The year is 1907. It is 10 years after the Phantom’s disappearance from the Paris Opera House. He has escaped to a new life in New York where he lives amongst the screaming joy rides and freak-shows of Coney Island. In this new electrically-charged world, he has finally found a place for his music to soar. All that is missing is his love - Christine Daaé. Now one of the world’s finest sopranos, Christine is struggling in an ailing marriage to Raoul. So, it is with excitement she accepts an invitation to travel to New York and perform at a renowned opera house. In a final bid to win back her love, the Phantom lures Christine, her husband, and their young son Gustave from Manhattan, to the glittering and glorious world of Coney Island… not knowing what is in store for them.
My Take on the Movie
This was a great collection on one Blu-ray/DVD. I had seen the Phantom at the Fox Theater in Detroit when it first came out many years ago and have been a fan ever since. Now, I have a new generation in my own family which I would like to share this with. My daughters are both starting to enjoy the music, sights and sounds of broadway and I am so excited to share with them some of the amazing performances that are in store for them if they so choose to take them in. This Blu-Ray provided me a great way to share another great musical with them form the comfort of my own home. My girls simply loved the music and the performance. I was impressed to see how well done the Blu-ray was and the sights and sounds were not lost on the video itself so it was like I was sitting in the audience. All-in-all, if you are a fan of musical or simply the Phantom of the Opera, this is definitely a must have for your collection!
Unlike any other book out there...it's a book, activities, coloring pages, a year-long journal, a keepsake, and more - ALL IN ONE. With its unique double-sided design, it gives parents an easy way to connect with their kids, all while having a blast sharing fun facts about each other (like what 3 people they'd choose to run a relay race!)

On one side, you'll find "Where on Earth Am I?" an interactive story about Fassa, a cat who sees the world from a unique purrrspective. Along with the story, this side has plot twists, easy-to-do activities, coloring pages, a hidden picture search, a fun quiz, and more! On the flipside, you'll find "Fassa's 52 Weeks of Fun" - an easy, silly way for children to express and share things about themselves throughout a year in their life. Along with 52 prompted journal entries, each week also features a kid-friendly quote,a word definition from "Where on Earth Am I", and a hilarious joke your child will love to tell.

My Take on the Book
This book has two parts. One half is a story about Fassa, the cat, and his eventual adoption by a human. This half has the story which the child and family read together and following the story are all kinds of activities to do relating to what happened in the story. It is a section dedicated to relating your own discoveries and feelings about events. There are lots of questions to answer and lots of good discussion questions for the entire family.

The other half, flip the book around, is totally different. Each page is an activity page that focuses on the child who is writing in the book. For example they write their name , attach their picture, write in their height and weight, foot measurement, etc. Each page has a joke, word with its definition , quote by a famous person, and then an activity at the bottom of the page.

A child that enjoys writing and working in activity books about "him or her" would find this a worthy way to spend free time. It looks like fun to me!
Welcome to the Hall of Horrors, HorrorLand's Hall of Fame for the truly terrifying.

Lee Hargrove wishes he could be lucky like his friend Cory Duckworth. Cory has to be the luckiest kid on the planet. Even Laura Groden, the girl Lee has a crush on, prefers to hang out with Cory. All Lee wants in life is to get a scholarship to Summer Sports Camp. But there's only one scholarship from his school and he's competing against Cory and Laura. Then Lee receives a good luck charm in the mail. It's a vulture's claw and Lee's life seems to change immediately. Until bad things start to happen. The vulture's claw is bringing really bad luck. Lee tries to give it to Cory as a birthday present but Cory already has one of his own. When both boys' luck take a turn for the worse, Laura wins the scholarship and admits to sending the bad luck charms to both boys.

My Take on the Book
This was a great addition to the Goosebumps series. If you like to have a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and at the same time send a chill up your spine this is definitely one to read. As a father of a girl who loves these books, I gave this book to my eldest daughter and I have to say that I was amazed to see how quickly she devoured the book. Usually she will dabble and move from one book to another, but this was one book that she did not want to put down. When I picked it up I saw why. The book was well written with a plot that captured your attention and kept you engaged form beginning to end. This was a great book and one that I would highly recommend.

About the Book

About the Author
Nicole writes fiction and nonfiction that’s focused on helping teens make good choices and bridging the gap in parent/teen communication. Nicole is also the host of Teen Talk Radio at www.choicesradio.com, where she talks with teens and special guests about the real issues young people face today, and she loves getting out among teens and parents when speaking at youth groups and conferences.
My Take on the Book
As a father of two girls this book is a great resource that I know my girls will enjoy as they get older. It is filled with so many valuable resources and questions and answers from real girls about real issues that are important to them. Whet I loved about the book was that it is written not only from the author Nicole O'Dell's point of view but that she incorporates her own daughter's thoughts as well and when you are reading the answers, you can clearly identify which voice is from whom. This is a must have book for any tween girl or their parent!

A classic love story unfolds in the best Disney tradition as a lovely young pedigreed
cocker spaniel named Lady, who lives a pampered life, finds herself falling romantically
for Tramp, an amorous street-smart pooch without prospects. Although they have fun
together on several dates, including a sentimental spaghetti dinner by moonlight at
Tony’s restaurant, their relationship is strained not only by Lady’s loyalty to her human
family and their newborn baby, but by Tramp’s devil-may-care attitude that eventually
gets Lady in trouble and tossed into the dog pound. However, good-hearted Tramp
redeems himself by saving the baby from potential harm and thus wins Lady’s love and
the affection of her human family.
My Take on the Movie
I had not seen this movie in some time so when I got this sent to me I was excited to see it again and to share it for the first time with my girls. The Blu-ray version of this movie was just remarkable. The colors and sounds just jump off the screen and you get drawn into the true love story which is Lady and the Tramp. On top of a great story there is also some great music shared in this movie too which is a hidden gem within the film. With talent such as Peggy Lee you can see that Disney had the pulse on their audience in trying to draw in the younger crowds back in the day. All-in-all though, this is definitely a movie that you should add to your collection or reintroduce your family too, you will not be disappointed!
To answer this dilemma, MeFeedia, the video discovery engine, today launched Kids Videos, a curated video application that brings a wide variety of safe, fun and educational videos into one easy-to-use application. The app, available for iPad and Kindle Fire tablets, is available for download today.

Kids Videos leverages the reach of MeFeedia’s content offerings to pull together popular and family-friendly videos from around the web. The app enables browsing and watching videos with a touch or swipe. Users can like and dislike videos, and designate videos to “Watch Later” for those favorites that kids just can’t get enough of. The application allows for filtering by genre using an on or off switch, and based on view-through rates, automatically discovers and delivers what a viewer would likely be most interested in at that moment.

Most importantly, the newly unveiled app brings ease of mind to parents when leaving their kids alone with their iPad or Kindle Fire. “As a father of 3 children, I’ve seen how natural and easy tablets are for children to use, but I have never felt comfortable leaving them alone to watch videos on the tablet for fear of what they might find,” said MeFeedia CEO, Frank Sinton. “With the Kids Videos app, I finally have a video app where I know what they are watching is both safe and fun”.

Kids Videos is available exclusively for iPad in iTunes or here and Kindle Fire here or in the Amazon Appstore. When kids get sick, parents want nothing more than to “make it all better.” We pull out every comfort tool in our arsenal – chicken soup, extra cuddles, and more cartoons.

Just in time for the peak of cold and flu season comes The Sneezy Wheezy Day (Talking Bird Books, January 1, 2012, $14.95), a book every parent will want to keep on hand for when the sniffles come on.

Written by nurse and mom of three, Sharon Cramer, The Sneezy Wheezy Day, is the third installment of the Cougar Cub Tales - an award winning children’s picture book series that follows the adventures of a brother and sister cougar cub.

In The Sneezy Wheezy Day, brother cub isn’t feeling well. As he and sister cub seek help for his cold, they encounter many well-intentioned forest friends who offer silly home remedies. One friend even tells brother cub, “Tickle your nose with the tail of a goose and do it before the next blue moon rise!” Although the recommendations help, the final remedy is a sibling’s love.

Cramer wrote the first book in the series, Lost and Alone about sibling rivalry, when her youngest son was born 18 years ago. As a mom to two older sons at the time, Cramer says she felt like an expert on “brotherly love” already. The second installment in the series, I’m Just Like You addresses intolerance.

Cramer illustrates the Cougar Cub Tales books in watercolor, with each picture taking her between 18-24 hours to create. She chose cougar cubs because she wanted to create characters that spoke strongly of the Pacific Northwest, where she lives.

SHARON CRAMER is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and avid competitive equestrian. She is also the author of, soon to be released, Marlo and the Monster, and is working on a new young adult series called The Cerulean Star. She lives in Spokane, Wash.

To learn more and hear audio of Cramer reading the books, please visit: www.talkingbirdbooks.com. You can also follow her on Twitter.

I also wanted to let you know that the Sneezy Wheezy Day e-book is available as a free download on Amazon through Saturday.

My Take on the Book
This was a fun book with a great story! The author did a great job at getting people connected to the characters and I can say that in reading this to my own daughters that this book was definitely one that they loved. Since my first reading they have asked over and over for this to be read again. Also, on top of this, I was so impressed with the illustrations as they just jumped off the page and they made the story even more interactive! This was a great story that I highly recommend!
Love, Dad

About the Book
"For What it’s Worth…Love, Dad: Things I always wanted to tell you, if only we’d had the time” (ISBN 1466499176), a collection of essays by Bruce Smith, is the author’s expression of love to his children in the form of short, touching memoirs and pithy life lessons.

Smith says that the most satisfying job he ever held is being a good father to his children – and that parenting doesn’t stop when our children leave home. In this often humorous and sometimes touching book he offers a tribute to the memories he shares with them and powerful examples of what it means to be a family. Addressing a broad range of themes including the fear felt when a family member is in danger, how to recognize and make right choices and the importance of trust, the book is full of anecdotes and common sense that any family can relate to.

“I began writing the book because I didn’t want my children to ever think we had left anything unsaid,” says Smith. “And ended up celebrating the life we’ve shared, giving them something to carry forward in life.”

The idea for the book came about when Smith’s grown daughter emailed him seeking marital advice. He wrote her back, offering what he hoped was sage advice and signed the email “For What it’s Worth, Love Dad,” which led him to think of many other trials his children might yet face and the tools they would need to deal with that adversity. The result is this collection. Written to engage, entertain and inspire, the book is aimed at children and parents of all backgrounds.

“For What it’s Worth…Love, Dad: Things I always wanted to tell you, if only we’d had the time” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.

About the Author:
Bruce Smith attended Glendale Community College. His experience includes engineering and finance. He also dabbles in oil painting and creates one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments for friends and family. Smith is an accomplished photographer and travels extensively as a disaster recovery specialist, assisting local governments that have been devastated by hurricanes and other natural disasters.

My Take on the Book
This was truly a heartfelt book that was full of great insights and thoughts that any parent should share with their child. The book also was so easy to read. I found that after I started the book I did not want to put it down and with it only being 102 pages the book flies by and before you know it, you are through the whole book craving even more. As a father I could relate to so much in this book. This is a must read for ALL fathers and even better, all parents!
Scooby-Doo is probably the world's best-known and most loved cartoon pooch. Scholastic's books are the #2 Scooby licensed product in the world!

Scooby and Shaggy are spending the summer as counselors at Camp Kichihaha. But -- zoinks! -- a horrible swamp creature is haunting the camp! Can the two buddies unmask the toxic terror before they get swallowed up in green goo?

This is the third in our new series of Scooby-Doo comic storybooks. It's perfect for Scooby fans who are just getting ready to read comic books.

My Take on the Book
This was a great addition to the Scooby Doo Stories! My girls love Scooby Doo and the whole gang and this story was no different, as it attracted their attention and made them want to read it again and again. What was different in this book was that it was set up like a comic book which brought out great illustrations and a more robust plot. All-in-all, any person who loves Scooby Doo will love this book!
More accurately, it looked at whether or not parents remembered their doctor’s sharing this. The study analyzed government surveys of almost 5,000 parents of overweight children, and found that less than 25% of the parents recalled the doctor ever saying there was a problem.

“Even though being overweight or obese is becoming common in America, it is not a normal condition and should be easily recognized by an untrained eye,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

“Being obese or overweight is widely known to come with significant health risks as well as potential negative emotional conditions,” says Tom. “Fat kids are often ostracized by their peers and this can continue into adulthood. The time to address the condition is as early as possible with the education and introduction of healthy eating and lifestyle choices. Overweight children often have overweight parents and siblings who make it seem normal or perhaps somehow genetic. This belief is wrong. Nobody is destined to be obese or overweight.”

“As individuals, parents, health care providers and a society facing escalating chronic disease and the associated healthcare costs, we all need to assume responsibility for the problem and work together at improving the situation,” adds Dian. “We all need to do everything we can to make the necessary choices which will deliver optimal health for ourselves and our children. Eliminating sugar and sweeteners along with refined and processed foods and replacing them with natural whole foods alone would make an enormous difference. In addition, not smoking and being more active would practically eliminate the incidence of most chronic diseases we experience today.”
The hotel opened in November 2011 and is the first TRYP by Wyndham hotel to Central America. Now through April 30, 2012, rates with daily breakfast included start as low as $109 per night – making no better time than the present to explore Costa Rica!

These rates are based on single and double occupancy and are subject to availability. Included in the rates are tax, full breakfast daily, wireless internet and local and international phone calls.

Incorporating TRYP by Wyndham’s commitment to help travelers “own the city,” this four-star, 98-room hotel is the perfect starting point for a day trip to Poas Volcano National Park, the largest, most active volcano in Costa Rica, or a white water rafting ride down the rapids of the Pacuare River. Because it is centrally located in the middle of the country, most tours leave from San José so it is easy to get to Costa Rica’s top attractions, including Limon, Guanacastle beaches and Manuel Antonio National Park.

TRYP San José Sabana is conveniently located just 20 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport and ten minutes from downtown San José.

The hotel is designed to accommodate every guest, and in addition to standard rooms, features oversized Family rooms with bunk beds for children and large, separate beds for adults, as well as the brand’s signature Fitness rooms, equipped with elliptical machine, treadmill or stationary bike.
Adding a child to a family is an important milestone in anyone’s life. For most mothers, bonding begins with the child from the moment a mother realizes she is pregnant. For most fathers, however, bonding usually doesn’t start until after the child is born. Elvin R. Freytes is trying to assist dads with the bonding process in his book, “Hello My Little One, It’s Me Your Father” (ISBN 146622410X).

Freytes has created a movement he has called MaJenDome (pronounced Ma-Jen-Dum) with the goal to get fathers more involved with the pregnancy experience and raising children. Written as a poem, the book for expectant fathers is to be read aloud to the child in the expectant mother’s womb. It allows the father to develop a strong bond with the mother and their unborn child.

The inspiring poem is written in the form of the father’s oath to the mother and his soon-to-be-born child. The father tells his child about the wonderful things they will do and learn together as the child grows. From teaching the child to walk and talk to knowing the difference between wrong and right and dealing with friendship and love, this book is designed for the father to tell the mother and the child that he will be there to provide support, guidance and care.

“I believe this is the first children’s book for an expectant father to read to his unborn child,” Freytes says. “My dream is to translate this book into every language to inspire expectant fathers all over the world to support the expectant mother and stay involved in their children’s lives from the very beginning.”

“Hello My Little One, It’s Me Your Father” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.

About the Author
Elvin R. Freytes is founder of the MaJenDome movement, which is dedicated to inspiring expectant fathers to read to their unborn child.

Website: http://MaJenDome.blogspot.com

My Take on the Book
Elvin R. Freytes had a vision in 2002. This vision was a child saying to him MaJenDome. In 2010 he decided to create this book for expectant fathers to read to their children in the womb. He hopes his poem will inspire expectant fathers to support expectant mothers and stay involved in their child's life.

This short poem tells of all the things a father can teach their child. Some of the phrases are:as you grow I will teach you to read, I will teach you the difference between right and wrong. At different intervals the poem repeats "I am your father and I love you."

This little book may be that perfect gift for the expectant father. So many times the emphasis is on the expectant mother with the baby showers and the gifts and the father is in the background. He just as important and needs to feel connected in the entire process. This little book could just be the inspiration for him to really feel a part of this whole process of a new life he has helped to create.

I encourage you to look at this book.
About the Book
Sam Learns Some Lessons is a touching tale about a young elephant who comes to his friend’s rescue. Published by the nonprofit organization Dot-to-Dot Children’s Books, the book is based on stories written by the Kisa Scholars during a creative writing workshop last year. Dot-to-Dot’s creative writing team selected favorite elements written during the workshop and combined them into a single story, making Sam Learns Some Lessons an expression of the collective creativity of the young women who helped write it.

However, the young elephant in Sam Learns Some Lessons is not the only hero whose story is told through this book. The Kisa Scholars who helped author the book are prominently featured in the book as role models for generations of youth around the world and AfricAid Founder Ashley Shuyler is profiled as “A Heroine and Leader.” The book also features information about AfricAid and facts about elephants and Tanzania.

My Take on the Book
This book is written by young women in Tanzania. The Africaid's Kisa Project provides them with educational scholarships , leadership training, and interaction with their sponsors in America.
The young women researched the information about elephants and then wrote stories with elephants as the main characters. This is one of them.

SAM LEARNS SOME LESSONS is a story about elephants who need to locate water to survive. Sam and his brother, Jamuu, travel to find Chuchu, the wise and oldest female elephant, who will help the herd locate water.Sam is young and often foolish, but in the end he learns not to be selfish in order to assist the herd in surviving the drought.

As you read the story, you will find information at the end of the book which includes facts about Tanzania, life in the villages, and the young women who were involved in writing this story. You will find contact information if you care to support the education and continued training of these young women. The purchase of this book will be used to further their advancement.
Can a small, slim book change your life? This one can! Pairing hilarious photos of children with beautifully simple words, I Just Can't Take It Anymore will cheer up even the most discouraged people. In a lighthearted yet profound way, Anthony DeStefano, author of the bestseller, A Travel Guide to Heaven, conveys the essence of the Judeo-Christian teaching on suffering, all the while making readers laugh out loud and sigh "Aww."

At once straightforward and funny and yet deeply moving, the book depicts challenges we all face: “Messy” lives, feelings of loss, abandonment, frustration, and despair. Then, step by step, DeStefano gently nudges readers into seeing the whole picture—life with all its beauties, joys, challenges and pleasures.

“Sometimes people just need to be reminded that there are always things to be grateful for. No one ever has to suffer alone,” said DeStefano, a best-selling author whose previous books include Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To, The Invisible World, and two award-winning children’s books, This Little Prayer of Mine and Little Star.

If you know anyone who can use some encouraging words or needs a reason to smile, I Just Can’t
Take It Anymore! offers plenty of both.

For more information about the author, visit www.AnthonyDeStefano.com.

My Take on the Book

Anthony DeStefano has written a brilliant book that will help you to identify with everyone in the human race and to help you not to feel alone in your challenges. He is relaying to the reader the message of hope and encouragement. He does this through faith and trust in God.

The expressive photographs of children in various situations is accompanied by truthful, lighthearted, and encouraging text. His message is clear. We need not despair when our faith is placed in God's plan for our life.

There are so many favorite pages , but I would like to share two: One is a photograph of a young child with binoculars looking up at the sky. The text reads "sometimes I wonder if God is really up there~ even worse ~ if He just does not care."

Another photo shows a little girl with a very sour expression on her face. Her friend is a chimpanzee who has his arm around her. The text reads "I seem to make a habit out of getting involved in the wrong relationships." The children's expressions and situations in the photographs lend to "smile factor" but do not deter from the message of hope and love of our God.

Do you have someone in your life who is facing some challenges and needs to have some laughter and encouragement in their life? If so this little book could be just the inspirational gift you could give which could lift their spirits and remind them that God loves them and is in their life.

Dirty Little Laundry Secrets from the Pros

It’s the chore that never ends! Get it done easier and faster with tips from our crew of washing and folding experts.

A sink for hand-washing: A two minute soak in the sink isn’t enough. You need to soak stains for at least 10-30 minutes to really make a difference.

Bins for sorting: Don’t just separate by color but also by material. You don’t want to wash fuzzy fabrics like chenille and flannel with corduroy or permanent-press items, which can be magnets for lint.

Countertops for folding: Don’t fold clothes hot right out of the dryer (we know – we all do it!). You can wind up with creases that are hard to get rid of.

A rod for hanging: A rod is hey for keeping shirts smooth and crease-free. Take collared shirts out of the dryer a few minutes before they’re dry to prevent the neck from stretching and the collar from getting floppy.

Did you know: You should clean the inside of your washing machine to keep it and your clothes smelling fresh? You can put the lint screen from the dryer in the dishwasher? Hot pink, bring green, and electric blue can bleed more than other colors in the washing machine? Using too much detergent can actually make your clothes dirtier.

3 stain busters to have on hand: Rubbing alcohol for ink. Raise armpit stain remover for getting out touch sweat stains. Blue dawn dish soap for grease.

When was the last time you cleaned…
Our experts reveal common household items that might be getting neglected in the cleanliness department. We share tips on how and when to clean your hair brushes, pillows, coffee makers, produce bins in your fridge, etc. – and the answers may surprise you!

Your hairbrush: Beauty experts recommend washing your hair brush every two months. First pull out all stray hairs with a comb. Fill a sink with warm water and a squirt of soap or mild shampoo, and soak your brush for 15 minutes. (If your brush has padding, boar bristles, or a wooden handle, swish it back and forth in the sink and then rinse to prevent the brush getting waterlogged.

The inside of your coffee machine: Clean your machine after every dozen brews. Insert a coffee filter and fill the reservoir with two parts white vinegar and one part water, and run the machine through one full cycle. Then, repeat the process twice with cold water and filters.

The produce bins in your fridge: Scrub your bins every few months to keep produce flavors fresh. Empty the drawers and remove them from the fridge. Dip a cloth in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda and 1 quart warm water, then wipe down the inside and outside of each bin. Avoid household cleaners, which can make food taste like chemicals. Be sure to rinse the bins in warm water before returning to the fridge.

By Ramin Manshadi, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FAHA, FACP
There is emerging awareness and concern today, as more women now die from coronary disease in this country each year than do men. In fact, when women show up with their first heart attack, 52 percent of them die from sudden cardiac death. Men, 42 percent. This is true even if women don’t have significant blockages in their vessels.

Some of the explanation behind this is that the disease has actually progressed further without a woman necessarily being aware of it. This is partly because women don’t seek out cardiology doctors as much as men do. Plus, when many doctors see female patients, even they don’t treat them as aggressively as they do men. They underutilize the American Heart Association guidelines for treating women, which at the moment are identical for both sexes.

Additionally, there are circumstances linked to heart problems that are unique to women. A recent study showed that the risk of a heart attack for a woman who’s had at least one stillbirth was 3.5 times higher than for women who’d had none. Those who have experienced more than three spontaneous miscarriages had a fivefold increase in their likelihood of having a heart attack.

Furthermore, like men, women are not immune to stress impacting their heart health. A recent 10-year Harvard study found that women with high-stress jobs had a 40 percent higher risk of having some kind of heart disease, along with an 88 percent higher likelihood of experiencing a heart attack.

Women’s predisposition toward heart disease is not only a new perception for many doctors, it also contradicts the expectations of most women, who are generally more concerned about cancer than heart disease. This is despite statistics that show for women, one out of every 2.6 deaths in the U.S. is due to heart disease, while one out of every 4.6 females that dies is because of cancer.

Women have Different Symptoms
Another aspect of the misperception that women are less prone to heart disease than men are the differences in how symptoms show up in women and men. Instead, women get “angina equivalent.” That can be pain in the upper back, fatigue, shortness of breath, or perfused sweating. It’s not as dramatic or clear. And not as well-known.

Additional Dissimilarities
Aside from the already described disparities between women and men in connection to heart disease, women are also distinctly different in terms of:

Microvascular Dysfunction

Plaque Erosion (and distill microembolization)

Abnormal Coronary Reactivity

Higher Cholesterol

Calcium Scores

CIMT Results

Framingham Risk Assessment Results

Response to Emotional Distress

Likelihood of Obesity

Vitamin D Deficiency

Let’s take a look at these areas in more detail.

Microvascular Dysfunction

When comparing effects of heart disease on men and women, we have to factor in that women probably have more microvascular dysfunction (sometimes called microvessel disease). It’s one reason that most women don’t exhibit the same warning signs as men – their symptoms and pain are microvascular.

What does this mean?

Heart disease may not necessarily involve a big blockage in a big artery. It can be blockages down in this microvascular system (micro means very small). These microvessels typically control blood supply to the heart tissue during times of high demand, such as exercise or stress. Blockages in these can cause ischemia (decreased oxygen and nutrients to tissue). If lasting long enough while demand is high, a heart attack can result.

This appears to be more of an issue for women than men. One explanation is that the variances in hormone levels throughout a woman’s life (changing during pregnancy to peripartum to menopause), all can raise the risk of more microvascular disease.

So women may not have big blockages in main arteries on top of the heart as much as they have tiny ones inside muscles and organs. These microvascular blockages actually create more symptoms, but doctors can’t figure out why the patient is having them. As a result, many women coming in with this problem will be told they’re not candidates for treatment. But if your doctor isn’t concerned about these symptoms that you bring in, you might bring this possible explanation to their attention.

Plaque Erosion
Fat in the artery is called plaque. It adheres to an artery wall, builds up and slowly erodes into the artery.

Women are more prone to erosion – meaning the plaque that has adhered and built up on the artery walls, eroding off into the bloodstream – creating likelihood that it will lodge somewhere to cause a blood clot and block the blood flow, causing a heart attack.

Another clot-forming tendency with women, aside from plaque erosion, is they may develop smaller clots on the surface of a large vessel, which then separate and flow through the blood to block smaller vessels further down.

Coronary Reactivity
Women can also have what we call abnormal coronary reactivity. It means their vessels react differently than normal under stress. They may not necessarily have a clot or blockage, but because of stress-related issues, they’re more prone to these arterial spasms that cause less blood flow to the heart and possibly chest pains. If severe enough and continuing long enough, these spasms can even cause a heart attack.

Higher Cholesterol
Women also tend to have higher cholesterol than men. Within that cholesterol, they also tend to have lower HDL (the good cholesterol). Additionally, high triglycerides tend to more negatively affect women in terms of causing blockages and heart attacks.

Calcium Score
When you get plaque inside your arteries, it can go under the vessel wall, build up, and become calcified. This is of concern.

Calcium scores vary from zero into the 1000s. Different levels predict the likelihood of developing heart disease over the next 10 years. It’s a good screening test, especially for patients who are borderline risks (like having a positive family history or being diabetic).

It is significant for women if they’re at high risk from the calcium score, as chances for them developing heart disease or heart attacks are consequently 10 percent more than for men.

CIMT
Another difference in women and men is their CIMT results. CIMT measures the thickening of the inside lining of the neck’s carotid artery that goes to the brain. Typically, if that result is normal, we measure the risk at only one percent. But if it turns out higher than what should be for someone of a certain age, the risk of having a blockage and a heart attack in the next 10 years will be much higher than if it was normal. That is generally true equally for men or women.

However, as the thickness increases, the risks are much higher in women than men.

Limits of the Framingham Risk Assessment
There is another reason why women may not be diagnosed as early with heart issues as men.

An evaluation referred to as the Framingham Risk Assessment is commonly used to compare variables such as age, sex, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure and whether you smoke. It’s designed to determine if you are at low or high risk for developing heart disease or attacks in the future. But it undercuts some of the biomarkers particular to women. This is especially significant, since if the score comes out relatively low, some doctors may not perform further screening tests.

A newer assessment, called Reynolds Risk Score, would be a better choice. This assessment is more male/female specific, and considers the following variables:

age

gender

systolic blood pressure

CRP

Total Cholesterol

HDL

Hemoglobin A1C (a marker for diabetes)

smoking

family history

Utilizing this formula, we’re better able to detect early heart disease in women.

Broken Heart
Not literally tha the heart is “broken.” But there is something referred to as “broken heart syndrome.” As you might imagine, it refers to an emotional sorrow.

It is most often used to describe the condition of an elderly woman with recent emotional distress who has a heart attack.

Everything looks like a heart attack, but there are absolutely no blockages. Yet it’s actually a heart attack. What probably occurred was that the heart wasn’t getting enough oxygen, but then in a few moments the heart goes back to normal. The muscle is acutely damaged, though not bad enough to last an extensive time.

So is there an emotional connection? Does “sadness in the heart” somehow affect it physically? Science is still searching for those answers.

Weighty Subject
Another factor more emphasized in women is weight. The obesity epidemic in this country appears to be striking women more than men. Two-thirds of the female population is obese. Obesity is a risk factor for developing heart disease (as well as diabetes).

Vitamin D Deficiency
It is commonly agreed there is a general deficiency of vitamin D in women today.
We know that vitamin D plays a significant role in healthy bones.

A recent study points to vitamin D deficiency in younger women possibly elevating risks of high blood pressure in mid-life. The pre-menopausal women in the study with this vitamin deficiency were three times more likely to have systolic hypertension 15 years later, when contrasted to others with normal vitamin D levels.

Women would be wise to get more vitamin D-producing sunshine, increase the amount of vitamin D-rich foods in their diets, or take supplements, consulting with their doctor as to appropriate amounts.

The myth that women are somehow more immune to coronary disease than men is clearly fading. Women need to be just as conscientious toward their health habits as do men, and similarly consult with a cardiologist when necessary. Their warning signs can be more diverse than the classic indicators, which means that in some cases, women may proactively need to “educate” their own doctors to current information.
Bestselling author Anthony DeStefano begins his creative telling of the beloved Bible story of Christ’s triumphant entry by introducing the young donkey who has yet to realize his important mission. The lowly creature believes he can do nothing noble, but that’s before he meets the Master...

Then Jesus said to the donkey,
“It’s time that you knew
About the great thing
That you’re destined to do...”
He hears the sad donkey cry,
“Just leave me alone and cast me aside.
I’m just a poor donkey that no one can ride.”

Richard Cowdrey’s colorful illustrations pair beautifully with Anthony’s charming rhymes. Together, they bring this timeless story of the donkey who carries Jesus into Jerusalem to a joyful finish. While especially appropriate as an Easter gift, this year-round story is for all time and for young and old alike.

My Take on the Book
Anthony DeStefano uses a favorite Bible story about Jesus's ride into Jerusalem. He introduces the reader to a young donkey who felt he could not accomplish anything . He was a donkey but no one could ride him. The donkey was weak and small . He could not haul stones or pull a cart.
Finally his owner sent him away and tied him to a post. The donkey was so very sad.
One day two men took the donkey to meet Jesus. Jesus told the donkey he was about to do a great thing and the donkey had faith he could perform the task of carrying Jesus into Jerusalem.

Faith is believing in God's love for us. So renew your hopes and remember that faith can give you strength to carry on when you may not think you can continue moving forward.

This is a beautiful story in well written poetic rhyme.

Richard Cowdrey created the illustrations. The detail he shows in the faces of the characters shows their emotions. You will feel the sadness and unbridled happiness of the donkey as he changed from the beginning to the end of the book. The human characters show the same intricate details.

I feel this book would be an excellent addition to a family's library at home or a gift to your church's Sunday school classes.
A meerkat family is on a round-the-world vacation trip, and kids who open this book are challenged to locate those roaming animals in a series of large, colorful, detail-packed street scenes. The meerkats' travels take them to Moscow's Red Square and New York's Times Square. The friendly but elusive creatures also show up in Venice at carnival time, at a floating farmer's market in Bangkok, Thailand, and at other colorful places that range from Paris to the Pyramids. Ten members of the meerkat family are cleverly hidden among crowds of people in every one of this book's bustling scenes. Kids will enjoy examining each two-page spread and seeking out all ten little animals. Boys and girls will also find checklists that challenge them to identify many other details in each of the book's big pictures. They'll find answers at the back of this fun-filled book.

My Take on the Book
If you recall the WHERE'S WALDO books of years ago and enjoyed the fun of locating Waldo in the various illustrated scenes , you will also enjoy this delightful hide and seek book with a family of Meerkats .

Jen Wainwright has written a story which takes the reader to various parts of the world. For example one location is New York's Time Square.Among the people on the crowded street, ten meerkats are blending nicely into the scene. Another location is Moscow, Russia, where we see a military parade in Red Square. The meerkats are quite illusive. Can you find them all there?
Jen educates her readers from the beginning to the end of the story. I know reading this book helped me to learn new facts.

The three illustrators did an excellent job integrating our sly meerkats into each scene. It was fun to see if I could locate them all without using the answers and checklist in the back of the book. My granddaughter thoroughly loved the adventure of finding the meerkats also.

This book will provide hours of entertainment for your family. I believe it would a nice book to give as a gift.
Delightful story leads children on hunt to find ‘the cookie thief’

The Cookie Thief by Connecticut child educator Frances Gilbert is a charming, simple and engaging story about a family who is hit by a cookie thief.

Thomas is visiting Granny’s house when he hears a patter, a swoop and a rush and oh no. “Cookie thief! Cookie thief,” Grandma shrieks.

Cookies are disappearing, the whole family is in a state of shock. There are no more cookies to be had. People take precautions and start hiding them, "No cookie thief is getting my cookies!" they say. Even the animals are put to work and placed on guard. There are no more cookies to be found anywhere.

Thomas' wise grown up friend Kristina helps him make a plan to track down the cookie thief.

He looks everywhere. Who could it be? Will he find the cookie thief?

Colorful, detailed pictures lead young readers through the story. This is a wonderful read aloud book. Parents, grandparents and teachers will appreciate the simple lesson.

About the Author

Frances Gilbert was born in London and emigrated to the US where she became a special educator. Frances has worked with young children for over thirty years. Her interest in emerging reading and language led her to a writing career. Frances is a strong believer in the reading experience as a vital precursor to literacy for young children; she writes to be read aloud. She says rhythm binds language, language binds emotion and emotion binds meaning. Her stories quickly become favorites, read and enjoyed over and over again. Frances lives in Connecticut where she enjoys reading and playing word games with her six grandchildren. She loves old houses and gardens and her ambition is to own a sheep farm. She lives in Trumbull, CT.

Ben Quesnel is an artist and illustrator who is currently working as a part time elementary art teacher in the southern part of Connecticut. Ben recently graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Art Education. He lives in Stamford, CT.

My Take on the Book
Frances Gilbert has written such a cute story for you and your child to enjoy.

So who does not like cookies? What is your favorite cookie and how would you feel if someone stole all your cookies?

Thomas always seems present when the cookies disappear. Finally Kristina, Thomas's friend, has a plan to catch the cookie thief.

At first Thomas is willing to go along with the plan, but as soon as Kristina tells her brother they will hide behind the couch, Thomas is reluctant to help out. Can you guess why? What do you think is behind the couch?

I encourage you to read this story with your favorite child and then prepare a favorite cookie recipe with him or her.
We’re all guilty of it. It’s easy to get obsessed with our laptops, video games, iPods and smartphones. But Casey Rislov says family time creates stronger relationships and bonds. In her new children’s book, Time Together, Time Well Spent!, Rislov encourages today’s family to get outside and for good old fashioned quality time.

“We did a lot as a family growing up,” says Rislov. “These are very fond memories as we found different activities to do together like water skiing, camping and boating. Games always brought a competitive or silly side to everyone.”

Time Together, Time Well Spent! encourages family members to spend more time together in order to stay close and emotionally connected. The time will allow children and their parents to bond in a way that’s meaningful and lasting.

“I cherish all the time I do spend with my friends and family,” Rislov says. “I love taking the time to talk over a good meal, go on an outdoor adventure, play a game or just make them smile.”

Rislov says, after reading Time Together, Time Well Spent!, children will understand that family time is filled with amazing adventures. And, the book is a helpful guide that shows families how to start conversations with children to teach them family time is central to their development and maturity.

Time Together, Time Well Spent! shows modern families that ditching technology for a period of time in exchange for traditional ways of having fun is important when it comes to keeping a family close.

About the author

Casey Rislov’s passion has always been with children. In her early teenage years, she began teaching swimming lessons. During her late college years, Rislov began assistant coaching swimming and downhill skiing. Eventually, she moved into the classroom to teach both elementary and preschool. Rislov’s most recent career has been in early childhood special education. She received her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Montana State University. Rislov found a renewed sense of love for children's books as soon as she entered the classroom. She and her family live in Casper, Wyoming.

My Take on the Book
Casey Rislov had written an enchanting story about a bear family and the many ways they spend time together.

For so many families it may be difficult to find time to play together due to schedules of work, school, etc. .This book shows that there are so many activities that you can plan. Some are short term and some may take longer, but time spent together is time very well spent.

Some of the activities the bear family enjoys are: watching a movie with popcorn, playing cards, dancing to music, reading books and discussing them, playing ball, pretending, making forts in the house, etc. This is actually a good springboard to discuss all the ways you and your children enjoy each other's company. You could write your own story!

Have you and your family members connected recently in a enjoyable activity that brought smiles and laughter, learning or maybe discovering something new? You can make every minute count and create memories that can last a life time. Begin today!
Written in collaboration with Rokhshana Girls' School Students, Afghanistan

Under blue skies dotted by clouds in a remote region, a young girl overcomes her fears and befriends a snow leopard.

This book is not only a story about the Snow Leopard and a young girl in Afghanistan, but a testimony to the courage these young women have in pursuing their education in their war ridden country. It truly a work of art and the story is beautiful.

The young women are supported by nonprofit organizations within their country and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The women researched the Snow Leopard. It is an endangered species. They wrote a tale about a young girl and her father. The young girl saved the Snow Leopard's life and in turn the Snow Leopard saved the girl and her father later in the story.

You will not only learn about the Snow Leopard, but also Afghanistan, the young authors, and the organization which supports these young women.

I see this book as an excellent resource for parents. I encourage you to purchase it as a family book. Our children live in a global world and learning about other cultures will help them to become a good citizens of the world. Consider this a gift you will enjoy sharing many times with not only your immediate family, but with other relatives and friends.
