In case you have overlooked this short announcement from the Twitter blog, the next time you check your following and follower page on your Twitter account don’t be surprised to see some minor changes in the way those pages appear, along with some new features.

Alright to be honest I think I’ve checked these pages just once or twice as most of the time when I receive new followers update through email, I simply click on the followers’ profiles and decide whether to follow them or not.

But what I really like about the redesign of the pages is the additional features that came with it. When you visit any of the two pages, you can now do several things while scanning the list. Here are the things you can do at those pages:

Expand or Collapse the list view

Add or invite more followers

Unfollow Twitter members

Mention Twitter members

Send direct messages

Block Twitter members

In addition to these features, another great thing is the fact that you can now view the accounts of people that you’re Twitter contact is following even if you are not following them.

Such simple features are certainly much needed to make Tweetering a more pleasant and hassle-free experience. No wonder, Twitter’s popularity is continously growing.

Are you using Friendfeed? I hope you do. It’s the next best thing to using Twitter and Facebook for sharing and communicating with your online contacts. In fact, Friendfeed loyalists might even say that Friendfeed is better than both Facebook and Twitter. But that depends on individual preferences though. Anyway Friendfeed has just added several themes to make your profile livelier. There are actually six new themes which you can choose to use on your profile. Make that a total of seven if you can the default Friendfeed theme. All six new themes were carefull designed by Friendfeed developers, making sure that it captures the diversity of Friendfeed users’ tastes.

Applying new themes won’t affect your Friendfeed’s main stream areas. It will maintain its original white background. This blends well with some of the themes while at the same won’t look good with the other themes. So, use your best judgement as to which theme suits your taste.

Friendfeed has also clarified some issues that might come up regarding these new themes. One, is that the themes you choose for your profile will not be visible to your contacts. Your profile will be displayed at their end with the theme they used on their own profiles. And two, unlike Twitter wherein you can upload your own picture and use it a s your profile’s theme, Friendfeed has not enabled this feature yet. But it’s in the roadmap says the Friendfeed folks.

So, which of the six themes did you use on your Friendfeed profile? If you want to add me on your Friendfeed contacts, feel free to do and would gladly add you in mine. http://friendfeed.com/aczafra.

YouTube, Hulu and other video streaming sites will soon face a tough competitor, and it goes by the name <a href="YouTube, Hulu and other video streaming sites will soon face a tough competitor, and it goes by the name VideoBay. If that sounds awfully familiar to you, yes you guessed it right, it’s from the same people who brought us the ever controversial PirateBay.

So, with that in mind, VideoBay is practically PirateBay for videos. As such it aims to offer us, online video hungry individuals with pirated TV shows and Hollywood movies in all their HD glory. And that goes without saying that it will be a hazzle-free experience right on our web browsers.

VideoBay is currently in development stage. The current status of the site makes no promises of working properly or working fine without bugs. In fact a short note on the site says - Don’t expect anything to work at all. Statements like that coming from the site developers/owners could certainly spell doom for competitors such as YouTube and Hulu. As this only goes to show how VideoBay is taking on the online video niche. And that is unstructured, unorthodox manner. Basing this on experience, we all know how YouTube started.

Incidentally, if you care to know, VideoBay is exploring the possibility of using the HTML5 features, more particularly the <video> and <audio> tag as it embarks on an experimental journey on coming up with an alternative video streaming/wathing/downloading site.

Will VideoBay repeat what YouTube was able to accomplish? Only time will tell. But of course, expect a few legal hurdles here and there as VideoBay prepares to gear up for battle.

When we talk about online video, YouTube always comes into our mind first. But the truth is, there are other video sites out there which may not be offering video uploads but could be a great source of finding video contents scattered all around the Internet. One such service is the seemingly underrated video search portal - Truveo. For those who are unfamiliar with Truveo, it’s AOL’s video search platform which could easily be the second largest video search engine worldwide, and in the U.S. The numbers say so - 25.6 million unique visitors monthly worldwide and 5.1 million unique visitors in the U.S.

To beef up its video search service some more, Truveo is introducing some more cool features, that is aside from the fact that it is now available in 16 localized versions internationally.

Here are some of the new features of Truveo:

more than 350 million online videos

cleaner, redesigned homepage with improved search, browsing functionality and upgraded loading times

more personalized control over search including Navigation that lets users browse their searches by channel, category, show, popularity and most followed on Twitter.

a new page dedicated to TV show listings found on the Web lets users browse for shows alphabetically or by network

new tools let users save and send their favorite videos and search terms to friends and share them on Bebo, Facebook, MySpace and StumbleUpon.

The European Union is set to implement some operating guidelines for companies and their social networking sites including Facebook, MySpace and others. The new regulation is aimed at ensuring that companies who operate these social networks comply with privacy laws. More particularly, the EU would like to ensure that these sites do not use and distribute personal information divulged by individuals without consent.

What is it with government agencies and online social media? I mean is the online world replacing the real society that government agencies are disturb that the world will now revolve in the virtual space and that they are not prepared for this kind of change?

A few days ago, the FTC announced that it will be scrutinizing paid bloggers and their work to ensure that they’ve fully closed that they are being paid for writing consumer product reviews on their blogs.

And now, it’s the EU’s turn to crack down on social networks. Interestingly, the regulation with not apply to social network companies in the EU countries but also those companies who operates internationally but have members located in the EU countries.

One couldn’t help but wonder right now as to who or which will be the next target of a government agency.
