Every once in a while, I like to step back and let the readers of this blog into my mind. I know it can be a very scary place, but I’ll do my best to keep the lights on and keep this trip shorter than usual! Relax, this is not another retrospective on this blog or a grand announcement of where we’re heading, but I did take some time during my Dark Week to reflect on blogging – what I do – and why I do it.

I have always said, and still do, that I blog principally as a means of processing my own thoughts and recording my own walk with Jesus. I find that writing things out helps me to process them in a way that nothing else does. However, something strange happened along the way, a God thing if you will, people started to read what I was writing and give feedback on the site. You can imagine my surprise! Suddenly, I felt God calling me (tugging me really) in a whole new direction to share my thoughts and experiences through blogging and allow him to use it to edify others. I try not to say “No” to God as much as possible, so I went ahead writing and trusted Him to use it however he wished.

Through blogging though, and other online endeavors, I’ve met a slew of wonderful people who work in kidmin. Not the least of those was Tony Kummer from Ministry-to-Children.com. Ministry-to-Children.com quickly became one of my favorite sites, and I was flabbergasted when Tony asked me to start writing for his site several months back. Given that Tony’s site would allow me to reach more people with the thoughts and ideas that God was laying on my heart, I quickly accepted and have published a number of articles on that site over the last several months.

Then, about 3 months ago, I got another idea – some might call it a wild hair, but I really felt like it was something else God was leading me to do. The more I talked to people online, the more I found out that many of those I had assumed were in full-time ministry were actually, like myself, either volunteers or working in a bi-vocational capacity. It seemed like that perspective was missing in the Kidmin blogging world, and so Kidmin1124.com was formed and launched on June 15th of this year. In the beginning, it was a collaborative effort of a core of four writers. We have since grown to ten writers. I am proud of the group we have assembled over there (in a “proud my God brought us all together” kind of way), and I am excited about the future and possibility for that site.

So, what does any of this have to do with Dad in the Middle? In recent weeks, I have felt a bit like the Church of Ephesus having forsaken my first love – that being Dad in the Middle in this case. I have invested countless hours in the launch and growth of Kidmin1124, and I have written what I have been told are some fairly good articles for Ministry-to-Children. In fact, I feel like over the last several months I have pushed some of the meatier stuff either to Kidmin1124 because it deals with issues relevant to volunteers or Ministry-to-Children because I feel like it has a wider readership and the articles will be more impactful there. That has, sadly, left Dad in the Middle relegated to my third choice for publishing articles. I don’t think what has been published here has been altogether bad, but I just feel like it has suffered.

So what? You ask, or don’t, I’m still going to tell you. Why I am sharing any of this? Well, because I needed an article for Wednesday of course! Just kidding. I am sharing because things are going to look a little bit different around here for the next couple or few weeks. I am going to focus on linking you to some of the articles I have published elsewhere which I think may be beneficial to our readers here. That sounded good didn’t it? I’m actually doing it because I have fallen woefully behind in posting those articles, and I have something in the hopper that I want to focus some attention on. There will be some articles mixed in along the way (the normal Monday Morning Prophecy, Saturday video, etc.) and next Tuesday is the day for the August installment of The Children’s Ministry Blog Patrol, but largely I will not be publishing new stuff on this site. I am excited about this new series and feel like it is something that needs to be written. So, when I come back to regular posting you can expect a ten / eleven part series which may just ruffle a few feathers. The idea has been percolating in my head for months now, and the need was made clear to me in a conversation with a friend at the CM Expo back in July. Maybe Tony will let me do a summary of it over on Ministry-to-Children once it’s all published.

Following that, my pledge is to spread the dearth (opposite of spreading the wealth) between all three sites. Let’s face it – I have a lot to say! I’ll leave it to all of you to figure out whether or not it’s worth reading…

We begin Spotlight on our Sponsors with Christianity Cove. Rather than wax eloquently on my own (right!), I decided to ask Mary-Kate Warner some questions about the site to give us a better idea what they are all about. Here is the transcript of that interview:

What is the name of your site?

Christianity Cove (http://www.christianitycove.com/)

What does your site offer to those in kidmin?

Christianity Cove is an online resource for children’s ministry leaders, Sunday School teachers, and home schooling parents. You’ll find hundreds of pages of free content including lessons, games, crafts, activities, and much more. In addition to our free content, Christianity Cove sells a number of “turn-key” Children’s Ministry & Sunday School resources including: Lesson Plans, Bible Games, Children’s Sermons, and VBS Programs.

Why did you decide to start this site?

There are five “Children’s Ministry Moms” behind the scenes at Christianity Cove. We all stopped working full time when we had our children and became very involved in kidmin programs. The blog is our hobby and creative outlet (we usually post when the big kids are at school and the little ones are napping). We enjoy sharing what’s worked in our children’s ministry programs/ Sunday school classes with each other and others like us all over the world.

How long has the site been around?

We started the blog back in December of 2006.

What is your experience in kidmin?

All 5 of the “Christianity Cove Moms” have been very involved in children’s ministry programs since our children were little (our kids range in age from 4 months to 14 years). From Christian home schooling to Sunday School teaching to Children’s Ministry Directing to Children’s Pastoring we’ve pretty much got all the bases covered.

Anything else you want to tell us?

We’d love from readers to stop in for a visit at Christianity Cove Grab a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and click around when you need to be inspired with some new kidmin ideas. We also have a free Children’s Ministry newsletter (link: http://www.christianitycove.com/vid/dim.html) that many folks really enjoy (we send out fun ideas that worked well in our kidmin programs).

If you could share just one piece of advice to someone just entering children’s ministry, what would it be?

Don’t worry about being “perfect”! Try to bring a little FUN into the children’s day- get them up and moving, make a mess, sing a song really loud, etc. If something doesn’t go exactly as you had planned, just think of it as a learning experience for next time. Looking back, we were all too hard on ourselves during our first year in children’s ministry. So, our biggest advice would be to relax, have fun, and care about the kids. We actually just wrote an article about this very topic: http://www.christianitycove.com/sunday-school-teaching-what-caring-about-your-students-really-means/

Why did you decide to advertise on Dad in the Middle?

We were looking to get the word out about our blog and we felt that many of the “Dad in the Middle” readers would also enjoy our posts.

Thank you so much to Mary Kate Warner for telling us about her site. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I have put my feet up and explored Christianity Cove. The wealth of information there is amazing, and I am glad that they are one of our sponsors. I hope that you will check them out as well! If you do, please leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Introduction

The prophecies of the Old Testament indicate that the Messiah would be called Lord. While this may seem like a given to us today, the Old Testament leaves no doubt about the title of the coming Messiah.

Old Testament Prophecy

The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.” [Psalm 110:1 NIV]

New Testament Fulfillment

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” [Matthew 22:41-45 NIV]

David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. ’ [Mark 12:36 NIV]

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. [Luke 2:11 NIV]

This is the second summer that I did “Go Dark” week and the experience, though similar in many respects, also was markedly different. I suppose first though I should start by confessing my shortcomings.

Late Saturday Night my wife needed help with work she does for the High School Sports program. They were having a meeting Sunday afternoon, and she needed the accounts reconciled before then. I had planned for everything I needed to do, but I didn’t plan for what my wife needed. I had to turn my computer on for about a hour to help her with that.

There was one day where I was expecting a personal e-mail, and I ended up checking my e-mail more often than I had laid out in my original plan.

I didn’t remember what I said in my rules about text messaging, and frankly I haven’t gone back and looked. I did send a handful of messages to my wife by text message during the week.

There, I feel better now having admitted that. So, what did I do with my Dark Week? I read! I read a lot. Just for fun, here are the books I read:

Blue Like Jazz…Donald Miller

Parenting Beyond Your Capacity…Reggie Joiner & Carey Nieuwhof

To the Rising Generation: Addresses Given to Children and Young Adults…Jonathan Edwards

Turning Your Child’s Failures Into Success…Jim Wideman

The Ultimate Children’s Ministry Survival Guide…Ivy Beckwith

The Kidology Handbook…Karl Bastian (started)

Created to Learn…William Yount (started)

Rock Solid Teacher…Gregory C. Carlson (started)

Morning & Evening…C.H. Spurgeon – I did a lot of catching up in this one. It’s a daily devotional. I was doing well at the beginning of the year, but I fell behind and stopped reading sometime in May. I got all but a couple of week caught up.

I did a lot of additional reading I had printed out – research, curriculum, etc. and caught up on some back issues of magazines I hadn’t read.

In addition to all that, I got a couple of months of lesson plans for Sunday morning at least preliminarily mapped out. I got a lot of praying done too. It’s amazing how easy it is to find time to talk to God without all the distractions and noise.

So, I mentioned that it was a lot different this year too. Last year I was a little worried about whether or not I could stick to the plan. This year I was really looking forward to the week as a means of winding down. It wasn’t nearly as “hard” this year, but I think that had a lot do with knowing that I could get through it and knowing the benefits of unplugging. By Friday night, I was ready to plug back in, but when I did I realized that it had definitely lost its pull. I actually considered going two weeks this summer.

Anyhow, it was definitely a worthwhile week and something that I am planning on doing again next summer. I know of a couple of people who were talking about going along with Go Dark week this summer. If you did, leave a comment below and let us know how it went!

This week, as I was reflecting on those things, my mind started to wander to the book of Judges. Now I have never stabbed a fat monarch through with a knife, killed 600 people with an ox goad, or driven a stake through a sleeping man’s head. I haven’t attacked an army of men with only torches and trumpets. I’ve never promised to sacrifice my daughter in exchange for a victory in battle. I don’t have long hair, and I’ve never chopped anything into 50 pieces and sent them as gifts to every state in the union. That said, there is one verse that really resonates with me and my life from the Book of Judges (two verses really, but they say exactly the same thing). Judges 17:6 and Judges 21:25 both read:

In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

The pattern followed by the Israelites through the book Judges is pretty pronounced. They would go their own way and do their own thing until things got so bad that they cried out to God. At that time, God would have mercy on them and save them – more often than not through the most unexpected means. They would follow God for a while, but as the memory of the God’s prior acts of graciousness faded, the Israelites would fall back into the pattern of doing “what was right in their own eyes.”

I find that I follow this own roadmap in my own spiritual journey. Now, I don’t generally devolve into immorality but the pattern is very similar. I struggle with placing myself fully in the hands of God. I work, and I prepare, and I plan, and I try my hardest to accomplish the goals I have for myself in my life. When that doesn’t work, I reach a point where I realize that I need to give it over to God. My prayer life gets more intense, and I “feel” closer to God. He is faithful in answering those prayers, and my spiritual journey feels like I am on a mountaintop. Like the Israelites though, as time passes and I get more comfortable with how things are going in life, I find myself drifting back to “doing what is right in my own eyes.” In my life that is trying to fix things myself and relying on my own efforts rather than relying on God. After a while, something happens that reinvigorates my relationship with God (usually some sort of trial). I start praying more fervently once again and relying of God. As I reflect back on my life with Christ over the last several of years, I see this pattern more often than I would like to admit.

My birthday prayer this year is that God would help me to rely on him more entirely and fully upon his provision and his grace. I pray that he would help me to be more consistent in my relationship with him. Mostly, though, I thank God for his grace and mercy. No matter how much my devotion and consistency ebbs and flows, he is always faithful. His love for me never changes, and he continues to rain down grace in my life. Thank you God…for another year…for another day….for another minute….for another breath!

This year, I have been reading through Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotional. Well, I’ve gotten a little bit behind, and I am busy “catching up.” This morning, I was reading the evening devotional for July 11 and found a rather startling entry based on the verse in Joel 1:3 which reads, “Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.”

Spurgeon wrote:

In this simple way, by God’s grace, a living testimony for truth is always to be kept alive in the land—the beloved of the Lord are to hand down their witness for the gospel, and the covenant to their heirs, and these again to their next descendants. This is our first duty, we are to begin at the family hearth: he is a bad preacher who does not commence his ministry at home. The heathen are to be sought by all means, and the highways and hedges are to be searched, but home has a prior claim, and woe unto those who reverse the order of the Lord’s arrangements. To teach our children is a personal duty; we cannot delegate it to Sunday school teachers, or other friendly aids; these can assist us, but cannot deliver us from the sacred obligation; proxies and sponsors are wicked devices in this case: mothers and fathers must, like Abraham, command their households in the fear of God, and talk with their offspring concerning the wondrous works of the Most High. Parental teaching is a natural duty—who so fit to look to the child’s well-being as those who are the authors of his actual being? To neglect the instruction of our offspring is worse than brutish. Family religion is necessary for the nation, for the family itself, and for the church of God. By a thousand plots Popery is covertly advancing in our land, and one of the most effectual means for resisting its inroads is left almost neglected, namely, the instruction of children in the faith. Would that parents would awaken to a sense of the importance of this matter. It is a pleasant duty to talk of Jesus to our sons and daughters, and the more so because it has often proved to be an accepted work, for God has saved the children through the parents’ prayers and admonitions. May every house into which this volume shall come honour the Lord and receive his smile.

Why is this entry startling? Spurgeon originally published this devotional in Evening by Evening in 1868 over 140 years ago. It seems that the recent push towards “family ministry” and recapturing the home as the center of child’s spiritual development is not such a new idea after all. Nearly 150 years ago, Spurgeon identified parents abdicating their role as the spiritual guides of their kids as fundamental “for the nation, for the family itself, and for the church of God.” As parents, we would do well to remember Spurgeon’s admonition that:

He is a bad preacher who does not commence his ministry at home.

So, has anyone else tried this? What worked? What didn’t? The games aren’t until January, and I’m already excited about it! I plan to share my thoughts, ideas and questions as I move forward in planning these events. If you have any advice, I would love to hear it.

Introduction

The Old Testament is clear that the coming Messiah would fill a number of roles. One of those roles was that the Messiah would bring Israel back to God.

Old Testament Prophecy

And now the LORD says-
he who formed me in the womb to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
and gather Israel to himself,
for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD
and my God has been my strength- [Isaiah 49:5 NIV]

he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.” [Isaiah 49:6 NIV]

New Testament Fulfillment

You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. [Acts 10:36 NIV]

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ [Matthew 10:5-7 NIV]

He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” [Matthew 15:24 NIV]

God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. [Acts 5:31 NIV]

“From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. [Acts 13:23 NIV]

Well, today is officially my 500th post on Dad in the Middle, and it seemed like an appropriate time to take a stroll down memory lane, and what better way to do that than by hosting the official Dad in the Middle Awards show. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our not-so-esteemed host….Me. So, let’s get started by category:

1. The award for Oldest post on Dad in the Middle goes to What Does God Hate?

You heard right. My very first post was about hate. Even more it was about things God hates – not a very popular topic in our “God is Love” culture. Originally published on Facebook on 7/28/2008, this post was inspired Proverbs 6:16-19.

2. The award for post with the greatest number of hits goes to Who Made God? (Questions Kids Ask).

The very first installment in the Questions Kids Ask series, this post has gotten more hits than anything else I have written to date.

3. The award for best take off on an annoying Facebook trend goes to 25 NOT SO Random Things About Me.

First runner up in the category of most popular post, and poised to step in should Who Made God? (Questions Kids Ask) not be able to fulfill it’s responsibilities is this little post I wrote back in April 2009. Inspired by the “25 Random Things About Me” craze that was going around Facebook at the time, this post is much less random in nature.

4. The award for article that really kicked off this blog goes to Nightline Debate – Is Satan Real?.

Between July 2008 and the publishing of this article, I wrote a grand total of 15 of the 500 total posts. This post marked the beginning of the remaining 485 posts from April 2009 through today. I did the math, that 485 posts in 510 days in case you’re counting. It’s a good thing this is Go Dark week! I need a break.

5. The award for best idea that turned into a ridiculous amount of work goes to The Children’s Ministry Blog Patrol.

When I started the Blog Patrol on April 7, 2009, it was a weekly feature and did not focus entirely on Children’s Ministry. That changed in July 2009 when the Blog Patrol went to a monthly format and narrowed its focus to Children’s Ministry. Each month, this post contains upwards of 100-200 posts from around the kidmin blogging world. It serves as a great resource for me to find my way back to useful articles, but it does consume quite a bit of time. Every time I think about ditching this monthly feature, someone tells me how useful they find it.

6. The award for most creative thing I ever posted is a tie between Someday and 50 Word Gospel.

Someday is actually a poem I wrote during last year’s Go Dark Week. The 50 Word Gospel was in response to a challenge from the Kid Tech blog. That was about as creative as things have been since Dad in the Middle started.

7. The award for my favorite “how to” post goes to 30 Ways to Get Connected with Your Kids.

This was actually one of my first posts on the work I was doing in Children’s Ministry. It got a great response, and is still one of my favorites.

8. The award for the post with the most significant impact on Dad in the Middle goes to 8 Questions to Determine How Proud You Are.

It wasn’t the post itself that was do significant, but a link to the site. David Wakerley from Kid Inspiration posted an article linking to my original article. In that post, he poked fun at the current name of the blog – Wayne’s Random Thoughts. That prompted me to come up with something else, and Dad in the Middle was born. I wasn’t entirely happy with the name at the time, but it’s stuck and there’s no looking back now.

9. The award for the most out of ordinary post goes to A Christmas Carol Advent.

This was actually a series and not an individual post. I decided to take a break from my normal posts and spend the 25 days in December leading up to Christmas analyzing and examining a variety of Christmas Carols. I had a lot of fun doing this series.

10. Our final award – for favorite exposition of a Biblical passage goes to 8 Reasons to Get Involved in Children’s Ministry from Psalm 78.

I love working with kids, and I really enjoyed expositing Psalm for the blog.

There you have. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for joining us for the 500th post. I hope you will come back for many more!

My wife and I have four kids – four very different kids ranging in age from 3 all the way up to 17. We know enough, and we have been through enough, to know that we don’t know it all when it comes to being parents. That said, we have had enough experience at this point, that we are not often phased by the things that they do – sometimes surprised, but not often phased. That is, until last Saturday afternoon. On what was an otherwise normal Saturday afternoon, for a brief period of time, my wife and I experienced a paralyzing fear that only parents can relate to.

We were preparing for a family outing to go to dinner with my niece and nephew and their kids for the fourth birthday of my great-nephew. We had a fairly lazy stay-at-home Saturday morning and afternoon following a hectic week of VBS at church, so we all needed to shower and get ready to head to dinner. My wife had finished her shower and was getting ready, then I hopped into the shower to get ready myself. As I headed down the stairs to put my shoes on and head out the door to go to dinner, that’s when it all started. I started through my pre-leaving mental checklist (yes, I’m a list person):

Is Lyndsey (my seven year old) ready? Check.

Has Jacob brushed his teach (he’s a nine-year-old boy and proper dental hygiene is not high on his list of priorities)? Check.

Is Nathan dressed and ready to go?

…What?

…Where is Nathan?

…I thought he was with you.

…No, you were going to get him dressed!

Up until this point, this was a fairly routine exchange in my house. It’s true what they say about younger kids in your family. By the time you get to number four, you tend to be a lot less over-protective, and a constant line of sight to your kids is no longer considered a necessity. But, this day things took a turn for the worse. We began to yell for Nathan, but there was no answer. For the first couple of minutes, I was pretty sure that he was just playing with us, but like most three-year-olds, he doesn’t generally stay hidden for long. So, after a few minutes of no response, I started to worry a little bit. The next 20 minutes I can only describe as pure unadulterated terror. As a parent, I can’t imagine anything more terrifying than losing your child. Possibilities start to swirl around your head, and any one of them would spark enough nightmares for a lifetime. On top of all that, I had just read an article the prior day about a little boy who wandered from his home and found dead a couple of days later less than a mile from his house. After about 15-20 minutes of me searching every inch of the house and my wife, kids and neighbors search franticly outside, I ran to the basement to look around one more time. By this time I was convinced that, if Nathan was in the house, he most definitely hurt and couldn’t call back. And, if it gives you some context, that was the best case scenario in my head. As I started to move boxes and search through the storage area yelling, I heard a faint sound. What was that?!? Did I really hear something, or was my head playing tricks on me? Then I heard it again:

Here I am Daddy.

Sweeter words have never been heard. It turns out that Nathan had decided to hide because he thought he was going to be in trouble for not getting ready when he was told, and let me tell you that for a three year old he hid pretty well.

After all the ruckus died down, I started to reflect on the whole incident a little bit. I realized that as fearful and helpless as I felt in those moments, God was always in control. As Nathan’s earthly father, I do all I can to protect, but ultimately his fate rests entirely in the hands of his heavenly father. Leave it to God to take something that nearly ripped my heart from my chest and use it to teach me something about my own spiritual journey. You know what? That’s one of the things I love about my heavenly father.

I plan on writing more about my observations next week when I turn the computer back on. Last year I posted a single post the Friday before Go Dark week and left up all week. This year, I had some article I wanted to share, so I went ahead and wrote them ahead of time and scheduled them for this week. Plus, Friday marks my 500th blog post here on Dad in the Middle, and that just seemed like something I should acknowledge. That means that, even though you’re seeing new content each day, I actually haven’t visited this site in several days by the time you read this. And, check back Friday for a very special episode of Blossom…errr Dad in the Middle.

So, in the words of Simon and Garfunkel:

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again.

Introduction

Last week, we looked at the prophecy that God’s temple would become a den of robbers. The Old Testament also prophesied that the Messiah would be consumed with zeal for God’s temple.

Old Testament Prophecy

for zeal for your house consumes me,
and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. [Psalm 69:9 NIV]

New Testament Fulfillment

Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. [Matthew 21:12 NIV]

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!” His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” [John 2:13-17 NIV]
