According to a new study by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Company, the popularity of the Windows Phone operating system in Europe is gradually growing; in anticipation of the release the Windows Phone 8, the mobile platform from Microsoft is fighting with RIM’s BlackBerry for third place in marketshare.

At the same time, both of these systems are properly behind the market leaders, iOS and Android operating systems. Kantar notes that the Windows Phones based smartphones, such as the Nokia Lumia 610, have suddenly become rather popular in the markets of European countries, especially in Italy and France.

It also should be noted that the share of Android and iOS together in Europe accounts for about 83 percent of the whole smartphone market. The data is from the five largest European markets – the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. In the U.S., the share of Android and iOS is even higher – 93 percent.

In the report, the company said that while Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS captured the lion’s share of the market and in the near future they are not likely to yield the positions, the shares of BlackBerry and Windows Phone began to grow in Europe.

In fact, now users’ attention to Windows Phone is even higher than in time of the release of this OS. According to Dominic Sunnebo, the research director of the consumer market, it is likely that Windows Phone, especially after the eight version releases, is expected to bypass RIM’s BlackBerry in popularity in Europe till the end of this year.

In the third quarter of 2012 the marketshare of Windows Phone has reached 5 percent (based on analysis of the five largest European markets), while the previous year the share of this mobile operating system was only 3.8 percent. For comparison, RIM now holds 6.4 percent of shares versus 12 percent that it had last year.

In the U.S. the share of Windows Phone is about 2.7 percent versus 1.7 percent that goes for BlackBerry.

Android, meanwhile, has showed a significant annual growth in Europe over the past year. The share of the Google’s Android OS grew by 20 percent to 69 percent for the year, while iOS has lost 4.3 percent over the year. In the U.S., the share of Android is accounted for 60 percent of sales, compared to 34 percent for iOS.

So, as you can see, the main battles are held between iOS and Android for the 1st place and between Windows Phone and Blackberry for the 3rd. However, it should be noted, that for RIM’s Blackberry it might be the last battle as if it loses the fight, it will have to leave the ring.

The update was rolled out today by Twitter on the web version. Although there isn’t anything ‘so’ special about this update. It basically allows you to upload header image on Twitter Web and adds another tab in the navigation bar named ‘Me’, which apparently links to your Twitter profile.

However like Facebook & Google+ you need an image with a minimum resolution or dimension of 1252 x 626 pixels (px). Also your new Twitter header image should be less than 5 mb, in size.

Twitter has also repositioned the main box (which contained the Twitter handle, bio, links, follow/unfollow and other elements). Now the header image acts as a background image above which your profile picture (or DP, as commonly known on Twitter), bio, etc are center-aligned.

It is very easy to assign a header image for your Twitter profile. So we will quickly take a look at the steps to do the same.

1. Log in to Twitter. In the main navigation bar click the gear icon (settings). In the dropdown menu select Settings.

App Updates for iPad, iPhone & Android

I’m not doing a complete review or analysis of the changes brought in the official Twitter apps of each of these three platforms – iPad, iPhone and Android.

So I will just list out some of the key changes made in these official Twitter apps.

• New profile pages with header image and improved positioning (as explained in the above paragraph, center-aligned).
• Photo Streams are navigable to left and right by the swipe feature. You just need to swipe either left or right to view different images in a photo stream. This is a notable feature, so good of Twitter.
• Also, the pinch-to-zoom feature has been introduced in the photo streams. Pinch-to-zoom will make it easier for device owners to zoom in to any photo available on the stream or Twitter timeline.
• Twitter for iPad has a similar interface as that of the Twitter web. Instead of the horizontal navigation bar, it has a vertical one with identical features & UI.

A primary domain name is basically the domain name you choose while registering with any hosting plan on HostGator. Either you must’ve transferred the domain from another domain registrar, registered a new domain on HostGator or simply changed the nameservers (NS) of your domain.

Previously, I think we needed to contact HostGator via email to change the primary domain. From now on you don’t need to do that as well.

So lets take a look at some simple steps by which you can easily change the primary domain associated with your HostGator account.

1. Log in to your HostGator account using the cPanel login details.
2. Go to Backups > Backup/Download Full Account Backup. Click and generate a full backup including the home directory, sub-domains, SQL database backup, etc. (just to be on the safer side and avoid data loss). HostGator does offer full restore in case of data loss, but still.
3. Now open the File Manager in cPanel and create a new folder named after the old domain (lets consider, olddomainname.com). Move the root files (i.e. files belonging to olddomainname.com only, not the other sub-domain or addon domain folders) from /public_html to /public_html/olddomainname.com.
4. See now we have two situations, first : assigning a addon domain as a primary domain or adding a new domain to the account as an addon domain and making that as the primary domain.
5. If you had previously added a domain as an addon domain (lets consider, newdomainname.com) then you just need to move the files from /public_html/newdomainname.com folder to /public_html (i.e. the root directory of the HostGator account).
6. In case you just bought a new domain name or transferred your blog and want to use that as the primary domain in HostGator, then you’ve to just upload the files directly in /public_html directory.
7. Log in to HostGator Billing tool or client area. Navigate to Hosting Packages  > View Hosting Packages. Click on the package > Change My Domain.
8. Finally re-add the olddomainname.com as an addon domain to avoid downtime.

Dedicated hosting account holders still have to contact HostGator personally via email or live chat option to change the primary domain name associated with their accounts. The above mentioned steps are only for Shared and Reseller account holders.

Ensure you keep calm while changing domains, a single mistake can bring multiple sites on the HostGator account down.
