updated MacBook Pro(hence the extensive internet research).Of all the strange hacks and ideas the only eureka moments on the internet are when some guy posts ,"I updated and now it works". So there,if you are having WiFi problems on your MacBook pro with Lion,Update,it seems like it works and it makes more sense than "8.8.8.8".

The person I attempted to help was unfortunately reluctant to follow my advice,I might just say that's their problem,not mine,but it is my problem because they own a MacBook and I don't :( .

Setting up Qt Creator for assembly

After fiddling with inline asssembly (not very successfully) ,I recently decided to try writing proper assembly and compiling with NASM in Linux. After writing a hello world using gedit and having a terminal open for compiling,linking and running I had a thought.,there has to be a better way to do this.

So I tried Qt Creator ,because I know it's easy to add custom build and run commands,and what do you know? I got it to work. Here's how,my screenshots and assembly code are in Linux but the set up should be the same regardless of the operating system,if you are not using Linux then just use the same commands you use to assemble in your operating system.

First off ,create a new console application:

I named mine ASM

Rename the main.cpp to main.asm and delete all the text inside.then insert some assembly:

Now open up the “Project” tab and edit the build settings,remove the current build and clean steps and remove the “-build-desktop” from the end of the build directory line.

Now add two custom build steps,these would be the two commands that you would usually use to compile assembly

“nasm -f elf main.asm” and “ld -s -o ASM main.o ” (“ld -m elf_i386 main.o -o ASM” if you are a x86_64 user)

Take note where I used “ASM” this is the name I gave the Qt project in the beginning.

Heres what it should look like,remember to check “Enable custom process step”

And thats it ,now when you hit the run button the assembly is built and run and you can see the output under “application output”.

Prettyfying with CSS

The internet is filled with tutorials on how to do nice effects with CSS,so I decided to fill it more by doing a tutorial on 3 effects: Rounded corners,Shadows and gradients. At the end I will show you an example of what can be done when you string these 3 together.

First off ,lets create two files one html file and one CSS file hello.html and style.css.

Lets start with setting up the CSS so we can get a nice layout.

Rapid Firefox

Sometimes in the tech world you get this feeling that you are slightly behind,like not all of your programs are up to date and they may be a year or two old.

Lately though some programs have updates that are so regular that if your program was up to date a couple of hours ago ,it isn't any more. Firefox is one of those programs,in fact it has the tiniest release intervals ive ever seen,I think it should be renamed.Maybe something like Tasmanian Devil(with a jetpack).

I'm not complaining about this ,Frequent updates are a good thing ,I'm just suggesting some more appropriate naming."Rapid release" just doesn't do Firefox's bewildering update release speed justice.Its kind of like describing the way a minigun fires its rounds as "rapid release". It just sounds wrong.Come to think of it "rapid fire" would be a better way to describe things than "rapid release" (for both Firefox and the minigun).

At least with the "rapid fire" we know that the people who maintain Firefox are actually working really hard(I wonder if they sleep at all) ,and who cares what the worlds fastest browser is when you use the one with the fastest updates?

Well done Firefox crew for working so hard,may you ,um ,"release" many more.

Well well ,my first blog ,and about time too, my nerd progress has been slow thanks to the limited Internet in lovely South Africa. As the title should tell you (I hope it does,I'm such a noob) ,this blog is about me,a Student/Programmer.The blog will be mainly aimed at programming and tech subjects and events that affect me /etc/.

One thing you should know is that I am a fan of both Apple and Linux.I don't own anything made by Apple but I would really like to.
