Geisy Arruda, the college student from Brazil who was expelled for wearing a short, pink dress to class in Bandeirante University in Sao Bernardo do Campo is no longer being expelled.

According to MSNBC reports, the private university where she was studying backed down Monday on its decision to expel her. This is after a flood of negative reactions across the globe ridiculing the said decision.

This might be or might not be good news for Geisy. It depends on her attitude towards the situation. If she takes this with an open mind, then I guess she can go her way and continue studying in the same university with peace of mind. On the other hand, if she thinks that people view her negatively at school then that might affect her studies for the worse.

News of ongoing vaccination in the States brings a sigh of relief to some thinking this would solve the problem. But in other countries, there is a different flavor to the swine flu news. Geysi Villa Nova Arruda, 20 was expelled from Universidade Bendeirante (Uniban) in Sao Paolo, Brazil after outraged university students violently protested her wearing of a short dress in campus.

Uniban stated in local newspapers that they have expelled Arruda on the grounds of “flagrant disrespect of ethical principles, academic dignity and morality.”

A video shows Arruda sitting in a classroom wearing mid-thigh length dress then being escorted by the military police officers wearing a white jacket while students stood in line chanting “whore”.

Some critics however don’t agree with the University’s decision labeling it as pure hypocrisy. They think that the decision is unfair for a nation that is obsessed with physical beauty. They also pointed out that once festivals arrive, like the Carnival Festival, people would even dance naked “and no one will find it abnormal.”

Brazil, though known for its tiny bikinis and beautiful beaches, is a largely dominated Roman Catholic country. The 2000 Census shows that 74% of the country’s 190 million people (fifth largest in the world) are Catholics.

Executive Producer Carol-Lynn Parente said in a statement that Sesame Street is promising to celebrate the anniversary with some changes.

We’re also launching an entirely new format for the show — the magazine format of Sesame Street, which has been evolving over the years, has been officially replaced with what we’re calling a ‘block’ format. Korean Peninsula

Naval forces of North Korea and South Korea exchanged fire at their west coast in the Yellow Sea at 11:28 AM local time (0228 GMT), November 10, 2009, Tuesday. South Korea’s Yonhap agency reported.

No casualties were initially reported but a North Korean boat was badly damaged.

A South Korean official was cited that North Korean ships crossed the boundary and that the South Korean ships fired warning shots. The North Korean ship continued sailing southwards and that is the time South Korean opened fire. The North Korean boat fired back.

The clash came eight days before a scheduled visit of US President Barack Obama in South Korea as part of his Asian tour.

The two Korean nations have disputed the actual water boundaries -known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL), between them. The Korean War, which paused in an armistice July 27, 1953, has not been officially ended though a treaty.

Previous skirmishes between the two nations occurred in 1999 and 2002. North Korean ships have also ventured into the South Korean waters. Four casualties and nine injuries were recorded in the 2002 conflict.

Justin Timberlake

Grammy and Emmy Award winner Justin Timberlake was given a permanent three-year restraining order against obsessed fan Karen McNeil.

Los Angeles Superior Judge David Cunningham ordered McNeil, 48 to stay at least 100 yards away from Timberlake, his home, his car and places where the singer works.

McNeil was arrested October 22, 2009 at Timberlake’s home. McNeil was reported to have trespassed the property several times already, getting past through the house’s security measures. She even left notes for the singer.

Timberlake did not show up in the hearing as he is presumably working for the film, Social Network. He submitted a sworn declaration instead. McNeil was in court and she has been heard screaming after the court adjourned.

The sworn declaration of Timberlake stated that the musician called McNeil “obsessed and mentally unstable stalker” and that he “does not personally know or have any relationship with [McNeil].”

Reports show that McNeil have previously disobeyed a court order of protection granted to Axl Rose in 1997.

Elizabeth Lambert, a University of New Mexico soccer player has been suspended indefinitely for one of the more unsportsmanlike moves you’ll ever see in college soccer.

Video highlights have been airing nationally since Thursday night and not because it was a thrilling game but more on how Lambert played the game. In the clip below, you can see how she took BYU’s Kassidy Shumway down by grabbing her ponytail and pulling her backward.

Comedian and rapper Katt Williams was arrested in Georgia on Sunday for burglary and criminal trespassing after allegedly breaking into a home, says Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Major James Yarbrough.

William’s first court appearance is set for 4 p.m. ET Monday, where a magistrate will decide if Williams is eligible for bond, said Deborah Matthews, a spokeswoman with the Coweta County Magistrate Court.

Williams, whose real name is Micah S. Katt Williams, is known for his roles in the movies “Friday After Next” and “Norbit.”

Stroller maker Maclaren expects to recall 1 million umbrella strollers because of safety issues. According to reports, there’s a potential risk of major finger injuries to children.

Maclaren is making the recall after 12 injuries were reported. The Maclaren stroller recall applies to all umbrella strollers sold since 1999, according to New York Daily news.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Maclaren is providing consumers and retailers free repair kits which will cover a joint on the umbrella stroller’s hinge mechanism.

Thousands of people are joining world leaders in Germany today to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a symbol that marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

The East began construction of the Wall in the early hours of August 13, 1961 to stop the flight of people to the West. After its erection, around 5,000 people attempted to escape over the border, with estimates of the resulting death toll varying between around 100 and 200.

Today’s festivities include concerts, a memorial service for those people killed trying to escape through the barrier, toppling of 1,000 giant brightly colored dominoes placed along the wall’s route and fireworks display at the Brandenburg Gate.

World leaders including Gordon Brown, Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev will also give speeches.

At a ceremony last night, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for a new transatlantic push to free those still oppressed.

“Our history did not end the night the Wall came down,” she said.

“To expand freedom to more people, we cannot accept that freedom does not belong to all people. We cannot allow oppression defined and justified by religion or tribe to replace that of (communist) ideology.”

Germany celebrates fall of Berlin Wall

Heavy rains in El Salvador triggered flooding and mudslides that left more than 100 people dead and dozens missing across the Central American nation. The capital of San Salvador and central San Vicente province are the hardest-hit regions.

About 7,000 people, many of them poor cliff dwellers, saw their homes damaged, destroyed or cut off by floods and mudslides.

In a national radio broadcast, President Mauricio Funes described the disaster as “tragedy” and said the damage was “incalculable”.
