You know that Great Dane, Titan, who just won the world's tallest dog title? Well he's being challenged for his Guinness world record and not just by another Great Dane. The world's tallest Dachshund appeared last weak on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien to show that he is definitely taller than Titan.

Why does this controversy remind us of the world's oldest dog fight. The Guinness people need to shape up.

The Curry Coastal Pilot has the full story on the wiener dog and his canine companion who were found in Brookings, Oregon:

Brookings Police were called when a Fred Meyer store employee found a note in the elevator Monday morning. The note asked the finder to rescue her two dogs from Azalea Park.

At about the same time, Brookings Police responded to a report of dogs barking at the park, where they found a Dachshund and a Red Heeler mix tied to a bench with another note indicating that the owner had lost her job and her husband wouldn’t pay to feed them any more.

The dogs, which shelter volunteers have named Guy and Sandy, are 10 or 11 years old, and both are housebroken and healthy except for ear infections, Powers said.

While it is not clear what will happen to Guy and his friend, if you are looking for a rescue wiener dog in Oregon, try Oregon Dachshund Rescue.

Rebuttal: Dogs not worse for environment than SUVs

Remember that silly junk science story a while back about how dog owners did more environmental damage than SUV drivers. Well, as the Daily Dachshund and Dog News suspected, it was barking mad. Clark Williams-Derry has crunched the numbers and has this to say:

It's just the sort of counter-intuitive claim that gets lots of attention on the brave new internet era. So interesting! So science-y! So Twitter-able!

And yet, so false! Once you sniff around the numbers, it quickly becomes apparent that those researchers are barking up the wrong tree.

Let's get one thing out of the way: I'm not a dog owner. Much to my kids' dismay, I don't even want a pet. Nor do I own an SUV. So, in theory, I...er...don't have a dog in this fight. Still, this claim struck me as so wrong that it made the hair on my neck stand up. And I'd hate to have someone catch scent of this meme and conclude that buying an SUV is no big deal -- "It's not like I'm buying a dog or anything" -- if the real numbers don't support that conclusion. (That's the risk of bad information: it can lead us to make choices that are in stark conflict with our values.)

Dachshund in wheelchair works as therapy dog

Lance, a South Florida Dachshund who was paralyzed two years ago, visits patients at Miami's Children's Hospital once a week to help cheer them up.

After surgery failed to cure Lance, his owners got him a wheelchair, the Miami Herald reports.

"The wheelchair was a natural thing for him. He got movement back," (his owner Claudia) Machado said. "He was moving around the office as he always would. It was the coolest day of my life because I could see in his face that he was excited to be moving around."

The chair has Lance's name on it.

But rediscovering his mobility was only the beginning for Lance and his family. Having experienced the trauma of illness and disability -- albeit on a canine scale -- Stinchi and Machado started thinking: What if their beloved pet could help sick children deal with their loss?

That's when the couple discovered Therapy Dog Inc., a Wyoming-based organization that provides training, tests and registration for therapy dogs around the country.

"A lot of people think that if your dog is paralyzed, you have to put him down," Machado said. "But that's when his story began."

In 2008, Therapy Dog certified Lance. And both Machado and her husband Stinchi became certified pet handlers.

"Lance loves kids," Stinchi said. "He relates to kids better than adults."

Some Dachshunds have all the luck like Moxie the Doxie of Fallingwater

Take Moxie, for example. This long-haired, pearl-wearing Dachshund got to live in Frank Llloyd Wright's famous Fallingwater house along with all her brothers and sister. Now, the lucky wiener dog's story is being told in the beautiful book, The Dachshund of Fallingwater, written and illustrated by Cara Armstrong, curator of education at Fallingwater.

Apparently, Moxie didn't just get to live in a great house in a dramatic setting, she also got to eat bacon and eggs for breakfast. Guess she kept her girlish figure by patrolling the grounds and rock climbing. Try and spot her in the illustration below.

Apart from being fun, this book is also designed to teach children about architecture.

Texas wiener dog adopts four kittens

The Graham Leader in Texas has the story of Jackie-O, a mother Dachshund who who has been nursing four stray kittens along with two puppies of her own for the past month. Growing up in a blended interspecies family has the kittens thinking they're dogs and the puppies using the litter box, but everybody gets a long just fine, according to the article.

Here's some of the background:

The kittens were found in a warehouse at Swan right after a severe storm. (Kim Baxter of the Young County Humane Society Shelter) said the storm likely scared the mother cat away. “They were in fairly good condition,” she said. “You could tell they had been nursing.”
Since the kittens were too young to live on their own, Baxter could either set up around-the-clock feedings, giving them milk every two hours, or she could find a new mother to adopt them.
There was only one problem. The only new mother in the shelter was a dachshund. Baxter said she has heard reports of dogs taking in kittens and feeding them, so she decided to give it a try.
She put one cat in the cage with the mother dog and her two 4-day-old puppies and was surprised to see the dog immediately take to the kitten. She slowly put in the other three.
“She took them right away and started cleaning them,” Baxter said.

Given their background, Baxter wants the kittens to go to homes with dogs. Way to go, Jackie-O. The Daily Doxie wishes we knew a little more about you.

Florida Dachshund bites trick-or-treater, age 3

ABC News reports:

The boy's mother, Cadara Ballard told deputies she took her son to Spring Hill to trick or treat in a relative's neighborhood. He was wearing a costume, that wasn't identified in the police report. However, the report does say the three-year-old was not wearing underwear.

Ballard said, in the report, "as they opened the door one of the small dogs nipped her son on the (privates)... She stated her son was not wearing underwear at that time because he does not like to wear them."

The mother is threatening a civil suit.

Dachshund spends six days eight feet under

Despite the ordeal of being stuck in a badger hole for nearly a week, Lucy, the English sausage dog, is now fine. The local paper has all the details on her dramatic rescue:

Animal rescue specialist Anton Phillips used listening equipment and a snake eye camera to examine the network of tunnels but could find no sign of Lucy.

On the fifth day of their daily visits to the sett Mr West, 58, detected a faint whimper using a listening probe made with a plastic funnel and pipe.

“At first I though I was imaging it, but then I realised it was for real,” he said.

Fashion designer Norma Kamali, who's credited with making sweats fashionable (is that a good thing?) is also a Dachshund owner and technology lover. Given all that, it's not all that surprising to discover that her wiener dog Zeke has his own blog. A piebald from Louisiana, Zeke is super cute but we're wondering if his use of all caps is to compensate for his size.

Rolling Dog Ranch Founders get ASPCA award

Today at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan, the 2009 ASPCA Humane Awards were presented. The Henry Bergh Award went to the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary, which has been featured before here at the Daily Dachshund and Dog News:

Steve Smith and Alayne Marker founded the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Ovando, Montana, in December 2000. The couple left their corporate jobs in Seattle and relocated to Montana fulltime to devote themselves to animal rescue. Their mission was to turn 160 acres of open grassland and cottonwoods into a sanctuary for animals with special needs -- those pets who are least likely to be adopted and most likely to be euthanized in traditional shelters. The animal sanctuary is now home to approximately 70 animals, nearly two-thirds of whom are blind.

And, since we don't want to be dog-ist, we should also mention that Nora the piano playing cat won "Cat of the Year."

A police blotter makes entertaining reading apart from the fact that we never get to find out how it all ended.

5:15 p.m. — A woman from the 15000 block of Wolf Mountain Road reported a small “wiener dog” was in her yard and trying to bite her children.

Costume contest for your four-legged friends at Blvd. 16:

The "Sit, Bark, Sip" happy hour includes $3-$5 snacks for both you and your pooch, as well as cocktail and beer specials. (Duke might want to hold off on the Cosmos though.)
