The Hamptons Grind spotted broadcaster and ex-Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos with his two faithful dogs -- Daisy the Dachshund and Charlie the terrier mix -- outside Starbucks.

It seems Daisy is used to paparazzi and other attention, having appeared on Good Morning America where she also did the sports prediction thing.

Australian PGA player Jason Day doesn't leave his miniature Dachshund pups, Lola and Charlie, at home when he's on the road. Nor does he have an entourage to take care of them in a private jet. According to BigPond Sport, "Day and wife Ellie were stuck in the back row of a cramped 57-seat regional jet, their two dachshunds travelling as carry-on in bags under the seat."

Nor was that the end of the travel problems Day experienced at the PGA Golf Championship at Whistling Straits. Saturday morning, while getting ready to head off to the course, Tiger Woods showed up on the TV, warming up on the range.

Day knew he was on the same score as Woods, which meant he would be teeing off about the same time.

Understandably, he panicked.

"We weren't thinking," he admitted. "I was in bed watching the golf and all of a sudden I see Tiger.

"I was crapping myself. Ellie was crapping herself even more."

A few minutes later, Day was giving his Mercedes tournament courtesy car a good workout and in the end made his tee time easily, arriving at the course with 45 minutes to spare.

After shooting a bogey-free 66 to pull within four strokes of the lead, Day was more concerned with his two Dachshunds, Lola and Charlie.

"I've left the puppies there for at least eight hours by themselves," he said. "I'm sure there's going to be a big smell and some stains."

Maine Dachshund demos pet oxygen mask

In Maine, the Portland Fire Department, the Portland Downtown District and Planet Dog Foundation have just kicked off a $3,000 fundraising effort to equip fire trucks with pet oxygen masks.

The Associated Press reports:

The masks, which cost $40 apiece, are designed to fit dogs and cats, and come in a variety of sizes. Officials say the goal is to have all sizes on each fire truck in Maine's largest city.

Chief Fred LaMontagne ) says the first priority of firefighters is protecting people. But he says pets are important, too. He says that often the first words out of homeowners' mouths during a fire are pleas to help save their beloved pet.

City Councilor Dave Marshall and Mocha, his long-haired mini-dachshund, attended a news conference Monday to demonstrate the masks.

The Daily Doxie is trying to hunt up some TV coverage of this event so we can see Mocha's moment in a mask.

Rollo the wiener dog calls it as he sees it

Ever since Paul the psychic octopus became a World Cup winner-picking sensation, everybody and their dog has been trying to get in on the act. Across the pond at Sky Sports, they've now got Rollo the Dachshund making predictions. today, he's calling for Arsenal to beat Liverpool in the Super Sunday match about to get under way. Go watch the video and then sit back, watch the game and see if he's right.

Meanwhile in Michigan, Donut -- another Dachshund with a food name -- is calling American football winners.

And finally, the Daily Doxie has a prediction of its own: this trend is unlikely to last.

Football star charged with killing Dachshund

Donny Allieri of Boonton Township, New Jersey is accused of letting an eight-year-old Dachshund named Pepper out of its cage in his ex-girlfriend's house and smashing it against the floor and wall. But his lawyer, Marcy McMann, told the Daily Record the animal had been sick, suddenly started biting and more likely died of other causes. She said she has seen no evidence of injuries to the dog and there were no witnesses to the alleged cruelty.

McMann said the dachshund bit Allieri in early June. On June 6, McMann said, the alleged victims found Pepper dead in its cage but didn't bring that to the attention of police until the end of June when an investigation started into jewelry stolen from the house.

Meanwhile in other bad wiener dog news, a Florida Panhandle man has been charged with killing and skinning his family's seven-year-old Chiweenie because he believed it was possessed by the devil.

You know that Great Dane, Titan, who just won the world's tallest dog title? Well he's being challenged for his Guinness world record and not just by another Great Dane. The world's tallest Dachshund appeared last weak on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien to show that he is definitely taller than Titan.

Why does this controversy remind us of the world's oldest dog fight. The Guinness people need to shape up.

The Curry Coastal Pilot has the full story on the wiener dog and his canine companion who were found in Brookings, Oregon:

Brookings Police were called when a Fred Meyer store employee found a note in the elevator Monday morning. The note asked the finder to rescue her two dogs from Azalea Park.

At about the same time, Brookings Police responded to a report of dogs barking at the park, where they found a Dachshund and a Red Heeler mix tied to a bench with another note indicating that the owner had lost her job and her husband wouldn’t pay to feed them any more.

The dogs, which shelter volunteers have named Guy and Sandy, are 10 or 11 years old, and both are housebroken and healthy except for ear infections, Powers said.

While it is not clear what will happen to Guy and his friend, if you are looking for a rescue wiener dog in Oregon, try Oregon Dachshund Rescue.

Rebuttal: Dogs not worse for environment than SUVs

Remember that silly junk science story a while back about how dog owners did more environmental damage than SUV drivers. Well, as the Daily Dachshund and Dog News suspected, it was barking mad. Clark Williams-Derry has crunched the numbers and has this to say:

It's just the sort of counter-intuitive claim that gets lots of attention on the brave new internet era. So interesting! So science-y! So Twitter-able!

And yet, so false! Once you sniff around the numbers, it quickly becomes apparent that those researchers are barking up the wrong tree.

Let's get one thing out of the way: I'm not a dog owner. Much to my kids' dismay, I don't even want a pet. Nor do I own an SUV. So, in theory, I...er...don't have a dog in this fight. Still, this claim struck me as so wrong that it made the hair on my neck stand up. And I'd hate to have someone catch scent of this meme and conclude that buying an SUV is no big deal -- "It's not like I'm buying a dog or anything" -- if the real numbers don't support that conclusion. (That's the risk of bad information: it can lead us to make choices that are in stark conflict with our values.)
