Red 7, The New Music Perestroika

I was just asked the question "Where does the SXSW Music Festival take place?". The festival occurs in the evening following the SXSW Music Conference on over 80 stages in downtown Austin. These stages are located in clubs, concert halls and on the shores of Lady Bird Lake with capacities ranging from 100 to 25,000 hosting over 1,800 acts.

Today we turn our focus to what started as Austin's principal hardcore room and staple on the Red River stroll, Red 7. Red 7 has since expanded to booking all sorts of music genres, including r&b and hip-hop, evidenced in recent shows by Mayer Hawthorne and Invincible.

You may remember Red 7 as the spot you caught sets by Harlem Shakes, Vivian Girls, or NOFX when in town for SXSW. Next time you're down on the Red River strip, be sure to check out Red 7's newly remodeled Wreck Room for some vintage arcade games, skee ball, air hockey and some of the sickest local DJs cutting it up for free every night. Upcoming shows include SXSW alums Jello Biafra, Japanther!, Tia Carrera, and At All Cost.

YouTube Treats - All The Angels

Have a gander at their SXSW 2009 showcase closer "All the Angels." Another fine offering from the Georgia boys whose thick, heavy sound will enchant you in a disenchanting sort of way.

Am I the only one who thinks singer Hardy Morris sounds like Redd Kross' Steven Macdonald sometimes?

The band are finishing up some dates with The Meat Puppets this week and have dates scheduled in the states through November 7. They're even coming to Austin next month... to Fun Fun Fun Fest before they head off to the UK in December. Mmm, London in December. Dreamy.

Smokey Robinson to Keynote SXSW Music 2010

South By Southwest (SXSW) is thrilled to announce that the legendary Smokey Robinson will deliver the keynote address at their 2010 Music Conference. His address on Thursday, March 18, 2010 will be the centerpiece of SXSW’s four-day Music Conference, which runs Wednesday, March 17 to Saturday, March 20 at the Austin Convention Center.

Smokey Robinson is one of the architects of the "Motown sound" and his voice and songs established the label's profound impact on culture across the globe. Robinson's artistry has been celebrated worldwide, having received Kennedy Center Honors, a membership in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the "UK Special Achievement Award" at the Ivor Novello Awards and The ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Heritage Award. Bob Dylan called Robinson "America's greatest living poet," and his work as an executive at Motown was central in establishing a unique chapter in popular music history.

Robinson continues to forge new trails, mentoring "American Idol" contestants in 2009 and writing and recording new music. When I think about Monofonus Press and that they are based here in Austin, a little smirk always seems to creep up, because I can't help but think about how cool these guys are and they are right here, in our hometown. Monofonus is dedicated to all the arts, not just the music, though they do have quite an impressive list of musicians. And they tie all the arts together in new and refreshing ways. Morgan Coy, Owner of Monofonus, tells us more about it.

So what is Monofonus Press all about?
Monofonus is primarily about multi-media collaboration, an effort best exemplified by our IF Series, in which we ask three artists working in three different mediums to create one unique package. We mainly want to nurture a creative collaborative atmosphere in general. Non-ofonus is a good example of that - it is a glimpse into what's happening musically in Austin. And that led to a bunch of Monofonus bands and Non-ofonus bands going on a summer tour together in a school bus.

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?
Last year during the festival we threw a big old collaborative party, Woolworth's Harsh Realm: a Monofonaissance Affaire. A bunch of local artists and friends got together and made a medieval wonderland, complete with homemade carnie games and a giant cardboard sculpture of a dragon that engulfed the Monofonus warehouse. We served Dragon's blood cocktails in special goblets. Then, at the end of the night there was an impromptu show in the dragon's mouth by the band Snack Truck out of Richmond. In our humble opinion, it was the best party of the festival.

What artists are playing on your iPod the most these days?
Amon Duul II. Sun Araw. Inside Voices, Soft Healer, Indian Jewelry, Secrecy, Neil Young “On the Beach”, Som Imaginario, Shugo Tokumaru, Arthur Russell, Talk Talk

If people were to come to Austin to visit you for a few days, where would you take them to really experience the city?
It depends. If they were nerdy relatives, we'd rent us some segways and go on a guided tour of Congress Avenue, pop in to Little City for coffees and hit up the Hickory Street Bar and Grill for some middle aged blues and sweet tea. If they were douche-baggy jocks who married into the family, we'd usher them on into Mellow Johnny's and rent a bike, cycle across the pedestrian bridge to Chuy's for some 'ritas and queso before heading over to Barton Springs where we'd cut in line at the diving board and do flips. If they were friends looking to move here, we'd go to the store and buy a bunch of booze and invite all our friends over for a potluck barbecue.

This year Interactive, Film, Platinum and Gold registrants can get their badges at the Austin Convention Center starting at 3:00pm on Thursday, March 11th. That’s a day earlier than years past to make your SXSW experience more convenient. For the next seven days registration will open at 9:00am each morning for registrants to get their credentials and ask questions before panels and other fun stuff begins at 9:30am or 10:00am.

That's right y'all, the deadline to submit your showcase application is November 6th. Then we start the invitation process. If you have not already, go to sonicbids.com/sxsw and follow the links to apply.

Sonicbids is the official online submission partner for SXSW 2010. Your Sonicbids EPK allows you to quickly and easily compile all of the info SXSW wants to see about your act - your music, bio, photos and more. If you don't have an EPK yet, don't worry. They'll help you create one as part of your application.

To apply online using Sonicbids, log in to your Sonicbids account and look for SXSW in the Find Gigs section or head to sonicbids.com/sxsw. If you’re not already a member, you can create an account - it’s free for 6 months when you apply to SXSW. The First Five Panels

YouTube Treats - The Return of Dead Confederate

Ah, the return of Dead Confederate to the SXSW Music Bloggy. If you recall, we featured a clip of the band performing "Yer Circus" in June.

Now we're back with yet another song from their bitchin' SXSW performance at Spiro's. "The Rat" made its way onto the US Modern Rock chart and is a dirgey little number fraught with emotion and 80s guitars, both tasty elements, if you ask me.

Anyway, it seems that the 17 year old in all of us should enjoy some of this Georgia badassery. So, without further ado jeunes et fils, "The Rat"...

I sorta feel like I'm back at Theatre Gallery (in Dallas, if you knew it) in 1987 bein' all homeless, feelin' all teen angsty, and wonderin' if the singer is as cute offstage as he is on (but I wasn't a groupie, I swear!!).

The band hits the road again October 21 for some more dates with The Meat Puppets. Check them out if you can.

The SXSW Video Czars are busy editing away so we'll have more excellent musical goodness coming to you VERY SOON. In the meantime, you can hang out at our superfun YouTube channel.

SXSW Interview: Mayer Hawthorne

This past SXSW 2009, on a showcase presented by Wax Poetics, Ubiquity and Stones Throw Records, a bespectacled white kid from Detroit brought a packed Scoot Inn to its collective knees. His falsetto crooning and deep soul grooves harkened the ghosts of Motown, and introduced a new face to the world of groove. SXSW sat down with Mayer Hawthorne to get the scoop on this mysterious new voice.

SXSW: Mayer, you seem to have popped up from out of nowhere. I don’t want to call you an overnight sensation but…

Mayer: Well, I got signed to Stones Throw last November, and the album came out in September, so it hasn’t even been a year. “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” was the first song that I ever wrote. And then when I got signed to Stones Throw, I had only ever written and recorded two songs, that was it, that was all I had. They put those two out on the red heart shaped (vinyl) single and then they were trying to hold off and build some buzz while I recorded the rest of the album. I had to write a whole album and record it, and I did everything myself. I wrote everything myself, played all the instruments, sang everything myself, arranged, produced and recorded everything by myself in my bedroom. You know, it’s a long process. I was lucky enough that the songs kind of kept coming to me.

SXSW: So you were basically messing around with a new sound in your bedroom and realized that you were a deep soul singer? And then you got a deal? I thought labels weren’t handing out deals to undeveloped artists these days.

Mayer: Sort of. At first I was really worried about whether or not I’d be able to come up with a whole album worth of material, but honestly I have songs written for the next album already. It came together really fast. Part of that is being on an indie label and being able to just drop shit as soon as I get it done. The problem with being on a major is it could have been another year before this album even came out.

SXSW: And you say you played all the instruments on this album?

Mayer: Yeah. Drums, bass, electric piano, synthesizers, tambourine, handclaps, electric sitar, bells, and even a glockenspiel. I did all the back up vocals by myself.

SXSW: The album sounds really accomplished, were you trained in all of those instruments?

Mayer: Some of them I don’t really play, I just get by. But bass, guitar, drums and piano, I’ve been playing those forever. My dad taught me to play bass when I was six-years-old. He’s a dope bass player and he still plays bass in a band in Michigan to this day. I took a few drum lessons and a few piano lessons when I was a kid, but I never really stuck with that. It’s more improvisational. I didn’t have a budget or anything. I couldn’t just go and hire a bunch of dope sessions musicians and pay them to be there in the studio, I had to kind of do everything myself.

SXSW: Well you obviously can’t play everything live, what’s the touring band, The County, consist of?

Mayer: Drums, bass, keyboards, guitar and vocals. I’ve got a Micro-Korg that I play a few things on. We do a cover of ELO’s ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ and I use a vocoder. I play tambourine almost every song. I’m really lucky to be able to have all of my favorite musicians in the world in my band. I asked them to be in my band and everybody was like ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ It’s just been incredible. The live shows have been incredible, I’ve never seen a better band out there, they make my job easy. I’ll be touring for the rest of the year to support this album. I’ll be going to Europe after the U.S. tour.

SXSW: Wow, all that just months after your first ever show at SXSW 2009?

Mayer: Yeah, SXSW was our first show as Mayer Hawthorne & the County. We were on the Wax Poetics showcase and it was unbelievable. People really came out to see us, and we had no idea what to expect. We didn’t think anybody knew who we were and it was really incredible. We’ve come a long way since then.

SXSW Stories: Ali Cherry

We find it hard, sometimes, to explain the type of experience people have at SXSW every year. Maybe because we're biased, maybe because we're too close to the event. So it's best if we let those who attend SXSW tell it for us. Today, Ali Cherry of Beaconfire Consulting gives us her story.

"SXSW has been playfully dubbed "spring break for geeks" and having gone this year, I can totally see why. The Interactive conference was a unique opportunity for cross-industry learning among 11,000 web geeks from every area of the web. Booking your hotel is a simple two-step process:

First – browse the list of available hotels to find one that suits your needs. Clicking on a hotel name will open a detailed hotel amenities page describing the hotel category, distance from the Convention Center, internet service, food options, etc.

Second – once you’ve picked the perfect place go to your Shopping Cart and click the green button to book your hotel. It’s that easy! SXSW Recap: The Americana Music Festival & Conference

The Americana Music Festival & Conference, now in its 10th year, engages industry professionals and artists alike via four days of panels and performances in Nashville, Tennessee.

When I arrived I was informed that Fogerty would be playing his entire touring performance at the Mercy Lounge; over 25 songs. It was both an amazing performance and a generous nod to his fans. Then the Awards Show itself was highlighted by great performances by The Flatlanders, Gourds, Belleville Outfit, Reckless Kelly, Raul Malo and, of course, Jim Lauderdale. Other bands whose showcases really impressed throughout the week include: Daddy (featuring Tommy Wommack and Will Kimbrough), Those Darlins, Sarah Borges and on the final night, The Bottle Rockets at full speed and volume. Nice.

Daytime panels were all about the changing landscape of todays' music business, as well as some advice on how to survive it. The big Keynote Interview this year was Roseanne Cash, and she was delightful. The festival showcased a wide range of traditional and contemporary artists that truly represented the scope of Americana music today. In short, The Americana Music Festival delivered on their promise to showcase the creativity and innovation currently taking place within the genre.

With new albums coming from Charlotte Hatherley (Ash, Bat For Lashes), The Orange Peels, Hellsongs, and lots, lots more, Minty Fresh is going to have a lot on its plate in the coming months. But Managing Director, Anthony Musiala, took a break for us to talk a bit about the label and the beautiful city of Chicago.

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?

I was just in Chicago for Lollapalooza and it is hands down my second favorite city in the states (Austin being #1, of course). When I inevitably visit again, what are some places I have to be sure not to miss?

1. The Chicago lakefront: 26 miles of magnificent architecture, beaches, marinas, bike paths, parks, and more: and it’s all free!

2. Dusty Groove Records: It is difficult for fans of old school soul, jazz, French music, and even rock to leave this well kept record store without spending some money. You’re bound to find your next favorite album here just by browsing.

3. The best Chicago pizza and Italian ice is not in Chicago, it’s at Freddy’s Pizza & Gelateria in Cicero. People have cried over how great the food is at this little Italian grocery store/pizza stand. Those in the “know” go Freddy’s.

4. Chicago is a dream city for Foodies; there’s 6,000+ restaurants in the city alone. Make sure to try any of the Mexican, Italian, Polish, Greek, Irish, Chinese, Japanese or Bohemian restaurants scattered throughout the city for tastes that has been handed down for generations.

5. Neighborhoods: You don’t just live in the city of Chicago, you live in a neighborhood. Each neighborhood has its own name, character and characters; they’re your extended family. Walk out of the neighborhood’s boundaries and you’re in a completely different world.

Personal Note: As it turns out I will actually be visiting Chicago very soon for an Official SXSW Music Festival Party. Details coming soon... Can't wait to visit Dusty Groove Records and try some Freddy's Pizza!

What is SXSW? Good question. Because SXSW is so many things to so many people, there is no simple answer. Trying to understand how the event works or the sheer size of it can be overwhelming. How do you convey 1,987 Music showcases, 912 Interactive speakers and 260 films in a few words?

Last night "supergroup" Monsters of Folk had their first televised performance on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. The band played their song "Say Please." I'm posting this because we've been lucky to have all those lads at the festival at one time or another -- and don't miss the dreamy Will Johnson playing drums in this clip. I think I was more excited to see Will than Jim!

The verdict's still out for me on Conor's sunglasses, though.

New for 2010: The Gear Alley Performance Stage

Beginning in 2010, SXSW Music will unveil the Gear Alley Performance Stage. Over a period of three days, this one-of-a-kind venture will allow artists to test out new equipment in a venue adjoining the Music Trade Show and Artists Lounge. Performances on the stage will be very informal, giving artists a chance to let loose and ad lib on gear provided by featured instrument manufacturers. Whether it is a brand new amplifier or some modified horns, each day will have featured time slots for artists seeking to try out the instruments provided by featured manufacturers. While experiencing the highest quality music equipment available will certainly be a highlight for the artists, music registrants will also have the singular chance to stumble upon professional artists in a casual tester jam on featured gear.

Live Blogging The MTV Video Music Awards - Cause This Is Thriller, Thriller Night

Why am I doing this to you, you might ask? Why am I doing this to myself is the better question. Blogging is pain, people.

9.00 pm This show gets more and more ridiculous as each year passes. I'm sure 2000 and fine will be no exception. I think I'm only doing this for Russell Brand and certainly not for...

MADONNA(!!!!), who kicks off the show looking Botoxed to the max. Maddy's weaving a fascinating (not really) tale of how Michael Jackson's life was just like hers... or something. I guess she had dinner with MJ and held his hand? And there's crotch grabbing and moonwalking going on in her house? People are weeping... or pretending to. MADONNA, YOU ARE SO FULL OF GRAVITAS I BET YOU WOULD CRY, TOO, IF YOUR FACE COULD MOVE!!!

9.08 pm Okay, Madonna finally stopped talking about herself and now a bunch of dancers are doing a Michael Jackson montage. I get why we're paying tribute to MJ and everything, but I'm sort of oh please at the fauxness of it all. However, I will say it's pretty kick ass that Janet Jackson is there lip synching away as Beyonce goes wild.

9.13 pm Part of the reason I love writing about shows like this and the Teen Choice Awards is so I can find out just how out of touch I am with what's going on in pop culture. Like now, who is this chick singing, "We Will Rock You?" Katy Perry? I mean, I know who Joe Perry is at least. Hey, I was right! It is Katy Perry. Is she related to Joe? I bet she's his long lost sister.

9.16 pm Russell Brand hasn't been on stage more than ten seconds and he's already said something disgusting although I'm not quite sure what. Something about a hole/entrance (sorry). Russell implores us all to love each other because Robert Pattinson and P Diddy are in the house. I thought he was just Diddy now? See, I know nothing.

9.18 pm "The Jonas Brothers have to forgive me, they're Christians." Best line of the night so far.

9.20 pm I'm not even going to hang my hat on this Lady Gaga hermaphrodite bit.

9.21 pm "I suppose English people are a bit different than you... instead of letting people die in the street we have free health care." Zing!!

9.23 pm Shakira and Taylor Lautner go through some poorly written she-wolf banter and present Best Female Video to Taylor Swift for "You Belong with Me." I've never heard this song and now I realize what's been missing in my life. I bet Beyonce is pissed.

9.25 pm OH MY GOD. Well, that happened. In the middle of Taylor's acceptance speech Kanye West burst onstage, took the mic from her, and yelled out "I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time. OF ALL TIME!!" I totally wrote that Beyonce joke before this happened so I'm not taking it out. I never thought I'd feel sorry for Taylor Swift but, well, apparently now I do. People are standing and cheering and booing. It's mayhem! Stay classy, Kanye!

9.27 pm I really feel like I should stop watching now because where can the show go from here? It's all downhill, I'm sure.

9.34 pm Jack Black asks everyone to pray to the devil with him while Leighton Meester looks mildly disgusted. They give Best Rock Video to Green Day for "21 Guns." I guess praying to the devil really works because Kings of Leon did not win.

9.38 pm Taylor Swift is busking at the 42nd Street station. Kanye killed her career superfast. I'm impressed. Here I was thinking he isn't that relevant anymore.

9.48 pm Pete Wentz is really short.

9.49 pm mask makes her look both cross-eyed and like the guy from Flock of Seagulls. An impressive feat. Given her almost complete lack of clothing I'm pretty sure we can safely say she is not a hermaphrodite. This "Paparazzi" song is ridiculous but since Lady Gaga is an Illuminati puppet I kind of dig her. Apparently playing a horrible piano solo will kill you because inexplicably she's covered in blood now. This reminds me of Wayne Coyne. I wonder how he would feel about Gaga's performance.

9.55 pm I just realized this show is two and a half hours long. I thought it was only two. I am now inconsolable.

10.00 pm I think Russell Brand just said he wanted to slip a roofie to Megan Fox. Euw.

10.03 pm Best Pop Video goes to Britney Spears. Umm, wha? Geez, where's Kanye now with the outrage??!!

10.05 pm Green Day are playing. Katy Perry's rocking out. This is a good time for a pizza break.

10.16 pm Be still my beating heart, it's R-Patz and the rest of those Twilight people. I'm sooo Team Jacob. Oooh it's an extended look at the New Moon trailer. Dakota Fanning is creeeeepy. God, I remember what it was like to have tons of feelings as I tried to save my one true love... I felt just as confused as Kristen Stewart generally looks.

10.20 pm Oh goodie, Beyonce's here. I super hope she does the rope dance. Please do the rope climbing dance, B! It sounds like she's about to cover Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight." I'm so glad she's bringing leotards and lasers back. Someone needed to. YES!!! I swear that rope climbing gets me every time. I actually just exclaimed and Tom's like, "What is wrong with you?" Poor Tom. He suffers for my art, too. Cuz yeah, this is art. Holy crap there's like fifty leotard ladies on stage now. If they all rope dance I'm going to explode. Drat. Denied.

10.32 pm Diddy (or P Diddy?) and Jamie Lynn Sigler give Best Male Video to TI, who is apparently in prison on a federal weapons conviction. Well, that's the cleverest excuse I've heard for skipping this crappy show. Thank God Kanye didn't win. He was roundly booed when they announced his name as a nominee and I was feeling totes uncomfortable about what would happen if he took the prize. I'm too delicate to witness a tween riot.

10.38 pm Apparently Muse is big here now. Thanks a lot Stephenie Meyer. I liked them better when they were ALL MINE.

10.40 pm Cyndi Lauper, Tracy Morgan and Eminem are doing a video skit together. Never thought I'd write that sentence.

10.43 pm It's hard to be funny every two minutes so if part of this sucks, sorry.

10.49 pm J-Lo presents Best Hip Hop Video to Eminem. First Britney, now this... MTV is sooo ten years ago.

10.51 pm I wondered when the DJ AM tribute was coming (some rapper, I have no idea who, is doing a song). It's interrupted by shots of Jay-Z's motorcade. I see.

10.57 pm I defended Russell Brand last year, but he's sort of bombing. At least his hair looks normal. I can live without hearing about his erections, though.

10.58 pm Tracy Morgan sings "Time After Time" while Eminem gives Best New Artist to Lady Gaga. Her outfit is making me seriously LOL. She says her award is for "God and The Gays." See, she's awesome.

11.00 pm Serena Williams introduces Pink and makes a joke about stepping over lines. I guess most people did not see her hideous freak out at last night's US Open. Or maybe they did and are cheering anyway. Oh God, I can see Pink's boob. When is this show over, again? Pink is singing (read: lip synching) while upside down. This reminds me of Tommy Lee on the Motley Crue Theatre of Pain tour (except he was actually playing).

Okay, I find it oh so fitting that as Serena was busy making stupid jokes at the VMAs, Kim Clijsters was busy kicking ass in the US Open Women's Final. So... you know... joke's on you Serena.

11.11 pm Only twenty minutes left! w00t! I don't even want to know how long this post is.

11.12 pm Gosh, it's Andy Samberg and Jimmy Fallon. It's Video of the Year!! It goes to Beyonce for "Single Ladies" (I told you the rope climbing was powerful). Vindication for Kanye! Lady Gaga has a bird's nest on her face (see, what's not to love?)!

Okay, Beyonce just let Taylor Swift have her acceptance speech. And Taylor just happened to be right there. With a mic. Wearing a cute red dress just like Beyonce. Sorry, but I think I have to call BS. Does this make me a horrible cynic? Good.

11.20 pm I think all that's left is Jay-Z and his motorcade arriving and blah blah blah. I feel cheated just like at the Movie Awards when I believed in Eminem's outrage over Sacha Baron Cohen's crotch in his face. Fool me once, MTV!!! Now the shame is all on me..

SXSW Stories: Aaron Miller - The El Guapos

Around every corner at SXSW, there is a chance to see something special happening. Maybe it's a band making the leap to the next level, starting a scene. The El Guapos, among other acts, opened eyes to a younger generation of musicians.

"If a stranger had walked up to me when I was 16 and told me that I would be playing SXSW in fewer than three years, I would not have believed them. Nor would I have believed that when my best friend and I put together a group and began recording in an old ranch house, we would be on the front end of a youth music movement. In the past year or so, organizations catering to young musicians in Austin have synthesized, coinciding with the development of several strong young Austin bands. 375 people packed Momo’s for the first SXSW official underage day party, and nothing can describe the euphoria of taking the stage in front of a packed SXSW venue.

Indie Label Spotlight - Sargent House

Sargent House was an Indie Village participant in 2009 that also brought us showcasing acts Good Old War, Red Fang, Maps & Atlases and Tera Melos. One of the things about the label that grabbed my attention immediately (besides their insanely amazing roster) was their website. It is completely dedicated to their bands - not the label itself. With a main page consisting solely of the names of the artists, their promo photos and links to more information about them, it's really hard to find info on the actual label. So we asked Cathy Pellow, Manager, to tell us more about the mysterious and modest Sargent House.

So what is Sargent House all about?
Sargent House acts as both Management and Label. It is also the sister company to Refused TV, US/THEM Group and Solid PR. We pride ourselves on being our bands partners in their endeavors and have taken out the “Us against Them“ mentality. We all work for the same common goal which is to make the artists we work with self sustaining. Our focus is more on the long term career development of the artist vs quick churn and burn, singles type stuff.

What plans do you have for the coming year?
We have some great releases coming up on both Sargent House new full lengths from Red Sparowes, Good Old War, Fang Island, Tera Melos, Zach Hill, & Native along with some stuff on Rodriguez Lopez Productions that include Xenophanes...it’s a fantastic record .

What artists are playing on your iPod the most these days?
I’m sure people will think I’m just saying this, but our own artists are in fact my favorite bands. Our whole roster is always in rotation. It helps that I have their new demos and unreleased albums to keep it interesting all the time! If I had to name artists that are spinning for me that I don’t work with, some of my current favorites are: Langhorne Slim, Portugal the Man, Agent Ribbons, The Happy Hollows, So Many Dynamos, Dirty Projectors, Wavves especially now that Zach Hill is in there!

If we were to come visit you in L.A. for just one day, what are some things you would take us to do?
I am a real weirdo when it comes to going out so honestly I’d tell you to come over and hang out at Sargent House, a huge 1920’s house in the hills in Echo Park that I rarely like to leave. I’d pour you drinks, crank some music and invite over a bunch of the people who frequent here, a crazy cast of musicians and filmmakers mainly. Good times, and way cheaper than going to a bar.

The SXSW Indie Village, located in the Music Trade Show, is a hub for Indie Label representatives to meet with Registrants and Artists to field questions and forge new relationships. 2010 participants will be revealed in January. Check out last year's participants.

Doug Sahm lived life so fully, it's still hard to believe he's not on the road somewhere. In a life filled with great music and notable collaborations, the 1969 song "Mendocino" stands out as a high point. We gathered a group of Doug's running partners to focus in on the Texas-to-California emigration that many artists made in that time, and the adventures that having a hit led to. SXSW 101: What are the Trade Shows?

A trade show is a gathering of organizations within a particular industry (or peripheral field) that meet for a specific purpose. Generally, these trade shows are an avenue for companies to showcase innovative products, meet potential clients, observe competitors, or even to stay abreast of innovations and potential market tendencies.

For SXSW, our targeted industries of music, film, and technology are represented in three designated Trade Shows. As a registrant, these Trade Shows are your best arena for establishing the greatest number of contacts and discovering the most buzzworthy companies, trends and products within your particular industry. Some copyright holders have their unlicensed content taken down from community driven sites, leaving only their official (if any) content up. However, others like SXSW Music 2009 Alumnus, Barcelona, actually thank people for the unlicensed use of their music and the resulting increase in record sales.

Is it best to try to control your exposure and potentially limit it, or should you welcome any and all exposure and its effects? While opinions on the matter may vary, increasing record sales in the current market is something that cannot be ignored.

Infectious Success in the Music Business

It's no news that a YouTube clip can give you global recognition seemingly overnight. We have seen it happen to laughing babies, wannabe Jedi warriors and musicians on treadmills. Now that OK Go's famously choreographed video has shown us that a viral video can boost sales and licensing deals, the question is no longer about whether to use the site, but how to use it to create your own infectious outbreak. Since jumping on the bandwagon and launching the channel in March, we have already witnessed a small sensation of our own. This week for our Indie Label Spotlight, we present Cheap Lullaby Records. Cheap Lullaby has an amazing roster (including past SXSW performers Joan As Police Woman, Ane Brun, Tobias Froberg) and last year for SXSW 2009, brought us the beautiful Sylvie Lewis from Rome. No one on the roster is currently touring, but while you're waiting for those new albums and announced tour dates, check out Cheap Lullaby's YouTube channel. There are some great videos there to keep you satisfied for awhile. Cheap Lullaby Owner, Joe Ross, told us a little bit about his label.

One of SXSW's most endearing qualities is the fact that the festival and conference draws musicians and music business professionals from literally all over the world to Austin's small downtown area. With a wealth of clubs all within walking distance from the Convention Center - the epicenter of it all - it's inevitable that you will cross paths with people from places that you may have never expected to hear modern music.

Below is a SXSW story from Canja Rave, a rock duo from Porto Alegre, Brazil.

"We traveled to SXSW with support from Ministério da Cultura (Brazilian Government) and had two official showcases at The Rio for Brazilian Night, and at Lamberts with bands from around the world. There were so many options of shows all around Austin, and we were very glad that there were lots of people to see us, especially at Lambert’s. It is not everyday you have bands from Brazil, Japan, UK, USA, Spain and Ireland on the same stage, so for us it was a great experience to play this gig and watch the shows of these other bands, who gave us positive feedback about our work. The most amazing thing about SXSW is the cultural diversity and the interest of the public in meeting new artists, no matter how big they are like Devo, Ben Harper or a new independent band like Canja Rave."

So, if you have a great idea for a panel or a solo presentation, then e-mail us -- on Wednesday, August 26 we will send you the special log-in information that will allow you to submit your idea. On the other hand, if you'd just like to browse the 300 entries that we've already got in the system, remember that voting continues through Friday, September 4. This week we present a label from our own backyard - Chicken Ranch Records. The label had several talented artists at SXSW this past March including: We Were The States, The Clutters and Mr Lewis and The Funeral 5. Michael Dickinson, the President of Chicken Ranch Records, answered some questions for us about the label and what's coming up for them in the near future.

So what is Chicken Ranch Records all about?
Finding and releasing great music by bands who know how to put on a live show.

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?
Mostly great, despite some sound and parking problems, the label had a great year at SXSW. Personally, it’s tough to balance out ‘official’ business and wanting to walk around as a music fan and catch as much music as possible.

Who are some Chicken Ranch bands you're excited about this year?
Willie Heath Neal is burning up the road this year, his new album has been well received and he’s finally getting the adulation he deserves. We just started working with a local band called Beautiful Supermachines that is picking up solid local buzz.

Do you have any huge, exciting plans for the coming year?
We are planning on our second showcase at Next Big Nashville in early October. Several bands are planning on starting or finishing up records this year. I hope to have new music from Mr. Lewis and The Funeral 5, Automusik, and We Were The States by SXSW 2010.

What artists are playing on your iPod the most these days?
Besides Ranch related stuff, I’m currently enjoying the new Phoenix and Jarvis Cocker records.

What is your absolute favorite thing about living and running a label in Austin, TX?
Besides the 100+ degree summer days, Austin is great for music, raising a family and all around having a good time. Having access to a great music scene and it’s resources is a definite benefit for the label.

Detroit Rapper Invincible Launches New "Travel Agency"

2009 Showcasing artist, Invincible made quite a splash at SXSW this past March. Her packed show at the Back Alley Social was hailed by critics and fans from all over the globe as a highlight of the festival. She's an outspoken MC that goes against the grain of current hip-hop trends, eschewing simplicity for a more classic "edu-tational" sort of flow.

Her new website, billed as a hip-hop travel agency, is not the place to go when you need to find a cheap flight, but it can provide quite an escape.

PanelPicker Voting Launches Monday, August 17

Thanks again to the thousands of members of the SXSW online community who have submitted panel and solo presentation proposals for next spring's event. To this end, the 2010 PanelPicker voting application is now set to launch on Monday, August 17 (this is a week later than initially scheduled -- all good things come to those who wait). We've added a few new twists to the voting process for 2010, which we think will continue to improve the usability and functionality (and fun!) of this process.

Also, remember that the PanelPicker is now being used to help program panels for all three SXSW events -- Interactive, Music and Film. Stay tuned to this website for more information on the big launch next week!

Just like the Spice Girls, SXSW Music invites you to share your opinions on the 2010 PanelPicker ideas we have on hand. Nearly 300 ideas have been sent our way. Public voting on these ideas begins next Monday, August 17 and continues through Friday, September 4. We know that we'll get some feedback from our die-hard Music Conference fans. We also welcome Interactive and Film folks and total SXSW newbies to weigh in. The voting interface will magically appear next Monday at the main PanelPicker page. For further reference, there's always the PanelPicker FAQ. These ideas will form a majority of our programming next March. We're very excited about the fresh panels we're going to offer our registrants. Zig a zig ahhh.

Houston-Based Latium Entertainment Celebrates 10 Years

Since forming in 1999, Latium Entertainment has launched the careers of some of popular music’s brightest shining stars, including Frankie J, Natalie, Baby Bash, Play N Skillz and most recently Chamillionaire. It’s a company that is home to a thriving label, that also handles management, publishing, production and promotions all under one roof. Add recent signees Pitbull and Slim Thug to their roster and you’ve got one of the premier music business power brokers in the south.

Charles Chavez, a Houston native and long-time veteran of the radio and record game, started the company with a vision for not only himself and his artists but for Houston as a whole. “When I started, I knew that Houston was an untapped market.” Chavez remembers as he sits at his desk in his palatial office on Houston’s Southwest side. “Destiny’s Child was just breaking out and I thought ‘Man, there’s got to be more Beyonce’s.’ It was also when the Lil Troy record broke out. I saw Atlanta turning into a music Mecca and knew that Houston is bigger than Atlanta. I saw that vision back then and now it has come full circle.”

Their first success was in signing Frankie J from the Kumbia Kings. His ballad “Don’t Want to Cry” went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. That record spawned a collaboration with Baby Bash called “Suga Suga,” which went to #1 in seven countries. Frankie J sold a million records around the world and from there, the Latium story began to grow.

“I was a Latin kid from the hood who liked urban music, so I wanted to make music for the kids just like me.” Chavez continues, “I knew they were out there because I grew up with them. There are Latin kids out there who aren’t signing Ricky Martin’s music. They want to rap, they want to sing r&b, they want to do the things that their urban counterparts do.”

Ten years down the line and Latium is standing as strong as ever. Tonight they celebrate their anniversary in style at Houston’s hottest new nightclub, Reign (4105 Washington Ave., www.reignlounge.com) with an all-star Red Carpet Event. Top stars from the Latin and Urban music world will be in attendance alongside sports luminaries and A-List celebrities from around the nation. Congratulations Latium!

Indie Label Spotlight - 00:02:59

This week we bring you a label based in Brooklyn which apparently has a staff that really likes to eat (see the answer to the last question)! 00:02:59's roster includes one of our local favorites, Ian McLagan, who performed at the last installment of SXSW and has several tour dates lined up in the coming months. They also boast some impressive new-comers, so make sure to stay tuned to what they have going on. Abe Bradshaw, Owner & CEO, gave us a little insight on the label and of course, where to stuff our faces in Brooklyn.

So what is 00:02:59 all about?

00:02:59 was formed to release albums created by amazing singer-songwriters. We are proud to have a roster that consists of not only established legends like Ian McLagan, Willie Nile and Scott Kempner... but also brand new talent like Dana Falconberry and Matt Mays. It's all about the music, heart and soul… not about image or hype. Every song on every album released on 00:02:59 is stellar - all killer, no filler. Or, as we like to say it: "Real music for real fans of the real deal."

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?

SXSW is always a great time - and SXSW 2009 did not disappoint!! My Jerusalem, Ian McLagan and the Bump Band, and Willie Nile all had several (amazing!) shows which kept us busy. It's always so great to have so many friends from all over the world in one place for a week... especially if that one place is Austin, Texas!

Who are some 00:02:59 bands you're excited about this year?

Ian McLagan and the Bump Band just performed on the Late Show with David Letterman - so that was certainly a highlight - and their new album, "Never Say Never," has been very well received. My Jerusalem, a brand new indie rock "supergroup" lead by the amazing Jeff Klein, are about to play some more live dates - and they put on an incredible live show. We are hard at work on finishing their debut full length album. Finally, people are really enjoying the self-titled album from Clay George. His gentle and soothing croon drifting over catchy and smooth Folk/Old-school Country tunes is winning new fans of all ages.

What artists are playing on your iPod the most these days?

We are mostly listening to the TOP SECRET artists of the future - and the entire 00:02:59 catalog, of course. Apart from that, we can't stop listening to the "This Is Reggae Music 1960-1975" box set from Trojan Records. For new releases, we love The Rosewood Thieves, The Woggles, RPG, Pat Todd and the Rank Outsiders, and many, many others.

If we came to visit you in Brooklyn for just one day, where would you take us?

That's a great question - because the only thing we love more than Brooklyn is showing off Brooklyn to our friends. The first stop would be getting amazing bagels and cream cheese at La Bagel Delight and coffee at Gorilla Coffee in Park Slope... then hopping on the subway to Coney Island to ride the Cyclone (and maybe see a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game if they are in town). Then, we'd take the Q train to Midwood to eat the greatest pizza in the world at DiFara, made by the Dominator himself. Then, we would return to Park Slope for dinner at Kinara (Indian) or Al Di La (Italian) or Bogota (South American) followed by ice cream at Uncle Louis G's, cheesecake at Juniors before we head over to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) for a movie, concert or performance. Now, that is one fine day!!

The SXSW YouTube Video Vault - Johnny Cash - 1994 Keynote Address

Flashback to 1994. Where were you on March 17? That was the day the man in black came to SXSW to serve as keynote speaker and blow us all away with a mesmerizing set at Emo's. Yes, Johnny Cash played Emo's... on the same bill as Beck... who was then largely unknown.

But I digress... I feel fortunate to introduce this keynote clip. I feel even more fortunate to have been there. (Yes, that's me standing next to him looking like a total doof in the press shots. He was surrounded by men, decided that wasn't right and said, "I need some girls here" and grabbed then music booker Annie McReynolds and me to stand beside him. Talk about being in a magical place at a magical time.)

It's amazing to see Mr. Cash come to life, sharing stories, singing songs. He was a sweet and generous man and of the hundreds of highlights throughout the history of SXSW, this one stands the test of time and shows what a consummate performer and funny man he was. We were all dazzled and charmed.

Cash's SXSW performance at Emo's was a precursor to the April release of American Recordings, his first collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. You'll see snippets of songs from the album in this clip. The record revitalized Cash's career and included a new version of "Delia's Gone" and a soulful reworking of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" alongside the Glenn Danzig penned "Thirteen."

I'm thrilled they dug this clip out of the video vault. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Cash...

Everyone's first SXSW can be a little overwhelming. With hundreds of panel sessions, two trade shows, more than 300 film screenings and nearly 2,000 performing musical acts, anyone could feel a little out of their element. So for you, our new friend (and some of you veterans who might have forgotten a thing or two), we've started the "First-timers Guide" for SXSW. On the guide, we'll explain things like the difference between a badge and registration (hint: they're the same thing), what you should plan on for your first day, how to navigate Austin and what other things you can expect to experience when you get here.

First step to SXSW for everyone - not just beginners - you need to register and book your hotel. You'll get the best rate on your badge if you buy now, not to mention the best selection of hotels SXSW has to offer.

What kind of badge should you get? It depends on what you want to see. SXSW consists of three conferences and festivals spread over ten days. You can attend any of the three conferences separately, Music, Film, and Interactive. You can also combine conferences (Film + Interactive = Gold and Music + Film + Interactive = Platinum). SXSW Stories: Simon Raymonde

To illustrate the unique experience each SXSW registrant enjoys, we're sharing some feedback from our 2009 attendees. First up is Simon Raymonde, of the Cocteau Twins and more recently, Bella Union Records. Simon spoke on the "History Of British Indies" panel along with some notable colleagues.

"SXSW Was a blast this year. A highlight was appearing on a panel (History of British Indies) with Seymour Stein, Peter Jenner and Geoff Travis. It was a great privilege to be part of such an esteemed group, but it was especially refreshing for me, as a slightly younger counterpart, to see gents who were still 30, 40 and even 50 years on, caring deeply about the independent scene, the ethic and most importantly, the music. This filled me with warm feelings and to hear Geoff Travis talk about music is something we all should experience as often as possible."

Re-Designed SXSW Website Launches Monday, August 3

The 2010 season for SXSW officially begins on Monday, August 3 with the launch of our re-designed website. We are very excited about our new look for 2010 -- and we think that you will also enjoy / benefit from the many changes and additions to the site.

Monday, August 3 also marks the first day you can officially register for the 2010 event (which is scheduled Friday, March 12 through Sunday, March 21).

Finally, if you want to make sure you have access to all the available hotel properties during SXSW, then be sure to register and reserve your room when the new site opens on Monday, August 3.

This week's featured label, File Under: Music, is personally great for me to present because of a fine young artist named Dan Mangan that I met at the Great Escape Festival this May in Brighton, UK. He is one of the hardest-working, most talented artists I've ever met and being a part of the File Under: Music family speaks highly of him AND the label. Dan was a showcasing artist at SXSW 2009 and File Under: Music was a valuable participant in this year's Indie Village. FUM boasts an exciting booking roster and has some great things coming up including newest artist signing, Christer. Label Manager, Josh McNorton, talked a little bit about who the label is, what they have coming up and some fun things to do in Vancouver.

So what is File Under: Music all about?
File Under: Music is an independent music company based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We are paving the way to develop a presence as a true all encompassing “one stop shop” artist development house. Specifically, we are an artist manager, independent record label, film & television placement house, tour manager, booking agency, and whatever else we decide we want to be or need to be for our artists. We offer distribution for our releases (via Outside Music in Canada and NAIL Distribution in the USA), and support networks worldwide. We’re focusing our energy on one simple goal: developing talented, hard working artists and ensuring they have everything they need to make a go of it in the global marketplace.

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?
SXSW 2009 was amazing; by far the most valuable networking event for our business, not to mention the best live music festival in the world. I saw far too many great bands to recount, and Austin is a wonderful city with the friendliest, most helpful people I've ever met!

Who are some File Under: Music artists you're excited about this year?
We are releasing Dan Mangan's second album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, in August -- there has been a huge buzz building for him in Canada, the UK and Australia, so we have great expectations for this release.
Christer, our newest signing, is an electro-pop artist from Vancouver who's had a very successful year thus far with showcases at Canadian Music Week, JunoFest and the NXNE Music Festival, as well as her first Australian tour where she shared festival stages with De La Soul, Ratatat and many more great artists.

What artists are playing on your MP3 player the most these days?
I've been mostly playing The Mars Volta, Portico (Vancouver indie band), The Knife, Brand New, and Coldplay.

If we were to visit you in Vancouver for one day only, what do you think we should definitely see and do?
The west end of downtown Vancouver features five different beaches, an amazing view of the mountains, and Stanley Park, the largest urban park in North America. If the sun is shining, I would recommend grabbing inexpensive sushi on Davie Street and walking the "sea wall" from the Burrard Bridge to Stanley Park, stopping at any of the beautiful sand beaches along the way.

YouTube Treats - Daniel Johnston at Studio SX - "I Feel Like A Monkey In A Zoo In This Place!"

As a former and sometimes current resident of Austin, I am familiar with the interesting, sad, sometimes funny, often sweet tale of Daniel Johnston.

We were lucky enough to have Daniel over to Studio SX this year for a little chat. A meandering journey of an interview that takes us through his early influences, Beatles love, Pizza Hut and good friends who make you feel famous. He and Jason Gross touch on Kurt Cobain, his possible Converse shoe line and life in Waller, Texas where his father built him a house. He even has a new album, The Death of Satan.

Somewhere in there he's joined by Gabriel Sunday, whose My Suicide premiered at SXSW. Sunday is developing a biopic about Johnston with David Lee Miller (who apparently resembles Steven Spielberg prompting Daniel to call the film ET vs Jaws). Sunday calls it Forest Gump meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Indie Label Spotlight - End Sounds

This week we bring you a label from our own backyard here in Austin, TX - End Sounds. The Label was founded in June of 2001 and is owned by Jonathan Gill and Keith Underwood. At SXSW 2009, we saw three of the label's talented artists True Widow, Death in the Park and The Escape Frame. They have plenty of things lined up for this coming year like promoting a solo country project by MxPx's Mike Herrera called Tumbledown which was released in May. Sweet-natured Jonathan told us a little bit about the label and what they've got going on.

So what is End Sounds all about?
End Sounds is a record label born and bred from punk and hardcore subcultures but not stylistically and musically confined by them. I hope people see End Sounds as a representation of the label's slogan, "Purveyors of fine music." Essentially, like all good labels, I wanted someone to see the End Sounds logo on a product and know that regardless of the style of music or era...that's it's quality and worth spending their time exploring.

How was your experience at SXSW 2009?
I had a great time, but truth be told I didn't get to see many shows outside of our own bands. This was the first year that End Sounds had an official showcase and I also spent a few hours a day at SXSW's Indie Village answering questions and talking to people. Indie Village was a great experience and I hope that as it grows we get to participate again. End Sounds also had a fun party with a one-time only all-star Minor Threat tribute band called Filler, Madball, and a good chunk of the active End roster at the time. The band consisted of members of Gorilla Biscuits, Rise Against, GWAR, Riverboat Gamblers, Warzone, and Gallows. I know it's not punk rock, but I actually cried that night...Filler was so good. I'm going to have another party/show for SXSW 2010 and we've got quite a few surprises in store.

Who are some End Sounds bands you're excited about this year?
The Mag Seven have their third End Sounds full-length coming out this October and has an unexpectedly jazzy/bossa nova sound. The 100% instrumental band features members of Black Flag, Descendents, Toadies, All, Only Crime, and Hagfish. They are actually recording what could amount to three records this year, all with different musical styles and themes to them, so I'm extremely excited for people to hear the material over the next year or two. This year we also released the debut album by Mike Herrera's Tumbledown. Some people know Mike Herrera as the singer/songwriter for MxPx, but since at least 1998 Mike's been writing these Frankenstein country/pop-punk/rock-a-billy hybrid songs. I used to work for MxPx and for Mike's own label so I remember things like him naming MxPx tours after Willie Nelson songs. The Tumbledown record holds a special place in my heart since after all these years Mike trusted me and my work enough to release his debut solo album on End Sounds.

What artists are playing on your iPod the most these days?
Ornette Coleman, Propagandhi, Descendents, Jay-Z, Superdrag, Tiger Lou, and True Widow.

What is your absolute favorite thing about living and running a label in Austin, TX?
I've lived in in Austin for 6+ years now and one of my favorite things is to see both people and the town grow while retaining the essence of who they are.

Formed in Tehran in 2000, the arrival of TarantisT on our shores begs the question, how many of us have heard Persian Heavy Metal?

SXSW Visits Rock Al Parque

The organizers, The Philharmonic Orquesta of Bogotá and The Foundation of Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, hosted ¡Rock Al Parque Tambien Habla! in an effort to give musicians and members of the Colombian music industry a better understanding of the internationalization of music. This series of conference panel discussions, showcases and business round tables were held prior to the festival from the 23rd thru 26th of June and were composed of members of the industry including managers, bookers, buyers, distributors, musicians. Scott and Alicia spoke about the importance of social networking sites, technology and the programming process of SXSW Music Festival. Other panelists invited were Joel Hamilton ( producer), Juan Vandervoort (A & R of K7), Alberto Cabello (Manager/CEO of Altamira Artists),Saul Ramos (Myspace México), Victor Leonore (Deluxe Magazine), Hector Castillo (Producer), Kelly Kapp (Live Nation), Fernan Martinez (Juanes' Manager) amongst others.

Rock Al Parque is part of a series of festivals produced by the Bogota's Secretariat of Culture, Recreation and Sport in order to better support emerging Rock music talent from its city and surrounding urban areas. This year's edition of RAP consisted of 71 acts including 16 international bands which made up the majority of the festival headliners. Among them were acts who have previously showcased at SXSW such as Plastilina Mosh, Candy 66, Mexican Institute of Sound, Molotov, and Ely Guerra all from México, as well as Tom Cary from Spain.

Quincy Jones on Michael Jackson at SXSW '09

The 2009 SXSW Music Keynote speech from Quincy Jones contained many unforgettable moments. Among them was a series of stories about his work and friendship with Michael Jackson. After meeting on the set of "The Wiz," Jackson convinced Jones to produce his next record, and went against label advice to pursue this collaboration. What ensued was history, and 'Q' shares his unique perspective on the blockbuster of 'Thriller' and the breaking of racial barriers at MTV. As we remember Michael Jackson's music and note his deep and wide cultural impact, we thank Quincy Jones for sharing his remarkable life stories at SXSW '09.

YouTube Treats - Dead Confederate

Hiya kidz. I'm back (yes, I know you're thrilled). I'm done moving and stuff (although stuff is not done moving... or breaking for that matter). And what a way to come back... with this tasty video shot right here at the ol' SXSW festival of Dead Confederate performing the song "Yer Circus" from their debut album Wrecking Ball.

Now I confess I didn't know much about these gentlemen from Georgia, but your friend and mine Ms. Jenni Sperandeo tweets about them all the damn time. Now I have been schooled and am a new fond fan of the recent (recent meaning last night) winners of Flagpole's Best Rock Band Award. I mentioned to JS that lead singer Hardy Morris looks like the dude you hook up with one night in high school who breaks your heart the next day, but she assures me that he is a very nice, non-hipster type.

Part of what I love about SXSW is discovering all the excellent breakout bands, err, months after the fact... and then kicking myself for missing them. Happens every year. Happening today. Luckily they're coming to the 'ville (that's Louisville) soon so maybe I can catch them in July. Then they're off on tour with The Meat Puppets so you can go see them, too!
