About the Author
Amanda Havard has been telling stories since before she could write. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, where her first book was published in her elementary school library at age 7. She received Bachelor and Master degrees in education from Vanderbilt University. She currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her baby grand piano and more story ideas than she could tell in one lifetime.

My Take on the Book
This was a great sequel to the first book from the Survivors series. If you thought that first book had twists and turns watch out as the author even more in store for you this time. Not only is there adventure and intrigue, but you also are shown some great connections between the characters. In fact, one of the things that I love best about the author's writing is her ability to weave a tangled web of characters together in such a way to engage the reader, pulling them in so that they want to read more. This was definitely a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will continually be wondering what will come next. This was a great book that I highly recommend to all!

Teen substance abuse and violence is still a problem nationwide, leaving many parents scratching their heads for answers. So how do you get this age group to listen to the realities of this lifestyle? Let them hear the straight facts from someone who’s been down the road before – and has been clean for 17 years and gone on to become very successful.

Walter Rossie, Jr. grew up living a life of violence and crime that included evading law enforcement, getting caught red-handed by border agents with a duffel bag full of drugs, small stints of jail time, hopping freight trains and wandering through a dark subculture of homelessness and addiction.

What’s most remarkable is that he managed to breakout of that lifestyle 17 years ago and turn it all around – living an honorable life and reaching success in business, his personal life and serving as a mentor to kids in need, recovering alcoholics, the homeless and others who find themselves where he once was.

Now he’s on a national speaking tour around his new book, Escaping My Shadow, trying to reach as many teens as possible.

Some of his tips:

Change will only come when you truly want to change. No amount of preaching from friends, family or public service announcements will help you unless you want to help yourself. This is true for overcoming an addiction to drugs and alcohol, becoming independent and getting off welfare or unemployment and even more minor things you want to change in your life.
Sometimes you just have to hit the bottom. There’s no shame if you hit the bottom or an all-time low in your career, personal life or anything else. The bottom can be the start of going to the top.
Find role models to emulate. It really is true that we become the people we associate with, so spend more time with people who model the habits you want to mirror and less time with the negative influencers. If you want to move up in your career, network with people who’ve been successful in business. If you want to lose weight, hang around fit people.
Make it non-negotiable. You don’t negotiate taking a shower, so whatever you want to achieve make it non-negotiable. It’s not if it’s going to happen, but when it’s going to happen.

He says after all the lows he’s been through, if he can turn it around so can every other teenager going through rough times. His hope is that his message will inspire others and that he can help them find success, self-realization and confidence.

My Take on the Book
What was great about this book was the honesty that the author shows and the transformation that he goes through to take his life in a whole new direction. As you get to know the author you find yourself more and more amazed that a man who was in so much trouble while he was younger was able to turn it all around to now living a life where he is now able to work toward getting all teens on the right track in life. The book was well written and was very inspirational. As you go through this book you will be amazed at the experiences and the depth of despair that this author fell into and you will be amazed at the step-by-step changes that he made to make him the man he is today!

My Take on the Book
This was a very touching story of a father's love for his family but moreover the story of Henry and everything that he goes through in his life. Henry truly reaches out from the pages of the book and you feel like you get to know him, and you can see why he is as special of a boy as he is. The book was honest and open and you feel that the author is holding nothing back, but instead is opening a door into his life for any reader to enter. Be ready though as this book will touch you emotionally and you may find that there are times in which your heart hurts for the family and for Henry. A Great book and story and one that all should read!

DVD Review - The Mighty Macs

About the Movie
It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

My Take on the Movie
This was a great movie! I had never heard about this story before watching this movie, but after I watched it I went and tried to find out more information about the "real" story behind the movie. The movie was full of both action and fun as well as great acting and characters. While this is not filled with top name actors, I have to commend all of the actors as they all did a great job to develop a movie that really showed a strong team. The movie also was a great one that shows great examples of dedication, courage and bravery in the midst of adversity which is something that as a parent I want my children to learn. This was a great family film that I would highly recommend!

My Take on the Product
These sippy cups were amazing, and the click lock technology that they developed make a parent's life so much easier. On top of this, I have to say that I loved the overall ergonomic design of the cups as they were made for younger hands.On top of this my youngest thought that the cups were so cool and she in no certain terms stated that she no longer wanted to use her old sippy cups. Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) will release WeBop: A Family Jazz Party, a CD featuring kid-tested and approved music on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. The recording brings the very best of JALC’s WeBop classes in NYC home to families worldwide. Critically-acclaimed drummer and music director Matt Wilson leads an intergenerational band of celebrated jazz musicians, including trumpeter Marcus Printup and trombonist Vincent Gardner of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Doug Wamble and 90-year-old percussion legend and NEA Jazz Master Candido Camero, to bring a playful approach to classic jazz tunes.

Featuring songs like Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” Bob Thiele’s “What a Wonderful World,” John Coltrane’s “Syeeda’s Song Flute,” and originals from the WeBop classroom, the CD covers the full range of jazz music from New Orleans marches and Delta blues to free jazz. All are welcoming to listeners of every age, inviting families to move, sing, and play together. “On this recording we gathered an amazing cast who maintain a joyous sense of immaturity,” says Wilson, whose own children sing on the CD. “The sessions were like a big play date. We gave them the music and allowed them to create in the sonic sandbox. My Take on the CD
As a person who used to play a lot of jazz music back when I was younger and a person who still enjoys listening to jazz music, this CD was great! Full of great music and fun, you can tell through the music that the people in this group of musicians had a blast making the album and you and your family will love to listen and experience this music as well. So introduce your kids today to some great jazz music today and let their imagination soar through the music that will get your and their feet tapping!

My Take on the Book
I have read the trilogy of the Hunger Games books and I have been looking forward to reading and learning more about the movie that was coming out. Seeing that the books were so popular I have been excited about seeing if the movie can live up to the books. This book was amazing as it gave so much information about the inner-workings of the movie. I was interested to read more about the casting especially as many of the actors were ones that I knew very little about. On top of that though the images from the movie itself was worth the reading of the book itself as they gave the reader the opportunity to truly get themselves ready for a thrill ride of movie that will be coming out very soon!

Book Review - Dream Big, Little Pig

My Take on the Book
Poppy is such a great character, full of little pig with BIG dreams. What I liked about the book was that not only did it have a strong plot, but also very beautiful images. The book shows kids that they need to be determined and willing to keep trying things until they find the thing that they are good at and not merely giving up. I read this book to my daughters the other night and ever since they have been asking me to read it over and over again. I have to say as a parent I have no problem with this as the messages contained within are ones that I want my daughters to learn and to live on a daily basis. This was a great book that I highly recommend!

My Take on Ooma
I am the type of person that is always looking for a deal, and when it comes to my phone service, I seem that I am always paying more and more even though I have bundled my phone, internet and cable, I still find that I am paying quite a bit, so when I heard about Ooma, I was excited to see what it had to offer What I was most impressed with was how much this could save me overall, if what it had to say was true.

First, I have to say that in setting this up I was impressed to find how easy this was to setup and I was also excited to find that I was able to keep my existing phone number. It only took a few minutes to set up the system. Beyond this, it took a little while for my home number to be ported, but after that I was ready to go!

The bigger test was the quality of the sound for the phone. In setting this up and starting the service I found that the service and sound were very strong and of high quality. I actually did not notice much of a difference at all. As I continued to use this, I found that the service was reliable as well.

All-in-all I have been impressed thus far. I have not received a bill yet but I do not foresee there being anything new that will arise in the time between now and the receipt of the first bill. Book Review - My Aunt Bonnie: A Child's Story of Love and Loss

About the Book
The story starts during happy times, with visits to Atlanta, birthday parties, and a collection of cars. In the fall, there is a sad turn of events when Aunt Bonnie dies and goes to heaven. Will is left to work out his grief and comes to a "smile across his heart" as he remembers his teaching and thinks of what Aunt Bonnie may be doing in her new home.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that talks of the loss of a loved one that speaks to a child in a way a child can relate to and understand. The loss of a loved one can be traumatic and confusing for a child, and especially if the person is close, this becomes even more difficult for a child to grapple with. This book provides a child with a better understanding of death and what it means as well as provides parents or loved ones a platform by which they can talk to their children about this loss. The book was well written with quality illustrations and a strong story line. I highly recommend this for any family who has lost a loved one as this is a book that will greatly assist with the grieving and healing process!

If you are looking for a book that will open your mind to prayer on a daily basis, this is definitely the one to go with, and if you have a young child, this also provides them with the perfect way to get to know the power of prayer!

Creamy Dijon Drumsticks, $1.69 per serving
1 ½ lb. small red potatoes, each cut in half (or quarters, if larger)
Salt and pepper
8 Medium chicken drumsticks (2 ¼ lb. total), skin removed
3 tbsp. plus ¼ cup Dijonnaise (creamy mustard)
2/3 cup panko (Japanese-style bread crumbs)
2 Medium celery sticks, thinly sliced

1) Preheat oven to 450◦ F. In 4-quart saucepan, place potatoes, enough water to cover, and ¼ teaspoon salt; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover saucepan and simmer potatoes 10 to 12 minutes, or until just fork-tender.

2) Meanwhile, line 15” by 10” jelly-roll pan with nonstick foil. Brush chicken drumsticks with 3 tablespoons Dijonnaise and coat with panko, pressing to adhere. Place chicken on prepared pan and bake 25 minutes, or until crumbs are golden and juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with top of knife.

3) Drain potatoes well and place in medium bowl. Add celery, ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper, and remaining ¼ cup Dijonnaise; stir to coat vegetables. Makes 5 cups potato salad. Serve salad with chicken.

Baked Cavatelli with Sausage & Broccoli Rabe, $2.08 per serving
1 bunch broccoli rabe (about 1 lb.)
1 lb. cavatelli or orecchiette
¾ lb. hot Italian-sausage links, casings removed
2 tsp. olive oil
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1/8 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
1½ cups reduced-fat (2%) milk
1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce or 1 cup tomato-basil sauce
4 oz. Fontina cheese, cut into ¼ inch cubes
¾ cup freshly grated Romano cheese

Preheat oven to 400◦F. Heat large covered saucepot of salted water to boiling on high. Meanwhile, trim stems from broccoli rabe; discard. Coarsely chop remaining broccoli rabe; set aside.
Add pasta to boiling water, and cook 2 minutes less than label directs. Drain pasta; return to saucepot.
Meanwhile, in nonstick 12-inch skillet on medium-high, cook sausage 5 minutes, or until browned, breaking up sausage with side of spoon. Discard fat. Add oil, garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes. Reduce heat to medium; cook 2 minutes, or until garlic is golden.
Stir in broccoli rabe; cover and cook 2 minutes, or until broccoli rabe begins to wilt, stirring. Add tomatoes and cook 5 minutes, or until tomatoes split.
In 2-cup liquid measuring cup, whisk cornstarch into milk. Stir milk mixture into sausage mixture in skillet; heat to boiling, stirring frequently. Boil 1 minute to thicken slightly.
Add sausage mixture, tomato sauce, Fontina, and ½ cup Romano to pasta in saucepot; toss to combine. Transfer pasta mixture to 8 individual 1 ½ -cup ramekins; sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup Romano. Place ramekins on large baking sheet or jelly-roll pan for easier handling. Bake 15 minutes, or until center is hot and top is golden.

My Take on the Bookazine
This was a great book of great recipes. In looking through the grouping of recipes I found so many recipes that sounded great and I was amazed to find that they all were $10 or less, which always helps when you are watching a budget! If you are looking for great recipes for a great price, look no further!

About the Book
Based on the popular blog "The Year of Living Fearlessly," Amber Karlins' book, entitled My Year of Living Fearlessly, chronicles Amber's attempt to regain her sense of adventure and remove the limitations fear had placed on her life. In an effort to claim a bigger, more exciting life, she decided to spend an entire year facing the things that scared and intimidated her the most. Over the course of fifty-two weeks, she found herself in fifty-two anxiety-riddled situations, including a stand-up comedy competition,a bug tornado, a fire-eating competition, and a night spent alone in a haunted hotel. The result is a hilarious series of misadventures, heart palpitations, and triumphs that not only remind her of who she is but also what we can accomplish when we stop allowing fear and insecurities to define who we are and dictate what we can and cannot do.

My Take on the Book
This book was so much more than I expected. I knew that the book would be an honest tale of adventure and experiences, but I was surprised to find that there were so many funny circumstances that came up as well within the story. Also, I loved how open and honest the author was as she lays out all of the experiences in such a way that allows you as the reader to live the experience. You can see the sighs and heard the sounds, all you have to do is keep reading for the story to come alive. This story also made me think of the things that I would place on a list to tackle if I was to live in a similar way. I truly envy the author for setting aside her fear and conquering the obstacles (real or perceived) that lay ahead of her, and I hope that this will only continue as she grows older. I highly recommend this book to all!

My Take on the Book
What was great about this book was that it offers you amazing practical tips to give you insights into getting your foot in the door for an interview for any job. You leave the reading of this book with so much information and resources that will help you right away in any job search that you are in or that you are planning in the near future. The book was an easy read and I came away with a ton of great ideas. One of the things that I really liked was the idea of looking at yourself as a brand. What a great concept and what great ideas. You will be able to transform the way that you look at yourself and at your future. A great book!

Book Review - Polar Bears Aren't White, You Know.

Daniel D’Auria not only teaches young readers about the true coloring of polar bears in his children’s book, “Polar Bears Aren’t White, You Know!” (ISBN 0984985018), he also brings attention to the plight of these unique, endangered creatures and other animals as a result of global climate change. Through the use of his own striking wildlife photography, D’Auria reveals a world little-seen by most, and one which he shows is fading fast.

My Take on the Book
Dr. Daniel D'Auria has written an informative book on polar bears using beautiful photographs that he took with the assistance from the people at Churchill Wild. The book is written in rhyme and flows beautifully with the photographs on each page.

The photographs show polar bears in many settings and doing many things: relaxing, playing, wrestling,and even loving each other. Children love to watch polar bears so I believe the content with the photographs will be enjoyed by the child as well as the adult reading the book.

Dr. D'Auria makes a point of telling his readers that polar bears are quickly becoming an endangered animal due to losing their habitat and global warming. After reading this book you may want to brainstorm how you and your family can help save the polar bear.

Book Review - To Know the Sea

Far away in a mountain kingdom, lives Isola, a little princess who longs for the Sea. Despite the heroic efforts of several young men from the village, no one is sucessful in bringing the sea to Isola, until Peter, an old sailor, arrives with his pack of books and his memories. He teaches Isola the lore of the sea and when she is ready, she comes down from her mountain home and sets sail in a ship of her own. An original fairy tale, this book with its delightful,quirky illustrations, reveals a child's unquenchable spirit and her awakening to the unknown world over the horizon.

My Take on the Book
I so enjoyed this book. The story is original and based on a little girl, Isola,and her wish to know the sea. She is so unhappy in her mountain kingdom that several young men attempt, although unsuccessfully , to bring the sea to her.

This little princess, Isola, perseveres in her quest and at first it seems no one can help. Then one day a sailor, Peter,brings books and opens up a wonderful world of the sea to Isola. He relates his experiences and she finally leaves the mountain top kingdom to ride a ship and experience the sea.

I thought it interesting the author named the little girl Isola which means island in Italian. Also that she chose Peter as her sea teacher, as he was a famous fisherman.

You will delight in the illustrations. Rhett Ransom Pennell clearly shows us the emotions of all the characters and especially the frustration of Isola and her parents as she seeks the knowledge she so yearns to understand.

I believe both the adult reading this book and the child who is fortunate enough to listen to it, will find ways to identify with the characters and the timeless story about seeking knowledge and of course the patient and loving teacher who relays the information.

It is a new fairy tale you will read often!

My Take on the Blu-ray
This series is awesome! I was a huge fan of the original Transformers series and over the years have kept tabs on the additional shows that were added to the body of work which is the Transformers, including beast Wars and now Prime, and from what I can see and from what I have experienced, Prime tends to pull together the best in all of them. If you have never seen Transformers Prime but are a fan of the Transformers then this set is for you. Filled with the entire first season of the series, you will get your fill of the Transformers in their glory and I know that you will love every minute of it! Great animation and plot will also transfix you throughout the entire 10 hours of the Blu-ray! This is a must have for any true fan!

My Take on the DVD
My daughters are big fans of this series. Seeing that we have the HUB on cable, they have had the opportunity to watch this and experience the "Magic" of the My Little Pony characters. As a parent though I have to say that I am continually impressed with the caliber of the shows and the messages that they convey and this only continues on this DVD. The show covers BIG issues such as friendship, trust, sharing and so much more. On top of this the show is filled with some great animation as well. All-in-all, any fan of the My Little Pony enterprise will enjoy this new addition to the body of work!
