there is some irony in bicycle bell law. thats what this animated PSA is all about..... while bike bells are futile methods of alerting automobilists to the presence of cyclists on the road, they are required by law. ... and while they are quite useful in alerting pedestrians of approaching bikes, it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk. enjoy.

Do you know what a chicane is?

This 24 second Streetfilms stop-animation can show you almost as fast as I can describe it. A chicane is a sequence of tight curves in a roadway used to slow cars. Sidewalk extensions jog from one side of a street to the other to create a circuitous route. Literally, the word chicane comes from the German word schikane, meaning harassment.

... and an all-around success. Thanks goes out to all our volunteer staffers and the awesome participants - youth and adults!

In case you are reading this and weren't there, on December 2, 2007 we had a great one-day animation crash course at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. Participants young and old came together in North Troy from different parts of the capital region to learn the magic of stop-motion... do-it-yourself - style.

We started with a quick media literacy lesson - talking about the ever-presence of media messaging and advertising, and watching some examples of youth-produced media. Then we split into three groups and made our short animations -

First Animation Crash Course a success!!

DIY Animation Workshop and MNN Youth Channel did a 1.5 hour workshop at this years GMC, on February 24, 2007. About 50 people ended up coming to our session, which overwhelmed us, at first. Luckily we were able to channel the chaotic energy that 50 (mostly) strangers bring to a cramped classroom into some collective creativity. I for one thought it went really well, considering it was a total experiment. We have done workshops with kids over 10 or so weeks, but never gathered a lot of people in one room and tried to make something cohesive as a large group WHILE actually teaching some stuff.
heres a silly little clip of me before the workshop.

First, we showed some animations on the projector from these great people: eatpes.com, leobridlefilms.co.uk, and meerkatmedia.org. That gave everyone a little bit of an idea of where we were coming from, in terms of using objects and collage materials and translating wacky ideas into the language of stop-motion. We also shared the amazing resource that is Framethief - its a mac-based little free app. that allows you to capture frames from a digital camera and export them into a quicktime movie.

Then together as a big group, we created a character. The character ended up being a street musician/dancer that was a robot. Then we split into two groups - each with the challenge of animating a short story about this robot. Watch what we made here. Some people made backgrounds; some made moving objects; and others made the robot. Then we all came together to improvise a couple scenes. It was lots of fun.

So - THANKS to all participants!!!! We PROMISE to do more of this type of thing... maybe at the Allied Media Conference in June 07 in Detroit.
