Google’s Drive will allow users to store photos, videos and content on its Web based server and let users access and share their files easily through Web-connected devices from anywhere. This service would be free for basic storage and larger storage space will come with a fee. Google is likely to release a Google Drive Android app.

The Wall Street Journal reported, “If a person wants to email a video shot from a smartphone, for instance, he can upload it to the Web through the Drive mobile app and email people a link to the video rather than a bulky file.”

Google’s expected similar service GDrive was first rumored around 1997, but it was never launched. This time, sources say that Google will definitely bring out Drive which would rival the other cloud based storage services like Drop Box, Apple’s iCloud and Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

The company has sent out invitations for the “Windows 8 Consumer Preview” event to be held at the Mobile World Congress, a trade show for mobile gadgets. Consumer Preview is the name given to the beta version of the Windows 8 operating system by Microsoft. Sources say that the company is working towards turning Windows 8 into a tablet operating system as well as one that runs on PCs. So, Microsoft has its reasons to unveil Windows 8 beta at a show focused on mobile devices.

Windows 8 will feature a new touch- centric Metro user interface. It may also do away with the iconic start button that Windows users are familiar with. There are now rumors that ARM based tablets too can run the full OS.

In the tablet arena, Microsoft may face stiff competition from Apple’s iPad and Google’s Android tablets. During his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer opined that Windows 8 on tablets will challenge those rival devices by its superior functionality. “People don’t want to compromise on what they have today. They want the best of what they have, and the best of what they want,” he told the audience.

‘Solve for X’ originated offline as a three day event for a selected group of fifty people in California last week, co-hosted by Google’s Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt. Google’s rapid evaluator, Richard DeVaul, explained what was discussed at the event in a Google+ post. “The conference is driven by short, technology rich presentations on topics ranging from low-energy, low-cost water desalinization to stretchable silicon sensor on skin,” he wrote.

Nearly a week after its intimate gathering, Google has now invited the world to join the conversation on its website.

The report was based on the analysis of more than 214 million different app launches during the months of November and December 2011 and it shows that iOS apps crashed 162 million times and Android apps, on the other hand, crashed only 52 million times. This implies that iOS apps crashed three times as much as the Android apps.

Crittercism commented that the crash of iOS apps is mainly due to the upgradation of Apple’s operating system iOS 5.0 to a newer version iOS 5.0.1. It claimed that there may be some compatibility issues that might have occurred with the upgradation.

Crittercism analyzed apps under three categories. Under the ‘first quartile of apps’, Android users had 0.15% of app crashes as compared to Apple’s 0.51%. Under the ‘second quartile of apps’, Android’s crashes were 0.73% and Apple’s crashes were 1.47%. Under the ‘third quartile of apps’, Android app crashes extended to 2.97% whereas Apple’s were 3.66%

According to IDC, Apple has jumped up two places and reached the third position in global smartphone shipments for the year 2011. Great interest in iPhone 4S, which increased iPhone sales by 128 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, is considered as the primary reason for Apple to reach this spot.

The IDC’s numbers suggest that, Apple shipped 37 million units in Q4 2011, which secured 8.7% of the market share. Nokia holds the first place with a 27% market share, followed by Samsung with 21.3%, Apple with 6%, LG with 5.7% and ZTE with 4.3% for the year 2011.

“The introduction of high-growth products such as the iPhone 4S, which shipped in the fourth quarter, bolstered smartphone growth. Yet overall market growth fell to its lowest point since 3Q09 when the global economic recession was in full bloom.”said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker.

The report took into account the activation of smartphones and tablet devices by many of the Fortune clients. The report revealed that iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 were the top three products for enterprise activation. 64% of activated smartphones and 94% of tablets in Q4 2011 were Apple iOS devices.

Android accounted for 35% of all smartphone activations and 6% of tablet activations. Samsung Galaxy S II was the top Android device activated in the quarter.This report clearly shows that the enterprise clients prefer Apple products despite Android’s gains in the consumer market share.

John Herrema, Good technology’s SVP of Corporate Strategy said, “As we expected, iPhone activations slowed in Q3 in anticipation of the iPhone 4S and then jumped significantly immediately after its launch, with 31 percent of Q4 activations coming from that device alone.
