It seems there was a curious reporter in Atlanta that bought and tested several beers from different sporting venues around his city, only to find that the beer was far below its advertised ABV. Federal regulations allow for a .3% variation in ABV, but the results were finding far greater discrepancies. Some times as much as 2 full percent of difference. Makes you wonder if the same is true of other states’ venues.

The spokesman says it can be pronounced Like idea, but that it can also be pronounced like media. However you say it, its an awesome idea. It can be programmed with up to 6 different phrases, each with around 300 different characters. And they can be reprogrammed on the fly by anyone. I can think of so many fun ways to use a bottle with a scrolling LED in it! The obvious “Happy Birthday” shown in the little video, congrats to couples getting married, even at a company party with the name of the company scrolling through the bottle. Now to find out if they’re being sold in Ks.

Today marks the 5th month we have been trying and recommending brews. 85 Brews have been tasted and quite frankly very surprised with the quality of many of them. Granted there have been a few that were bad. We do not like to call any beer a bad beer but some of these were just terrible. It has been quite the fun ride thus far and we hope to keep going as long as we possibly can. Overall our strategy on how we have been picking brews has been rather random. We pretty much walk into the store and start looking for names and bottles that catch our eye. I suppose there is a more scientific way to choose the brews, but hey we never said we were professionals right!?

Cheers.

Yes, that’s right, they have made fried beer. This Labor Day at the Texas State Fair, Mark Zabel will be presenting his patented new technique for making fried beer. The beer itself, currently Guinness but Zabel is looking at other alternatives, is fried in a pretzel like pocket, that when bitten into the beer pours out.

Stereotypically speaking, when someone mentions a demographic of people who habitually drink large quantities of beer, who do you think of? Nascar watching rednecks? Three hundred pounds of muscle germans? Brits with their outstretched pinkies? Whoever it is, I’ll bet the first on your list is not the Vietnamese. Lo and behold, though, it seems that the love of beer stretches to every nook and cranny of the globe. As this article informed us, VBL Da Nang Ltd., a relatively small brewer from Da Nang, Vietnam, just opened a new production line pushing out 50,000 bottles every hour. That’s a lot of beer! What’s even more impressive is that with just this one upgrade to the brewery they bought from Foster’s three years ago, their total production will almost double.

VBL is a fast growing brewery catering to a fast growing market, so good for them. We read that, in Vietnam, total sales of beer by volume has increased by over 50% in the last five years. It looks like these folks are trying to give us in the States a run for our money. But hey, we say more power to them, competition breeds improvement and motivation. We all know that Americans as a unit don’t like to be bettered or one uped, so maybe we’ll start seeing some higher increases in beer production and sales. So here’s a message to all you brewers out there; you keep makin’ ‘em, we’ll keep drinkin’ ‘em.

Chúc sức khoẻ!

This should make you smile, or cheer, or maybe shed a tear. Remember those miners in Chile who got trapped when the entrance tunnel collapsed? Thirty-three of them, stuck in a cramped, dark place with no food. But get this, when the rescue crews finally bored a hole down to them and established radio contact, guess what they asked for. That’s right, a nice cold brew! And why not? I know i’d be hunkering for some hops if I was stuck down their with them.

Check out the rest of the article for other details. Read the feel good stories. Seriously, there are a lot of people helping out and the families are started to feel better now that they have contact with their loved ones. Of course, in addition to a good cold beer, the rescue crew is sending down neccessities like food, water, toothbrushes, etc., but we know the important stuff is beer, right?

In all seriousness though, this is a horrible tragedy that befell these men, and we hope they remain doing well and get out as soon as possible and reunited with their families. Hang in there, hermanos. With our glasses raised, our hearts go out to you.

¡Salud!

Okay here’s the scoop, for any of you ladies who actually like real beer, and by “real” we mean not light and deluded. According to this article, and a few others, women who drink regular beer are at a higher risk for psoriasis. Now, to be truthful, it’s not the worst thing that can happen to someone, but it’s not a good thing either. Psoriasis is treatable and curable, but it’s still a hassle and not cheap.

Now, the reason for this correlation seems to be the alcohol itself, given that alcohol can have a negative affect on immune responses and psoriasis being an autoimmune disease. Light beer and wine were not associated with increased risk in this study. There are two things to consider though. Light beer has less calories because it has less alcohol, by nature. This would lead to the believe that alcohol is affecting ingredient causing the increase of risk. Wine, however, generally has more alcohol content than most regular beers, but it does not show an increased correlation in women’s risk for psoriasis. We’re not the scientists, we’re just the news bringers, so don’t ask us why this doesn’t make sense. The other major stand-out quality separating regular beer from light beer and wine is the protein content. So now protein is bad too… Watch out all you guys drinking those nasty shakes in the morning!

Now here’s the low down, and our take on it. Nobody drinks beer for their health, just like nobody eats french fries to lose weight. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Moderation is the key to life. Moderate your beer intake, be it a triple distilled double chocolate stout or an MGD 64, and you’ll fall right into line with most of the world on the health scale.

Cheers,
