Nationwide Accident Repair Services are delighted to announce the total raised during their year-long charity partnership with UK Air Ambulances.

The team are delighted to have raised a staggering £42,363.15 this year, all of which will go directly towards helping UK Air Ambulances continue their life-saving work. The partnership has seen morale flying high throughout the business as the teams took on the challenge of raising as much money as possible to benefit their chosen charity!

UK Air Ambulances are run solely on charitable donations and receive no government or lottery funding. Nationwiders across the business voted to support UK Air Ambulances in March 2017, with the aim to help them continue to provide life-saving services which have personally affected some of the team.

Andrew Scriven, Corporate Liaison Officer for the Association of Air Ambulances said: “On behalf of the air ambulance charities of the UK, we would like to thank everyone at Nationwide Accident Repair Services for their incredible support. The donation received will go directly to impacting the lives of those most significantly unwell. Each day the air ambulances will be involved in approximately 70 missions, saving lives and improving the outcome for patients.”

From exercise classes to cake sales and even a tattoo, the Nationwide Team rallied around this cause without hesitation and fundraised enthusiastically all year round. With the added motivation of raising money for a local cause, many teams continued to improve upon their total despite having already hit their team target.

The Nationwide Teams have worked with Nationwide’s core values in mind throughout this charity partnership, seeing them work as a team to achieve the best fundraising result possible for UK Air Ambulances.

Michael Wilmshurst, Nationwide CEO, said: “It’s hard not to be very proud of a team that works so relentlessly hard and still finds time to think about others and raise money for such a great cause.”

Over the past year Nationwiders have even had the opportunity to visit local air ambulance bases to meet the teams they have been supporting and gain a better understanding of the work they do.

Bekki James, Corporate Fundraising Manager from Thames Valley Air Ambulance, said: “On behalf of Thames Valley Air Ambulance and our colleagues across the UK, I want to say a huge thank you to the team at Nationwide Accident Repair Services for their support.

“Their generosity has helped us all to deliver advanced care to people in a medical emergency night and day, 365 days a year. Our pilots, paramedics and doctors work together, at the frontline of saving lives. In 2017 UK Air Ambulances across the country attended over 20,000 life-saving missions. Every day, anyone in our communities could be in urgent need of our services. When the worst happens, our teams give patients the best chance.”

The Nationwide Team are rightfully proud of their efforts and achievements over the past 12 months and have enjoyed supporting such a worthy cause.

Friday 23rd March is World Meteorological Day and this year (2018) the focus is on being weather-ready and climate-smart.

The weather plays a significant role in many of our lives, but whereas all most of us need to do is decide whether to pack an umbrella when heading offf for the day, for those working in the world of aviation - in particular where lives are at stake - the weather plays a far more crucial role.

We spoke to Rob Mackie, former Senior Devon Air Ambulance Pilot and current Safety Manager, about what the weather means day to day for our pilots and crew.

How does the team get its weather reports?

We get our data from a variety of sources. Many pilots will take a look at the forecast on the TV the evening before a shift, but at the start of the shift they will check the aviation-specific reports, namely a METAR (METeorological Actual Report), which is what you can see out of the window at the airport.

These are updated every half an hour throughout the day. There will also be a TAF (Terminal Area Forecast), which gives a prediction of what the weather will be like in the vicinity of the airport issuing the reports. These TAF’s are generally valid for 9 hours and are updated every three.

There are also many online and APP-based services that give aviation-related information including rainfall charts, low-level winds, upper-level winds and temperatures and so on. The Met Office also recently launched a low-level weather service aimed at our sort of operation as, again generally, aviation reports and forecasts tend to concentrate on the ‘upper airspace’ for the airlines.

We also have the ability, through APP-based technology, to get actual weather information from remote, autonomous weather stations. We funded the installation of one on the roof of Derriford Hospital in Plymouth because once the airport closed, there was no way of getting any accurate weather information from that area and as it is our major Hospital, we needed to know that we could operate to it.

What are the most challenging conditions to operate in?

This is fairly subjective as it depends on the pilot. Some pilots don’t like flying in cloud whilst others don’t like falling snow. Low cloud and mist is tricky for others and quite a few don’t like strong gusty winds.

As a general rule though, the worst conditions for flying are Fog and icing conditions (icing conditions not icy: in aviation, icing conditions are those atmospheric conditions that can lead to the formation of water ice on the surfaces of an aircraft, or within the engine as carburetor icing).

With fog the visibility goes right down, sometimes below limits - and if we are flying we will need to land at some stage and it can be very difficult if you can’t see the ground. Icing conditions are challenging because our aircraft do not have icing clearance. Ice is a major problem as it can form very quickly on an aircraft and can, in extremis, make the aircraft too heavy, so it falls out of the sky, freeze or restrict the controls with all the implications that can have, and it can even freeze the fuel. Icing, as far as aviation is concerned, can occur when the air temperature is at 4oc or lower and there is visible moisture (cloud, rain, drizzle etc.) this is really nasty and dangerous, so we avoid these conditions whenever possible.

On the other hand, the worst conditions for a patient can depend on their injuries. Strong, gusty winds with lots of turbulence is generally the worst as this often leads to airsickness (vomit is not good in a confined space!) or, if for example the patient has a spinal injury. So the wind is another factor that we have to take into consideration.

Is there a preferred time of year for missions?

From a crew perspective, blue skies, warmth, but not too hot, and sunny is ideal - and there is more likely to be such weather as this in the summer, of course. However, HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) flying is a reactive resource. We can only respond after something has happened, which we have no control over, so we have to respond to that.

Do you have any weather-related anecdotes you can share with us?

Any pilot you speak to will have countless stories! For instance, 70mph fog, the snow shower that turned into a blizzard within seconds and we had to land (quickly) in a field for 20 minutes until it passed; the unseen, vicious turbulence around a mountain that inverted my helicopter; un-forecast, rapid deterioration in the weather that turned to fog, which called for a diversion to Plymouth airport and an instrument approach which only just got us in; and a tropical rainstorm with rain so heavy it reduced the visibility to zero and very nearly put the fire out in the engine!

Certainly our incredible crew has a great deal of adversity from the elements to deal with, all the whlle responding to ever-developing emergency situations and keeping patient care at the core.

We depend upon our volunteers and fundraisers to keep our aircraft flying and getting to where they are needed and quickly. Find out more about how to get involved with the charity.

For many of us it still feels as though winter’s icy grasp is reluctant to let go, though with the clocks going forward at the weekend technically spring is right around the corner.

But if you have been snowed out of work or are stuck at home, then it’s the perfect opportunity to sort out some of that clutter, bag up a few of those no-longer-needed toys, books and clothes, and maybe give the place a bit of a spruce. Since it’s Spring Clearing Week from 24-30 March, it’s a good time to take stock of your stuff, and maybe pass it on to some happy recipients...

An annual event that pays off

Research by MoneyMagpie in 2017* found that 50% of the UK population has ditched the traditional spring clean citing a lack of time, apathy and the on-going cleanliness of the home as their reasons for doing so.

The Association of professsional Declutterers & Organisers (APDO) is keen to ensure that this valuable chance to clear the decks of any physical (and consequently mental) clutter is not abandoned too, so they have launched Spring Clearing Week in 2018 to highlight the benefits of an annual review of our ‘stuff’.

But when faced with over-spilling drawers, seething under-stairs cupboards and sheds, garages and attics that were last looked at when you first moved in, many of us balk at the idea of chipping away at the clutter. That’s why APDO members around the country will be helping the public to declutter and clear out after the dreary winter months to help revitalise their environment with renewed energy and vigour.

Don’t go it alone!

In Devon, local declutterer, Jasmine Sleigh from Change Your Space will be speaking at Exmoor U3A during Spring Clearing week, plus she will be offering Q&A sessions at the local Exmouth charity stores, and presenting a workshop on clearing our clutter in Exeter and Newton Abbot. She will be appearing at the Devon Air Ambulance Budleigh Salterton charity shop on Wednesday 28 March at 2pm to help customers with some top decluttering tips.

“Spring Clearing Week is a great chance to review priorities for the year ahead and pick up any lapsed New Year resolutions,” says Jasmine. “Using this week can help you focus on whether the environment in your home is really helping you to achieve these goals.”

And of course, a revived living space is not the end of the story. The lifespan of your pre-loved items, from bric-à-brac to party frocks can be much extended by donating to charity. All of our Devon Air Ambulance shops are delighted to receive donations as all the money raised from those sales goes back into keeping our helicopters flying.

“We’re always grateful when someone has a bit of a life laundry," says Budleigh Manager, Linda Cain. "We help pre-loved items go to good homes and turn donations into cash for the charity. We’re really looking forward to a visit from Jasmine and to hear her advice as it’s bound to help a lot of people tackle their clutter.”

If you would like to make a donation to one of our charity shops just pop in with your items. You can find a list of our shops here. Don’t forget to pop along to speak to Jasmine at 2pm on the 28th for fresh decluttering insights and to bring in the spring to your home!

It's British Science Week (9-18 March, 2018), so we thought it would be a great opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the clinical advances of our paramedic team and how they have improved patient care over recent years.

The sky's the limit for pre-hospital critical care

For the last two years our clinical team has been working towards a degree for air paramedics at Plymouth University and are now studying in their final year. After their first year they became 'Specialist Paramedics – Critical Care’ with the option to continue studying in years 2 and 3.

This is a new qualification that Devon Air Ambulance created in partnership with the university, which has put Devon on the map as a centre of excellence for pre-hospital care. The resulting Master's Degree course for paramedic aircrew makes our team among the highest qualified in the profession.

The first module on the MSc Pre-hospital Critical Care/Transport and Retrieval degree began in early September 2015 and has taken place over a three year period, during which our team has studied for a minimum of 10 hours a week. The first tranche of 20 paramedics have since been joined by newer paramedics who are encouraged to contribute to advancing the body of knowledge underpinning pre-hospital critical care through continued research and further study by continuing beyond the first year.

“The world of pre-hospital emergency medicine is moving very quickly with numerous clinical papers published each month, suggesting new and innovative procedures and practices," says Devon Air Ambulance’s Clinical Support Officer and paramedic, Darren Goodwin.

"The aim of this programme is to equip already highly experienced paramedics with the knowledge to appraise, and where necessary challenge, current thinking and bring their own experience to bear in advancing clinical practice.

"There are existing ‘off-the-shelf’ courses, but we wanted to design a course that addressed the specific needs identified by DAAT and one that addresses the application of theory in practice while benefiting from the very real experiences of paramedics in action.

"This programme not only helps practitioners with their decision-making and enhances the quality of critical care, but it also helps Devon Air Ambulance paramedics to become genuine leaders in their field and to make real and positive changes to best practice.”

Leaders in their field

Amanda Denton, Post-graduate Lead at Plymouth University’s Faculty of Health & Human Sciences, says, “The idea for this degree is a testament to the commitment of everyone involved in the collaboration that the course was up and running within a year.

“We have created a platform for personal, academic and practical advancement in this highly specialised area and it has already caught the attention of the wider profession with paramedics from several other air ambulance services joining the course.

“We are in no doubt that we have developed a model of Paramedic education that will lead the way in clinical development for air ambulance services and create a nationally recognised centre of excellence in pre-hospital critical care.

“I must congratulate DAAT for the vision in identifying the need for this degree and the courage to fund it. It will help future proof the clinical work of air ambulance services everywhere.”

The three year MSc Pre-Hospital Critical Care – Retrieval and Transfer degree is delivered by the School of Health Professions at Plymouth University and led by Amanda Denton and Peter Allum, with the course funded by DAAT.

Look out for forthcoming blogs about specific medical advances and how these are set to improve the lives of ourpatients.
Heléna joined DAA in 2007 and has since overseen a wide range of developments such as the introduction of the UK’s first specialist HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Services) despatch team dedicated to tasking the aircraft, the purchase and customisation of the charity’s two emergency helicopters, the opening of a second airbase at Eaglescott in North Devon, the successful application for its own Air Operating Certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency, establishment of a network of community landing sites and the introduction of night flying.

Putting the patients first

“Under Heléna’s stewardship, DAA has grown and developed in every aspect of its operations and service," says DAA Chair of Trustees, Stephen Tyrrell. "The highlights of purchasing new aircraft, establishing new air bases and introducing night flying tend to overshadow some of the other major aspects of the impact she has had on the charity.

“These include vastly improved governance and transparency, the training and development of all staff including the ground-breaking MSc in Pre-Hospital Critical Care/Retrieval and Transfer for paramedics, the development of the Senior Leadership team, increase in the number of volunteers and their training and a considerable uplift in income to pay for all of these plus future developments.

“Her leadership and the direction she has steered the charity in has been based on two factors - making benefit to patients the principle driver of everything DAA does and ensuring that we really engage with the people of Devon so that they are always aware that it is their own emergency service and that we operate it on their behalf.

“We are delighted for Heléna being recognised by Grow Exeter in this way. It is thoroughly deserved.”

Find out more about our incredible team, or if you'd like to contribute your own skills to the important work of the charity, why not consider becoming a volunteer? There are lots of ways to help and lots of benefits to be gained.

Devon Air Ambulance is powered 100% by people. Our supporters, volunteers and teams are dedicated, committed, and passionate about what they do, and this passion is what makes a meaningful difference to the lives of people in Devon.

Today is International Women’s Day, which is a great date on the global calendar because, as many of us know, it acknowledges and celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also calling for gender parity in work and far beyond.

At Devon Air Ambulance we know that equality improves life for everyone, so we wanted to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women whose passion has helped to inspire our teams in their own lives. Here’s who they nominated and why...

Rob Mackie, Safety Manager

There is a woman that has had an incredible, long-standing and deep influence on my life. Her music and lyrics have spoken to me far more than anybody else’s, and she has provided a soundtrack to my life for which I am immensely grateful. I would like to nominate the unique and wonderful KATE BUSH.

Melanie Stevens, HR Advisor

I’d like to nominate vegan athlete, Fiona Oakes. When I went vegan she was a great inspiration to me and she helped spur me on to run a half marathon. Like her, I wanted to prove that a vegan diet doesn’t stop us from being strong, healthy and agile. She’s passionate about animals and has her own rescue sanctuary (Tower Hill Stables) with all sorts of animals rescued from abuse and exploitation, and she now looks after about 400 of them!

Sarah Burden, Marketing & Communications Manager

Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, is truly an inspiration for me, and someone who is apt to be included for International Women’s Day. She has fought and continues to fight for the rights of women of all ages. She has made me realise how fortunate we are in the UK to have all of the rights that Malala fights so passionately for, including education and freedom of speech.

Angela Bradley, Facilities Manager

I had a book about Marie Curie as a very young girl back in the 70s. I remember being excited that a woman had done such amazing work in this field and also feeling very sad that her work led to her early death. Bearing in mind the decade, I think her work was the one thing that broke the stereotype for me at that time in both my home and school environments.

Andy Bryan, Fundraising Communications officer

I’d like to nominate Meryl Streep, not only because she is an amazing actor, who has been on the top of her game for the last 30 years, but also because of her charity work and incredible Oscars speech. She is funny, smart, talented and she cares a great deal about others.

Helena Holt, Chief Executive

American actress, Frances McDormand, made a bold and potentially lasting impact on Hollywood history this week with her rallying cry for ‘inclusion riders’ in industry contracts - a call for gender and racial parity. She used her platform as an Academy Award winner to highlight issues of inequality and to make a meaningful difference to those who are not well represented in the industry.

Naomi Ziewe Palmer, Digital Content Officer

Sophia Duleep Singh was the daughter of a Maharaja whose godmother was Queen Victoria. Despite her wealth and class, she helped pioneer the cause for women’s rights in England and in the colonies, participating in women’s suffrage and using her wealth and socialite status to give voice to those who did not have it.

Louise Newbery, Fundraising Administrator

Over a number of years, keen supporter, Mary Phillips, has raised nearly £30,000 for Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Air Ambulance, which she splits between the two charities - and all through tractor rallies. Despite her glamour, Mary has been out in her tractor raising money in all weathers and is well known in her community. She was even awarded a BEM in the Queen’s Honours list in 2016. She’s made an incredible difference to others through her dedicated fundraising.

Ray Staines, Totnes Shop Manager

For me it’s Rosa Parks, who was an activist during the American Civil Rights Movement, whom the United States Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

Kim-marie Veasey, Dartmouth Shop Manager

It has to be English ballerina, Margot Fonteyn. She inspired me as a little girl and her story is extraordinary, wonderful, but also sad. She spent her career as a dancer with the royal Ballet, and was appointed Prima Ballerina Assoluta of the company by the Queen. This is a rare honour as a dancer - especially in her time. She refused to give into prejudice and unjustifiable inequality.

Molly, resident DAA pup

Judy the English Pointer is Molly’s inspiration. Judy chanced her life many times to protect British PoWs during World War Two. “Woof,” says Molly.

Not all our student volunteers are in their teens, we wanted to speak to chat to Carol and Terry who are a fanastic couple who donate a lot of their time to the charity wihle studying too.

How did you hear about Devon Air Ambulance?

Terry noticed the shop and Googled the Devon Air Ambulance to find out more about the charity.

What made you volunteer for the charity?

We had both already been shop volunteers for another charity, but we wanted more varied roles, so we decided to try the Devon Air Ambulance shop as it was new and the people we spoke with were really friendly.

What are you currently studying?

Terry is currently studying City and Guilds English Level 2 and I have just completed my BTEC Level 2 in Customer Service through Derby College which is offered as part of the volunteering role with the Devon Air Ambulance.

What are your future aspirations?

We hope to complete more retail qualifications through the programme offered through the Devon Air Ambulance shop. There are a range of NVQ modules such as Retail Skills, Team Leading and Warehousing.

What do you think are the main benefits of volunteering for us?

We both really enjoy volunteering and we have developed lots of confidence and experience though it. We undertake a variety of different tasks and activities and as a result have gained plenty of customer service experience and Terry has also improved his communication skills.

And do you think Devon Air Ambulance has helped you to get closer to your future goals?

Yes, volunteering has given us the confidence to begin our studies and the staff and volunteers have encouraged us to do this.

What advice would you give to any students thinking about volunteering?

Give it a try!

So there we have a it! A week in the lives of some of our brilliant volunteers.

If you're interested in using a little free time by supporting the charity, whether or not you are studying, then do find out more about ways you can help. If, like Carol and Terry, you would like to find out more about developing qualifications as part of your volunteering experience, then we'd love to hear from you.

It's day 4 of this year's Student Volunteering Week, and we're taking 5 minutes out of Ashley Birch's busy day to ask him a few questions about how he's getting on.

How did you hear about DAAT?

I was once a Devon Air Ambulance patient myself when I needed to be transferred between hospitals for treatment myself.

What inspired you to volunteer for the charity?

I love the Charity and the lifesaving work that it does. I wanted to give something back having had first-hand experience with the charity myself.

What were you studying at the time of volunteering for DAAT?

I was studying Entry Level Maths at City College Plymouth.

What are your future aspirations?

I hope to complete my course then and then get a place on an Access Course so I can go to university. I would like to either go into teaching or into the health sector.

What do you think are the main benefits of volunteering for DAAT?

I have found volunteering extremely beneficial. Working on the till has really helped me improve my maths. I have also gained important customer service experience and grown a lot in confidence. I have been able to use my volunteering as a placement as part of my course.

And do you think your experience with the charity has helped you in any way to get closer to your goals?

Yes, it has. I have passed one qualification since joining and I am now onto the next. My teachers have commented that they have noticed the improvement since I began volunteering and I generally feel much more confident than I was before.

What advice would you give to any students thinking about volunteering?

Go for it! I love volunteering in the shop because I am always learning new things and meeting new people.

It's clear from Ashley's experience that he has been able to develop his practical skills as well as his overall confidence, simply by donating a little of his time and energy to supporting others who might share his experience.

We're always on the look out for fantastic people who are willing to donate their time and energy to the charity.

James is a Plymouth University student who has kindly commited some of his free time to supporting the charity. He shares his experiences with us this Student Volunteering Week in a 2-minute chat.

How did you hear about DAAT?

I read about Devon Air Ambulance in the Plymouth University Volunteering Newsletter, which is full of great opportunities for young people and those who are studying.

What inspired you to volunteer for Devon Air Ambulance?

I've always wanted to become a little more charitable and to build my confident as I approach my 20s, and volunteering is a great way to achieve these aims.

What were you studying at the time of volunteering for DAAT?

Right now I'm studying Civil Engineering at Plymouth University.

What are your future aspirations?

I'm really keen to design a structure on the Tana River in Kenya to control seasonal flooding.

What do you think are the main benefits of volunteering for DAAT?

Volunteering allows you to meet all sorts of new people and to help those who find themselves in difficulty by lending your time and energy to an organisation.

And do you think DAAT helped you to get closer to your goals?

Yes, definitely. It has been a rewarding experience so far.

What advice would you give to any students thinking about volunteering?

Just do it!

So there we have it - endorsement from a future engineer! Would you like to get involved as a volunteer in one of our shops? We depend upon the incredible help of our supporters who work hard to serve Devon's communities. Find out more about getting involved or contact us with your questions - we'd love to hear from you.

Fundraising soars for Devon Air Ambulance

Otter Garden Centres in Ottery St Mary has announced the total raised for its charity of the year 2017, Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

The East Devon branch of the family-run garden centre ran various fundraising activities across the year to achieve an impressive total of over £7,500.

£700 came from donations to the annual Memory Tree, where customers buy a red or gold ribbon to attach to a Christmas tree in memory of loved ones. £1,000 was raised from parking donations for Ottery St Mary’s Tar Barrels event, with a matching amount donated to the Tar Barrels Carnival Committee.

Team Leader Mary Harrison, who helps coordinate the fundraising, said: “As well as customer donations, members of staff took part in a variety of staff events. These included two evening quizzes and a very popular raffle to win a cake made by a staff member’s wife.”

In addition, donations from generous visitors to Santa’s Grotto at Christmas reached over £3,250, swelling the total considerably.

DAA Fundraising Manager, Tracy Owen commented: “We are extremely grateful to Otter Garden Centres for all their support throughout 2017 and delighted that the hard work of the charity team at the Ottery St Mary branch paid off. The support of Devon businesses like Otter Garden Centres is crucial to the continuing provision of our service, which is there for anyone who should need it, be that a medical emergency or trauma related."

Otter Garden Centres Torbay branch also raised funds for the charity during 2017 and between the two branches a grand total of over £12,000 is being handed over to Devon Air Ambulance.

“Our annual charity fundraising is an important part of our business, each year we raise thousands for local and national charities through donations from staff and customers and we would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who puts their hand in their pocket to help us along the way.” explained Ottery General Manager, John Giblin.“

Cara Jones chats to Zack, a student volunteer who was keen to lend his time and energy to a worthy cause.

How did you hear about DAAT?

My mum told me about the charity shop and she said it would be a nice place to work because it had such friendly staff. She thought it would be a good place to volunteer too as she had visited there fairly often.

What inspired you to volunteer for DAAT?

I was at college at the time and I wanted to get some workplace experience to help boost my confidence in talking/socialising with people. I had considered dropping out of college, but also I wanted to volunteer specifically at DAAT as a family friend was thrown off a horse on Dartmoor many years ago and needed to be rescued as she had been so badly injured.

Devon Air Ambulance managed to get there and help quickly, and she didn't have to wait for a land ambulance. Because of this and the other stories I have heard about the charity I thought it would be good to volunteer as I had already seen where the money and support went.

What were you studying at the time of volunteering for DAAT?

I was studying Art and Design, specialising in Graphic Design. My interest was mainly in Film and Photography as well as some poster design.

What are your future aspirations?

Right now I'm thinking about what I want to achieve and my possible career direction. Currently I am looking at the possiblity of going into Civil Engineering or Architecture, as I want a career that makes an impact on the world, helping to make a positive difference to people, not just in this country, but elsewhere too.

What do you think are the main benefits for volunteering with us?

Well, first of all it is very good for getting experience, which can really help make the leap from education to work. Also it's good to support a very local charity where you can see the result of the efforts and fundraising, which is to keep the helicopters flying. With a lot of other charities you need to look into where time and money has helped, bit with DAA it's very obvious. Finally, I would also say it is a good way to make a few new friends and build up confidence as it did with me.

And do you think volunteering has helped you to get closer to your future goals?

Volunteering has definitely helped some of my goals to become clearer and feel more obtainable. An important goal for me is to make an impact on the world, and volunteering helped me to realise it isn't all about building huge housing projects in Kenya, or driving lorry fulls of supplies to Syria, you can make a difference by doing something as simple as serving and helping customers in a shop.

By lending time you can help people in distress and save lives and I think that knowledge has helped me to realise that my goal of changing the world can be achieved in a variety of ways.

What advice would you give to any students thinking about volunteering?

I would say that even if it's just a few hours a week it is a worthwhile experience - not just for whatever career you're purusing, but the experience will help you to become more confident and possibly make some new friends and connections, all whilst working for a charity which saves and helps hundreds of lives every year.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer for the charity? There are lots of ways to help. Contact us or have a look at our volunteering booklet for more opportunities.

Volunteer Co-ordinator, Cara Jones, chats to Natalia Lopes, one of Devon Air Ambulance's fantastic student volunteers. Here's what Natalie had to say about her experience with the charity.

How did you hear about Devon Air Ambulance?

I originally heard about Devon Air Ambulance from my mother-in-law, who moved to Devon from the Midlands,. She was a member of the Women's Institute, an organisation that often promotes events together with DAAT.

What inspired you to volunteer for Devon Air Ambulance?

After I'd arrived in England from Brazil, one of the first things that I noticed was how volunteering was such an important institution. I started noticing how many events and organisations were made a reality inspired by the desire of volunteers to work to contribute to a better society. I too felt an urge to be a part of the movement and to connect to the community in which I live.

What are you studying while volunteering for DAAT?

I'm studying IT Skills and Administration. It can be challenging to fit in studying, working and being a volunteer, but once I organised my life and created a proper schedule, my commitments to the causes I believed in helped me to feel rewarded and fulfilled.

What are your future aspirations?

My future aspirations are to become fully-integrated into the community where I live and to feel that I am making a positive impact on the people around me, alongside pursuing a career as an Administrative Assistant or Secretary.

What do you think are the main benefits of volunteering for Devon Air Ambulance?

There are a lot of benefits to volunteering in general, and more specifically for DAAT. My experience has given me the opportunity to improve my social and communication skills, develop my sense of teamwork and leadership, and it has introduced me to new people who share similar passions and values.

But the main benefits of volunteering for DAAT is that you know your work, time and efforts are going towards a cause that impact the health and well-being of your community, and that everyone who is involved with the charity has the same ambition to positively contribute to the people of Devon by using their abilities. It is a passion you can see in every single one of the employees, supporters and volunteers.

How has volunteering helped you to get closer to your goals?

I believe that by working within a charity as a volunteer you can employ your personal abilities to bring about great results. That in itself is already fulfilling, but also you are introduced to new people, new ideals and new approaches that can only improve your chances of creating the building blocks for your career, and enhancing your professional as well as your personal life.

What advice would you give to any students thinking about volunteering?

Just do it! You will only receive positive outcomes from the experience. Volunteering will introduce you to people with a similar mindset to you and you'll experience the rewards of contributing to your community as well as having a healthy impact on your professional skills and development.

Are you a volunteer who would like to share your experience with Devon Air Ambulance? Do drop us a line; we're always keen to share inspiring stories.

Our brand new Devon Air Ambulance charity shop with a difference opens this Saturday. It will join Topsham as the second of two vintage specialist DAA shops in the county.

We have a lovely assortment of goodies ready and waiting in the warehouse, but as always, we need more! If you have a donation that you think would be a great addition to our new shop then just pop your donation into any one of our Devon shops, and we'll make sure it gets to the right place.

If you have something you'd like to donate but you're not sure it's vintage, pop it in to us anyway and we can always sell it on one of our other 18 Devon-wide shops

Donors can look out for mirrors, paintings, bric-a-brac, linen, books, music, jewellery, shoes, hats, handbags, toys - anything with a little charm that deserves a second lease of life in our new vintage shop.

'We're really excited about opening the doors to our newest shop,' says Retail Operations Manager, Chrissie Peel. 'Dartmouth is such a great little town and the perfect setting for our vintage and variety shop."

Shoppers can hunt for hidden gems, that beloved childhood book, classic tableware or novel ornaments, or perhaps revive a look with a quirky vintage fashion item.

So pop down on Saturday 10 February to say hello to our new team to have a browse, we'd love to see you.

Below are a couple sneaky peaks of some of the items... Share your fantastic vintage finds on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Every year, our helicopters and paramedic crew attend hundreds of missions the length and breadth of Devon. In 2017 we assisted 990 patients, 12% of whom were children and infants.

We’ve attended incidents from traffic collisions and motorcross accidents to equestrian and sports injuries. Accidents and medical incidents can befall anyone at any time, and everyone who lives in Devon is eligible to be helped by us – and we want to get to each patient as quickly as possible.

Patient confidentiality

Because of patient confidentiality we don’t have access to more than the most general information about the missions our crews attend: the general location of the incident, whether the incident is medical or trauma, or the patient adult or a child. For this reason, we only hear the full stories of around 15% of the patients and their families who approach us to tell us about their experiences.

As an independent charity we receive no government funding, therefore we depend 100% upon our fundraisers, donors and supporters to keep our helicopters flying.

It costs over £5.5 million a year to operate our service, but it’s our patients’ stories that help potential supporters to understand that we are there for the people of Devon and the importance of keeping us there.

Do you have a story to share – either as a patient, or as a supporter? Contact us to tell us about your Devon Air Ambulance experience.

Our supporter promise

We respect our supporters’ data and we adhere to recent legal changes brought in by GDPR, which replaces the Data Protection Act. Therefore, our sponsors and supporters can feel reassured their information is protected by us.

The continued support of those who lend their time and energy to the charity is very important to us, which is why our supporter promise is at the centre of everything we do:

We don’t share or sell any of our supporters’ data

We treat our supporters as they wish to be treated

The only mail we send out is our Helipad magazine up to four times a year to keep our supporters up to date with our activities and local interest

We send monthly eNewsletters – only to supporters who have asked to receive them

We don’t authorise anyone to go door-to-door on our behalf

The only representatives from the charity who may ask for your personal information are our lottery canvassers, but only if you choose to join

We do not employ third party companies to phone our supporters asking for more information, or to cold call

We do not pay commission to anyone collecting our boxes or cheques on our behalf

If you have any questions about our Supporter Promise, then do speak to one of our team on 01392 466666 and we will be happy to answer them.

Few sights are more complelling than a frosted moorland scene, or a soothing seascape beneath a chill winter sky. A wintry stroll, either to walk off a hearty pub lunch or in advance of one, is also one of the best ways to enjoy such settings, and Devon has not shortage of rural and rugged views.

With the allure of fresh air and cool light, outdoor activities such as riding and sports have a particular draw, but it’s important to be conscious that winter activities present certain hazards that we’re keen to avoid in order to minimise your chances of needing the help of Devon Air Ambulance.

Trips and falls

Devon’s rocky coast and Dartmoor and Exmoor are incredibly lovely, and few sights are more spectacular than those that can be enjoyed from the top of one of the tors or from a rocky vantage point. But even those who are sure of foot have been tripped up by unexpected gusts of wind, icy patches of rock, or simply not quite getting the expected foothold. Simple slips can turn a pleasant outing into a broken ankle, which can soon turn a bad situation into something quite complicated.

If you are heading out and about and plan to head off-piste and onto the cliffs, outcrops, or any of Devon’s other high points and highlights, then there are some simple steps to take to ensure you don’t take a misstep.

The right weather

A shift in the weather can turn a sunny stroll into something much less pleasant if you take a tumble – especially if you are somewhere exposed and potentially hostile like Dartmoor or Exmoor. Although it’s great to be spontaneous, planning the timing of your outing is important to get the best of the weather if you can. Fog, mist, high winds, ice, snow and rain are typical of winter weather and can make walking treacherous - even for those with a great deal of hiking experience. A simple weather check can help minimise the chances of a mishap and would be a far more pleasant walking experience too.

The right kit and clothing

Of course, many an experienced walker would say there is no such things a bad weather, just the wrong clothing and kit. Naturally it’s best to prepare for your winter expedition – no matter how modest - with the appropriate layers and weather-ready gear. And if you are planning to head further afield than a post roast Sunday stroll permits, a compass, a good map in a weather-proof mapholder, torch, adequate provisions and a first aid kit are just a few of the basics that experts recommend.

The right planning

The simplest thing you can do pre-walk is let someone know where you are going and how long you will be. That way if your plans do go awry, and you’re out of range or phone battery, then someone can raise the alarm.

Download the Devon Air Ambulance app

If you are heading anywhere in Devon, simply download the Devon Air Ambulance app, which is currently available for Android phones and an updated version will be available for iPhones in 2018. The app pinpoints your grid reference so you can alert someone with your location if you do find you get into difficulty.

Equestrian accidents

Horse riding is very popular at any time of year, but icy conditions and limited daylight hours can make riding more dangerous. As with walking (above), taking the same precautions when you head out are essential, but it’s important for country drivers to be mindful too. When the sun is low in the sky and visibility it poor, it can increase the chances of not seeing a rider, or startling a horse. Therefore, it’s important to drive with caution around country lanes and be considerate when passing a horse and rider by giving them ample space and travelling at a low speed.

Road collisions

Unfortunately, we attended 179 trauma incidents involving injury to a cyclist, vehicle driver or passenger in 2017, all of which turned possibly an ordinary day for an individual and their family into one that is memorable for the wrong reasons.

Although traffic collisions are hard to predict, unfortunately they contribute significantly to our statistics. As well as the usual sensible steps all drivers should take there are some straightforward things to consider to reduce the chances of a collision that are arguably distinct to winter travel. These are:

Planning for adverse weather conditions

Weather passes through the West Country quickly, and a sunny day can quickly turn to an icy deluge that tumbles off the moors. Being cautious with stopping distances in rain, snow and ice, particularly at speed, is an essential consideration when negotiating a county with more miles of road than virtually anywhere else in the UK.

Shorter daylight hours

Dark winter mornings and short afternoons can mean the sun is very low in the sky at crucial driving times such as on the commute. This can be dazzling in certain weather and can make driving difficult, so having that extra level of awareness is important.

Winter in Devon is a beautiful and enjoyable time of year and we hope the likelihood of your needing our services are minimal. All the same, one or two simple steps are often what stand between a normal day and a tragedy.

Hall and Woodhouse announces two year Charity Partnership with local Air Ambulances

Leading independent brewer, Hall & Woodhouse, is delighted to announce it has chosen eight local air ambulance charities as its Charity Partner for the next two years.

Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance, Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance, London’s Air Ambulance, Thames Valley Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance are all set to be equal beneficiaries of the fundraising partnership.

Fifty-one Hall & Woodhouse public houses are taking part in supporting the life-saving services, with an aim of raising in the region of £250,000 over the two year period. This will be achieved through a number of fund-raising activities organised by each of the local public houses, such as quiz nights, sponsored events, fun days and sports tournaments. All monies raised will be equally split between each charity enabling them to fund the cost of missions, to further enhance their operations or purchase new items of specialist equipment.

Lucinda Gray, sixth-generation of the Woodhouse family and Hall & Woodhouse Charity Champion, commented: “As a company that places community at the heart of our business, supporting worthy causes is very important to Hall & Woodhouse. These local air ambulance charities cover the counties where our public houses are located and each of them work tirelessly to care for critically ill or injured patients within our community. We are extremely proud to have so many of our public houses backing the campaign and being able to support this wonderful cause.

“Having raised a phenomenal £248,000 for Macmillan in 2013/14, and then in excess of £210,000 for Together with Short Lives in 2016/18(final number yet to be confirmed), I know our team and guests will do everything they can to exceed these totals over the next two years.”

Tracy Owen, Devon Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager said:

“We are so excited that Hall & Woodhouse have chosen us as their new Charity Partner. The fact that Hall & Woodhouse team members voted to support us, means so much and we believe that this relationship will be very special. Corporate support is a vital aspect of our fundraising and enables us to develop and grow our service further”.

Fundraising for the air ambulances will begin in February 2018 and in March some of the public houses will be taking part in ‘The World’s Biggest Pub Quiz’, an event being led by PubAid.

Friends and family gather to rock and roll in memory of Luke

In memory of Luke Adams

LUKE ADAMS

23/12/1993 - 12/09/2017

There is no single word that describes Luke, he was an animated and high-spirited person who never took off his cheesy grin. Luke was a person that would befriend anyone and everyone. This led to him being a tough person to pin down, whether he was out playing football for North Molton, South Molton and even Chittlehampton or camping at car shows with the Devon Cruisers or just having a pint. With his energetic social life, it’s a wonder he had any time for work, but Luke worked hard at a local glass facility and climbed the ranks to gain the Supervisor title.

The Devon Cruisers

One of Luke’s many extra curricula clubs donated £300 to show their support and gratitude for the actions of Devon Air Ambulance. With Luke being a keen Elvis Presley fan, an Elvis Tribute evening is being held in aid of Devon Air Ambulance. The event will be held on the 31st March 2018 at Bishops Nympton Parish Hall, as Luke was a resident of the Village and helped to build the hall. This event will be a perfect opportunity to remember an all-round great guy, raise some money for a Charity and enjoy some Rock n’ Roll!

On behalf of the Devon air Ambulance we wish the friends and family he leaves behind a fun-filled evening.
