Afternoon sun shines into the crowd during a concert at the Bud Light Hotel on Super Sunday during Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans

Here is something that I meant to share back in February, but between my recent branding facelift and assignment work, it ended up on the back burner.

These are images that I snapped on my iPhone while in New Orleans shooting marketing material for the Bud Light Hotel during Super Bowl XLVII.

Leading up to the big weekend, thousands of man hours went into completely rebranding, and transforming the hotel into the premier place to be for concerts, and parties during the festivities.

The Bud Light Hotel featured three days of amazing concert performances by Big Boi, Lil Wayne, Vintage Trouble, Flo Rida, Pit Bull, Lee Brice, Stevie Wonder, Gary Clark Jr., and Janelle Monae, as well as a carne asada competition, and nightly VIP parties featuring plenty of pro athletes and celebrities to hang out with.

As you can see from these photos, it was a very blue weekend in the city that’s known for it’s purple, gold, and green – but as you would expect, the energy was fantastic.

A recent assignment sent me to West, Texas for a couple of days to cover a segment of the volunteer efforts underway after the tragic fertilizer plant explosion.

These are a few photos that I snapped along the way with my iPhone on day two, when we were allowed into the “Hot Zone” so the volunteers could drop off cases of water.

The fertilizer plant only had a million in liability coverage, which means the victims really need all the help they can get, so please consider lending a hand through a reputable organization such as the ones below:

Every year, some friends of ours throw a great backyard crawfish boil. Even though I don’t eat these things, it’s always a fun group to spend a Saturday afternoon with.

Portrait: Sean Springtime Walk Around Town Lake In The Works Analog Chimping

I currently have a handful of projects that I’m excited to be working on, and the two images above are from one of those.

This project is about a local artist, who has got to be one of the hardest working creatives I’ve ever met.

He has become popular for the work that he does, gaining a nice amount of media attention in the U.S. and Internationally, which is how I got brought into the mix.

Originally, the idea was a for a few conceptual editorial portraits, but I suggested getting deeper by including some narrative driven imagery to go along with the story (which you’ll be able to read here in a few months).

Another interesting project that I’m working happens to be the result of a last minute experimental shot that I did while on an assignment last year.

I knew the client was never going to use it, but I had some extra time at the end of the shoot, and It was simply a shot that I wanted personally, so I didn’t think much of it at the time.

Fast forward to an assignment earlier this year where I was given the chance to do it again, and now the vision has set in, and the collection is growing.

It’s a body of work that I can’t wait to show off – but at the same time, it’s a little intimidating because A) it’s not my usual thing, and B) will (hopefully) introduce me to an entirely new market.

After months of design work, I’m happy to introduce the all new me (professionally speaking).

Thanks to the great minds at DeRouen & Co, I’ve got soul, and I’m super bad.

Ever since my wife brilliantly suggested the use of a sugar skull in my branding, it’s caught attention, and helped get me on the good foot with some great clients, so I don’t plan on letting it go anytime soon.

Since it’s inception, I’ve felt the calavera has been great representation of not only myself, but my style of work.

Now that the new logo has evolved to feature one of my favorite tattoos (and the one that gets the most compliments), I couldn’t be happier, and feel more at home with my new look.

But That’s Not All!

To kick off the new branding we also launched a new site and blog design (which you’re looking at) chock full of new work (with more on the way).

As usual when I walk into an environment to make a portrait, I rarely know what I’m going to be working with – but that’s part of the fun. I get to take someone’s everyday environment that they may feel is boring and lack-luster, and I get to make it look interesting. For some assignments, it’s easier than others, but as an editorial portrait photographer, that’s my job. I’m there to make something out of nothing.

When I visited with Dr. John Barany, a retired pulmonologist in Yakima, Washington, I took very little gear with me. No real lighting to speak of, and just a camera with one lens. A lot of times, I like to work a little loose, yet be versatile and agile enough to take advantage of whatever the situation may be.

His shop is filled with the smell of wood, with shavings covering every inch of floor, and I’m covered in sawdust before the shop door even closes behind me.

I shot a few frames in the upstairs work area where large wooden sculptures and bowls lay around in various states of completion as they cure between stages. Good photos, but I was working under top-down fluorescent lighting, so it they were a bit too flat for my taste.

We then headed downstairs into another part of his workshop where the wooden art begins it’s new life. Some of the wood that he works with is so large he had to modify this large lathe to add the horsepower needed in order to spin the heavier logs that he frequently works with.

As I wandered into a dark corner of the shop near the big lathe, things were looking ok, but not super great – then Dr. Barany clicks on the warm tungsten lamp over the lathe to talk a little about the large hunk of wood that he was currently working on.

Warm tungsten and cool flourescent, compimented by the cool blue tones in the room and Dr. Barany’s red shirt – *this* was my shot. This is what I had been looking for.

In this portrait, he’s standing next to the giant lathe that he uses to turn massive hunks of wood into bowls, chalices, and various other works that are found in his gallery and online.

I always enjoy hearing the stories, inspiration, and process behind art work, especially from the artists themselves, and Dr. Barany was generous in showing me through his gallery, pointing out various pieces
