Avalon Bay Apartments in Norwalk, CT Are Now Available for Rent!

The new Norwalk Avalon Bay building is located at 26 Belden Avenue in Norwalk, where the old Pathmark shopping center used to be. The spot has been under construction for many years now. I just had a tour with some clients of mine who are looking to rent next year, and we found the Norwalk Avalon Bay Apartments facility to be beautiful! There are coffee/ WiFi rooms, a fully outfitted fitness center (it's huge!), pool and lounge chairs, gorgeous deck to sit out and bar-b-que with the family, and a great lounge room with bar area, gaming table, air hockey table, etc. There are 2 and 3 bedroom units, all for rent. I believe that I heard that there are over 300 different room layouts.

The gentleman who took us around on the tour of the Norwalk Avalon Bay Apartments, named Corey Caldwell, was extremely knowledgeable, and very pleasant. Most of the facility is still under construction, but what we saw was absolutely lovely! The extra community rooms are all finished, the pool and barbeque area are complete, the lounge area is rented out for parties, also, in addition to being a great place to hang out. Corey took us into 2 different model apartments, one a 2 bedroom unit, and the other a 2 bedroom unit with loft. The 3 bedroom units will not be ready for viewing until next February or March.

The unit with the loft was great for my clients, since they have college kids who will be coming home occasionally, and the loft has a HUGE, Gianormous walk-in closet in the loft that they thought they would use to house a child on vacations. Either that, or my client (the woman) would use it for her clothes and shoes .....

The Norwalk Avalon Bay Apartments definitely got a full thumbs up from all of us!

The Wilton Arms in Wilton, CT is the oldest rental apartment building in Wilton.

When the soldiers came home from the war after World War II, the town needed a place to house all of these young men and women coming home. It has been said that Wilton answered the need with a fabulously enormous building. It sat atop a hill in town, overlooking the town center. A beautiful, large white apartment building was built for all of the returning men and women and their spouses to call home.

Today, it is still an apartment building, and rooms are still for rent there. The Wilton Community Nursery School is located next door to it, the Post Office is on the other side, and Center School (now an office building) is across the way. Hubbard Road runs through that now. All of that area used to be ~~lawns~~ fields from the Nursery School down to Center School - my kids even used to sled down the hill from the nursery school building to Center School. Much has changed, most of it for the better, but it's still sad to see the fields in the center of town go .....

The town in the late 1940s and 1950s was primarily a farming town, and Georgetown, to the north, was a major wire mill town. During the 1950s, there was a lot of housing development for the ever burgeoning young families who found the area attractive. Ranches were the most popular style of home built in the area at that time. In the 1970s and 1980s, the colonial home became popular.

There are some places in town for folks to rent - Wilton Arms, Ogden House, Avalon Springs, and then various individual spots here and there ...

Wilton is located in lower Fairfield County, surrounded by New Canaan, Ridgefield, Redding, Weston, Westport and Norwalk. The Long Island Sound is 10 miles away, so a lot of folks enjoy the beaches and boating. New York City is 30 miles away, and hour's drive or train ride, Philadelphia is a 2 hours drive, and Boston is a 3 hour drive away.

According to the 2000 census, there are approximately 6,000 households in the Wilton community. The public school system is one that continually strives for perfection, in the arts, sports, and academically, consistently receiving awards for excellence. Wilton schools consist of two pre-K – grade 2 elementary schools (Ina Driscoll and Miller Schools,) one school for grades 3-5 (Cider Mill School,) one school for grades 6-8 (Middlebrook School )and one high school (Wilton High School.)

Wilton is a rural/ suburban residential community of approximately 18,000 people, located approximately one hour by car or train from central New York City. Historical sites are represented throughout the town and the small downtown area has a village atmosphere. You will find a four screen cinema multiplex, restaurants, coffee shops, a library, the famous Village Market, its own Play Shop, and a great variety of shops and churches.

The Wilton Crest complex is located in the center of Wilton, on River Road, a short walk from all of the great amenities that Wilton has to offer. There are 109 units in all, ranging from studios to 3 bedrooms. The size ranges from 530 square feet in the studios to 1,782 for the three bedroom units. The complex was built in 1989 with nice bluish grey wood siding, forced air heat and air conditioning, and beautiful landscaping. In addition, there are sidewalks all the way to town for easy access.

A pond is located in the center of the Wilton Crest complex, and all of the surrounding condos have decks overlooking the water and the nature that abounds therein. All of the two and three bedroom units have interior decks which are completely private, in addition to the exterior decks. A few units have both decks in total privacy, but that is not the norm. The landscaping is beautifully maintained, and all is weeded and mulched at all times.

Most of the units in Wilton Crest have a garage, whether attached or not. Some of the three bedroom condominiums have 2 car garages that are attached to the lower level, some of the two bedroom units have a single garage attached to the lower level, also. However, if your unit has a detached garage, you have a great deal more space in your lower level. The detached garage is never far away.

In addition, the complex boasts a pool and tennis court for the owners. This past year, the exterior of the units were all power washed and stained, and the driveways and parking areas repaved. As the maintenance folks went around, they also stained all of the steps and entrance decks to each unit. This is a well-maintained complex.
Wilton is lucky indeed.

Wilton is very lucky to have such fabulous condominium complexes to boast about. You can walk to the train, market, restaurants, shops, parks, and enjoy a safe walk along picturesque River Road.

The weather is not as nice in CT as in Vancouver!

In CT, we have had snowstorm after snow storm. Last year, in January, my witch hazel chose to bloom! Gorgeous yellow blossoms all over it, lasting for a month. It carried us through until we got crocuses in March.

Ethical Question...... to report, or not to????

Ethical Question.... to report, or not to????

If you knew that an agent listed a home on the mls without a signed agreement with the homeowner, what would you do? I have checked with our mls, and it is a HUGE violation. However, the only way it can be reported is to drag in the home owner, who would rather not get involved in a legal mess. So, does this violation just go on without any repercussions?

The home owner is no longer working with the agent, and no longer interested in selling her home, and the listing was withdrawn after I spoke with her, but .....

Does anyone have similar stories, and how did you reconcile with the dilemna presented?

A New Greenway Along our Route 7 in Wilton!

A New Greenway Along our Route 7 in Wilton!

There is substantial rumoring about a new "Greenway" along Route 7 here in Wilton. Years ago, the state bought up, using eminent domain, a lot of land along the old Route 7. The intention was to build a huge Super 7 the whole way from Danbury to Norwalk. Norwalk approved the state's building a Super 7 through most of the town, to the Wilton border. There it stopped, as Wilton wasn't so sure that this was what was in the best interest of its residents. Law suits ensued for many many years, environmental issues were raised, etc.

Now, it appears that there is no money left, even if the highway were to be approved, so the residents are fighting for the "Greenway" to be located on the empty land. This will be a fabulous, long, flat wide strip along the Norwalk River all the way up to Danbury, where all can walk, bike, run, rollerblade, or anything else you would like. I think that this could perhaps also be beneficial to our real estate values, and increase our home prices.

How fabulous would that be?

I cannot wait for the New Greenway Along our Route 7 in Wilton!

Deer Fencing For Dummies in Wilton, Ct

Here in Wilton, CT, we seemed to have an unbelievable number of deer years ago. I was always appalled when I would take my little kids out to the swing set and find these wonderful little piles of deer pellets. This seemed a little disgusting to me. So, I decided to take action.

In a very short time, I was able to string electric wire to rebar posts, using the proper porcelain insulators to attach them. Three wires about a foot apart strung from rebar post to rebar post (so easy to jam into the earth!) the whole way around the property. Our lot was fairly wooded, so where there were trees, I just attached to the trunks of the trees. The driveway was another problem, as it wasn't long before the deer found that opening. A beautiful wooden gate solved that problem.

The benefit from this fencing was - voila!!!! All of a sudden, the deer couldn't eat my rhodedendruns and azaleas all winter! Oh! I also was able to grow the most beautiful hostas, lilies, etc... Wow!

Then I discovered that one limb lying from the ground across any wire anywhere could and would short out the entire perimeter.

That was the year I ordered eight foot high plastic mesh from Benner's Gardens in PA. That was just as easy to string from tree trunk to tree trunk, and then longer stronger posts from Home Depot where there were no trees. Gone was the electric wire ....

Then I discovered that my neighbors were just as interested, and we all could keep our dogs inside the fencing more easily. All of a sudden, we had 4 neighbors, all with 2 acres each, totally fenced. The deer were going crazy!!!!!

Now that our town has begun to have yearly efforts to cull the herds, we do not see many deer. I think if I took down the fencing, they would be there at night munching away...... I have 2.5 acres full of rhodies, azaleas, hostas, lilies, mountain laurel, hydrangea, etc. They would have a hay day!

A great benefit is that I can have any bush or plant that I would like in my gardens, and can have great first impressions in the summer or winter for my property. We have beautiful landscaping for our home as a result. The lucky thing here is that we are so wooded around the perimeter, that you do not even see the fencing.

Does your Town Allow Plastic Bags?

Wilton, CT has just put out the idea that they will ban plastic bags in all stores within the next six months. I thought that it had already been passed, but then read "probably six months....." What is there to think about? Are they worried about the stores' inventories of bags? Who cares? Let's get started! Besides, there are some amazingly cool bags out there!

Westport, CT, the neighboring town, has had a ban in place for a while, and found there was no resistence to it anywhere. Stores, public, - all love it! No more bags blowing in the wind along the highways, nor in the rivers and streams, and none in the parking lots or beaches, either! Everyone had already bought all of these recycleable bags, -- they were just forgetting to use them. I know I forget sometimes, and remember sometimes.

Costco has never had bags to hand out, and all of us "make do." I think it's time for all of the stores to begin behaving "green" and forcing we the public to be "green" and not just talk about it.... We should still be busy reusing the ones we have in our homes, but not bringing home more! Let's learn how to keep our real estate clean...

This is an easy fix for our environment, unlike global warming..... lots of baby steps, and we'll get there!

I certainly hope that Wilton will consider going "green" with recycleable bags sooner than 6 months!

FIDO'S FOOD BIN, an absolutely amazing pet supply store, has an extremely loyal following for miles around. I stopped by today to say "Hello" and Liz immediately asked, "Is it time already?" (I collect wonderful donations from the community stores to distribute to the returning Survivors during their celebration dinner at the Relay For Life each year in May. - They always contribute!)

I told her "No," and went on to explain that I was just at the Village Market, and thought I would stop in. A gal walked in with her dog, and asked for a Valentine treat for her dog, and -- this next part amazed me! Liz told her that she didn't have what the gal wanted, but she could find it upstairs in the Village Market, and then told her exactly where to go in the store to find it! She then went on to explain that the treats at the Market were very natural and clean (no antibiotics, chemicals of any kind..) as their things at Fido's were. I am sure that this gal was about to become a CLIENT FOR LIFE, and also would tell all of her friends about this find.

As I looked around, I realized what they were referring to..... there were no brands that the average person is used to seeing. All were natural, and free of all chemicals, etc. There were bags and cans of food from WELLNESS, BLUE BUFFALO, EVO, and MERRICK. All looked so healthy, so I had to ask about it all. Skip stepped in and explained that they screen all the foods to make sure that they are from farms that are organic, and free of the chemicals, and even check that the factories are clean and do not add anything.

Blue Buffalo is a local company that is extremely conscientious about how their foods are produced. In addition, they donate a lot to the cure for cancer in animals with every sale.

I asked what is their "MOST POPULAR ITEM? -What do folks drive far to get?"" I was so surprised to have Skip jump in immediately with, "OUR PRICES!" He went on to explain that their prices are lower than Petco and Petsmart on most of their products, and that folks came from far to buy from them. They have been in town for 13 years, so that speaks to the fact that they have a huge local clientele with the local homeowners.

They are an extremely customer oriented store, also. Everyone is greeted by name as they come in.... The WOW FACTOR!!!!

So, I had to write something after all of that.... go check them out - I don't even have pets anymore... and I love going in..

Giving to Relay For Life, local churches' silent auctions, school sports fundraisers, etc. They sure give back!

Oh! I forgot to tell you! They are Cancer Surviviors themselves!

The Turnover Shop in Wilton, CT is located just around the corner and below the Wilton Village Market (best food store in town!) Yes, it is the local thrift shop!

This shop benefits the Wilton school system - all donations and monies made go directly to the schools in town. They have a wonderful system, whereby one can pop in anytime between 10 am and 4 pm and just drop donations, pick up a donation tax sheet, and out you go. If you wanted to consign items, you would need to go between 10 am and noon on only Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most everyone just drops donations from their b and runs. It is a nice way to clean out your home closets, and contribute to the Wilton schools.

The staff is 100% volunteer, and most have been working there for at least 20 years, if not a lot longer. They know everyone in town, and all that is going on in town.

Many folks go in and browse the racks during the consignment drop off times, as that's when the pricier items will come in. There are always fabulous treasures to be found! Beautiful mink coats have been known to be dropped off!

When too many things have been dropped off, or the items are too large to have there (furniture,) they will simply send the extras off to Bridgeport, where all will be put to great use.

Wilton, CT - Village Market

It's the center of a lot of residents' lives... A great little market that stocks more than I can find in the local Stop 'n' Shop, and a lot of varieties, too!

This market is interested in what the consumer of the area wants and participates in almost every fund raiser and community effort that exists. If the Relay for Life is coming to town, you know that the Village Market donated a lot of goods, time and money to the event. I know, as I have worked the Relay for Life now for many years ..... and they also help out with most of the school events!

They have a great spot in the store to keep the kids happy - a movie corner. Always playing some great Disney movie for the kids to watch while mom or dad shops. There's also a huge basket loaded with goodies for the kids under 12 who enter the store to dig into (I know that my kids dug in a little longer than 12.... oops!).... called "Kid's Club"

Around the corner from the Village market, we have the Turnover Shop (clothing consignment shop,) Fido's Food Bin for the animal owners, and Scoops, our local ice cream hangout.... Next time you are in town, stop on in to the Village Market in Wilton! I've been here in Wilton for 36 years, and have always been a faithful customer...

SCOOPS was opened over 25 years ago in Wilton, CT by two local women who found a huge need for a place to go to take the kids for ice cream. Wilton had bookstores, florists, markets, banks, clothing and sports and hardware stores, but no "treat" stores. So, these two very good friends of mine named Care Heeks and Shelly Lawson opened one. What is it they say? Find a need, and fill it! That they did.

All of the kids' sports teams go straight to Scoops to celebrate their wins, or to drown their losses..... a fabulous congregating spot!

Neither Care nor Shelly are there, anymore, other owners run it now, but the same spirit and intent and excitement about the local families still "runs with the land," so to speak....

Every holiday has a new display of candies and treats - and even the flavors of Buck's ice cream vary a little to accommodate holidays, too. Local bakers bring in their specialties, and you may also order directly there.

I attended Rain Camp all day yesterday -- WHAT AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF GREAT INFORMATION! Well Done!! I enjoyed every minute! Rain Camp is an event run by the Active Rain (it's a real estate site) group. It's focus yesterday was on the new social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and how to use them to our benefit. I certainly learned a lot, but also know how much I do not know......

I returned home on the shuttle (first time - I'll admit I was nervous...) from Grand Central, and then the Metro-North train (first time for me- we always drive in), getting off in Norwalk, CT - then the drive to Wilton.... to find a request for me to send out a blog.

I received an email from a fellow named Paul James at the Mesothelioma Center for the Connecticut Department of Public Health. He is the National Awareness Coordinator (paul@asbestos.com), and was asking me to please pass on this information about asbestos in our homes in my blogs. He had read my blogs, and said he thought that if I would put this information into my blog, it would be spread to a greater number of the viewing public. That is just what they had been discussing at the event yesterday.

An absolutely wonderful opportunity to pass on some important and relevant information.

As we get further and further away from the era when asbestos was more common, fewer and fewer new home owners are aware of the dangers hidden in asbestos. So many of the homes around us contain asbestos, in popcorn ceilings, insulation, heating systems, siding, roofing, linoleum, and many more areas we never think of. So many people just change the flooring without realizing that they are ripping up asbestos, and then just take it to the dump - another NO-NO! There are ways and places to dispose of asbestos. If you suspect that your home may have asbestos, and you would like to remove it, please take care of you and the environment for our children, and DO IT PROPERLY! Just send an email to Paul (above) and he will guide you.

Asbestos in your home

Located in the Northeastern part of the United States, Connecticut is one of the top states to call home. The path to purchasing a home is one of the more exciting and rewarding times in one’s life, but it is also one that can bring additional responsibilities into play. Many older homes may need inspections, renovations and additional repairs. If any asbestos is located in your home, the best thing to do is leave it un-disturbed until a home inspector can determine the best course of action. In many situations, the best action is no action. Asbestos that is disturbed or damaged due to age is known as “friable” asbestos. This is a concern because its toxic fibers can easily circulate and become inhaled. The removal of asbestos must be performed by licensed abatement contractors who are trained in handling dangerous materials.

Although asbestos exposure does not always lead a related illness, long term inhalation of its fibers can cause a rare but severe ailment known as malignant mesothelioma. Asbestos-related illnesses may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure, which makes mesothelioma diagnosis even more difficult.

The removal of asbestos must be performed by licensed abatement contractors who are trained in handling dangerous materials. They work under state and federal regulations to ensure no health concerns arise from improper removal.

Green Building

The Connecticut Department of Public Health is committed to protecting the public from asbestos-containing materials by educating and assisting with asbestos removal, transport and disposal. The removal of hazardous substances must be performed by professional abatement contractors who are trained in these matters. Eco-friendly options must be considered when the removal is complete.

Green building is the consequence of a design that will increase energy efficiency, water and have a direct impact on your health and the environment. It actually, really works!

I am soo excited about this Active Rain!!!

I have always assumed that it would take years and years of blogging and a beautiful website, etc. I have been semi-active with Active Rain now for three years, and put up a post on my blog occasionally.

I just looked at what would happen if I googled "Wilton CT real estate," and found that Active Rain was near the top of the first page, and I am featured, so it immediately puts me out there! The only competition on the first page was big brokerage houses, which is to be expected. Perhaps I will surpass them also one day. Hmmmm ... wouldn't that be interesting?

This just gave me an enormous amount of inspiration to continue and expand what I am doing! The next thing that I would like to expand into is placing pictures and articles about Wilton on the internet. It is such a fabulous area to live in, and extremely picturesque with all of this snow we have at the moment. Wish me luck! Gosh, I love what I do! Working with people and finding them homes and situations that fit them and make them happy is the best!

To retain your current clients/ customers, you need to keep in touch with them. Let these relationships lapse, and you risk losing the golden goose — that loyal and dependable source of business and referrals that has been the key to your longtime success. The good news? There are more ways than ever to stay close to your clients/ customers. Here are some ideas for staying in touch:

• Acknowledge your clients/customers by sending thank you notes and special occasion cards (birthday, anniversary, holiday, etc.).

• Send informational flyers and include a discount coupon or gift certificate.

• Celebrate your business anniversary with an open house for customers.

• Mail a monthly or quarterly newsletter, chock full of practical information and useful tips. Include contact information, but avoid the heavy sell. Position yourself as the go-to solution source.

However you choose to communicate, be authentic, patient, responsive and consistent. When you treat your clients/ customers with respect and give them lots more than they expect, these relationships will continue to glow like gold.

New Inspiration for Blogging after 7 months of Quiet

New Inspiration for Blogging after 7 months of Quiet

Well, this morning we boarded our flight to Bozeman, Montana to see Wendy and Dave for 8 days, and, of course, everyone was so helpful that I neglected to grab my computer or book out of my carryon bag. It ended up in an overhead three rows behind us, and had to be turned sideways to fit—so now other folk’s things were piled in front. By the time I sat down, I realized I had two and a half hours with no book or computer, and both my seat mates had great books they were already deeply immersed in.

So, as I sat and tried to read “Delta,” I began to think about the direction of all of my efforts in the real estate business, and how I had neglected all of my friends from years past. Then, through the fog, I had a brainstorm! I feel so totally out of touch, not being involved in the school system or with families anymore in my “Dagny’s Kiddie-Care” business (now that it is closed) ----- why not call 1-3 friends every week and pick their brains on all of the fun goings on around town from their perspective? The pickings could be anything from the latest great trip, to a road being paved, to next week’s Pumpkin Festival, etc. This could be local information, someone’s experience, some great tidbit, etc. This way I can still stay in touch, and yet GIVE to everyone, the way I like to, through a blog. It would be anonymous or quoted, whatever each would like. This way, we could all share….. A shop in town might like to be quoted for sure, for example. They might like to spread the word about a special item or sale, ….. It could be a great source of information for all of us in this area of Fairfield County and Wilton. If anyone had any awesome pictures, I could post them on my South Wilton localism blog along with the information/ stories …..

Is There a Good Use for Old Balloons?

Whenever I conduct an Open House for a listing, whether the home is large or small, single family or condominium, I always bring loads of balloons to it. I love to use them to attach to signs to grab folks’ attention to come in, but I also love to have the balloons in the house. That way, it looks festive and welcoming. If families come with children, it’s a great gift for the kids, and an ice breaker for the adults, if they are uncomfortable about being approached.

However, there have recently been some open houses that have not had any children come at all. Now, I HATE to pop balloons that have not been enjoyed yet.
Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am HUGE on recycling. An unused balloon for me is the kiss of death. A couple of weeks ago, I finished an open house with 8 balloons, and no kids around. On my way to the car, I passed a father and little boy starting out on a walk. Yea! One balloon given out! But, as I picked up my signs, I was picking up more balloons! Oh, no! I would glance into each car that passed me, hoping desperately to find a child in a car seat. One or two, and I passed the balloons to them…. But, at the end of the day, I still had four balloons, and no one around.

Where could I find some little kids in a friendly environment to give these balloons away? Yureka! The Village Market! In the center of Wilton! So, I drove over, and walked in, carrying my four balloons. There! At the checkout was a family with two kids… I asked the mom if she minded me sharing these balloons with her kids – yes! -- yea! All were totally delighted! Now, perhaps I would have been a little better served if I had remembered to introduce myself, so they might have had a clue that I was a real estate agent, and they might remember me sometime in the future…….

I was just so ecstatic to be able to give those balloons another life after the open house, and watch the absolute delight on those kids’ faces……

How much fun is it when in a quiet market like this, a real estate agent can get a lot of awards!

I just opened a letter from the company announcing that I got Top Selling Agent Award for July from Raveis in Wilton, CT! That's now several for this year.

I think that if you can locate the qualified buyers at this time, there is plenty of business out there. There certainly are sellers with a huge desire to sell their homes, so all we need are QUALIFIED buyers. Last year, we all thought that the mortgage companies had become overly careful about who to lend to. NOW, it is becoming extremely difficult. I just the other day spoke with someone out West who is being turned down for a mortgage because of a late payment on their mortgage three years ago! They were only a week late, and it, get this, was because the bank sent the bill to the wrong address! These folks have huge earnings and a substantial downpayment, so that is not the problem. Crazy buying world. The falling prices are not only because of the short sales and foreclosures, but also due to the mortgage problems. These mortgage issues are not getting a lot of press any longer.

I do run into a lot of confused buyers who have saved for this opportunity, and have "ligit" money, but are being turned down for things like this. They are trying to participate in the "save the economy" plan, but are stopped by the banks, who are now lending rarely. When will this end?

I am finally not quite so sore. Lori Price and I played 5 matches in three days!! My 4.0 team went to Sectionals over the hottest weekend of the summer - two weeks ago- and won well until the finals. A team from Natick, MA just got the better of us at the end. Nationals for them, home for us!

If Your Wallet Is Stolen

Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice!
A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company.

WATCH YOUR MONEY !!
This came to me in an email... I do not know who the originator is, but... Kudos to them! I want to pass it along .... it makes a lot of sense.
Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company.

1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'

2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.

Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(S) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card , had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:

5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this..)

7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your let, if it has been stolen:
1.) Equifax : 1-800-525-6285
2.) Experian (formerly=TRW): 1-888-397-3742
3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289
4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.
