If you are about to enroll or conduct your Ph.D. research, you could be one of the new generation of rice scientists with a 2011 Global Rice Science Scholarship (2011 GRiSS).

The 2011 GRiSS offers young agricultural scientists the opportunity to be experts in a scientific discipline and to have a broader understanding of the global issues that affect rice science for development.

This is a tremendous opportunity for scientists early in their career who are working in a national agricultural research and extension system in developing countries.

The Global Rice Science Partnership
The Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) is a single strategic goal and work plan for global rice research.
GRiSP streamlines current research for development activities of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). GRISP aligns these initiatives with numerous partners and adds new research activities to which science can make significant contributions.
This partnership also builds the capacity of the next generation of rice scientists. Partners are advanced research institutions and universities; national research, education, and extension systems; international and regional fora and development organizations; CGIAR centers; emerging national research systems; the private sector; and civil society organizations.

Information for Prospective Scholars for 2011

How does the Scheme work?

Awards are for taught postgraduate courses only. All courses undertaken must be demonstrably relevant to the

economic, social or technological development of the candidate's home country.

Awards are only available at participating institutions in the UK. The booklet giving details of the UK institutions offering Scholarships joint-funded with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in 2011 is available below for download or can be obtained in print copy from the Scheme Administrators (see below).

Please note that participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK Government). The Commission funds the cost of tuition fees (at overseas rate), return airfares and other allowances.

Who is eligible?

Applicants should:

a. be nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a Commonwealth developing country, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country (please see the booklet for a list of eligible countries)
b. hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level;
c . be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
d. have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
e. not be employed by a government department (for this purpose the Commission counts this as being employed by a Government Ministry).
f. be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
g. be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

How can I apply?

All enquiries should be addressed to the University at which you wish to study and through which you should therefore apply for a Scholarship, and not to the Commission. They will advise you on eligibility issues and on how to make an application direct to them. There are two options for this:

Option 1

Most universities will handle advertising and recruitment directly using their own application form and applications should therefore be made to the participating university direct. Following the university's closing date, the university will ask the candidates it selects to complete the CSC's application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS). Candidates should note that they must complete the EAS by the 17 May 2011 at the latest in order to be nominated to the Commission by their host university.

Option 2

Some universities want all candidates for their Shared Scholarship courses to apply via the Commission's Electronic Application System (EAS). You will be advised by the institution if this is the case and should then access the EAS once it is available for Shared Scholarships from the 19 November 2010 - applications must be submitted in time to meet the institution's own deadline which will be made clear in the EAS and is listed in the Booklet (where institutions have not specified a closing date candidates should contact the institution so as to ascertain the latest date that the institution is willing to accept applications).

All institutions are asked to forward their nominations to the CSC no later than 31 May 2011 using the EAS.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDY IN AUSTRALIA
Applications are invited from Nigerian nationals who wish to undertake postgraduate studies at
Masters level at Australian Universities commencing in January 2012. The Scholarships are funded by the Austrailian Government and managed by the Austrian Agency for Internation Development (AusAid).

Scholarships cover airfares, tuition fees, medical cover and a living allowance in Australia. Female applicants and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Study in Australia is subject to the successful applicant being issued with visa by the Australian Department of Immigration & Citizenship (DIAC). As part of the visa application process, immigration authorities require candidates to undergo a full medical examination.

The priority fields of study for the scholarships are:

Education

Public Policy (including public sector reform, trade and diplomacy)

Applications will be considered from candidates meeting the following requirements:

Possess, as a minimum, a 4 year Bsc degree

Be currently employed by and parastatal agencies) in Nigeria

Have at least two years’ post-graduation work experience. This work experience must be in a public sector role relevant to tour proposed field of study. Preference will be given to candidates with greater periods of experience

Not be more than 50 years of age at the date of your application

Have sufficient proficiency in Englidh to study at postgrate level

Not hold another scholarship that would give overlapping benefits

Can take up the award (if selected) in the 2012 academy year

International Sports Scholarship Programme:Designed for those with an excellent track record in national junior level competition or beyond, this scheme provides coaching, sports science services, lifestyle management support and financial assistance to talented individuals. Scholar athletes also have the opportunity to take time out of study and to extend their degree programmes to help concentrate on competition.

Scholarships are awarded in five core sports:

Canoeing
Golf
Swimming
Tennis
Triathlon

Athletes outwith these sports who are competing at European junior level or beyond may also be considered for a scholarship award. These sports benefit from co-ordinated and well-managed sports performance programmes that are athlete-centred, coach-led. Team members are expected to devote up to 15 hours per week to their sport to help ensure success. Stirling reaches the final stages of British Universities’ (BUSA) sports competitions regularly and is predominantly well placed in the annual BUSA sports rankings.

Sports scholars and academic life

The International Sports Scholarship Programme enables top class athletes to combine sport with a university degree course. It overcomes the biggest problem facing elite level performers, namely not having enough time to train and study. At Stirling, scholars can spread a three-year course over four years or a four-year course over five years. This reduces the volume of academic work each year, giving more time for training, practice and competition. However scholar athletes are expected to meet normal academic entry standards and also maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Applying for a Sports Scholarship

Application forms are available from the Department of Sports Studies. Applicants must have applied for a place on a degree programme at the University of Stirling, or be currently studying at the University for their sports scholarship application to be considered. Applications should be returned before the end of February for September entry to the International Sports Scholarship Programme.

Craig Gowans Football Scholarships

The University of Stirling has joined with Falkirk FC to offer football scholarships. This unique initiative will allow talented young footballers to combine their sport with a university degree.
Scholarship players will benefit from up to £2,500 a year throughout their degree, which will cover the cost of essential requirements including accommodation and equipment. The first four scholars will take up their place in September 2008, and to give added support and raise the standard of play, the University is investing in professional coaching staff, and is applying to join the East of Scotland League.

Applying for a Football Scholarship

To be considered for a scholarship award, applicants must meet the normal entry requirements to study at the University of Stirling and hold, or be in the process of applying for, a place on a degree programme. They will have to demonstrate footballing ability and a commitment to improve, and have the appropriate work ethic.
Sports scholarship application forms are available from the Department of Sports Studies.

BUTEX Scholarship for International Students

The Scholarship is open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place at a UK university which is BUTEX affiliated. Your study abroad or exchange place must be for the academic year 2008/09 and your place must be for a minimum of one semester.
The value of each scholarship is US$1000 and will be paid to the the successful applicants once they have arrived and registered at their host university.

R. Harper Brown Memorial Scholarship

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science . A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a €7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship.
In June 2011, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. AGRA is pleased to announce the launch of the first round of its fellowship programme under the Soil Health Training sub Program. The Programme aspires to harness the talent and leadership potential of young and professionals who will transform agriculture in Africa. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

The objective of the fellowship programme is to contribute to building capacity for Agricultural development through supporting the training of about 100 MSc and 50 PhD students in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) in nine universities in sub-Saharan Africa. Students will be drawn from 13 AGRA-focal countries in the phase of the program: Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana, Mali, Malawi, Rwanda, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The universities that will offer PhD training are:

• Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania – will take students from the eight East and Southern Africa region

• Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana – will offer PhD training to students from five countries in the West Africa region

The broad objectives of the program are to:

However applicants should not expect the internship to lead to immediate employment with the AfDB.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Applicants must be:

students, aged between eighteen (18) to thirty (30) years, and currently enrolled in a master’s level degree programme or its equivalent in a recognized public or private institution of higher learning. The candidate can apply for an internship within one year of having obtained such a degree.
provide a letter from their school confirming their enrollment.
citizens of one of the Bank’s member countries
applicants must be fluent in, at least, one of the Bank’s working languages (English or French).

Application Procedure

Applicants are required to complete an AfDB internship application form and forward it, with the endorsement of their educational institutions, to internship@afdb.org.

Completed applications must reach the Bank:

duly completed AfDB internship application form, counter-signed by the applicant's educational institution or sponsoring agency
current CV and cover letter
copies of the latest certificates and transcripts or equivalent institutional records
a recommendation letter from the academic institution they are currently attending
a brief description of the program or the topic (thesis or dissertation) to be prepared during the internship (when applicable).

Duration / Timing / Location of Internship

Internships will initially be for a period of three months, renewable for up to six months, if necessary.

Terms and Conditions

Interns will be provided with a monthly stipend of 550 UA (AfDB moving average exchange rate applicable in May 2010 is 1 UA=1.55733 $ = 1.10125 Euro = 2.08338 TND).

Interns will be responsible for their airfare to and from the location of their internship, their visa if needed and will be required to have international medical and accident insurance coverage for the duration of their internship.

As Part of its corporate social responsibility. Dufil Prima Foods Plc, last year instituted a scholarship programme for Nigerian students studying Nutrition and Dietetics at Masters degree level. The programmme is aimed at assisting the training of high level Nutrition and Dietetic manpower in the

Eligibility
The scholarship is open to all Nigerian studnts qualified for admission to an M. Sc programme in Nutrition (and Nutrition/Dietetics) in the Nigerian university system. Awards will be made to qualified and suitable students from every geo-political zone of the federation, including the FCT.

Applications are invited from qualified candidates in writing, clearly providing the following:

- Full Names (surname first)
- A copy of Letter of Admission into the programme (or photocopy of Application for Admission).
- Details of educational history (i.e schools attended with dates and certificates – photocopy should be attached)
- Evidence of state of origin obtained from the appropriate Local Government Area and duly signed by the Chairman or Secretary.

UNFPA Internship Programme

The Internship Programme offers a small group of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNFPA operations. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with
practical experience in various aspects of technical assistance.
Interns gain an understanding of multilateral assistance in population activities and of how UNFPA operates by working under the supervision of a senior staff member at UNFPA Headquarters in New York. The backgrounds of the interns are matched with the needs of the organization.

Qualifications

Candidates for the internship programme are selected on a competitive basis. The following qualifications are required for consideration:

Expressed interest in the field of development
Written and spoken proficiency in English; fluency in French, Spanish or Arabic would be an asset
Ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds.

Financial Aspects

Internships are offered on a non-remunerative basis. The costs connected with an intern's participation in the programme must be borne either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the student, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make his or her own arrangements for accommodation, travel, medical insurance and other requirements.

Applicants interested in participating in UNFPA's Internship Programme must submit a United Nations Personal History Form (P-11) and an Application Form along with a brief statement describing your interests and reasons for wishing to participate in the Programme. Australian Development Scholarships

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are a bilateral program within the Australian scholarships program.

Australian Development Scholarships are a highly valued form of development cooperation that aims to contribute to

the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote growth and stability. They provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia.

Fields of study are targeted to address agreed priority human resource and development needs of recipient countries, in line with Australia's bilateral aid program.

Australian Development Scholarships equip scholars with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian higher education institutions and technical colleges.

Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their country.

Up to 1000 Australian Development Scholarships are awarded each year across 31 countries with scholarships awarded equally between men and women.

Categories of Australian Development Scholarships

There are two categories of Australian Development Scholarships:

Public sector: Applicants are public sector employees who are nominated by their governments for an Australian Development Scholarship award through a competitive selection process. Applicants are required to return to their role in the public service at the completion of their award to strengthen public service capacity in their home country.

Open/equity: Applicants do not need to be nominated by their government or employer. Anyone who meets the selection criteria may apply under this category. Applicants are required to return to their country of citizenship after the completion of their award to contribute to the development of the identified priority sector in their country.

Scholarship benefits

Australian Development Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education Institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:

return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
contribution to initial visa expenses
establishment allowance—a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards expenses such as rental bonds, text books, study materials, additional medical insurance, home contents insurance, excess baggage etc
full tuition fees
Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) is a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by AusAID. From 1 July 2009, CLE payable to students studying under the Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) is A$25,000
Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia. See information on IAPs below
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)—provided to cover the student's basic medical costs
Pre-course English (PCE) fees—if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
Supplementary Academic Support (Tutorial Assistance)—may be available when essential to improve the student's performance to ensure their academic success
fieldwork (for research students only)—may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Eligibility

Applicants for Australian Development Scholarships must satisfy both the general eligibility criteria and specific criteria established for each country. Applicants will also need to satisfy all requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

General eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

be a citizen of an ADS participating country
not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
not married to, a de facto of, or engaged to, a person who holds or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
not hold or have held an Australian government funded scholarship in the preceding 12 months at the time of application
satisfy any specific criteria established by the applicant's country and/or government of citizenship
satisfy the admission requirements of the Institution at which the ADS is to be undertaken
satisfy all requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Country specific criteria

In addition to the above general eligibility criteria, applicants must also meet specific eligibility criteria imposed by the Government of their country of citizenship. Country specific eligibility criteria are available from the Australian Diplomatic Mission in your country of citizenship, or from the relevant link below.

Eligible countries

You are only eligible for ADS if you are a citizen of one of the countries listed below. Enquiries about ADS should be made with the Australian Diplomatic Mission in your country of citizenship.

Please note that Diplomatic Missions in countries not listed below, or AusAID Offices in Australia cannot provide country specific information about the availability of scholarships.

Application process

There is usually one annual selection round in each country. Each Country Program has different selection processes and timelines. Further information on individual country processes can be obtained from the Australian Diplomatic Mission in the country of citizenship or from the link to contact information above.

Conditions of ADS

Applicants who are offered an Australian Development Scholarship will be asked to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia declaring that they will comply with the conditions of the scholarship and the ADS Handbook before the ADS comes into effect. Partner governments may impose their own separate conditions on the scholarship.

The most significant condition relating to the award is that students are required to return to their country of citizenship for at least two years after completing their scholarship, to contribute to the economic and social development of their country. Failure to do so will incur a debt to the Commonwealth of Australia for the total value of the scholarship.

What can I study?

Australian Development Scholarships are available for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study, from Certificate level to PhD at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

The number of scholarships and fields of study are determined annually by each ADS participating country and in accordance with the Australian Government's bilateral development assistance program. Some countries may limit the level of study (technical, undergraduate or postgraduate) and give priority to certain fields of study to better meet development needs and Australia's specific aid objectives for each country.

Institution information kits

Once applicants have accepted an ADS offer and signed the contract with the Commonwealth of Australia, the relevant Institution will provide each ADS student with an Institution Information Kit covering pre-departure information.

The pre-departure information provides details on areas such as the Institution and the student's course, reception information, climate details, local childcare and schooling options, long term accommodation, living costs, support services available, public transport options and contact details for the Institution.

Introductory Academic Program

Institutions are required to provide a compulsory Introductory Academic Program (IAP) of between 4-6 weeks duration to all ADS students after their arrival in Australia and prior to the commencement of their formal academic program. The IAP is compulsory and all students must attend. The IAP covers the following areas:

Living arrangements: study and life in Australia, accommodation options, budgeting and living costs, and assistance available to students facing difficulties adapting to their new environment
Academic matters: advice about academic and language skills and information about study requirements and options
Legal requirements and entitlements: information about welfare and health services, social adjustment activities, chaplaincy and prayer rooms, part-time employment services, and relevant State laws
Student Support Services for international students.

Accommodation

Institutions participating in the ADS scheme are required to meet new ADS students at the airport on arrival and take them to their initial accommodation. Institutions are also responsible for arranging accommodation for students and where relevant their families for the first seven days they are in Australia. Students are responsible for the cost of this accommodation, but institutions will try to find accommodation that is reasonably priced, with appropriate furniture and facilities. Students are responsible for finding and paying for their own long-term accommodation.

Information regarding dependants

Students wishing to bring family members to Australia must contact the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) directly to ascertain the current requirements for family entry. More information about DIAC's entry requirements and the visa process are available from the DIAC website [external website]. ADS students will be required to ensure all their dependants have medical insurance in place for the period they will reside in Australia prior to their departure from their country of citizenship.

Students who bring family members to Australia are entirely responsible for their welfare, including all costs associated with visas, travel, medical, living, and schooling if applicable.
