Rosemary is famous – “Overnight Sensation (Overnight Jerk)” | Released June 3, 2026

LA-based indie pop artist Rosemary is famous is building a world that’s campy and nostalgic — it’s escapism at its finest. Drawing inspiration from icons like Marilyn Monroe, Cher, and Betty Boop, she writes songs that feel like a modern pop twist on something out of an old Hollywood movie.

“Overnight Sensation (Overnight Jerk)” tells the story of modern romance gone wrong — the moment the nobody you’re dating goes viral, becomes a star, and dumps you. Whimsical lyrics, upbeat production, and a killer sing-along chorus make this the unhinged revenge anthem of the summer.

Chris Moreno – “Burn Out” | Released June 5, 2026

Nashville-based Chris Moreno blends country roots with the melodic emotionality of early 2000s alternative rock. His new single “Burn Out” captures the push and pull of an unstable relationship and the feeling of trying to hold onto something already slipping away.

Atmospheric guitars, cinematic production, and a reflective hook give the track a nostalgic yet modern crossover feel. Fans of Goo Goo Golls and Mitchell Tenpenny will find a lot to love here.

Bimini – “Tank Top Bum Boys” | Released June 5, 2026

Bimini’s debut single, “Tank Top Bum Boys,” takes its title from a slur historically directed at working-class queer men in Britain, infamously used by Boris Johnson in his column in the Daily Telegraph in 1998. In typical Bimini-style, they decided to use the word as a term of endearment.

The song came just weeks after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that trans people are not legally protected as their gender under the Equality Act — and only days after Reform U.K. began removing Pride flags from public buildings.

Ivoris – “Make U Blush” | Released June 12, 2026

Australian pop artist Ivoris is back with a sparkling crush confession. “Making someone blush is such a superpower,” she says, “if you’ve made someone’s blood rush to their cheeks, it’s like you’ve done something magical to their heart.”

“Make U Blush” arrives alongside the announcement of Ivoris’ long-awaited debut album, Pour My Heart Out, due September 4th. An album, she says, built around one superpower, “being super romantic.”

Quinn Aiden & Kish – “Tiki-Taka” | Released June 12, 2026

Part Afropop, part commercial pop, “Tiki-Taka” has the sonic crossover fit for a track JBL used for a World Cup campaign — which featured the legendary Dutch soccer player Virgil Van Dijk.

Diva Smith – Sunny Surrender | Released June 12, 2026

By day Diva Smith is a preschool teacher in New York City. By night, she’s performing songs she’s been writing since she was a kid. Her debut EP, Sunny Surrender explores themes of growing up, first romance, and nostalgia.

City-based but country-hearted, Diva’s love of live instrumentation and slower living gives this EP a warmth and intimacy that’s all her own.

Marcus Kley – “Waiting” | Released June 12, 2026

Marcus Kley’s music exists in a self-described world of “Rom-Com Pop” — bubbly, heartfelt, and unapologetically romantic. Inspired by Japanese artists such as Fujii Kaze and YOASOBI, KLEY began studying Japanese in 2020, eventually attending a Japanese language school in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, to deepen his connection to the culture and music that inspired him.

“Waiting” was written after watching a Japanese romantic drama and captures the impatient excitement of falling in love and wanting the other person to finally admit their feelings. Blending Japanese and English lyrics, the song combines KLEY’s Western pop sensibilities with bright J-Pop influences, creating a sound that feels both international and emotionally familiar. Centered around the lyric “待ってる” (I’m waiting), the single embraces sweetness and vulnerability without irony.

YDB – “Concierge” | Released June 17, 2026

“Concierge” is the lead single from the first major album release by Young Dirty Bastard (YDB). Carrying the torch of a legendary hip-hop bloodline, YDB delivers a forward-thinking anthem about resilience and making it to the top tier of success. Grimy East Coast energy meets modern trap production — a statement of intent for everything that’s coming next.

Wolph – “Blue Miracle” | Released June 17, 2026

Virginia-based jam band Wolph’s debut single, “Blue Miracle,” is about wanting what you can’t have — and eventually making peace with it. Swirling guitars and a funky groove support the song’s excellent hook, wedding sounds of the Grateful Dead with Funkadelic. “Finding a way to live with the things you can’t change — that’s a Blue Miracle,” the band shared.

Mwenso – “Be Free” | Released June 17, 2026

“Be Free” marks a powerful homecoming for Michael Mwenso, both personally and artistically. Recorded during a return to London — the city where he was raised — the song captures the idea that sometimes you have to go back to move forward. Working with executive producer Reuben James, Mwenso pushed himself into a new vocal territory and a more personal lyrical perspective: where much of his work has centered on collective language, this track is an intimate declaration of “I.” The result is a soulful, uplifting release from an artist arriving at the next stage of his evolution.

Alfie Neale – “Mile High” | Released June 17, 2026

“Mile High” is the first of four upcoming singles from Alfie Neale arriving this summer. The latest tune marks a return to his soul-influenced origins. Self-produced with a prominently featured Rhodes piano, the track draws from Silk Sonic, Remi Wolf, and Still Woozy while paying respect to the artists behind them like George Benson and Prince. Vintage in feel but hi-fi in execution, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a late-night drive or evening on the beach.

CDVRS – “SOUTHBOUND” | Released June 22, 2026

The new EP, SOUTHBOUND, from CDVRS spans genres but has one intention in mind: feel-good music that moves through emotion, environment, and energy. He weaves together three distinct soundscapes – lo-fi hip-hop introspection on “REFLECT,” Miami bass energy on “SOUTHBOUND,” and smooth amapiano warmth on “BAKE” — each representing a different emotional state while staying connected through atmosphere and intention.

The project is inspired by the feeling of leaving the U.K. and heading somewhere warmer and brighter, both physically and mentally. A sense of movement and freedom that sits at the core of everything from nights in the club to reflective moments in the sun.

Girl Named Tom – Dust to Dust (Live Acoustic Versions) | Released June 25, 2026

After the April release of Dust to Dust rose to #1 on the iTunes pop charts, The Voice Season 21 winners are back with what fans consistently dub “GNT at their best,” — stripped-down acoustic arrangements of their songs. On these alternative versions, the trio’s harmonies shine through and more clearly expose the thought-provoking lyrics, warm yet powerful vocals, and exquisite guitar work. If you loved the original album, you might love these versions even more.

Olivia King – “Find a Way” | Released June 26, 2026

Olivia King wrote “Find a Way” after her fifth failed IVF cycle. Rather than letting heartbreak fuel fear, she chose to write a song rooted in faith, joy, and belief that even when the outcome can’t yet be seen, there’s always a way forward. “God will always find a way,” King says.

Her fans, known as the “Kweens,” have been a part of this journey every step of the way. A global online sisterhood centered around faith and hope, they helped shape the release itself: voting on the song title, cover art, outfits, and visuals.

Jaxen James – “Guy For You” | Released June 26, 2026

Jaxen James wrote “Guy For You” at 17 after a relationship ended and the girl he cared about moved on for someone else. Instead of placing blame, the song features James confronting his own mistakes and taking accountability through faith, perseverance, and self-reflection.

Drawing from the confessional songwriting of contemporary country and folk pop, this debut release introduces an artist with a clear identity rooted in melody, vulnerability, and raw emotion.

During the American Association of Independent Music’s (A2IM) Indie Week, our president Molly Neuman sat down with Ari Herstand to discuss how CD Baby continues to evolve as the company approaches three decades in independent music distribution.

Molly and Ari discussed a variety of topics — from what it takes to build a fanbase to new initiatives CD Baby is exploring to better support artists. Here are four key takeaways from the conversation, with additional insights from Molly (edited for brevity).

You can listen to the full podcast at Ari’s Take.

1. Nearly 30 years in, and now a proud part of Virgin Music Group, CD Baby is still independent

The foundational CD Baby policies that millions of artists around the world trust have not changed. If you distribute your music with CD Baby, you retain full ownership of your copyrights and only grant us a license to distribute your music for a one-time fee and a 9% share of royalties — which aligns our success with yours. What artists decide to do with their catalog from there is up to them. That’s the kind of autonomy artists turn to CD Baby for in the first place.

2. CD Baby is focused on helping artists build a stable foundation in a rapidly changing industry

If you’re an independent artist, you want to spend your time writing great music and sharing it with fans — not entering music metadata. But getting it right matters more than you might think.

Clean, accurate metadata helps your music go live on time and ensures you get paid. Mistakes can delay your release or create problems long after it’s out.

That’s why CD Baby is focused on helping artists get the basics right from the start. Beyond a successful release day, we want our artists to be well-positioned for opportunities further down the road — from label conversations to publishing deals.

3. CD Baby is setting artists expectations: earning fans takes hard work

It’s easier than ever to get your music on top platforms — over 100,000 tracks are uploaded to DSPs every day. The hard part is getting heard.

According to data from Luminate, 88 percent of music released in the past year never reached more than 1,000 streams. There are two key takeaways from that number: first, reaching your first 1,000 streams is a genuine feat; second, many artists are releasing music without a plan for promoting it.

Though the industry has changed, the principles of building a fanbase remain the same. Today’s artists are still leaning into the same fan engagement, promotion, and creative world-building that launched careers decades ago — now with better tools.

It doesn’t take hundreds of fans to build momentum. Getting a small, sincere group of friends, family, and fellow people to care about your music can form the critical foundation you need. Artists who focus on getting that kind of earnest and intentional start will find what works and have realistic expectations.

4. CD Baby is investing in the next generation of independent artists

CD Baby has been invested in artist success since the beginning. Our royalty share model means we only earn when artists are earning. Most recently, our pay-per-release model has served as an additional commitment to intentional, quality releases.

This year, we’re going further. We’ve launched a new program called CD Baby Stages Selects which provides dedicated resources and support for a selected group of artists

Launched with Morgan Nagler’s debut album, I’ve Got Nothing to Lose, and I’m Losing It, (recently named to Consequence of Sound’s top albums of 2026), the program will support 10 artists throughout 2026 with packages of marketing and financial support. Through this program, we’re aiming to foster artist diversity and excellence across genre, geography, and generation.

Conclusion

As CD Baby approaches three decades in music distribution, our mission to empower artists to grow on their own terms remains the same. Molly’s conversation with Ari provides some further insight into how CD Baby plans to deliver on its mission in the future.

For artists making their debut in today’s industry, it’s essential to maintain ownership of your music, get your metadata right, and focus on building real connections with fans. CD Baby is here to help you with all of it.

There’s never been a better time to be an independent artist, but how artists can leverage that power — and what “independent” even means today — is more complex than ever.

This month, the CD Baby team attended the American Association of Independent Music’s (A2IM) Indie Week — the world’s largest conference and networking event dedicated to independent music. During the week, our president Molly Neuman joined Jay Gilbert of the Your Morning Coffee podcast to discuss her outlook on artist independence in 2026.

Here’s what Molly had to say.

The transcript below has been edited for brevity and clarity. You can listen to the full podcast at Your Morning Coffee.

Jay: The word independent used to mean something specific — no major label involvement. Today, artists on major distributed deals call themselves indie. Does the word still have a meaning in 2026?

Molly: Absolutely. Independence is still a powerful term. But the nuance of what it means to be an independent artist is complicated, and people twist themselves up trying to treat it like a binary, which I don’t think it is.

Jay: CD Baby has processed billions of dollars in royalties. What does the data tell you about what actually separates artists who build sustainable careers from those who don’t?

Molly: It’s hard to know that there are any specific indicators or characteristics, but there are a lot of people who have not one stream on Spotify — and obviously that is reflective of a lot of dynamics in the industry — there’s a lot of music that nobody is listening to. But that’s why we’re focusing on artists who want to be serious about their career.

Recently, we’ve been advising artists on ways to reach their first 1,000 streams on Spotify. And that entails taking the first steps to activate your community and become eligible for monetizing your music on the platform. We’re focused on helping artists build the core components of a launch pad.

Jay: Where do you think indie artists have the most meaningful leverage?

Molly: For our emerging artists, I think it’s about starting strong. And I don’t think that’s a different outlook from when you and I started our music careers. Artists still need to tap into people that care. And that means A) making music there’s an audience for and B) really trying to connect people to it.

Artists can make that happen in any number of ways — busking on the corner, booking shows, finding other artists you want to play with, or working up to a viral moment. But I don’t think any of that is easy to manufacture and I think that’s maybe where a lot of the wrong energy is focused right now.

Jay: You just touched on the importance of starting with great music that’s authentic. It reminded me of something that Jonathan Daniel once said — “if you give me a great song, my job is easy. If you give me a good song, my job is impossible.” Touch on that a bit more.

Molly: I think most of the businesses in our space, whether it’s distribution platforms, platforms like Bandcamp — even Spotify — we’re all struggling with the fact that there is so much more music than there are fans to listen to it. And now I think we’re complicating that with some of the new issues [like AI slop].

Jay: Not every artist aspires to be a superstar, or even make a living playing music and there’s nothing wrong with that. What about the artists that just want to write, record, and release their art?

Molly: When I started making music, in the earliest days, the commercial prospects were absolutely not there. We had no thought of making money as artists. We wanted to hang out with our friends, play shows with each other, and make up songs, which had an energy to it. At some point, someone was willing to pay $100 or $500 for a show and we started to see some royalties — and that felt surprising, not like the motivation, because we were coming from a specific anti-corporate culture underground.

Now, looking at the industry, we have some really talented kids who might go to music business school or become performers or composers and sometimes they seem to want shortcuts to commercial success. There are no real shortcuts.

Anna-My is a Swedish DJ and producer based in Stockholm, Sweden. Fresh off the breakthrough success of her debut EP last November, Anna-My’s dance music has topped the Shazam charts, received months of rotation on Radio P3, and earned praise from industry tastemakers like Triple J.

This month, we got to talk to the emerging star of the Scandinavian underground music scene about her latest single, “Ready, Kick It.” In our discussion, she shared three key ways she promoted the track.

3 tips from Anna-My on how to promote your next release

Anna-My’s latest single, “Ready, Kick It” is steeped in the late-night house energy she grew up loving. The track pairs a sample of 60’s soul singer Sam Dees’ song, “Lonely For You Baby” with a danceable and hypnotic bass and drum groove. In her own words, it’s a “proper club banger.”

Tip #1: Perform your track before release day — and record it

Ahead of release day, Anna-My performed “Ready, Kick It” in several DJ sets and had her team capture footage of the set. The live content showcased the energy — and fan approval — of the track before it even arrived, building excitement for its release.

Looking for tips on booking gigs? Check out our guide to booking your first shows here.

Tip #2: Pitch your track to press and radio

Anna-My worked with her team to pitch local radio stations and secured a premiere at the Swedish National Radio for her release day. That premiere locked in exposure on release day, which made a real difference.

Looking to lock in a premiere for your next release day? Check out our guides to industry networking, how to write a press release, and how to pitch the press.

Tip #3: Create teaser clips and content

Anna-My worked with her creative director to create teaser clips for the track that showcased the hook and helped establish a visual aesthetic fans could latch onto. Short-form video content that uses your track as the background can help convert likes to listens.

Get 10 ideas on how to promote your upcoming release here.

In conclusion, be proactive

If there’s one takeaway from Anna-My’s single roll-out, it’s to be proactive. Ahead of the release, her team captured live footage for promotion, created teaser content to build hype, and pitched the track to radio and press to line up a premiere on release day.

And once you’re ready, create a free account with CD Baby to distribute your music to over 150 platforms worldwide. Just $9.99 per single or $14.99 per album — no annual fees.

Creating content to promote your music is difficult. You may have posted your cover art, a live performance video, and an announcement on release day — but soon felt your well dry up. You know you need consistent posts on social media to gain traction, but you can’t just post multiple times a week telling your audience to go listen to your track.

Your music is full of context that you can turn into authentic content. Done the right way, that content helps spread your story, engage fans, and drive your streams — in much more artistic ways than generic marketing materials can.

Below, we’ve rounded up 10 organic content concepts you can use to promote your music authentically as an independent artist. Let’s dive in.

Key Takeaways

Independent artists can promote their music on social media without repeatedly asking followers to stream their songs.

Effective organic content tactics include lyric videos, live performance clips, behind-the-scenes footage, engagement prompts, and more.

A single song release can fuel weeks of posts across multiple formats, without numbingly repeating concepts.

Setting a track as background audio on carousel posts and moodboards is a simple way to increase music exposure within organic content

1. Showcase your live performance

Whether it’s footage from a real show or a recording of you performing in your bedroom, live performance content gives new listeners a chance to see the creator behind the music. It’s also engaging content that can drive buzz around your shows.

2. Peel back the curtain with behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage

Give your fans a look at the creative processes, experiences, and moments that led to your latest release. This is a super engaging and authentic way to bring fans deeper into your world. You can showcase footage from the studio, back stage, demo outtakes, and more.

3. Give fans a new reason to listen with alternative versions

This idea is certainly the heaviest lift on the list, requiring you to record and release a new version of the song — unless you’re sitting on a viable demo. But alternative versions can serve as creative re-imaginings of songs, adding more depth and dimension to your release.

4. Deepen fan connection with a lyric breakdown

Ever watch those lyric breakdowns from Genius? You can create your own version for fans. Explain the meanings of and stories behind your lyrics. Share what you were going through when you wrote them, how lyrics came together, and what they mean to you now. Your fans will love being let into your creative mind — and this type of content invites them to interpret your work alongside you.

5. Stir up some lore — tell the story behind your music

This is similar to the lyric breakdown, but a great alternative if the most interesting story isn’t actually in the lyrics — or if your music is instrumental. Think of it as a way of giving your music more context that fans can latch onto. This deepens their understanding of your art and makes your music more interesting.

6. Show off your skills with a tutorial

Give a tutorial on an aspect of your song that you’re proud of. Your fans will love the chance to see you in your element and if they’re musicians themselves, they might take inspiration from you. You can run down the gear you used, how the song came together, and a step-by-step demonstration of the key parts.

7. Turn your best lyrics into scroll-stopping videos

Showcase the hook, chorus, or your favorite section of a new track over engaging b-roll (background footage used to support the focus of your video), and animate your lyrics over the screen. This type of content is easily repeatable — use different footage each time to reach new audiences and keep your feed fresh.

8. Drive engagement by asking fans what or who your song reminds them of

Share your song and invite fans to comment, reply, or engage with the post and leave their thoughts on what songs, moments, or memories a song reminds them of.

9. Build your visual identity around your music with a moodboard

If you’re not sitting on b-roll photos or footage, you can still craft an aesthetic around your music posting moodboards with your track as the background. What’s been grabbing your attention lately? Whether it’s books, travels, vinyl, or clothes — assemble a collage of the things that represent you and align with your music — then set your music as the backing track.

10. Post cutdowns of your music video

Did you create a music video for your recent release? Cut out your favorite moments and repost them over social media. Artful music video clips can be repurposed to promote upcoming shows, merch drops, and more with some text on the screen. You can also use these posts to drive traffic to your full-length video.

Conclusion

Social media promotion doesn’t need to be a draining experience. This list is a starting point to get you thinking about ways you can tap into the context of your music to start building an exciting world around your art.

The best content shouldn’t feel like a promotion. It should feel like an invitation to join your community. When fans feel like they’re part of that world — instead of being marketed to — they show up for you. They share your music, engage with your posts, and come back for more.

Did you just release new music? If you’re like many artists, you probably went all-in on the release rollout, promoting your music for weeks and spending release day hitting refresh on all your social feeds. Now, you might be quietly stepping back, hoping the song will find its audience.

That instinct is understandable — music marketing campaigns are exhausting and many release strategies treat release day as the finish line. But stepping back too soon is one of the most common ways artists lose momentum. Now that your release is live, the real work (and payoff) begins.

Here are five proven ways you can maintain momentum after release day as an independent artist.

1. Play shows

One of the best ways to grow an audience for your music is performing live. The reason it works is because live shows both deepen the connection with fans who already know your music and provide critical exposure to new listeners. It’s an added benefit if shows feel less like promo and more a natural part of your creative process.

If you didn’t organize an official release show, plan that first. As you begin gaining traction and connections in your hometown, branch out to adjacent cities to reach new audiences. Organize shows every four weeks to maintain momentum.

Every live show is an opportunity to build your email list, stock your social media content calendar, and sell merch. Line up a photographer or videographer for every show to capture engaging content. Offer an email signup at your merch table — you can drive signups by offering free perks or running a giveaway — and always have a few merch items to sell.

2. Develop your brand on social media

If you’re just getting your start as an artist, your pre-release campaign was probably a lot of introductory content — putting your music in front of new listeners, experimenting to find what resonated, and building anticipation for the drop. Now that your release is live, it’s time to solidify your artist brand.

That means shifting out of promo mode and thinking about world-building. Every piece of content is a decision about your aesthetic, tone of voice, and values. If you build a world around your music, fans won’t just keep listening — they’ll share your music with friends.

A few practical guidelines to make that possible:

Find a posting cadence you can sustain — for most artists, three to four times per week is the target. It’s not just about playing to the algorithm, it’s about demonstrating commitment to your fanbase.

Increase your content output by planning content in advance and creating it in batches. Filming a music video? Capture behind-the-scenes footage, do a quick self-recorded interview about the process, and generate spin-off art from the visuals and themes for use across your channels.

The most effective post-release content goes deeper, not broader. Instead of continuing to push the release link, share the story behind the song, the influences that shaped it, the moment you knew it was finished. Think more narratively instead of promotionally.

3. Release related tracks

If a new track is gaining traction, capitalize on it by releasing the demo, an alternative version, or a similar track, and if applicable, package it as an EP. That gives current fans a reason to re-engage and gives you a new material to work with.

Each format serves a different purpose.

A remix can help you reach an entirely new audience of the artist that creatively reimagines your track.

A demo — the raw early recording of a song before it’s fully produced — gives your most dedicated fans the chance to see behind-the-scenes.

An alternative version — acoustic, orchestral, lo-fi, or live — reaches listeners who connect with a different energy than the original. It also gives playlist editors and DSPs fresh material to work with.

When deciding where to start, follow what’s already pulling at you. If there’s a demo recording you can’t stop coming back to, that’s a sign it’s worth releasing. If the song took on a new life through playing it live, record that version. If a remix with another artist has been in the back of your mind, make the call. Release the version that feels most alive to you right now.

4. Build your email list

Of all the tools available to an independent artist, an email list is the one audience channel you actually own. While reaching your social media following depends on the algorithm, your email list provides a direct line to all your fans.

The key is giving fans a reason to sign up. Offer something worth exchanging an email address for — a cheap merch item like a sticker, pin, or magnet — and promote your list at shows, over social media, and on your website.

Once fans are on your list, create a cadence for a newsletter and some routine topic pillars: upcoming live shows, life updates, stories from the road, goals of the month, and more.

5. Celebrate milestones with fans

Your wins can be just as exciting for fans. Whether it’s your first 1,000 streams or an editorial playlist placement, these milestones aren’t just personal achievements. They’re opportunities to make fans feel included in your story and deepen the sense of community around your music.

When you hit a milestone, acknowledge the metric then tell a story about how you got there. Shout out specific fans, mentors, collaborators — anyone who helped along the way. Making your celebratory post personal and community-driven will give greater meaning to the numbers and signal to fans that there’s real momentum behind the music.

In conclusion

Maintaining momentum after release day comes down to one thing: giving fans a reason to keep caring. That means staying visible with a consistent marketing strategy, but it also means something bigger — building an artist brand that fans want to be part of. The artists who turn their releases into momentum are the ones who show up consistently, own their identity, and give their audience a world to belong to.

Ready to put these strategies into action? Sign up for a free CD Baby account today and distribute your music to over 150 platforms. Only $9.99 per single or $14.99 per album — no annual fees.

“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture” – Unknown

Writing about yourself is hard. Writing about your music is even harder. But that doesn’t make your artist bio any less important. It’s often the first thing an interested journalist, fan, booking agent, or industry pro will look at to get to know you beyond the music.

This guide walks you through a clear process to help you pull together a professional bio. That includes what to prepare before you write, how to structure your bio for different uses, and what to include.

Why a strong bio matters

Your artist bio is important for three main reasons. First, it’s the main source of truth for the industry to get to know you and your music directly from the source. Second, every update to your bio is an opportunity for you to set the scene behind a release – sharing the story, people, ideas, and inspirations that fueled your project. And third, it’s a place where you can build credibility – in a few hundred words you can demonstrate that you take your music seriously and prove your success.

5 things to prepare before you write

Don’t start writing your bio from scratch. You can speed up the drafting process and ensure your bio hits all the right points by preparing some materials ahead of time:

All your catalog metadata: From lyrics and genre to track titles and release dates, have this information handy to cite in your bio – at least for your most recent or upcoming release.

Resume: This doesn’t have to be a formal document, but prepare a list of your recent accomplishments and major projects.

A narrative: Trying to cram your life story and your creative life philosophy into a couple hundred words will not work. Instead, settle on a story that’s rooted in an upcoming release, recent goals, an idea you’ve been obsessing over, or your overall artist brand. Find a core narrative element to build your bio around.

A few readers: When in doubt, lean on friends! Find a few friends or mentors in the music scene to help you plan your bio and/or review it once it’s drafted. They can provide valuable feedback on whether you’re effectively describing your music, hooking the reader, making accurate comparisons, and more.

Press quotes: Including strong press quotes can build credibility within your bio.

How to write your artist bio in 5 steps

Now you’re ready to start writing your bio. Follow these steps to get your draft together.

Step 1: Lead with who you are and what you sound like

Hook the reader fast. Lead with your genre, mood, and a sonic reference point, but don’t feel boxed in by convention, either. You can open with a quote, a metaphor, or a quick story. The goal is to grab a reader’s attention and quickly establish who you are and what kind of music you make.

Step 2: Tell your story

You won’t have space in your bio to tell your life story, so focus on that narrative angle you prepared. Anchoring your bio in that story should allow you to seamlessly pivot out to discuss accomplishments and how this story frames your most recent or upcoming release.

Step 3: Name your influences

Reference two to four well-known artist names to help people orient to your sound. The goal is to give the reader context around your music by connecting it with music they know. Be intentional about the artists you choose – for press purposes, include at least one or two contemporary artists. Then, if you make a playlist around your release, ensure those artists are on it, too.

Step 4: Highlight your achievements

Drawing from the list you prepared, include a few noteworthy accomplishments, releases, events, and more to demonstrate momentum. Here, you’re aiming to show, not tell. Instead of saying “a growing fanbase” or “excellent live shows” provide some key streaming or social media metrics, the number of shows you’ve recently played (and perhaps sold out), and so on. If you’re very early in your music journey, you can share your goals and the work you’ve put into achieving them.

Step 5: Share your best press quotes

You can build credibility into your bio by including a series of press quotes. You can either cleverly weave them into the bio itself or list them below. If you’re still working up to press coverage, ask for quotes from collaborators, friends, and others. The goal is to gain credibility by demonstrating people care about your work.

Step 6: Close with what’s next

Don’t let your bio end looking backward. Close with something your reader can look forward to — an upcoming release, a tour, a collaboration, whatever’s on the horizon. It signals that you’re still growing and makes it clear the bio is current. That’s especially useful when you’re pitching to journalists: give them something their audience can anticipate, and you’ve just made their job easier and your story more timely.

Short, medium, or long? A quick-reference guide

Not all bios serve the same purpose. If you followed the steps above, your bio is probably sitting somewhere between 250-500 words. Edit it down if necessary, then work on reducing it to medium and short lengths for additional purposes. Having multiple versions of your bio will ensure you’re ready for every industry opportunity that comes your way.

Start with a draft and refine

Your bio won’t be perfect on the first pass and that’s fine. As we noted in the preparation section, grab a few friends to review it for clarity and accuracy – continue to workshop it according to their feedback.

The CD Baby team recently attended The Great Escape, a music festival and conference in Brighton, England. Alongside CD Baby artists taking the stage, our president Molly Neuman joined journalist Mark Sutherland for a keynote discussion on what it actually takes for indie artists to thrive in today’s landscape.

Here are three things every independent artist should take away from that conversation.

1. Independence means owning your rights

One of the first things Molly addressed was what “independence” really means for artists today. The term is constantly evolving to fit new contexts, but at CD Baby, independence truly comes down to one thing.

“Independence is about owning your rights,” Molly said. “If you ever want to make a change, if you ever want to do something different — it comes down to owning your rights.”

It’s why when you distribute your music with CD Baby, you retain complete ownership of your rights. Since pioneering digital distribution for independent artists nearly three decades ago, we’ve focused on providing independent artists with the same professional grade tools the industry depends on, without the contractual limitations of a major label — so you can grow a career on your own terms.

2. There’s no shortcut to a sustainable career

Asked what it takes to grow as an independent artist, Molly was direct: ambition alone isn’t enough.

“You have to work really hard,” she said. “We’ve realized you can’t sugarcoat — you have to be real and tell artists what works and what doesn’t — in a kind way.”

That means steering artists away from the predatory services promising quick hacks for streams or revenue. Sustainable growth comes from building incrementally: supporting your local music community, developing an authentic social presence, and following best practices from streaming platforms.

“It’s good old, traditional marketing,” Molly said. “It’s also about getting out there and finding spaces where an audience is sincerely there for discovery – and then building in modern tools and methods, like playlists and other services.”

Overall, the key is being intentional across channels and understanding there’s no single path to an audience. At CD Baby, our job is to make that education digestible and actionable — so you can spend less time reading about how to promote your music and more time actually making it.

3. In a saturated market, quality beats quantity

Over 100,000 tracks are uploaded to streaming platforms every day, and statistics suggest a significant portion of that volume is low-effort content driven by algorithm-manipulation rather than genuine artistry. The numbers reflect it: just 13% of uploaded tracks ever reach 1,000 streams.

That’s why CD Baby is focused on the other side of that equation — the artists who are invested in their work and intentional about their growth.

“Distribution volume is not the priority for the future of CD Baby,” Molly said. “We’re focused on being a destination for artists who are serious about their careers and really want to grow their audience.”

That stance shapes everything from our pay-per-release model — which encourages intentionality over mass uploads — to our ongoing work with DSP partners to address platform abuse.

On AI specifically, Molly was direct. “The mindset of creators is shifting. Credible producers and very credible songwriters are talking about the AI tools they’re using — 100% AI or just partial — and how they can’t work without them.”

CD Baby does not accept AI-generated music for distribution. But artist workflows are more complex than a single policy can capture. As these tools continue to evolve, we’re helping shape new metadata requirements, policies, and features — on our own platform and our partners’ — to protect independent artists and enable better transparency.

Conclusion

Building an independent music career has never been more accessible — or more complex. But the fundamentals haven’t changed: own what you create, put in the work, and focus on building something real.

Ready to take the next step? Distribute your music with CD Baby. You’ll retain complete ownership of your rights, pay once per release with no annual fees, and get access to the professional-grade tools you need to grow your audience.

The Recording Academy just dropped the key dates for the 2027 GRAMMY Awards. And if you’re an independent artist reading this — thinking the GRAMMYs are reserved for chart-toppers with major label budgets — it’s time to rethink that.

Over 100 CD Baby artists have earned GRAMMY nominations in recent years, with 36 of them taking home the award in their category. The playing field is more open than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get nominated.

What are the Grammys?

The GRAMMY Awards recognize outstanding achievements in music. Put on by the Recording Academy of the United States, the GRAMMYs are the only major music awards that are peer-voted. That means winners are selected by the Recording Academy’s voting members, a community made up of singers, songwriters, producers, engineers, and other music professionals.

Crucially, the Academy selects nominees and winners based on holistic excellence and artistic merit — not just chart positions or streaming numbers.

How did the Grammys start?

Despite the popular perception of the Grammys as a night for music’s biggest stars, the awards actually emerged from inclusive, DIY intentions.

During the planning for the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s, music industry nominees were required to have sold either one million records or 250,000 albums. The music executives on the planning committee realized those sales thresholds would shut out many deserving artists. So they created their own organization — the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences — and their own award, the GRAMMY. The first ceremony was held on May 4, 1959.

What are the eligibility requirements for Grammy submissions?

The Grammys are completely open to all artists, but releases need to meet the following requirements:

Release date: Music must have been distributed between August 31, 2025 and August 28, 2026.

Length: For album submissions, a recording must contain at least five different tracks with a total playing time of 15 minutes, or a total playing time of 30 minutes regardless of track count. Singles have no length requirements.

Format: A submitted recording must be available for sale in physical stores, via digital download, or on a recognized streaming platform. It must also meet the industry minimum technical standard of 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Each submitted song must have proper metadata (descriptive data about your music, including the artist name, track title, album, genre, and cover art), as well as International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs) for each track.

Original Material: An album must be more than 75 percent unreleased material recorded within five years of the release date.

Are collaborators and crew eligible too?

Yes. All credited artists including featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers are eligible to be nominated and win, at least in the Album of the Year category. As long as they’re credited on the release, they’re eligible. No minimum percentage of playing time required.

Before you submit anything, review your metadata, songwriter credits, ISRCs, and other release details.

What’s the difference between a Grammy entry and a nomination?

This distinction trips a lot of artists up, so let’s be clear.

An entry is a recording that has been formally submitted to the Recording Academy for GRAMMY consideration. If it meets the eligibility requirements, it’s placed on the ballot that goes to the Recording Academy’s voting members. Those voters then cast votes for the submissions they believe deserve a nomination. The entries that earn the most votes become nominees and are placed into their respective categories.

The Recording Academy receives more than 20,000 eligible entries during a single GRAMMY season. The Academy’s Awards staff review each submission manually to confirm eligibility. Being nominated — earning one of just five spots per category after that vetting process — is itself a significant achievement.

How are entries submitted for the Grammys?

Entries for GRAMMY consideration must be submitted by members of the Recording Academy — either Professional or Voting members — or by registered Media Companies (like record labels and music distributors). Each member or registered company has an account on the GRAMMY website where they can log in and submit entries during the Online Entry Period (OEP).

There is only one round to submit entries. If a recording isn’t formally entered before the OEP closes, it cannot be considered for a GRAMMY Award or nomination, and it won’t appear on any voting ballot. Submit early — the Recording Academy’s Awards team can help with questions, but only if there’s time left to act.

As a CD Baby artist, your music distributed through CD Baby is eligible for submission. If you want to submit your own work as an Academy member, make sure your release is distributed and live well before the entry window opens.

For the 2027 GRAMMYs, the Online Entry Period runs from July 7 through August 21, 2026.

Next steps

The GRAMMYs celebrate excellence in music. If you’ve made something you’re proud of and are working hard to promote, the process is built to recognize it. But none of that matters if the technical foundation isn’t solid.

Complete metadata and valid ISRCs aren’t just administrative details — they’re what make your music eligible in the first place. Every credited artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer needs to be on the record. When you distribute with CD Baby, we make sure that foundation is in place from day one: accurate metadata, ISRCs assigned to every track, and your music live across 150+ platforms — including all the streaming services the Recording Academy recognizes for eligibility.

Whether the GRAMMYs are a goal or just something you’re curious about, releasing your music the right way means you’re never leaving opportunity on the table. Distribute your next release with CD Baby and make sure your music is built to go the distance.

The CD Baby team recently attended the annual Music Biz Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. One of the industry’s largest gatherings of the year, the event brings together thousands of professionals from labels, distributors, tech companies, and more around the world. And while the conference was largely business-facing, conversations in every room centered around issues impacting independent artists every day. So here’s what you need to know.

Meetings with platform partners

We met with our partners at Spotify, Amazon, Meta, YouTube and more to discuss challenges our artists are facing — AI slop, fraudulent uploads, market saturation — demonstrating how CD Baby’s infrastructure and pay-per-release model helps protect them by design, while continuing conversations for additional policies, tools, and education around platform best practices. These conversations were an opportunity to advocate directly for independent artists to the platforms shaping their paths to success.

Sponsoring the Music Biz Roadshow

We were also proud to sponsor the Music Biz Roadshow, a day-long educational panel series open to independent artists and students, covering a range of topics — including emerging AI policies on streaming platforms, the importance of artist branding, and new ways to monetize music. Attendees also had the opportunity to network with the industry’s foremost experts and get direct answers to their questions. From the knowledge sharing to the networking, the Roadshow aligned well with CD Baby’s mission to break down barriers for independent artists.

Fireside chat with Y.D.B.

The highlight of the week was a fireside chat between our president, Molly Neuman, and CD Baby artist Young Dirty Bastard (YDB) — the son of Wu-Tang Clan founding member Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The conversation explored a story that felt close to home: how to honor a legacy while forging a unique path forward.

For YDB, that entailed leading his own independent career while keeping his father’s story and music alive. While releasing original music of his own — and managing a staggering list of collaborations from SEGA to the NFL Network — he tours regularly with Wu-Tang Clan and represents his father at commemorative events. This year, he’ll attend the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to accept Wu-Tang Clan’s induction on his father’s behalf. In everything he does, YDB finds new ways to carry his father’s creativity forward — using legacy as an inspiration, not a limitation.

The CD Baby story follows a similar arc. Still bearing the name from our early days in physical distribution, we’ve gone on to pioneer digital distribution for independent artists — and today we’re working at the forefront of the streaming ecosystem to protect and promote their work. The industry keeps changing, but our mission doesn’t: to empower artists with the tools and support they need to grow careers on their own terms.

That’s a snapshot of our time at the Music Biz Conference. We’re proud to represent independent artists in the conversations shaping the future of the industry — from streaming platform features and policies to emerging technologies and strategies. In a rapidly changing landscape, our goal is to not only keep you informed on what’s coming, but help you put new knowledge into action.

Stay in the loop by creating a free CD Baby account today. You’ll get a monthly roundup of resources and industry news, broken down into actionable insights you can use to grow your career.
