Two Men Accused Of Stealing From Paul Walker’s Car Crash Wreckage

Two men have been accused of stealing
from the vehicle that Paul Walker and
Roger Rodas crashed in.
Prosecutors filed charges against the
two men after they allegedly stole a
part from the wrecked Porsche Carrera
GT after the car accident on Nov. 30.
According to Deputy District Attorney
Sera Boyadjian, both men have been
charged with one felony count of grand
theft of personal property. Jameson
Brooks Witty and Anthony Edward
Janow have also been charged with two
misdemeanor counts each of destroying
evidence and "resisting, obstructing
and delaying a peace officer."
Janow is due to surrender on Tuesday,
while Witty already posted bail and is
expected to face a judge on Jan. 3,
2014.
Prosecutors claim that on the evening
of the fatal crash, both men stole one of
the roof's panels from a tow truck
carrying the demolished vehicle when it
was stopped at a red light in Valencia,
Calif.
They also allege that the crime took
place after they were told by a Los
Angeles County Sheriff's deputy that
they were not allowed to tamper with
the crime scene in any way whatsoever.
If both are convicted as charged, they
could face a maximum of four years, six
months in county
jail.
The charges come just one day after a
massive unofficial memorial rally and
car cruise took place around the loop
where Walker and Rodas died.
Thousands of Walker fans and car
enthusiasts came together to place
flowers at the site and remember the
fallen Fast and the Furious actor.
According to a coroner's report released
Dec. 4, Walker died of the combined
effects of traumatic and thermal
injuries resulting from the crash.

Iyayi Burial: What made ASUU Members Boo Reverend Father

Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, a
Catholic priest, angered the members
of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) on December 6,
2013, when he appealed to them to call
off the strike and trust the Federal
Government on meeting their demands
during Festus Iyayi's commendation
service.
The visibly angry ASUU members
interrupted Rev. Obinyan and refused
to say amen to some prayers offered by
him, and shouted on him to leave the
podium.
Rev. Obinyan was booed while giving
his homily at the commendation
service held for the former President of
ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi at the
University of Benin.
In his address, the priest advised ASUU
not to give the Federal Government the
privilege of satisfaction of fighting and
defeating them, stating that he
discovered that many ASUU members
were retreating, as well as collapsing
their structures.
Rev. Obinyan further urged ASUU to
trust the Federal Government to keep
to its promise by calling-off the strike:
"My appeal is to request you to make
surrender the tool of power. Do not give
the FG the privilege of satisfaction of
fighting and defeating you. We rely on
that voice. We believe in that voice. I
humbly request you to surrender first
in this fight. You have made your point
eloquently and clear enough. I know the
Federal Government cannot be trusted
because of their antecedent, but I
request you to please trust them now.
"ASUU will never lose by it. They will
gain by it. Be assured of our prayers.
We are at the receiving end. Many of
your foot soldiers are collapsing. Some
are retreating", the priest said.
On hearing that most of ASUU
members started shouting, so Rev.
Obinyan concluded:
"Christ will not tell you to fight on. He
will tell you to forgive and forget. My
appeal is because of the sufferers."
In his comments on the incident, the
President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa- Fagge,
said the Reverend Father spoke for
himself, and that ASUU members were
steadfast in their demand. He further
confirmed they would not call-off the
strike until the Federal Government
meet the four-point demand in their
letter.

Nelson Mandela is dead

JOHANNESBURG — Nelson Mandela,
South Africa's first black president and
an enduring icon of the struggle against
racial oppression, died on Thursday, the
government announced, leaving the
nation without its moral center at a
time of growing dissatisfaction with the
country's leaders.
Mr. Mandela spent 27 years in prison
after being convicted of treason by the
white minority government, only to
forge a peaceful end to white rule by
negotiating with his captors after his
release in 1990. He led the African
National Congress, long a banned
liberation movement, to a resounding
electoral victory in 1994, the first fully
democratic election in the country's
history.
Mr. Mandela served just one term as
South Africa's president and had not
been seen in public since 2010, when
the nation hosted the soccer World Cup.
But his decades in prison and his
insistence on forgiveness over
vengeance made him a potent symbol
of the struggle to end this country's
brutally codified system of racial
domination, and of the power of
peaceful resolution in even the most
intractable conflicts.
Years after he retreated from public life,
his name still resonated as an emblem
of his effort to transcend decades of
racial division and create what South
Africans called a Rainbow Nation.
Yet Mr. Mandela's death comes during a
period of deep unease and painful self-
examination for South Africa.
In the past year and a half, the country
has faced perhaps its most serious
unrest since the end of apartheid,
provoked by a wave of wildcat strikes
by angry miners, a deadly response on
the part of the police, a messy
leadership struggle within the A.N.C.
and the deepening fissures between
South Africa's rulers and its
impoverished masses.
Scandals over corruption involving
senior members of the party have fed a
broader perception that Mr. Mandela's
near saintly legacy from the years of
struggle has been eroded by a more
recent scramble for self-enrichment
among a newer elite.
After spending decades in penurious
exile, many political figures returned to
find themselves at the center of a grab
for power and money. President Jacob
Zuma was charged with corruption
before rising to the presidency in 2009,
though the charges were dropped on
largely technical grounds. He has faced
renewed scrutiny in the past year over
$27 million spent in renovations to his
house in rural Zululand.
Graphic cellphone videos of police
officers abusing people they have
detained have further fueled anger at a
government seen increasingly out of
touch with the lives of ordinary South
Africans.
Mr. Mandela served as president from
1994 to 1999, stepping aside at the age
of 75 to allow his deputy, Thabo Mbeki,
to run and take the reins. Mr. Mandela
spent his early retirement years
focused on charitable causes for
children and later speaking out about
AIDS, which has killed millions of
Africans, including his son Makgatho,

Kenyan Man Jailed For Raping Goat, Goat Is Witness In Court

A Kenyan man found guilty of having
sex with a goat was forced to come face
to face with his victim, after the animal
was brought into court as a witness.
Katana Kitsao Gona, 28, has been jailed
for 10 years after admitting sexually
abusing the animal in the Kenyan town
of Malindi.
The nanny goat, which was presented
to the magistrate, according to The
Sun, showed little emotion as she
watched from the corner of the court
room as her attacker was jailed.
The court heard Gona was caught when
a local resident found him naked in a
field having sex with the grazing goat,
which was tied up, The Star reported.
The goat's owner was alerted and
arrived at the scene with other
residents who also witnessed the sordid
scene.
He was arrested by police and a medical
examination confirmed sexual abuse
had taken place.
Gona told the court his wife is disabled
and depends on him but was
nevertheless jailed.
Kenyan media said it was rare for
animals to be presented as evidence in
court cases, the Mirror reported.

BREAKING NEWS: Jonathan and His Wife, Patience, Admitted Into German Hospital

President Goodluck Jonathan and
his wife, Patience Jonathan, have
both checked in at a hospital in
Germany as a result of a yet to be
disclosed ailment.
On Tuesday night, President
Jonathan had abruptly flown out of
Abuja ostensibly to attend a
Summit on peace and security in
Africa organized by French
government. Several ministers
and service chiefs accompanied
him to the airport for the late night
flight, but only a
handful of officials travelled on the
actual flight.
A reliable source at the Presidency
told Sahara Reporters that,
contrary to the impression created
that the trip was for the French-
sponsored security summit,
Jonathan and his wife are
undergoing tests and receiving
treatment in the same German
hospital where Patience spent
several months last year.
According to Sahara Reporters, the
source added that Mr President
had been feeling unwell since
returning from a recent trip to
London where he was hospitalized
for a serious
stomach-related ailment. Sahara
Reporters had disclosed that the
president fell seriously ill after a
bout of bingeing on alcohol.
But the Presidency had denied
that report before now.
The source revealed that plans
were made for President Jonathan
to receive medical attention in
Germany after he suddenly fell ill
last weekend in his home-state of
Bayelsa during a
visit there. The president's sudden
illness almost led to his
emergency evacuation to
Germany, the Presidency source
said.
Sahara Reporters sources stated
that Mr. Jonathan has had
recurring abdominal troubles in
recent weeks.

Edo Widow Shuns PDP’s N250,000 Gift

Mrs. Joy Ifijeh, the widow who was
upbraided by Governor Adams
Oshiomhole for putting her goods
on the road, yesterday shunned the
N250,000 gift given by the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP).
She was not present at the launch
of an empowerment fund to cater
for widows in the state by the state
chapter of the PDP.
Mrs. Ifijeh, who apologised to
Governor Oshiomhole for putting
her goods on the road, was given
automatic employment and a cash
gift of N2 million by the governor.
The state Chairman of the PDP,
Chief Dan Orbih, said they launched
the Widows Empowerment
Programme because the party had
received N1 million since it posted
the video clip of the governor's
encounter with the widow on
facebook and YouTube.
He described the governor's job
offer and the cash gift as a 'Greek
gift' that would not wipe the tears
of widows in the state.
Orbih presented the N250,000 to
Mrs. Pat Erhabor for onward
transmission to Mrs. Ifijeh and
made a personal donation of N50,
000 towards the widows' fund.

FG’s sack threat for ASUU members ‘ll fail – Aturu

LAGOS — Lagos based lawyer and
activist, Barrister Bamidele Aturu,
yesterday, dismissed the Federal
Government's sack threat to striking
university lecturers, saying that
government has failed to appreciate the
rot in the university system. Rather, he
said government should meet the
demands of Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU.
Aturu, who spoke at the 6th Annual Law
and Social Development lecture and
public presentation of a book, 'Law and
Practice of the National Industrial
Court," at Lagos Airport Hotel, said it is
"sad" that the Fededral Government
has failed to appreciate the rot in the
university system which ASUU wants
corrected," adding that members of
ASUU would not be cowed by such
threats.
Condemning the "resume or be sacked"
order, Mr. Aturu said: "The truth of the
matter is that we no longer have
universities in Nigeria. This explains
why many people among the ruling
class have their children and wards in
foreign universities.
"The demands of ASUU in my view are
legitimate and patriotic. The
government should do everything
possible to meet those reasonable
demands in order for our schools to be
reopened as quickly as possible."
He recalled attempts by previous
military governments to cow ASUU
which failed, and warned that the threat
of the education minister will also fail.
The guest lecturer, Professor Sofiri Joab-
Peterside of the Department of
Sociology, Universtity of Port Harcourt,
who spoke on 'The Economy, the
Rogues and the Law: The Development
Conundrum,' noted that, "the average
Nigerian lives on less than one dollar a
day. There are no roads, just as the
public hospitals themselves are "dead"
and the high education sector
practically broken with ASUU on strike
for more than four months over the
Federal Government's unfulfilled
agreement, while the culture of
impunity has become an integral part of
the norm of political appointees."
Also, Barrister Aturu, who insisted that
those responsible for the accident that
killed Professor Festus Iyayi be brought
to book, said, "Iyayi did not die in an
accident, he was murdered, pure and
simple.
"We reiterate our call for the driver of
the escort vehicle that snuffed the life
out of this noble champion of the
oppressed to be fished out and
prosecuted. They may have privatised
the economy; we won't let them
privatise our lives."
He also dismissed the on- going
National Conference, saying that it will
not achieve the objectives of the
original proponents of the idea. Though,
he spoke against the decision to
boycott it, suggesting that progressive
organisations should use the forum to
state their views on the state of the
nation.
Professor Sofiri Joab- Peterside, also a
guest speaker lamented that Nigeria
has been unable to make any
remarkable development as a result of

after being caught having sex during an
undercover drug operation, according to police reports in Arizona. The police officer had an affair with the
drug dealer, who she was investigating,
and blew the cover of the investigation
while she lay in bed with him.
Tempe Police Detective Jessica Dever-
Jakusz, 38, met her lover in June 2013,
following an undercover purchase of
narcotics, and in August, she was
having sex with him at his home on an
ongoing basis.
On October 10, after having sex, Dever-
Jakusz, who is married to a police
officer, revealed that she was working
undercover to arrest him.
Police detained the drug dealer for
questioning, and he admitted to having
a sexual relationship with the
undercover detective, Dever-Jakusz.
Dever-Jakusz is a 13 year veteran of the
police force.
The drug dealer revealed explicit text
messages he exchanged with Dever-
Jakusz, including one in which she was
asking him for permission to come over
to his house later that day.
The affair ruined the five month
undercover investigation, which is
nicknamed Molly.
The drug dealer told police that he was
surprised when Dever-Jakusz told him
she was a police officer actively trying
to send him to prison.
Tempe Police said that no charges will
be filed against the suspect with whom
Dever-Jakusz had the relationship with.

2 on duty California police officers murder homeless man

arrested and charged with murder after
they allegedly killed a homeless man,
according to court proceedings in
California.The two Fullerton police officers are
headed to trial more than two years
after the violent confrontation.
Manuel Ramos will go on trial on
Monday, on charges of second-degree
murder and involuntary manslaughter
in the death of 37-year-old Kelly
Thomas, who died after an encounter
with six police officers.
Jay Cicinelli will also stand trial on
charges of involuntary manslaughter
and excessive use of force.
Both have pleaded not guilty.
The case marks the first time in the
history of Orange County that a police
officer has been charged with murder
for actions committed on duty. The
confrontation between the homeless
man and police was captured on video
surveillance.

BBC award: Yaya Toure beats Mikel, Moses, others

Yaya Toure was named the BBC's
African Footballer of the Year for 2013
on Monday.
It was the fifth straight year the
Manchester City star had made the
shortlist but the first time he'd taken
the award.
"Thank you to all the fans around the
world who continue to support me and
who love me a lot," said Toure in a BBC
statement. "I'm very proud, I'm very
happy, this award is amazing.
"It's the fifth time in a row (being
nominated) and this time is very
special."
Toure, who has scored 13 goals for club
and country this year, was the choice of
the BBC's global audience.
He held off competition from Pierre-
Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon and
Borussia Dortmund), Victor Moses
(Nigeria and Liverpool, on loan from
Chelsea), John Obi Mikel (Nigeria and
Chelsea), and Jonathan Pitroipa
(Burkina Faso and Rennes).
Toure was presented with the award at
Manchester City's Carrington training
ground on Monday.
"We are pleased for Yaya Toure that he
has finally won the BBC African
Footballer of the Year on his fifth
nomination for the award," said BBC
Africa's current affairs editor Vera
Kwakofi.
"This shows the high esteem in which
he is held by lovers of African football
and the respect the fans have for his
exploits for club and country."
Toure now has the chance to complete
an awards double having been selected
among a 25-man shortlist for the
African Football Confederation (CAF)
African Footballer of the Year for 2013.
In contrast to the BBC award, Toure has
won the CAF equivalent in each of the
last two years and winning it for a third
consecutive year would see him match
the achievement of Cameroon striker
Samuel Eto'o, winner in 2003, 2004 and

The winner of the latest edition is due

ASUU To Parents: Keep Your Children At Home

The Academic Staff Union of
Universities on Sunday advised parents
not to endanger the lives of their
children and wards by sending them to
their university campuses.
ASUU which also told its members not
to sign attendance registers in their
institutions, lashed out at the Federal
Government for lack of consistency in
its statements on the ongoing strike.
The Supervising Minister of Education,
Mr. Nyesom Wike, had at a news
conference in Abuja on Thursday,
warned that any ASUU member that
failed to resume on or before
Wednesday would be sacked.
Wike also directed vice-chancellors to
advertise vacancies (internal and
external) in their institutions.
He told the vice-chancellors to open
attendance registers for lecturers that
resumed in their universities.
The Federal Government then directed
the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji
Mohammed Abubakar, to deploy
policemen in all the federal universities.
On Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan,
who described the strike by the
university teachers as a "subversive
action," added that ASUU had ceased to
be a trade union.
But the Chairman, University of Ibadan
chapter of ASUU, Dr. Segun Ajiboye,
said parents should keep their children
and wards at home as no academic
activity would resume until the five-
month-old strike was called off.
Ajiboye added, "Don't risk the lives of
your children and wards. Keep them at
home because ASUU will not teach.
Soldiers and the police deployed by the
Federal Government will not teach.
Wike can come and teach in the
universities. It is a huge joke to sack
lecturers. Our strike must not be in
vain. Our students must see the results.
"It is funny. We thought we are in a
democracy. I assure Nigerians that we
know what the law says about the
strike. Our job is statue backed. We are
not threatened. "We do not trust the
government. The record of the
government is clear. This government is
dishonouring agreements. Our
members are resolved to pursue this to
a logical conclusion."
Ajiboye also said that the Federal
Government's stance was from a script
that was played out by the military
administration of Ibrahim Babangida in
the 1990s.
He stated, "Dear members, stay calm
and remain resolute. There is nothing
wrong in asking government to do what
it says it will do immediately. ASUU is
not making any new demands as the
supervising minister is propagating.
Government is only repeating a 'one act
play' scripted by the IBB dictatorship in
early 90s. It didn't work then, and, it
won't work now. All branches are intact.
We cannot be intimidated.
"If ASUU could withstand Babangida,
this government cannot threaten us.
We have worked this road before, the
only thing that will work is peaceful
resolution. It is sad that government
wants to sack us because we are asking
for the resolutions. We are ready to be
sacked but government should learn
from the University of Ilorin experience.
We are going to stay the course."
ASUU President, Dr. Nassir Fagge, urged
university teachers on Sunday not to
sign any attendance register.
Fagge, in a message to the UI chapter ,
urged the lecturers to be resolute in
their demands despite the threat of
insecurity to their jobs.
He said, "Comrades, can you see the
unfolding drama? Now Jonathan says
they didn't give ultimatum. That the
vice -chancellors did and Wike became
their trumpet. But NUC's (National
Universities Commission) ultimatum is
by the Federal Government to us to
resume or get sacked.
"Wike's press address says 'FG has
directed' not 'VCs have directed.' Be
calm, stay resolute. By God's grace, we
are on course."
The Chairman, University of Lagos
chapter of the union, Dr. Karol
Ogbinaka, said Jonathan's description of
the strike as a "subversive action," was
unfortunate.
"How can our action be subversive
when we do not have arms and
ammunition? We take exception to that.
We are academics not coup plotters. I
have a feeling he was misquoted. I wish
to deny this on his behalf because it is
an extreme statement," Ogbinaka said.
He also faulted the buck passing on the
directive to reopen universities, saying
it pointed to the fact that the
government was "somersaulting."
According to him, the Federal
Government is now shifting the blame
among the pro-chancellors, Committee
of Vice-Chancellors and Wike.
But the Presidency on Sunday insisted
that those behind the strike were
enemies of the state.
It said this could be the reason why the
ASUU leadership refused to call off the
strike even when 42 out of its 61
chapters voted against its continuation.
The Senior Special Assistant to
President Goodluck Jonathan on Public
Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated these at
a news conference in Abuja on Sunday.
He wondered why the leadership of the
union also refused to call off the strike
even after its 13-hour meeting with the
President.

Pastor Chris Okotie’s Bombshell: Why Catholics Will Go to Hell

Fifty-five year old Okotie, while
preaching in his Household of God
Church in Ikeja area of Lagos on
Sunday, said the Catholic church is
"a
counterfeit church set up by
Satan" and that Catholics "bow to
idols and crucify Jesus every
Sunday when they eat bread
claiming they are eating Jesus'
body."
Pastor Okotie stressed: "They are
not Christians and have never
been."
"They don't know Jesus. They
believe that when they eat bread
on Sundays, they are eating the
body of Jesus. It's ritual," he told
his stunned congregation.
According to PM News, Okotie said
Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who
does the job of the devil and that
time is fast approaching when the
Catholic church will pledge
allegiance to Satan.
"The pope is an Anti-Christ and
the Catholic church will soon
declare for Satan. This is the end
of times," Okotie erupted.
He advised members of his church
to come to the rescue of Catholics
and evangelise them. This, he
said, was not out of disrespect but
out of respect for the word of God.
He said those who know the truth
should bring it to those who do not
know it in the Catholic Church.
Okotie said one of the Catholic
most revered Popes, Pope John
Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic
Church to Mary, the earthly
mother of Jesus Christ, instead of
Jesus himself. He said even the
current Pope Francis has also done
same.
He said Catholics are not
Christians and do not worship the
same Christ that he preaches in
his church, at least the one spoken
about in the
Bible.
Okotie said he did not write the
Bible but it was clear to him that
those in the Catholic church were
lost and were heading to hell fire.
"That church, the Catholic church
has been there for Satan and at
the right time, they will declare for
Satan," Okotie said.
Okotie who has been married
twice and divorced also twice said
a beauty pageant will take place in
his church next Sunday to select
the most beautiful woman in his
church.
He also said that Nigeria's famous
preacher Prophet T.B. Joshua is the
son of the devil and his followers
will go straight to hell.
But funny enough, in recent years,
the same Pastor Okotie has been
saying that God has anointed him
to be the President of Nigeria. That
prophecy has not come to pass in
2 presidential elections that he
participated in.

Late Paul Walker's friend and Fast &
Furious co-star Tyrese visited the scene
of the car crash today and was
inconsolable. The actor and singer, who
has been friends with Paul for the past
thirteen years cried through out. He left
a single yellow rose at the scene of the
crash before leaving.
Paul Walker, 40, was the passenger in
his friend's Porsche GT which spun out
of control and hit a pole and tree,
bursting into flames and killing both
men yesterday afternoon November
30th.
TMZ reported earlier today that the
county coroner revealed that the bodies
of Walker and his friend Roger Rodas,
38, who was also his financial adviser,
were so badly burned that they are
currently unidentifiable.
The L.A. County Coroner has requested
dental records for both victims before
they can identify the bodies. Autopsies
on both bodies have been delayed until
later this week. Too sad!

Mongolia are the two most corrupt
countries in the world, according to a
recent study. In both countries, 86% of
residents believe corruption in the
public sector is a very serious problem.
Residents in the vast majority of
countries around the world believe
corruption has only gotten worse in the
past two years.
Anti-corruption nonprofit Transparency
International has released its 2013
Global Corruption Barometer, which
surveyed residents in 107 countries.
The world's corrupt nations differ in
many ways. Four are located in Africa,
three in Latin America and two in Asia.
These nations also vary considerably in
size and population. Mongolia has just
3.2 million residents, while Mexico,
Nigeria and Russia are three of the
largest countries on the globe, each
with more than 100 million people.
Based on the percentage of surveyed
residents that reported corruption in
the public sector is a very serious
problem, these are the world's most
corrupt nations.

In September 2011, Zambia held
elections that resulted in the election of
President Michael Sata. Since Sata's
victory, several officials from the past
administration, including former
President Rupiah Banda, have been
arrested for corruption. Complicating
matters, many of the corruption
allegations relate to government
officials receiving improper benefits
from Chinese investors, who are
unpopular in much of the country yet
provide direct investment and jobs.
Zambia's residents are poor, with an
estimated GDP per capita of just $1,722
in 2012, versus nearly $50,000 in the
United States. An extremely high 85%
of residents claimed they had been
asked to pay a bribe in the past.

In Nigeria, 84% of those surveyed by
Transparency International claimed
corruption had increased in the past
two years, a higher percentage than
almost any other country in the world.
Troublingly, 75% of those surveyed also
said the government was, at best,
ineffective at fighting corruption, worse
than in all but 10 countries. Nigeria is
heavily dependent on the oil industry,
yet the government refuses to act on
accusations the oil companies
underreporting the value of the
resources they extract and the tax they
owe by billions of dollars. Certain
transparency groups also blamed
politicians for encouraging corruption.
In 2012, Nigeria had just the 37th
largest GDP in the world, despite having
the world's seventh largest population.
7. Russia

According to 82% of individuals
surveyed, it is important to have
personal contacts to get anything done
in Russia's public sector. Additionally,
85% of Russians stated the government
was run by just a few large entities for
their own best interests. The only two
other countries where residents were
more likely to feel this way were
Lebanon and Cyprus. The latter was
known until recently as a haven for
Russian oligarchs' money. These hyper-
wealthy individuals often have close
political ties, which allowed many to
become wealthy during Russia's post-
Soviet privatization.
6. Paraguay

In few nations were personal
connections considered to be more
important than in Paraguay. As many as
88% of the country's residents said
such contacts were important in getting
things done within the public sector, a
higher proportion than all but two other
countries worldwide. This was also the
reasoning behind the majority of bribes,
with 63% of all such payments going
toward speeding up a service. Worse,
78% of residents noted that their
government had been either ineffective
or very ineffective at fighting
corruption, one of the highest
proportions worldwide.
5. Mexico

Globally, 53% of individuals surveyed
by Transparency International claimed
that corruption had risen in the past
two years. However, in Mexico, that
figure was 71% as the country's citizens
have become less tolerant of corruption.
In addition, 72% of those polled stated
the Mexican government was
ineffective in fighting corruption, while
78% claimed that having personal
contacts was either important or very
important in getting the public sector to
be helpful. Last year, the Institutional
Revolutionary Party (PRI) won elections
nationwide to return to power despite
previous allegations of heavy
corruption. In a July 2012 article, Time
magazine described corruption as "the
stubborn remnant of the PRI's seven
decades of authoritarian rule that is at
the heart of the drug lords' ability to
operate in Mexico."
4. Zimbabwe

Roughly 77% of those surveyed claimed
that corruption in Zimbabwe had risen
in the past two years, a higher
percentage than in all but a few other
countries. Potentially contributing to
this rise, longtime President Robert
Mugabe failed to keep past elections
free from violence and voting
irregularities. Mugabe's opponent is
likely far more popular with the people,
but the upcoming elections on July 31
could still end up rigged in the
Mugabe's favor. More than three-
quarters of residents stated that the
government was run largely or entirely
by a few entities acting in their own
best interests.
3. Venezuela

Venezuela's long-ruling socialist
president, Hugo Chavez, passed away
in March. Corruption was a concern in
Venezuela since before Chavez's first
election victory in 1998. His chosen
successor, Nicolas Maduro, has vowed
to end corruption, which has often been
associated with Venezuela's socialist
government. Before April's presidential
election, opposition candidate Henrique
Capriles claimed that nationalization of
private businesses allowed public
officials to control major industries for
personal profit. In Venezuela, 79% of
respondents said their nation's political
officials were corrupt, among the
highest percentages in the world.

Mongolia had one of the world's fastest
growing economies in 2012, when its
GDP rose an estimated 12.3%,
according to the IMF. But corruption has
been identified by USAID as a critical
threat to the country's continued
growth as well as to its democracy.
Corruption has become pervasive in the
country, after "rapid transition to
democracy and a market economy
created huge demands on bureaucracy
that lacks the [means] to prevent
corruption," according to the
organization. Encouragingly, less than
half of all people surveyed in the
country said that corruption had
increased in the past two years, versus
53% of respondents worldwide. Also,
while 77% of people considered public
officials to be corrupt, just 12%
believed the country's government to
be run by a few large, purely self-
interested entities.

was corrupt, also the highest

had paid a bribe to secure some service,
trailing only Sierra Leone. In all, 80% of
the population had at one point been
asked to pay a bribe. Recently,
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf fired the
country's auditor general for corruption.

ESUT, UNN reopen Monday

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
, and the Enugu State University of
Science and Technology ( ESUT), said
their academic activities would resume
on Monday 2 December, two days
ahead of the 4 December deadline
given by the Federal Government to
university vice-chancellors to reopen
their universities. Academic staff who
have been on strike since 1 July were
also told to back to work before the
deadline or consider themselves
sacked.
Both ESUT and UNN made the
announcement about the resumption in
separate statements today.
The Registrar of the UNN, Mr Anthony
Okonta, in the statement, stressed that
"normal academic activities would
resume immediately.''

The statement directed students who
had outstanding examinations for the
2012/2013 session to report to their
respective faculties and departments in
Nsukka and Enugu campuses.
The ESUT Registrar, Mr Chris Igbokwe,
also advised students and academic
and non- academic staff to report to the
institution on 2 December.
According to the statement, students
are advised to return to their campuses
at Agbani and Enugu campuses as the
second semester examination would
commence on Monday, 9 December.
The Federal Government had on
Thursday, directed all federal
universities to resume work on or
before Dec. 4.
The statement, issued by the
Supervising Minister of Education, Mr
Nyesom Wike, directed the striking
members of ASUU, to resume work on
or before 4 December or consider
themselves sacked.

Saheed drags ex wife Fathia to court over name

Few years ago, Saheed Balogun
reportedly said he would soon stop his
ex wife, Fathia Balogun, from using his
name.
Saheed was quoted to have said "She is
my ex. As for my name that she is still
answering, the deed will be done soon.
The Nigerian law says that after three or
four years, you can do something about
it. If somebody wants to keep my name,
what of the new person coming in? This
has nothing to do with grudges."
And now, it looks as if Saheed is set to
do something about his threat.

court insisting that she drop his name.
Recall also that Fathia had also
reportedly boasted in an interview last
year, that nobody could stop her from

Goodluck the only president talking about development – Chief Nwosu

As a strong believer in the unity of
Nigeria Chief Nwosu maintains in this
interview that Nigeria has the capability
to compete favourably with developed
countries of the world if only she
expands her resource base.
He also, speaks about his new book,
"Leadership & Developmental Issues in
Nigeria: A Search for Development
Strategies". Excerpts
Why delve into development
issues?
I have considered the way Nigeria is
going and I thought she needs to grow
and develop. But while I was in the
public service, I couldn't make
comments on issues concerning
leadership in the country but I secretly
wrote articles which were published in
The Guardian, for instance, "Why the
Military Intrude in African Politics",
published in 1978.
I retired voluntarily from the Customs
and began thinking of how to write a
book that will encapsulate all my ideas
about leadership, growth and
development. By that, I tried in my
book,"Leadership & Developmental
Issues in Nigeria: A Search for
Development Strategies", to make a
distinction between growth and
development. Growth is simply
economic expansion where you produce
and people consume and it does not
translate to development. But
development is when Political
Leadership begin thinking in terms of
how to bridge the gap, that is
technological gap between us and
developed countries of the world.
This is done by building infrastructures,
mass transit fares to move people,
building aeroplanes, why can't we build
our own automobiles and automobile
parts and couple them in this country
and then sell to other countries? We
need industrialisation, technological
acquisition, development and adapting,
etc , these are ingredients for
development.
It is surprising that people say no we
can't develop that way but if you look at
developed countries of the world, they
are the most advanced in terms of
technology, they are the richest, and so,
Nigeria cannot continue to depend on
only one natural resource; selling of oil
and all that, otherwise, why are we
always broke? The answer is simply
because the profit or whatever money
we make from oil sales is not enough to
run the affairs of this country.
That is why we run borrowing from time
to time. We need to expand our
resource base, by industrialisation,
manufacturing and exporting,
producing food in abundance for
everybody then put prices down,
develop housing for people and when
you give them transportation in
addition to low cost housing, you don't
need to pay big money as salary
because they have transport and other
amenities.
Nigeria's level of development?
I will limit myself to this present
administration. It appears that because
President Jonathan is educated and
also, a science person, it seems to me
that for the first in the history of
Nigeria, we have someone who is
thinking about development. Jonathan
is such a leader, apart from Late
Yar'Adua who would have been such a
person but death stopped him too early.
But Jonathan stepped into his shoes
and seems to have gone further than
expectation as far as I am concerned. I
am speaking for myself. Jonathan is
talking about development, launching
of satellite, building our own
automobiles and all that because he is
the kind of president that has
development agenda for the nation.
Objective of the book?
My book is to create awareness and
arouse in the minds of political leaders
the need to bridge development,
technological and industrial gap
between us and advanced countries of
the world. Other countries will not take
us serious if we don't begin to put
necessary infrastructure in place, for
the nation's development.
Once again, Nigeria needs to grow and
develop and that is why I have in my
book, documented all the indices of
development which have been lacking
in the governance of Nigeria
How can Nigeria win the war
against corruption?
First and foremost, the presidential
system of Governance should be
dropped because it is not conducive for
Nigerian polity. Parliamentary system
which will keep leaders on their toes is
best because there will be no room for
corruption. What we have at the
moment is a situation whereby the
executive, judiciary and legislature are
busy chasing their personal agenda
because the presidential system does
not check them properly. All these are
documented in my book for reference
purpose.

Teen Remanded For Insulting Gombe Governor On Facebook

using abusive words against the
governor on Facebook.
The Prosecutor, Sardauna Wukuma, told
the court at a resumed hearing that the
police were still investigating the
matter. He further applied for
adjournment to enable the police to
complete investigations on the matter.
According to the Prosecutor, the offence
was contrary to the Penal Code Law of
Gombe State.
The Pantami Magistrates' Court in
Gombe State remanded Abdullahi at
the Gombe prisons after he pleaded
guilty to the charge before the court on
November 27, 2013, Wednesday.
The case has been adjourned till
December 12, 2013, for sentencing…

Abiodun Sofuyi Okeowo, also known as
"Tolani Osirin" is a well-known name in
the Yoruba genre of Nollywood, the
Nigerian movie industry. A single
mother of two, Abiodun is barely seven
years in the industry. But she is already
a known face with her scintillating
performances. Reputed to have one of
the sexiest shapes in the industry, this
Lagos State University graduate of
Communication Arts who is known for
her calmness, has also produced many
films on her own. She spoke with
MURPHY AJIBADE
Excerpts:
Tell us when, where and how you
joined the movie industry?
I started with the Ray Eyiwunmi
Organisation. It is a group consisting of
Lasun Ray, Muka Ray, and Murphy Ray.
I started February 2006. I joined the
group and became like an apprentice
learning from them. I produced my own
first movie in 2007. It was entitled
Tolani Osinrin.
What prompted you go into acting?
For me, acting is inborn. My dad used to
be in the Awarawa theatre group with
the likes of Jide Kosoko and others.
When I was in primary school, we used
to practice acting. Not long ago, when
some of my classmates saw me, they
were like 'O, Abiodun so you finally
became an actress'. So it is something
that I grew up with.
Since you joined the industry how
many movies have you featured in?
I have lost count… I'm sure it is about
50 or more.
Tell us some of them?
I produced five myself, Tolani Osinrin,
Okanjua, Oke-irapada, Asise Nla and
Edidi Igbeyawo. I have featured in Lagos
to Benin, Uncle Adisa, Opin-Irin ajo,
Ohun Buruku, Aso tuntun, Boseyemi,
Temiyemi by Bimbo Oshin, Taloye… I
have lost count
Which one of them do you think
propelled you to stardom?
I will say here that Tolani Osinrin, my
first production. It shot me into
limelight. All along, I had been featuring
in two scenes, three scenes. But when I
did Tolani Osinrin, the name got stuck
with me, and people were asking 'who
is this Tolani girl?' and so the name
went a long way before my face
registered on people's minds, so Tolani
Osinrin did.
Tell us about yourself?
My name is Abiodun Sofuyi, I am the
last born in a family of five of which I
am the only girl. My mother is a trader,
my father is a prophet. I hail from Ogere
in Ogun State. I attended Onayade
Primary school, from there to Jibowu
High School from where I proceeded to
Lagos State University(LASU) where I
studied Communication Arts. I did my
Industrial Training at Lagos Television
(LTV) before I started acting.
Most challenging role?
I am yet to see a very challenging role,
but right now I will give it to Aso
Tuntun. Because in the movie, I had to
run seriously and because of my plumy
stature it was difficult for me to run. I
am not that slim and could not roll
freely, but because am an actress I just
had to do it. But I will still say my best
is yet to come, I have not been
challenged the way I really want.
Have you ever been sexually
harassed to get a role?
No, because I came in through the right
channel where we are not allowed to go
to location without the guidance of our
Oga (boss). By the time I started going
to locations, I was already a producer
and a known face, so it never happened
to me.
What kind of clothes do you love?
I love bump shorts a lot.
Favorite perfume?
I love praga and gucci
Favorite colours?
I love flashy colours, I love facial pink,
yellow, and blue
Who is your role model in the
Nigeria movie industry?
I love Bukky Wright, Joke Silva, Fathia
Balogun, Shola Shobowale
Most embarrassing moment on
set?
It was between me and Lasun Ray, I was
acting as a nurse in the movie and
instead of facing the camera, I was
backing it at that point he had to scold
me and I was crying because I was not
used to the system at that time. I felt
they were insulting publicly. But along
the line, I realized that is how the
industry is, because for you to be good,
you have to be scolded and corrected. I
later played the part in the movie and
when the film came out, I appreciated
the scolding because I later performed
well.
Most embarrassing moment with
fans?
I was trekking on the street and I saw
three ladies coming towards my
direction, two of the ladies recoginsed
me and and were friendly, and one said
"Oh, see Tolani Osinrin" and they were
coming towards me to greet me. But
the third one wasn't friendly, as she
said "who is Tolani Osinrin?" She just
drew the other two back and said
"come on, let's go". I was so
embarrassed.
Do you play romantic roles?
Sure
How far can you go?
As far as going acting dirty, because my
children are going to watch my movie
How do you cope with your
responsibility as a single mother,
and an actress?
Here, I will give it to my mother, she is a
very caring, loving mother, she takes
care of my children when am not
around.
How did you meet the father of
your children?
We met in church.
What is the craziest thing a man
has ever said to you?
Let me just say it the way he said it,
"this your hips go kill person
o" (Laughs).
Tell us someone you admire and will
like to meet.
Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva. Actually, Olu
Jacobs featured in Opin Irinajo (Part 1),
but then it was in Part 2 that I featured
because that was when I joined the
Lasun Eyiwunmi group. So I never had
the opportunity of meeting him.
How do you spend your leisure?
I am a homely person, I stay at home
and watch movies, then take my kids
out.
Apart from acting, what else do
you do?
Presently, nothing. But am planning to
go into business very soon.
What sort of business?
I am planning to go into clothing and
jewelries.
What is the most treasured thing
we will find in your wardrobe?
That should be my hymn book and my
bible.
If you are opportuned to change
something what would you like to
change about yourself?
I would like to have a full neck…
(laughs) and a bolder face
There has been instances when
marketers fail to pay movie
producers due to one reason or the
other. What has been your
experience?
I will just sat that God should come to
our aid, I wouldn't say it is 100% the
fault of the marketers. I belive it is the
economy generally. Let's take for
instance, I am a baker , I bought flour
and baked my bread let's assume I
baked 100 and out of the hundred
baked I sold just 50, so how do I cover
for the money I used to purchase flour?
So, I think it is the same thing that is
happening in the movie industry,
because the economy is very bad, if a
marketer prints 10,000 copies, and he
is unfortunate that he was unable to
sell more than 3,000 copies and he has
7,000 copies left there is no way he is
going to pay the producer. But you may
not know this if you are not close to
them to hear from the horses mouth.
Everyone of us blame them for owing
us, although there are some of them
that are born debtors. But for some it is
just due to circumstances and the
economy, that is why we are begging
the government to come to our aid
In the space of five years you have
been able to produce 6 movies,
how have you been financing your
production?
The first one I got a sponsor for it,
thereafter I became a commercial
actress. And don't eat with my 10
fingers (meaning: I save some of my
income).
What should we expect from you in
the next five years?
Olorun lo ni dede (man proposes God
disposes). I just pray to God that He
should put me where I would love so
much.
Are you working on something
right now?
Not really. I want to take my time, do
my homework well, do more research
and come out with something good, a
better movie than the five I have
produced put together. Of course, am
shooting another movie, I will be on
location on Friday (yesterday). But I
don't know the title yet.
So, how do you rate Nollywood?
I'll give kudos to Nollywood right now
because we are improving technically
and the artists too are improving.
How would you compare
Nollywood and others like
Bollywood and Hollywood?
Well, permit me to say a Yoruba adage
'omo eni ole se'di bebere ka fi'leke sidi
elomi', even if we are not the first, I'll
give us the first. We are the best
anywhere, anytime.
What can you say about
productions that are written,
produced and directed by just one
same person?
Well, let me be sincere, such a practice
is not good. If i write my story, I'm not
going to direct, I will just be an actress,
Shikena…, I will not even be the one to
coordinate. I think there should be
division of labour. Maybe those people
think they are Jacks of all trade, that
they can do it well.
What can you say about the issue
of piracy?
I just pray that God should come to our
rescue. In fact, everybody is trying their
best. The actors, the actresses and so
also the marketers are trying to curb it.
Though it's not easy to curb them at
once but it's been working 'small small'.
All I'm saying is that the government
should come to our rescue. For
example, the last film by Olasco,it was
on DVD so it will not be easy to be
pirated. So, that's why I said if the
government can come to our rescue
then we'll minimize the number of films
coming out. If an actor/actress feature
in a film or two in a year, we'll be okay.
It will cover up 50 movies in a year, so,
they should just help.
How do you think government can
help?
For example, football is a kind of
entertainment, right? And government
is investing in it. If they can do the
same thing in the movie industry, like
calling the leaders asking them how
they can help them. They can give them
certain amount of money and tell them
they should shoot less movies in a year,
and also make sure that all the artists,
the crews featuring in such movies get
substantial amounts. They should just
come to our rescue.
How is your relationship with the
father of your kids?
Its okay, very cordial. We talk when it's
necessary.
So, as a producer, how do you get
your inspiration?
I get inspiration from things happening
around me, and at times it is just
'aroko' (fallacy).
What is your advice for the
upcoming ones?
Uhmm…, I 'll say here that they should
be determined. They should not come
into the industry with the aim of dating
an actor or any producer or better still a
star to make it. They should be ready to
tolerate, they should have the spirit of
perseverance and they should be
extremely humble. That's all. That is
the major thing, humility.
How will you describe your
personality?
Ha…, I'm kogbona kotutu (not too hot,
not too cold) (laughs)…, Let me be
serious. I'm an introvert, 60% of me is
an introvert and 40% of me is an
extrovert. 60% temperamental, 40%
calm. I don't keep grudges, I'm a kind of
person that when you offend me you
will see it immediately that I'm angry,
then after some minutes it's gone. I
don't keep malice. Even, if the person is
planning to hold grudges I will go and
meet the person. I'm like that.

Keshi To Lead Nigeria At World Cup - Sports

ASUU STRIKE LATEST: The Federal
Government today gave the Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, one
week ultimatum to call off the ongoing
strike.
The acting Minister of Education, Nyesom
Wike, stated this while briefing
journalists in Abuja.
ASUU has been on a nationwide strike
since July 1, demanding the government
implements a 2009 agreement it had
with the union.
The lecturers had last week, at the end of
the ASUU NEC meeting, resolved to take
a definite position on the government's
offer and the strike after meeting
President Goodluck Jonathan this week.
The meeting is yet to hold.

News: Army kills 40 Boko Haram suspects in Borno

Over 40 suspected Boko Haram
members were killed in an offensive by
the military, which raided its identified
cells using air strikes and ground
troops from the 7 Division, Nigerian
Army, in Bita village, Damboa-Gwoza
road in Borno State. Two weeks ago, no
fewer than 20 suspected terrorists
were reportedly killed by troops from
the same Division in the area, while
several others escaped during a similar
raid in one of the Boko Haram hideouts
as confirmed to journalists by the
Division's spokesman, Colonel
Mohammed Dole. Bita, which is 32
kilometres west of Gwoza town is about
135 kilometres away from Maiduguri,
the state capital and it is alleged to be
one of the strongholds of the Boko
Haram insurgents. The area has
witnessed series of attacks and killings,
with the bombing of public schools, a
new generation bank and road attacks
in recent times by the insurgents.
Reliable security sources revealed that
the military raid of Boko Haram
hideouts in Bita took place on Sunday
and Monday, adding that it was aimed
at flushing out the insurgents who
were suspected to have fled the recent
attacks by the troops, and taken refuge
in bushes on the Sambisa Game
Forests. During a routine visit last week
by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen.
Azubuike Ihe-rijika to Maiduguri, he
challenged military officers to be
steadfast, as there would be what he
described "as total war and destruction
of Boko Haram camps in the state this
week." The source, however, said: "The
recent attacks launched by the troops
from the Division beginning from this
week was a huge success, as one of the
strongholds of the terrorists were
destroyed with the killing of
unspecified number of suspected Boko
Haram insurgents." The military
authorities in Maiduguri could not be
reached on telephone from Maiduguri
as there were no communication
networks in Borno State due to the
state of emergency declared in some
northern states.
