Some say death is more unbearable, but sometimes I can't help but think it's the living who can no longer make time for you because they've got so wrapped up in the busyness of life that hurts more.

With those that passed, you grieve and mourn. At first, it's so painful you can barely breathe and you wonder if you'll be able to make it through another day. Then years pass and the pain becomes less, the memories more precious, and the longing is still there, but it becomes a different kind of longing. Perhaps it's because you know that person is living the good life in heaven, or perhaps it's just the mind's way of dealing. Whatever it is, you begin to heal.

But with the living, the hurt never has a chance to heal. You see them on the street corner, or you hear from them every few months, and you wonder, "What happened? Why aren't...." And most often, the disappearance in your life has absolutely nothing to do with a disagreement, a quarrel, or the inability to get along and everything to do with a recent move out of the area or simply, the busyness of life.

With that said, I'd like to encourage you to not disappear from the lives of those you treasure--whether they live two doors down, or two states. Make time for them. You truly never know what tomorow brings...

Embrace life. Embrace relationships. Don't put so much stock in the busyness of life that you forget to treasure the people in your life. Trust me, you never want to live with the regret of "I should have, we could have..." after someone has died and you've run out of chances...

More videos with this song

Ronan Keating

Garth Brooks

Scott, is at it again! She's just reviewed a bunch of fabulous Christian non-fiction books you won't want to miss!

Squiggle
Squiggle is the story of a nine-year-old girl who finds herself inhabiting the body of a stuffed monkey after getting her wish for magic. Of course, she soon finds she would much rather be a little girl, but on her quest to return to her former self, she has all kinds of hillarious adventures!

Surrender The Wind
Seth Braxton is a patriot who fought in the Revolutionary War in America. His grandfather is a loyalist in England, caring for Seth's sister, Caroline. But now the war is over and his grandfather dies, leaving him Ten Width, the family's estate and he must return to see his sister and settle affairs there. But when he arrives in England, Seth also discovers Juleah--the woman he is destined to love--and an evil plot that threatens to destroy what is left of his family.

The Great Christmas Bowl
Ever met a walking, talking trout before? Meet Marianne Wallace, football fanatic, proud mother, and soon-to-become team trout—err, mascot—for the Big Lake Trouts high school football team! If you could use a little comedic stress relief yourself, carve out a short time to read The Great Christmas Bowl and have a few heartfelt laughs. You'll be glad you did!

The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow
Agnes and Griselda Sparrow, two sisters who still live at home in the family's old funeral home—are what you would call "characters" in a word. Famous for being both fat and a near miracle-worker with her prayers, Agnes is about to get a lot more attention than she ever wanted in her life—and things are about to get very complicated in Bright's Pond.

One Imperfect Christmas
When Natalie Pearce’s mother has a massive stroke, her world is torn apart. Will she ever find a way to put all the pieces back together?

June Bug
What do you get when you combine a man running from his past, the nine-year-old daughter he loves, and an old run-down RV traveling all over America? And what happens when the RV breaks down in the Wal Mart parking lot, the little girl sees a missing person's poster with a face on it that looks just like her, and a well-meaning Wal Mart employee who wants to help the attractive man and his daughter? Read June Bug and find out!

I am so honored that she wants the columns to get more footage.

Enjoy!

Is Tithing A Necessity?
In Mark 12: 41- 44 we learn about a widow who gave all because of her faith. When I look at the widow who dropped two coins into the temple offering, I see a woman who was devoted in trusting her Lord. Jesus was at the temple that day, and he saw her willingness to give all the money she had to his kingdom. Her devotion was a sign of worship in her Savior.

Whom Can I Tithe To If I Have No Church Home?
We have many options available. We can support a local ministry or begin a new outreach. Or send money or give of our time. The key is to show our faithfulness to the Lord; it’s not with whom or where we tithe. When we tithe—be it in money, time or talent—it’s like we are standing in an offering plate for Christ and saying, “I give you me, Lord. I give you me.”

Why Can't Different Faiths Unite In Marriage?
As for your relationship with your girlfriend, all relationships are difficult; even in the best of situations. In Psalm 127:1, the Bible says, "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it." With that said, I believe your religious differences—your Muslim faith and her Christian faith—will be hard to avoid and can cause conflict and strife.

A round-up gives various answers to one particular question. Sometimes the answers come from an actual survey held in the publication, but most of the time a freelance or staff writer contacts various sources, asks the sources to answer one question, and then uses those answers to put together a round-up.

You see rounds-ups in celebrity magazines all the time, but you can also see them in newspapers, trade publications, and consumer magazines.

They need "more" from those who aren't dealing with depression then ever before. They need that extra hug, that extra praise, that extra five minutes of your time. They need that ear that's tired of hearing the same sob story to hear it just one more time. And most of all they need your compassion and unwavering love. They need to know that someone is there to lift them up when they cannot lift themselves up.

Depression is NOT a choice. It's not something you wake up one day thinking you'd like to have. It's not a personality choice. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain.

If you asked a depressed person, on one of their good days, if they'd ever like to go back to depression, the answer would be a resounding, "No". It's true that there is some comfort in the familiarity of depression, but it's no way to live one's life. It takes more than it gives.

So the next time you encounter a person suffering from depression, don't turn your back. No matter how tired you are of the same old "sob story", don't leave them alone. You don't have to be there 24/7, but be there.

You pretty much know what is going to happen before it happens. And Jane Lynch’s character as the head mistress of the camp gets old really fast—probably because she plays the same character—only with a different job title—in all her films.

George plays, Eddie Serrano, a widowed father, trying to raise is tween daughter alone. During the day, he’s a fast-talking, successful attorney. At night, he plays catch up by trying to become an involved parent. The problem is that his refusal to talk about his deceased wife has put a wedge between Eddie and his daughter.

Then the unthinkable happens, a troop mom has to back down from her duties and Eddie must take her place as leader. At first, Eddie is reluctant to go along with the camp’s rules as he’s not accustomed to living in the woods or working as a team. But as the film progresses, he begins to understand the importance of adapting to his circumstances and in the end, bonds with his daughter.

If you have children under the age of twelve, they’ll find this film innocently entertaining—which is quite refreshing considering many of the films being produced these days try to balance the delicate line between child and adult and often miss the mark when it comes to films for the tween sector.

The DVD comes with special features like: additional scenes, Daniela Bobadilla’s views on playing George’s daughter, music by the Naked Brother’s Band, and a gag reel.

At first, I couldn’t bring myself to watch it—mostly because I was burnt out with writing and reviewing and just needed a break and I knew once I watched it, I’d have to review it. Then my daughter saw the cover and said, “Hey, isn’t that the guy from that old show you had me watch a while back? What’s it called, ‘Happy Days’? Let’s watch it!” So in went the DVD.

I Recommend

Your purchase
supports this site.

Before the film even began I thought to myself, “This is going to be another one of those films where I say good-bye to my brain cells but I’ll try to keep an open-mind.” Perhaps it was because the lack of publicity, or perhaps it was because I didn’t want to see Henry Winkler playing another dumbed down character—as seems to be his motto in his older years, but I stereo-typed the film without really knowing anything about it.

Boy was I embarrassed and surprised when the film was over and I found myself saying, “That wasn’t half bad! It kept me entertained. I laughed. And it had a good, strong storyline.”

The film is about two boys named Elliott and Rocky Plumm who, during the summer of 68, help the FBI solve the case of the missing frog, Froggy Doo. The boys live with an alcoholic father who resents having to give up his life as a fighter to care for a family and a mother who is at her wits-end and ready to move on with her life. Tired of dealing with the family drama, the eldest boy decides to make his little brother feel better by finding his favorite television character, Froggy Doo—who just happened to go missing in their hometown!

Some critics argue that the side-story dealing with the boys’ family life has no place in the film and that might be so, but it in no way distracts from the overall plot of the boys playing private detectives (or sleuths). Since it is, after all, the key ingredient in waking up the father who decides his kids are more important that a bottle of booze and lost dreams.

The film is based on a true story and the DVD comes with special features like, an audio commentary, a gag real, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage.

And if so, what purpose would it serve and what steps must I take?
-- Ready To Look Professional

Dear Ready To Look Professional,
Anyone looking to have a more professional appearance would benefit from a web site, especially writers. It’s often a dog eat dog world when it comes to locating paying assignments. Having a well-done web site will definitely help you look more “experienced” and might even land you a few paying assignments.

I Recommend

Your purchase
supports this site.

When starting out, struggling writers often justify their lack of a web presence with the fact that they don’t have a steady stream of income to support the cost of owning and maintaining a web site. But with the cost of domain names, hosting, and designing so low these days, new and veteran writers simply cannot afford not to take advantage of owning their own piece of the web.

A well-designed web site is

a cost-effective portfolio to some of your best work

a showcase of your talents in a more appealing light

a detailed resume with pricing and skills that simply cannot be covered in a one page query letter or traditional resume

a cost-effective marketing tool that works for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

But what should your website include and what should you stay away from?

For starters, you don’t want to use a free web host that requires you to place advertising, pop-up or pop-under banners on your web site as these make you look unprofessional and definitely more like a “beginner.” To learn more about why you should purchase your own domain name, I suggest that you read an article on picking domain names at http://thedabblingmum.com/business/domainnames/index.htm.

Secondly, you want your website to represent your unique style while presenting prospective clients with an online portfolio of your skills and talents, so you want to stay away from an unfocused web site. What I mean is that you want to pick a target audience and write your web copy and design your web site to meet the needs of that target audience. What is the purpose of your web site? What do you want to get across to others? What do you want your web site to do for you? Do you want to sell products or a service? If you choose to do both, do your products and services compliment one another?

Third, you don’t want to lose your prospect once he or she has landed on your site, so you want to make sure that your web site is visually appealing and easy to navigate.

For emphasis, do not underline any words; as underlined words are known as clickable links in the world wide web.

Stay away from bright text and colored backgrounds as they can be very hard on the eyes; causing your new prospect to leave before he or she has gotten a chance to see what you have to offer.

Make sure that you do not load your pages with too many graphics, a slow loading page will easily send your prospect looking for a new site. And make sure that your graphics actually relate to the content of that page.

Keep your paragraphs short and to the point.

Stick to traditional fonts as not all browsers can see special fonts. Traditional fonts would be arial, times new roman, or verdana.

Don’t center the entire text on your page.

Fourth, you want to optimize your web site for the search engines. Glamour sites with flash videos, interacting scripts, and tons of graphics may look visually appealing, but they do nothing in the way of helping you rank higher in the search engines. Think about it, when you are looking for something what is the first place you think of? The Internet is a vast window of opportunities waiting to happen, and any traffic that comes from a search online means that person was specifically looking for what you have to offer.

And finally, promote your web site wherever you can. When you place an ad in the paper, mention your web site. When you send out resumes, queries, bid quotes, flyers, brochures, or other print material, include your web address. When you visit forums and message boards, include your url under your signature. When you send out emails, include your web address in your signature line.

Remember, your web site represents you. It can be the first thing someone sees or the last thing. Leave them with a lasting impression, so that they can’t help but want to hire you.

Now, my teenage son is starting to think it is okay to never apologize for his actions. I believe that if you’ve done someone wrong or hurt someone’s feelings, you are obligated to apologize. How can I help my son learn it is okay to say, “I am sorry”?
-- Barbara

I Recommend

Your purchase
supports this site.

Dear Barbara,
There was a time when my husband never said he was sorry, either. It wasn’t because he wasn’t sorry; it was simply because he was never really taught to verbalize such things. And while I tried to explain to him that his silence was teaching our son to do the same, he didn’t understand. But six years ago, my husband wanted an apology from my son and he never got it. That was the eye opener. That was the day that my husband realized his silence was just as teachable as his actions and his words.

All that to say, until your husband is ready to step up to the plate and help instill that value in your son, you can’t make your husband apologize in front of your son or force him to make your son apologize.

Having said that, you can help your son understand it is okay to apologize by setting the example yourself. When you do something wrong, apologize. When you blow up and realize you’ve overreacted, apologize. When you punished your son and later realized you were in the wrong, apologize. When you say something you meant to be a positive, but your son took it as a negative, apologize.

But don’t apologize for the mere sake of setting an example. Only apologize when it’s true, heartfelt, and warranted. Apologizing when you really don’t mean it does nothing but instill in your son that apologizing is fake and doesn’t really mean anything; so why do it?

When you see someone hurting someone else and there’s no remorse, talk about it with your son. Discuss what you observed and ask him how things could have been handled differently. Let him explore those feelings from a safe distance. What he’ll learn in the process is that saying, “I’m sorry” isn’t as scary as it seems. He’ll learn that while apologizing can mean letting down your guard, it doesn’t mean you are less of a man, less of a human being for doing so. What he’ll learn is that apologizing, for the right reasons and when in truth, is a really mature, healthy, manly thing to do.

Most types of advertisements attempt to interrupt the prospective buyer and make them think about your product. However, Adwords has a completely different approach. It waits until the buyer is searching for a solution to their problem via search engines and presents our advertisement at exactly the right time. You only pay when a prospective buyer clicks on your advertisement. Better still, if you sell your product to a specific geographical location you can specify that your advertisement will only appear within a certain geographical area.

For so many artists, and non-artists alike, art truly is a form of therapy that washes away past sins, releases stress, and brings balance and joy to life.

"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls."
-- Pablo Picasso.

The higher the paper ranks in the search engines, the better for
you!

To get the most mileage out of it, make sure to include a link back to a
specific landing page on your business website. For example, you can include
a discount offer for visiting a page like http://www.YourWebsite.com/AdDiscount.html and requesting a quote using a form prepared for this purpose. That way, you even can measure the effectiveness of your campaign, and fine-tune your ad accordingly.

You just have to learn the ropes. There are a number of “tricks of the trade” that you have to master, but they are all easy and fun. The first thing to know is that reporters are constantly searching for interesting stories to run, and they will gladly help you to promote your business, if you know what to say. Many people don’t get their press releases published because they are…BORING. Nobody wants to hear how you just launched your new product, hired a new person or are having a sale. BUT…reporters (and people who read the newspaper) are always eager to read interesting, humorous, exciting, intriguing or thought provoking stories.

So the first “trick” is to learn how to create an interesting “story” for the reporter. It’s easier than you may think. Then you have to present it in a format the reporters are accustomed to reading. This includes an eye-grabbing headline, a quote, the “meat” of the story, and your contact information. All on one page. Don’t be wordy. There is more to this process than will fit in this small space. But again, it is very easy to learn.

Lastly, you need to identify the media outlets and reporters that you want to contact, and locate their contact information. This is all publicly available information. If your business is locally based, you may only need a handful of contacts. You can email your press release, or fax it. You can even fax it from your computer.

If your business has national appeal, you literally have thousands of media opportunities at your fingertips. Many small businesses mistakenly assume their business is “local-only” and lose out on huge income opportunities. I have made writing and sending press releases a regular part of my business regimen. The result? Rarely a week goes by that I don’t have an article published about me and my business somewhere in the nation. I’ve done scores of radio and television interviews as well.

I even taught my system to my ten-year old son who was doing a community service project to help feed hungry kids. He ended up with 167 articles, two television interviews and a corporate sponsorship within 30 days. And he fed a lot of hungry kids.

If a 10 year old can do it, so can you!

I think it is the first video game system, aside from Sega Genesis, that I actually enjoy!

Just recently, I discovered that a new game is about to hit the market called, "PIRATES AGAINST NINJAS IN A BATTLE OF DODGEBALL".

According to the press release, "Leading videogame publisher, SouthPeak Interactive Corporation, introduces a new arcade-style videogame, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, featuring iconic characters in the ultimate playground sport of dodgeball. Using a ball to tag opponents out of the game, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball transforms the innocent childhood game of dodgeball into an action packed, mind-blowing battle between Pirates, Ninjas and other eccentric groups of characters."

What do you think? They have been around for decades, are relatively inexpensive (you can even create your own as needed on your computer), are universally accepted, are small enough to keep plenty on hand, and have (blank) backs for jotting down initial meeting notes. A smart man once told me, "If you don't have business cards, you're not in business."
