Authorities said they believe 20 people were aboard the Volare, a 50-foot cabin cruiser based out of Stockton, California, when it was hit by a wave, causing it to capsize.

The person who died was taken to the shore severely injured and, despite CPR being administered, was pronounced dead, officials said. He has not been identified but authorities said he was an adult male.

Three people were taken to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition. They were expected to be released later Tuesday.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen told reporters that authorities believe that there was some kind of memorial service that the 20 passengers, all adults and mostly comprised of family members, were engaging in on the vessel when it capsized.

The U.S. Coast Guard will continue the search-and-rescue efforts for the three missing passengers. The San Francisco Fire Department said it initially received a call for a fire on the boat at 3:30 p.m. local time. However, authorities said they haven’t yet seen evidence that there was a fire on board.

Fire officials said the location of the home — set back from the roadway — presented “initial challenges” for firefighters, in addition to the several roaming horses on the property that needed to be safely secured. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

“The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District reminds the community that working smoke alarms save lives,” the agency said in a press release. “Test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries as recommended, and practice a home fire escape plan so everyone knows how to get out safely in the event of a fire.”

The fire is burning on Kearney Court near Penn Valley, around the Nevada and Yuba county line, according to Cal Fire. The fire started at 4:42 p.m. Tuesday and has burned 41 acres as of 7:20 a.m. Wednesday.

All evacuation orders and warnings have since been lifted.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said all residents may return home and are urged to use caution on their way back as crews continue to work in the area.

The Elephant Fire has so far burned 6,436 acres and is 5% contained North of Loyalton and Highway 49. Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for the area.

SCSO said deputies responded to reports from a community member that there was an illegal drone in the area of the Elephant Fire, where firefighting aircraft were operating.

The circumstances resulted in the aircraft being temporarily grounded, as deputies identified the person with the drone and ensured that it no longer posed a threat to firefighting efforts.

The investigation determined that the drone was interfering with active firefighting aircraft and was at an altitude exceeding legal operating limits. Deputies also determined that the drone was within airspace that was closed under a Temporary Flight Restriction established for wildfire suppression operations.

CAL FIRE personnel are fighting the blaze using airdrops and have crews on the ground. “Air and ground resources are making progress working in steep terrain,” a post from the CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit account on X states. “The fire is burning light and flashy fuels, oak woodland and brush.”

The fire is burning north of Sonoma Highway, near several wineries, including St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, Ledson Winery & Vineyards, as well as the historical landmark, the William Hood House.

Firefighters are actively battling the wildfire, located west of Highway 39 near the mouth of San Gabriel Canyon. The fire has a slow rate of spread and no homes are threatened at this time, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Six firefighting helicopters have been dispatched to the fire. The fire remains uncontained as of 11 p.m.

“Firefighters and helicopters are making good progress,” the L.A. County Fire Department said. Highway 39 is closed at Sierra Madre Avenue due to the fire. The Azusa Police Department issued a statement Monday night saying that there are no evacuation orders in effect at this time.

“The Azusa Police Department is working closely with our fire and emergency management partners and will provide updates if conditions change or if protective actions become necessary,” Azusa PD said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said Monday morning that crews are holding containment lines and mopping up hotspots, with the blaze 39% contained.

“No further fire growth is expected,” county fire officials said.

The blaze broke out Friday afternoon in rural, rugged terrain near Llano, a community 25 miles southeast of Palmdale. Evacuation warnings and road closures remain in effect for two zones near the fire area because of “potential interior fire behavior and a heavy presence of emergency vehicles.”

“While all evacuation orders were downgraded Sunday and no further fire growth is expected, active winds mean residents may still see localized smoke and brief interior flare-ups well within the established burn area,” the fire department’s release said.

The Summit Fire first broke out in a rural area south of Llano, a community situated 25 miles southeast of Palmdale, around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Cal Fire says.

It started spreading quickly through rugged, mountainous terrain into the Angeles National Forest, causing a multi-agency response including forestry officials, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Cal Fire and the San Bernardino County Fire Department; the latter department was deployed because the fire started close to the L.A.-San Bernardino County line, but it has not spread to San Bernardino County itself.

By Saturday morning, the Summit Fire had spread to roughly 2,700 acres and no containment was reported. Despite the hot weather throughout the day, firefighters worked hard to put out hotspots and stop the spread of the fire, something that continued through the overnight hours once temperatures dropped.

The concerns come three years after the California Public Utilities Commission allowed Waymo and Cruise to expand self-driving vehicle operations in San Francisco. Since then, hundreds of autonomous vehicles have become part of daily life in the city, but firefighters say they have also created challenges during some emergency responses.

“Anytime we are blocked by any autonomous vehicle that matters, and we don’t want that to continue to happen,” said Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department. The department has been documenting incidents involving autonomous vehicles for years, according to Elias.

Cal Fire gave an update at 4 p.m. Sunday that the fire had burned 6,436 acres. The Elephant Fire began around 3 p.m. Saturday just north of Loyalton and east of State Highway 49, Cal Fire officials reported on their incident page.

The evacuation warning for Zone LAS-451-A in Lassen County has been updated to an order, and a new warning is in place for Zone LAS-671-B in Lassen County and PLU 104-A in Plumas County, fire officials said.

The fire is 5% contained and there is high potential for it to spread overnight and affect the areas along Scott Road, Chilcoot, and Highway 395 near Hallelujah Junction.

The fire primarily consuming grass with some brush and timber. Ridgetop winds, dry fuels and difficult terrain are proving to be a challenge for firefighters. No injuries have been reported at this time and the fire’s cause is still under investigation, Cal Fire said.

The fire first broke out shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday in the 8500 block of N. Sunland Boulevard. It took over 100 firefighters approximately 34 minutes to extinguish the blaze, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported.

The fire heavily damaged El Compadre, a beloved market and restaurant in the neighborhood. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed an arson team was called to the scene and is actively investigating the fire as possible arson.

Gerardo Salcedo, the son of the business owner, said police showed the family surveillance video of a man on a bike pulling up overnight. Salcedo said the man pushed a bottle through the mail slot, and minutes later, the business was up in flames. He said the family does not know who would target the business or why.

“Everybody’s sad, you know, my dad worked 30 years. He worked three jobs to afford this place. He also worked here and he bought it nine years ago,” Salcedo said. “He’s been trying to be nice to as many people as he can. He tries to help out the community and to just have everything taken away from him in 20 minutes is tough.”

Sky5 footage showed heavy smoke billowing into the air as the collection of vehicles continued burning.

Forty-one firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department surrounded the property and worked to stop the flames from spreading to nearby structures. The blaze was extinguished in just under an hour.

“Firefighters found one patient who was medically evaluated but refused transport to a hospital,” LAFD said. The cause of the fire remains unclear and arson investigators were notified. No firefighters were injured during the incident.
