Sebastian Copeland - The return from the ice

After his two months long polar expedition Sebastian Copeland presents a limited amount of his favourite large fine art images from both the Arctic and Antarctica at the Bernheimer gallery in Munich. He was reaching the North Pole by covering over 700 kilometers on foot.

At the exhibition "Landscapes - Photographs by Sebastian Copeland, Mat Hennek, Andréas Lang und Martin Pudenz" he is one of four contemporary artists who present a classic theme of photography: that of landscape.

Sebastian Copeland's Fine Art Prints are represented in international galleries and museums as well as in well-known collections. The seemingly timeless works, taken during an expedition to the Antarctic in 2007, illustrate the breathtaking beauty of this extreme landscape, which is dismissive and fragile, untouched and endangered at the same time. The images are recorded in high-contrast black and white prints as well as in the richly saturated blue hues of colour photographs. Due to the climate conditions, Sebastian Copeland - who prefers using filming material - primarily employed a 35-millimeter digital camera without a colour screen. Some of the motifs, however, were produced with analogue panoramic and medium format cameras.

Apart from all their diversity, the works of these four artists share a common theme: They depict a seemingly uninhabited nature without human beings. "The expedition was intense and epic. Transformative is a word that comes to mind. I would love to share some of those experiences with you," says Sebastian, who will be present for the opening of the exhibition.

Exhibition dates:
Friday 19 June 2009 - Friday 31 July 2009

From Bangalore to Bonn

Suhas Gopinath, founder of the IT-enterprise Globals Inc., is famous in India as Shootingstar of the Hightech industry. German Newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) recently wrote an interesting article about Suhas Gopinath and his plans to capture the European market, particularly the German one.

With fourteen Gopinath founded the enterprise, at the age of 23 years he is chef of 400 employees world-wide. Recently he completed a managemet crash course in Harvard. The German office of the company will move from the current address in Brühl to Bonn. From there he wants to supply the German medium-sized businesses with services around the internet. In addition Gopinath wants to create together with investors a further internet company, a virtual event platform particularly for German enterprises. Despite the economic crisis Gopinath is confident: „If not now, when then?", he asks. The World Economic Forum look upon the young Gopinath as an important manager of tomorrow.

In 2009, Suhas Gopinath spoke on the panel "Software" at DLD09. Please see the video below:

Huffington Post to back Investigative Journalism Team

Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, wants to support the ailing investigative journalism in the USA. Huffington is collaborating with the foundation "The Atlantic Philanthropies" to launch the Huffington Post Investigative Fund with an initial budget of $1.75 million. Ten employees and further free-lance journalists uncover mainly stories from the American economy. The results of their work will be available for any publication or Web site to use for free but just after HuffPost have posted the news.
Huffington said she hopes to encourage others to fund similar ventures. Foundation spending to support journalists is a promising trend, like the New Yorker journalist office which started with ten million dollar and 24 employees the "Pro Publica".

In a recent Interview with Leif Kramp and Stephan Weichert pubished in Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Arianna Huffington spoke about the journalistic form of the blog. "As one of the most exciting developments I still regard the so-called "citizen journalism", says Huffington. Her opinion is that Bloggers love to analyze a history, instead of traditional media which dedicate fast to the next subject.

'Junge Wilde' of the financial community

Today, one of the leading German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) published an article about the track record of the independent financial services group Angermayer, Brumm & Lange Gruppe (ABL). The company was founded by Christian Angermayer.

Via several subsidiaries, ABL is active in the fields of asset management, product distribution and investment banking. The beginning of ABL goes back to the year 1999. The students Christian Angermayer and Peter Brumm made their dream come true: to found an investment bank. Despite initial difficulties-like the crash of the stock exchange in 2000- the young men bled though. Today ABL maintains as strengthened financial house which still growth. „Junge Wilde", that's how the five co-partner are called at the financial community, owe this privilege to an extremely conservative decision long time ago. They did not jump up on the wave of the new economy and financed their growth target with credits.
"Right now, I am completely happy", says 30-year-old Angermayer.

In 2008, Angermayer spoke on the panel "Africa Revisited" at DLD08. See the video above.

Hubert Burda Media increases Share in Glam

Following the successful launch of Glam Deutschland in summer 2008, Hubert Burda Media is extending its partnership with the leading Internet network for women. Glam Deutschland works together with more than eighty agencies and clients.

Glam Deutschland will be expanding its range of services in the next few months, says Dr. Marcel Reichart: "Innovations like Glam TV, the 'Eco' channel for the 'Lohas' target group, and Brash, the online network aimed at men, make the platform even more attractive to publishers and brand clients."

Ralf Hirt, Vice-President of Glam Media International and Director of Glam Media, adds: "Following the successful start we're now looking forward to the next phase: to be able to offer our advertising and agency clients increasingly holistic and cutting-edge advertising programmes."
Sebastian Copeland is setting sail

Two years after his expedition to Antartica, Sebastian Copeland is embarking on his new Peary Centennial expedition to the North Pole. The photographer and environmental activist has just left for Canada for what is considered by all to be the Everest of Polar expeditions.

"After six months of intense training culminating in a five hour a day regiment, he is in the best shape of his life and a net gain of almost twenty pounds! He is expected to lose at least that during his 40-50 days mission on skis to reach the Pole in spite of a 7000 calories/day diet," says Mikhail Lapushner who is coordinating communications efforts during the expedition.

Sebastian (photo taken at DLD09) and Mikhail created a shared experience for all from the ice on MySpace. In a couple of days, Sebastian will be entering daily blogs, photographs, as well as posting a 3D Google map tracking his progress, and occasional voice recordings of his daily calls to the logistics team. You can follow all of this here.

As an international speaker on climate crisis for over a decade, Sebastian has been featured on television and radio (Larry King Live, NPR, Air America) and has addressed audiences at the United Nations, the World Affairs Council, the General Assembly on Climate in New Orleans, the George Eastman House, Google Headquarters and to Apple's Senior Design Team.

The next step: The 23andMe Parkinson's Disease Initiative

The Personal Genome Service company and Time Magazine's "2008 Invention of the Year" 23andMe launched a new community. In conjunction with the Parkinson's Institute and Clinical Center and the Michael J. Fox Foundation, 23andMe starts a research program for Parkinson's disease patients.

Those organizations are inviting 10,000 Parkinson's patients to enroll in 23andMe's service, get genotyped, and join the company's Parkinson's community. The genome wide association studies from this pool of 10,000 will provide a huge step towards finding genetic and environmental modifiers to PD, its symptoms and progression, as well as the effectiveness of different treatments. The program has been made possible through a contribution from Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.

Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki founded their web-based DNA analysis technologies in early 2008 and presented 23andMe at DLD08.

They plan to announce similar initiatives around other diseases. "Our approch of combining genetic data with the web-based collection of condition-specific information has the potential to drive the study of many disorders," said co-founder Linda Avey.

The Key to Risk

Forbes.com recently published an interesting article -- The Key To Risk: It's All About Emotion -- about the economic crisis and how to handle risk in an unpredictable business environment. According to author Kevin Kelly, the crisis was brought on partly by enormous miscalculations of risk. He points out how vital it is to appreciate how much our perceptions of risk are being framed emotionally and culturally. "Now, fear -- fear of loss -- dominates the landscape, despite the frantic efforts of governments and firms to restore confidence. Everyone is taking, if anything, too little risk", says Kelly and argues that fear can lead to unreasonably high levels of risk aversion.

In this context, he refers to the Asian disease problem. In 1981, Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman (picture) showed that the way a risk is described strongly influences how people see it - the 'framing' makes all the difference (this work later earned Kahneman the Nobel Prize for economics). Says Kelly: "The Asian disease problem holds two big implications for anyone leading an organization today. One is the reminder that emotions drive our decisions, perhaps especially when times are hard. The second is that we need to be very aware of how our organizational culture affects those emotions. The way we each deal with uncertainty is strongly influenced by the people around us."
