Intermission Riff / Sing Sing Sing - The Bernie Lowe Orchestra

Hi friends! It's been a while, but I have recently found some things in the archives that I had not posted yet, so here we go with a couple from The Bernie Lowe Orchestra.
I love Intermission Riff. I am surprised how good this Cameo Records 45 sounds considering how much I played it when I was a kid. The song was first recorded by Stan Kenton and was composed by trumpeter, Ray Wetzel, but I love this version with the snazzy organ arrangements.

On the B side, we have the Louis Prima classic, "Sing Sing Sing," which is given a bit of an Afro-Cuban flavor in this 1958 rendition.

Al Casey - Doin' The Shotish

Back in January of 2011, when I started this blog, I posted THIS little number by legendary session guitarist, Al Casey.
The flipside has the same sound in terms of instrumentation, but is a bit more uptempo with a great organ leads dueling with the axe and sax. A shotish (or schottische) is a polka-type dance by the way.

Bill Doggett - Ram-Bunk-Shush

Ram-Bunk-Shush is the A-side to Blue Largo and was released on King Records in January of 1957. The song was written by Lucky Millinder, and was released first in 1952. Doggett’s version, thanks largely to Clifford Scott’s honking lead sax, made both the pop and R&B charts, peaking at #10 on the R&B. Ram-Bunk-Shush was also released by surf group The Ventures in ’61.

The Checkers - Don't Stop Dan

The Checkers were an offshoot of The popular R&B group, The Dominoes. This song, recorded in 1954 features the bass vocals of Bill Brown who sang the lead on The Dominoes' song "Sixty Minute Man" in 1951
"Dont Stop Dan" was written by Henry Glover.

Hutch Davie - Honky Tonk Train

Here is the other side of the Hutch Davie, ATCO 45 from 1958.
This song was written by American pianist and composer, Meade Lux Lewis in the 1920s.
My favorite version of this number was recorded by the late, great Keith Emerson and is featured on the ELP album, Works Volume 2.

George Wright - "Quiet Village/The Petite Waltz"

"Quiet Village" is an orchestral pop instrumental that was written and originally performed by Les Baxter in 1951.
"The Petite Waltz" was written by pianist, Joe Heyne around 1949-50

SERGIO MENDES & BRAZIL '66 - Night And Day

Mom and dad both loved music, although their tastes were somewhat different from each other. Mom liked classical music, folk and pop music, while dad enjoyed RnB, Jazz and rock selections.

Occasionally, mom would get a record of things she particularly liked. In this case the 45 was bought to help my mom learn to sing a song for some sort of talent event they had at our local church at the time. She sang the A side, The Look Of Love and she sang it pretty well.

Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 had hits with their sound that bridged latin jazz/bossa nova with contemporary pop music.

I preferred the flip side that featured a great version of the Cole Porter standard, Night And Day. Let's hear it now.

Here is another gem from The Treniers.

Hadacol was a patent medicine marketed as a vitamin supplement. Its principal attraction, however, was that it contained 12 percent alcohol (listed on the tonic bottle's label as a "preservative"), which made it quite popular in the dry counties of the southern United States.

Hadacol was the product of four-term Louisiana State Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc, a Democrat from Abbeville in Vermilion Parish in southwestern Louisiana. He was not a medical doctor, nor a registered pharmacist, but had a strong talent for self-promotion. Time magazine once described him as "a stem-winding salesman who knows every razzle-dazzle switch in the pitchman's trade".

Most of dad's old records are in playable condition, but there are a few that have been damaged over the years. I have used other sources when presenting these at times, but there are some songs that are just hard to find. This is one of those 45s that at some point was left out in a spot where it was hit by sunlight and it's edge warped. I have done my best to work with this issue and have founds some tricks that helped me get a decent transfer from the damaged disc.

The CUB label was a subsidiary of MGM and was started in 1958 for rhythm & blues recordings. The label's last release was in 1968.

Noble "Thin Man" Watts and his Rhythm Sparks cut this single for CUB in 1960.

Milt Buckner - "Two Flights Up"

Back in May of 2011, I posted the other side of this record by the late, great Milt Buckner.

One of the fathers of the funky organ sound and one of the inspirations for George Shearing's "locked hands" style of playing. Buckner played with McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the 1930s, then spent most of the 1940s with Lionel Hampton's big band. He struck out on his own, leading an unsuccessful big band that folded in 1949. He rejoined Hamp briefly, then left again to lead a trio. He recorded several classic albums for Capitol in the mid-1950s. Buckner pioneered the use of the electric organ as a substitute for a brass section, which proved an effective economy measure as the big band era ended. He began touring in Europe in the early 1960s, and gradually shifted most of his appearances there. In the early 1970s, he teamed with another Hampton alumnus, tenor sax man Illinois Jacquet, and they recorded a number of albums for European labels.
