Bimini – “Tank Top Bum Boys” | Released June 5, 2026

Bimini’s debut single, “Tank Top Bum Boys,” takes its title from a slur historically directed at working-class queer men in Britain, infamously used by Boris Johnson in his column in the Daily Telegraph in 1998. In typical Bimini-style, they decided to use the word as a term of endearment.

The song came just weeks after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that trans people are not legally protected as their gender under the Equality Act — and only days after Reform U.K. began removing Pride flags from public buildings.

Australian pop artist Ivoris is back with a sparkling crush confession. “Making someone blush is such a superpower,” she says, “if you’ve made someone’s blood rush to their cheeks, it’s like you’ve done something magical to their heart.”

This month, the CD Baby team attended the American Association of Independent Music’s (A2IM) Indie Week — the world’s largest conference and networking event dedicated to independent music. During the week, our president Molly Neuman joined Jay Gilbert of the Your Morning Coffee podcast to discuss her outlook on artist independence in 2026.

Here’s what Molly had to say.

Jay: The word independent used to mean something specific — no major label involvement. Today, artists on major distributed deals call themselves indie. Does the word still have a meaning in 2026?

Molly: Absolutely. Independence is still a powerful term. But the nuance of what it means to be an independent artist is complicated, and people twist themselves up trying to treat it like a binary, which I don’t think it is.

Jay: CD Baby has processed billions of dollars in royalties. What does the data tell you about what actually separates artists who build sustainable careers from those who don’t?

Molly: It’s hard to know that there are any specific indicators or characteristics, but there are a lot of people who have not one stream on Spotify — and obviously that is reflective of a lot of dynamics in the industry — there’s a lot of music that nobody is listening to. But that’s why we’re focusing on artists who want to be serious about their career. 

Recently, we’ve been advising artists on ways to reach their first 1,000 streams on Spotify. And that entails taking the first steps to activate your community and become eligible for monetizing your music on the platform. We’re focused on helping artists build the core components of a launch pad.

Jay: Where do you think indie artists have the most meaningful leverage? 

Molly: For our emerging artists, I think it’s about starting strong. And I don’t think that’s a different outlook from when you and I started our music careers. Artists still need to tap into people that care. And that means A) making music there’s an audience for and B) really trying to connect people to it. 

Artists can make that happen in any number of ways — busking on the corner, booking shows, finding other artists you want to play with, or working up to a viral moment. But I don’t think any of that is easy to manufacture and I think that’s maybe where a lot of the wrong energy is focused right now.

Jay: You just touched on the importance of starting with great music that’s authentic. It reminded me of something that Jonathan Daniel once said — “if you give me a great song, my job is easy. If you give me a good song, my job is impossible.” Touch on that a bit more.

Molly: I think most of the businesses in our space, whether it’s distribution platforms, platforms like Bandcamp — even Spotify — we’re all struggling with the fact that there is so much more music than there are fans to listen to it. And now I think we’re complicating that with some of the new issues [like AI slop].

Jay: Not every artist aspires to be a superstar, or even make a living playing music and there’s nothing wrong with that. What about the artists that just want to write, record, and release their art?

Molly: When I started making music, in the earliest days, the commercial prospects were absolutely not there. We had no thought of making money as artists. We wanted to hang out with our friends, play shows with each other, and make up songs, which had an energy to it. At some point, someone was willing to pay $100 or $500 for a show and we started to see some royalties — and that felt surprising, not like the motivation, because we were coming from a specific anti-corporate culture underground. 

Now, looking at the industry, we have some really talented kids who might go to music business school or become performers or composers and sometimes they seem to want shortcuts to commercial success. There are no real shortcuts.

1. Play shows

One of the best ways to grow an audience for your music is performing live. The reason it works is because live shows both deepen the connection with fans who already know your music and provide critical exposure to new listeners. It’s an added benefit if shows feel less like promo and more a natural part of your creative process.

If you didn’t organize an official release show, plan that first. As you begin gaining traction and connections in your hometown, branch out to adjacent cities to reach new audiences. Organize shows every four weeks to maintain momentum.

Each format serves a different purpose. 

• A remix can help you reach an entirely new audience of the artist that creatively reimagines your track.
• A demo — the raw early recording of a song before it’s fully produced — gives your most dedicated fans the chance to see behind-the-scenes.

When deciding where to start, follow what’s already pulling at you. If there’s a demo recording you can’t stop coming back to, that’s a sign it’s worth releasing. If the song took on a new life through playing it live, record that version. If a remix with another artist has been in the back of your mind, make the call. 4. Build your email list

Of all the tools available to an independent artist, an email list is the one audience channel you actually own. While reaching your social media following depends on the algorithm, your email list provides a direct line to all your fans.

The key is giving fans a reason to sign up. Offer something worth exchanging an email address for — a cheap merch item like a sticker, pin, or magnet — and promote your list at shows, over social media, and on your website. 

Once fans are on your list, create a cadence for a newsletter and some routine topic pillars: upcoming live shows, life updates, stories from the road, goals of the month, and more.

5. Celebrate milestones with fans

Your wins can be just as exciting for fans. Whether it’s your first 1,000 streams or an editorial playlist placement, these milestones aren’t just personal achievements. They’re opportunities to make fans feel included in your story and deepen the sense of community around your music. 

When you hit a milestone, acknowledge the metric then tell a story about how you got there. Shout out specific fans, mentors, collaborators — anyone who helped along the way. Making your celebratory post personal and community-driven will give greater meaning to the numbers and signal to fans that there’s real momentum behind the music.

This guide walks you through a clear process to help you pull together a professional bio. That includes what to prepare before you write, how to structure your bio for different uses, and what to include.

Why a strong bio matters

Your artist bio is important for three main reasons. First, it’s the main source of truth for the industry to get to know you and your music directly from the source. Second, every update to your bio is an opportunity for you to set the scene behind a release – sharing the story, people, ideas, and inspirations that fueled your project. And third, it’s a place where you can build credibility – in a few hundred words you can demonstrate that you take your music seriously and prove your success.

5 things to prepare before you write

Don’t start writing your bio from scratch. You can speed up the drafting process and ensure your bio hits all the right points by preparing some materials ahead of time:

• All your catalog metadata: From lyrics and genre to track titles and release dates, have this information handy to cite in your bio – at least for your most recent or upcoming release.
• Resume: This doesn’t have to be a formal document, but prepare a list of your recent accomplishments and major projects.
• A narrative: Trying to cram your life story and your creative life philosophy into a couple hundred words will not work. Instead, settle on a story that’s rooted in an upcoming release, recent goals, an idea you’ve been obsessing over, or your overall artist brand. Find a core narrative element to build your bio around.
• A few readers: When in doubt, lean on friends! Find a few friends or mentors in the music scene to help you plan your bio and/or review it once it’s drafted. They can provide valuable feedback on whether you’re effectively describing your music, hooking the reader, making accurate comparisons, and more.
• Press quotes: Including strong press quotes can build credibility within your bio.

How to write your artist bio in 5 steps

Now you’re ready to start writing your bio. Follow these steps to get your draft together.

Step 1: Lead with who you are and what you sound like

Hook the reader fast. Lead with your genre, mood, and a sonic reference point, but don’t feel boxed in by convention, either. You can open with a quote, a metaphor, or a quick story. The goal is to grab a reader’s attention and quickly establish who you are and what kind of music you make.

Step 2: Tell your story

You won’t have space in your bio to tell your life story, so focus on that narrative angle you prepared. Anchoring your bio in that story should allow you to seamlessly pivot out to discuss accomplishments and how this story frames your most recent or upcoming release.

Step 3: Name your influences

Reference two to four well-known artist names to help people orient to your sound. The goal is to give the reader context around your music by connecting it with music they know. Be intentional about the artists you choose – for press purposes, include at least one or two contemporary artists. Then, if you make a playlist around your release, ensure those artists are on it, too.

Step 4: Highlight your achievements

Drawing from the list you prepared, include a few noteworthy accomplishments, releases, events, and more to demonstrate momentum. Here, you’re aiming to show, not tell. Instead of saying “a growing fanbase” or “excellent live shows” provide some key streaming or social media metrics, the number of shows you’ve recently played (and perhaps sold out), and so on. If you’re very early in your music journey, you can share your goals and the work you’ve put into achieving them. 

Step 5: Share your best press quotes

You can build credibility into your bio by including a series of press quotes. You can either cleverly weave them into the bio itself or list them below. If you’re still working up to press coverage, ask for quotes from collaborators, friends, and others. The goal is to gain credibility by demonstrating people care about your work.

Step 6: Close with what’s next

Don’t let your bio end looking backward. Close with something your reader can look forward to — an upcoming release, a tour, a collaboration, whatever’s on the horizon. It signals that you’re still growing and makes it clear the bio is current. That’s especially useful when you’re pitching to journalists: give them something their audience can anticipate, and you’ve just made their job easier and your story more timely.

Short, medium, or long? A quick-reference guide

Not all bios serve the same purpose. If you followed the steps above, your bio is probably sitting somewhere between 250-500 words. Edit it down if necessary, then work on reducing it to medium and short lengths for additional purposes. Having multiple versions of your bio will ensure you’re ready for every industry opportunity that comes your way.

Over 100 CD Baby artists have earned GRAMMY nominations in recent years, with 36 of them taking home the award in their category. The playing field is more open than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get nominated.

What are the Grammys?

The GRAMMY Awards recognize outstanding achievements in music. Put on by the Recording Academy of the United States, the GRAMMYs are the only major music awards that are peer-voted. That means winners are selected by the Recording Academy’s voting members, a community made up of singers, songwriters, producers, engineers, and other music professionals.

Crucially, the Academy selects nominees and winners based on holistic excellence and artistic merit — not just chart positions or streaming numbers.

How did the Grammys start?

Despite the popular perception of the Grammys as a night for music’s biggest stars, the awards actually emerged from inclusive, DIY intentions.

During the planning for the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s, music industry nominees were required to have sold either one million records or 250,000 albums. The music executives on the planning committee realized those sales thresholds would shut out many deserving artists. So they created their own organization — the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences — and their own award, the GRAMMY. The first ceremony was held on May 4, 1959.

What are the eligibility requirements for Grammy submissions?

The Grammys are completely open to all artists, but releases need to meet the following requirements:

• Release date: Music must have been distributed between August 31, 2025 and August 28, 2026.
• Length: For album submissions, a recording must contain at least five different tracks with a total playing time of 15 minutes, or a total playing time of 30 minutes regardless of track count. Singles have no length requirements.
• Format: A submitted recording must be available for sale in physical stores, via digital download, or on a recognized streaming platform. It must also meet the industry minimum technical standard of 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Each submitted song must have proper metadata (descriptive data about your music, including the artist name, track title, album, genre, and cover art), as well as International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs) for each track.
• Original Material: An album must be more than 75 percent unreleased material recorded within five years of the release date. 

Are collaborators and crew eligible too?

Yes. All credited artists including featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers are eligible to be nominated and win, at least in the Album of the Year category. As long as they’re credited on the release, they’re eligible. No minimum percentage of playing time required.

Before you submit anything, review your metadata, songwriter credits, ISRCs, and other release details.

What’s the difference between a Grammy entry and a nomination?

This distinction trips a lot of artists up, so let’s be clear.

An entry is a recording that has been formally submitted to the Recording Academy for GRAMMY consideration. If it meets the eligibility requirements, it’s placed on the ballot that goes to the Recording Academy’s voting members. Those voters then cast votes for the submissions they believe deserve a nomination. The entries that earn the most votes become nominees and are placed into their respective categories.

The Recording Academy receives more than 20,000 eligible entries during a single GRAMMY season. The Academy’s Awards staff review each submission manually to confirm eligibility. Being nominated — earning one of just five spots per category after that vetting process — is itself a significant achievement.

How are entries submitted for the Grammys?

Entries for GRAMMY consideration must be submitted by members of the Recording Academy — either Professional or Voting members — or by registered Media Companies (like record labels and music distributors). Each member or registered company has an account on the GRAMMY website where they can log in and submit entries during the Online Entry Period (OEP).

There is only one round to submit entries. If a recording isn’t formally entered before the OEP closes, it cannot be considered for a GRAMMY Award or nomination, and it won’t appear on any voting ballot. Submit early — the Recording Academy’s Awards team can help with questions, but only if there’s time left to act.

Fireside chat with Y.D.B.

The highlight of the week was a fireside chat between our president, Molly Neuman, and CD Baby artist Young Dirty Bastard (YDB) — the son of Wu-Tang Clan founding member Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The conversation explored a story that felt close to home: how to honor a legacy while forging a unique path forward.

For YDB, that entailed leading his own independent career while keeping his father’s story and music alive. While releasing original music of his own — and managing a staggering list of collaborations from SEGA to the NFL Network — he tours regularly with Wu-Tang Clan and represents his father at commemorative events. This year, he’ll attend the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to accept Wu-Tang Clan’s induction on his father’s behalf. In everything he does, YDB finds new ways to carry his father’s creativity forward — using legacy as an inspiration, not a limitation.

The CD Baby story follows a similar arc.
