Commonwealth Bank East Bay branch to re-open Thursday, Oakes Field to remain closed for damage assessment after flooding

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Commonwealth Bank announced today that its East Bay branch will re-open for normal business hours tomorrow, Thursday, May 23, while its Oakes Field branch will remain closed temporarily.

"The heavy rains that we had on Tuesday caused some flooding in the East Bay branch," said Commonwealth Bank President Ian Jennings. "We've been able to get in there and assess the situation, and we were fortunate. There was no significant loss of equipment. We remained closed on Wednesday to ensure that our customers would not be subjected to anything that would make them uncomfortable. We wanted to make sure it was completely dry."

Oakes Field -- the busy branch that is scheduled for renovation and expansion later this year -- was not so fortunate. Fire broke out after an apparent lightening strike hit the building. Firemen and police had to fight the fire during the height of Tuesday's stormy weather.

"The police were there last night despite the weather so we were very appreciative," said Jennings. "We need to wait until they have completed their investigation and we can get in and do a full damage assessment."

In the meantime, customers are asked to visit any other Commonwealth Bank branch. There are eight others on New Providence and numerous off-site ABMs as well as those located at branches.

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Twenty five young males from Eleuthera piled into McDonald’s recently to be treated to happy meals and a hearty helping of lessons they say they'll never forget -- what goes wrong when you don't go right. Together with Men of Faith, two leaders from Teen Challenge know what it is like to take the wrong path, to be homeless or sleep in an abandoned truck, to wake up in prison, challenged these young men to become tomorrow’s leaders.

The young men, eleven and twelfth graders of Central Eleuthera High in Governor’s Harbour, were brought to New Providence by the Men of Faith, a non-denominational group of volunteers. The one day trip to the capital started with a visit to Her Majesty’s Prison at Fox Hill where the young men got a glimpse of prison environment. Prisoners struck fear into the teens with stories of the hardships of incarceration and what led to it.

“After today I won’t be getting into trouble at all,” a student promised, “Jail was hard and scary.”

“I’m from Palmetto Point, Eleuthera," said Earla Bethel, President of DanBrad Ltd. "So I can identify with these youngsters and what it’s like to come from a quiet Family Island, trying to find their way in life. I am delighted to partner with Men of Faith & Teen Challenge in giving these young men some lessons of Life. It brings me great pleasure to give back to my community.”

NASSAU, Bahamas -- It was a 20-minute drive from the oceanfront luxury of the gated community where Ronnie and Antonia Meade live to a heavily patrolled, fenced in area off Fox Hill Road where some 20 students go to school but it took less than a minute for the two worlds to connect and for the kindness of one to touch the hearts of the other.

The Meades, who have quietly donated more than 400 mini iPads over the years, agreed to make one donation public when they heard of the tough breaks some of the kids at the Penn-Pratt Co-ed School had faced.

"We were told that the school had finally gotten the internet but the computers were so old they couldn't support the internet," said Meade. "The person who knew about the situation reached out to us but insisted that we come to the school and see for ourselves."

What they saw were students whose initial scepticism turned to disbelief then to joy as Principal of the school Joseph Rolle explained the 10 wrapped mini iPads were a gift for them.

The kids -- girls who live at the Willaemae Pratt Centre and boys who live at Simpson Penn, gender segregated facilities for students often referred by the courts -- were thrilled but Meade looked around the classroom used as an assembly hall and said 10 was not enough.

Lauryn Rolle may have been overcome with emotion when she was named Primary School Student of the Year, but make no mistake about it the young lady is definitely not a shrinking violet. And when you speak with her, you will find that she’s a young lady who seems to know where she’s going and exactly how she’s going to get there and what she has to do to accomplish it. Case-in-point, the St. Thomas More Primary School student had aspirations of becoming a marine biologist, but let go of those “pie-in-the-cloud” dreams when she learned how much money they make. Her research caused her to change her mind. She said the salary was not attractive to her. She now wants to become a neurosurgeon … and that fits in well with the pre-teen whose favorite subject just happens to be science.

Picking up the coveted primary school award over 121 other nominees according to the 11-year-old pre-teen was “awesome.”

“I felt fantastic … my thoughts couldn’t flow properly at that time,” said Lauryn as she reflected on her win. “I was hoping to be named student of the year and I prayed and I prayed and I hoped and told everybody at my church, Mt Tabor, to pray for me.”

But she said her peers all told her she had the award in the bag before her name was even called.

Taking the title to the St. Thomas More campus in its 17th year made her feel honored, especially as she was the first person from her school to win the award. St. Thomas More recognized her accordingly with a surprise assembly in her honor yesterday.

“I was quite surprised,” said Lauryn, the daughter of Pia and Herman Rolle. “No one even told me. My mom and dad knew. Everyone looked me in the face and didn’t even tell me.”

While she takes pride in her accomplishment, the one thing she will not allow is cockiness. She believes in humility and not allowing awards won to change her attitude.

Second place went to Allie Pinder of Spanish Wells All Age School. Mackenzie Peet of Temple Christian School was third. Fourth place went to Xavier’s Lower School’s Dante Cooper. Bayview Academy’s Kiran Halkitis finished fifth.

Readying for the transition

She was back to her regular routine at school preparing for the year to come to a close in less than a month. She said she was looking forward to enjoying her summer break before her transition to high school. Even with summer approaching the Primary School Student of the Year still had her education on her mind.

“It’s a very big part of my life, and I take it [education] very seriously. I don’t mess around with it and I hate to see people who mess around with their education, especially when you go to a private school like this [St. Thomas More] and the school fees are very expensive,” said Lauryn. “You don’t want to waste your parents’ money.” Since she will be heading to St. Augustine’s College (SAC) in the fall, it’s a mantra she will continue to hold onto.

And she has parents who she says have instilled a good work ethic within her. At the end of every month she said her mother gave her what they called a unit test, and everything she got wrong or didn’t understand, they came back to on the next month’s test. That coupled with the fact that she did her homework daily when she got home without anyone really having to tell her to do it, she said added up to the student who is graduating with a near-perfect (96.94 out of a possible 100) grade point average.

“Nobody really has to tell me to get my homework done. As soon as I get home I know I have to do it, no question about it. But my mom always brags that it’s her, but my dad has some influence in it too.”

As she leaves St. Thomas More, Lauryn says she’s taking a wealth of knowledge and memories with her.

“I always say that these teachers who teach you in primary school lay the foundation and you have to build on it when you go to high school,” she said.

As she prepares for the next rung on her educational ladder, Lauryn says the upcoming summer break will be weird for her because she knows she will not return to St. Thomas More. She says this summer for her will be about transition, but she plans to continue her old habit which entails relaxing for the first part of the summer, then going over her books toward the middle of August to prepare herself for her return to the classroom.

She’s given St. Thomas More it’s first student of the year award, and her advice to students that will be nominated from the school in the years to come is to always do their best. And she says even if they don’t place, that they should not be depressed or discouraged, because she said just to be nominated is an achievement.

“Don’t be afraid, don’t get nervous, but keep it safe in God and even if you win or even come first runner-up, remain humble and don’t let it change your attitude and don’t show it off. Be proud in your accomplishments, but don’t let cockiness take you over,” said Lauryn.

A legacy in education

She also happens to be the great-granddaughter of legendary educators Theodore Grant (T.G.) Glover and the great-niece of Carlton E. Francis (both of whom have schools named in their honor) and she said she knows they’re both proud of her.

“I know they’re looking down at me from heaven and they know that my granddad, my mom and my dad and everybody did a great job,” said Lauryn.

She received a $5,000 scholarship and a computer. She’s also proud of her sash and her nominee medal as well. Her parents will also host a graduation/congratulatory party in her honor to which Lauryn said she’s inviting her peers from both sixth grade classes at her school, the teachers and the administrators.

While she knows it’s smart to get an education, Lauryn also knows that she needs to be well-rounded and participates in dance, which she says is her favorite extracurricular activity with Brownies a close second.

St. Thomas More principal Ellen Daniels was excited and happy for Lauryn’s accomplishment.

“I give God all the thanks and glory for it, and then her teachers and her parents who helped to mold her,” said Daniels who has headed the school since 2001. “I was just excited when they called her name.”

Daniels who said she tries to get to know her students on a one-on-one basis described Lauryn as mature and mannerly for her age, and as a student who is always willing to help other students.

“Although she may be an A [grade] student, she’s willing to get out there and help other students. And whenever you ask her to do something she does it without any fuss,” said the principal. “She’s one of those students who I hope other students would follow her lead and look at her as a role model.”

As Lauryn prepares to graduate and move on to SAC, Daniels said she wanted Lauryn to always keep God in her life, and to remember the rules and the morals they set down for her at the school. And that she would continue to uphold the standards she learned while there.

She also said that she wanted Lauryn to ensure that education was not her only focus but for her to continue to be a well-rounded person.

“I’m hoping the children behind her will see that [Lauryn] didn’t just get it [award] because she is an A student, but because she’s a well-rounded person and she focuses on the Lord … and she talks about that and the things that she does at her church. I want them to know that they have to be focused, and that if they’re not focused they will not get there,” said Daniels.

The principal also credited Lauryn’s parents with her success. She said they are the type of parents that are good role models who are always helping out and who make themselves available for their daughter to take her where she needs to go.

“I would hope that my other parents would take the lead and follow some of the standards that her [Lauryn’s] parents have set down for her.”

Since its inception the awards program has awarded over $800,000 in scholarships. Fifty-two of this year’s nominees were awarded scholarships.

Baha Mar casino seeks Asian flare

MACAU - Pete Wu knows a thing or two about Asian gambling.

Striding through The Venetian in a crisp suit, he navigates one of the largest and most crowded buildings in the world with efficiency and precision. He nods and shakes hands with everyone, from the lowly security guards to high rollers on a nearly 500,000-square-foot casino floor.

Wu has been a big player in Macau's gambling arena for years, serving as a top executive for Sands Macau. He later went into business development by focusing exclusively on VIP gamers from China and South East Asia.

And now, he belongs to Baha Mar.

"The most important element to differentiate yourself from other casinos is to have the best experience. Anyone can build a large or beautiful building. It is the service and actual experience that matters. The unique little touches," according to Wu, who is the $3.5 billion resort's new senior vice president of international casino marketing and alliances.

Wu will be one of the important faces at Baha Mar's exhibit at G2E Asia 2013, the largest gaming exhibition in the world. The event, starting tomorrow, will be a launching pad for a major announcement by Baha Mar on its much-anticipated casino product.

Certainly, Macau's fingerprints will be all over what has been billed as the largest gaming facility in the Caribbean.

Wu described the up-and-coming destination as the first true east meets west casino. Baha Mar executives have made no secret of their intention to attract high-net-worth individuals from China and other Asian centers.

The resort is being built by China Construction America and financed by the Export-Import Bank of China.

While the casino should have the "flash and energy" of Las Vegas, it will also have the uniqueness, exoticism and service of Macau.

Wu told Guardian Business that in Macau, eating at gaming tables can be quite common. Asian gamblers tend to be focused and dedicated at the tables, often preferring to save time and money when it comes to food. A similar approach could find its way into sections of Baha Mar's casino, including an Asian noodle soup pit stop specifically designed for efficient eating.

The Bahamian mega resort has even enlisted Feng Shui masters to analyze and craft certain aspects and corners of the casino. Fen Shui is a Chinese system of geometry and design believed to promote fortune and a positive spiritual experience.

"Colors are important. Carpets have Bahamian and Asian elements, all luck driven. They have symbols of luck and fortune. In general there are a lot of Chinese elements in the design," Wu explained.

Combined with the aesthetic will be table games and slot machines that one might find on a gaming floor in Macau. Executives have considered a Macau-style gaming section exclusively for this type of play.

"Most of important of all, a key target market are Asians. Not Asians just from Asia, but Asians in the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe," Wu told Guardian Business.

Robert "Sandy" Sands, senior vice president of administration and external relations, revealed on Tuesday that Baha Mar is seeking up to 25,000 high-net-worth gamblers from Asia each year.

The mega resort is focused on air service from that region in the hopes of building up to direct flights in Nassau.

Sands said that gaming will comprise up to one-third of all business at Baha Mar. The casino hotel will be the largest, joining Grand Hyatt, Mondrian and Rosewood-branded hotels.

He told Guardian Business yesterday there is a clear recognition that Asian tourists need to be comfortable in The Bahamas.

"We must provide amenities that meet their needs, in terms of cuisine, customs and expectations. There will be a number of ways to make them comfortable coming to this jurisdiction," he said.

For Wu's part, while he is now based in The Bahamas, his job is to create strategic alliances with international casino partners and brands to drive this traffic and create awareness of the Bahamian product.

He believes that The Bahamas has a unique opportunity to carve a strong position in the gaming world given the archipelago's beaches and tropical appeal, bringing the flare of Macau to these shores, but with a Bahamian flavor.

NASSAU, The Bahamas, and MACAU — Baha Mar Ltd. today announced that Global Gaming Asset Management (GGAM), one of the casino industry’s most successful management teams, has been retained to manage the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel, the centerpiece of the $3.5 billion Baha Mar integrated destination resort in The Bahamas, scheduled to open in December 2014.

GGAM’s senior executives William P. Weidner, Chief Executive Officer; Bradley H. Stone, President; and Garry Saunders, Executive Vice President, were involved with opening and managing the Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas and the Venetian Macao, and participated in the development the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore during their tenure with Las Vegas Sands. All other students are to remain at home, until further notice. This advisory impacts only schools on New Providence.

NEMA advises extreme caution in flooded areas

NASSAU, The Bahamas - The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, is strongly advising residents in the storm-impacted areas to move about with extreme caution due to excessive flooding particularly in low-laying areas.

Residents are also being strongly advised to switch off electricity from the main power sources in their homes and in other properties, if water is seeping under the doors and could impact electrical outlets.

Motorists are being encouraged to remain off the streets as vehicles are being stalled in flooded areas and left stranded along the roadways, which could hamper the easy flow of traffic.

Earlier alerts from the Bahamas Department of Meteorology advised individuals in the Northwest and Central Bahamas to remain alert for the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms, which will be capable of producing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, waterspouts and possible tornadic activity over a 24-hour period.
