Fire victims in Altadena said they’re still waiting for the help they were promised more than a year after the devastating Eaton Fire.

Now, as Governor Gavin Newsom pushes a new wildfire recovery proposal in his state budget, survivors said they’re fed up with delays and are demanding answers about billions in relief money.

“Our community needs serious support from the state that claims to protect us,” said Adriana Bautista with Altadena Earthseed Community Land Trust.

Los Angeles fire victims are begging California to help them rebuild as Governor Newsom is hoping legislators will approve his budget. Part of the nearly $350 billion budget proposes a $100 million fund to help wildfire victims afford loans to rebuild their homes.

That’s in addition to the $2.5 billion relief money he promised wildfire victims. “This money will be made available immediately,” he said last January. “We want to get these dollars out in real-time so there’s no anxiety and stress associated with that.” Fifteen months later, Eaton Fire victims said it’s been nothing but anxiety and stress, as they plan another trip to Sacramento to ask what happened to the money.

“In February of this year, we saw state records that prove there was around $800 million available in February,” said Bautista. “The state has been lying to our community. Governor Newsom has been lying to our community.”

VIDEO: Dozens of residents remain displaced from their homes Thursday after a fast-moving fire tore through a low-income apartment building in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood earlier this week.

The fire, which broke out Tuesday night at 285 Turk St., left 15 units temporarily uninhabitable and 46 people, including five children in need of temporary long-term shelter.

“We didn’t see a lot of flame or smoke, so it really came upon us suddenly,” said resident Mike Beauchamp. It was just after 11 p.m. when the building’s alarm system began to echo through the halls.

The San Francisco Fire Department faced a unique challenge in containing the blaze. The fire originated in a lightwell — a vertical shaft designed to provide air and daylight to bathrooms and kitchens in buildings.

“What happened was the fire traveled vertically and got within the walls,” said Lt. Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department. “Our crews were on every floor, in every kitchen and bathroom having to basically destroy the walls to get into where the fire was hiding.”

While the fire was fully extinguished by 2:30 a.m., the aggressive tactics required to save the structure, combined with the volume of water used to douse the hidden flames, left a number of apartments badly damaged.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Beauchamp. “They saved us, and yeah I think the new fire alarm system that we have.”

A singular rollover crash involving a Tesla sparked the brush fire burning in San Bernardino County, officials confirmed Thursday. The Chino Valley Fire Department said the Grand Fire, which ignited Wednesday night in Chino Hills, has burned about 30 acres near the border with Diamond Bar.

Officials said the fire is 50% contained as firefighters work to clean up lines and mop up hot spots. Firefighters say cooler temperatures and increased humidity, helped them get the upper hand. The fire initially sparked evacuation orders and warnings for nearby residents, but they have since been lifted. One firefighter was reportedly transported to a local hospital with a minor injury.

VIDEO: An arson investigation was launched after fire at a Walmart in Suisun City on Wednesday, according to officials.

Suisun City fire crews responded to a fire after 10:30 p.m. at the Walmart on Walters Road after multiple reports of a fire inside the store and people evacuating the building. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm fire after confirmed reports of ongoing evacuations, the fire department said.

When crews first arrived, they reported seeing smoke, active fire conditions and the sprinkler system on inside the store.

Crews from the Fairfield, Vacaville, Travis Air Force Base, and Vallejo fire departments assisted to help contain the fire.

The Suisun City Police Department also responded, helping evacuating store employees and customers, as the store was still open.

The fire was successfully contained, there was smoke and water damage throughout the store, resulting in significant damage to contents and merchandise, officials said.

Walmart announced that the store will be closed temporarily until further notice. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One person was killed after a vehicle plunged roughly 200 feet down an embankment and caught fire overnight in East County, authorities said.

According to San Miguel Fire & Rescue officials, calls came in shortly after midnight reporting a rubbish fire in the area of 3180 La Cresta Road, which is located in the unincorporated community of Crest.

However, when crews arrived on scene, firefighters discovered a vehicle had left the roadway and crashed into steep brush-covered terrain below. Officials said poor visibility caused by darkness, heavy brush and the distance from the roadway likely led to the initial reports being mistake for a vegetation or rubbish fire.

Firefighters worked through difficult terrain to reach the burning vehicle, described as a 2003 Ford Explorer, and extinguish the flames. Once crews accessed the wreckage, they discovered a body inside the car. The incident then transitioned into a recovery operation.

Evacuation orders and warnings were lifted after a 30-acre brush fire in a San Bernardino County neighborhood threatening some 650 nearby homes was brought under control Wednesday night.

The blaze, dubbed the Grand Fire, was first reported at 7:13 p.m. near the Chino Hills intersection of Grand Avenue and Pleasant Hill Drive, officials with Cal Fire confirmed. It quickly grew to about 30 acres by 8:15 p.m.

Fire officials upgraded the response to second alarm as the blaze threatened the community, deploying 250 firefighters, 20 engines, three helicopters, two bulldozers, a water tender and six hand crews.

The fire was spreading at a moderate rate, with early reports suggesting it had the potential to grow to 200 acres, though hours later, in a 9:30 p.m. update, fire officials said the blaze was holding at 30 acres in part because of cooler nighttime temps.

By 10:30 p.m., officials reported that firefighters had made significant progress on containing the blaze and that crews would remain on scene throughout the night.

“Grand Avenue between Grand Avenue Park and the city limit will remain closed until further notice,” fire officials added.

VIDEO: Cal Fire crews from across the North Coast gathered in Southern Humboldt this week for annual readiness drills designed to prepare firefighters for the upcoming wildfire season.

The multi-day training exercises, taking place near Redway on Green Diamond Resource Company property, is bringing together crews from Humboldt, Del Norte and Mendocino counties to test physical conditioning, safety procedures and emergency response skills before peak fire season begins.

Robin Noel with the Cal Fire Mendocino Unit said the annual drills are intended to evaluate whether crews are prepared to respond to difficult wildfire conditions.

“This is a drill we put on every year and tests the performance of our firefighters and our captains,” Noel said. “The intent is to get the crews ready for fire season.”

According to Noel, firefighters spend about two months training ahead of the readiness evaluations. The exercises are designed to simulate some of the toughest conditions crews could encounter while working on the fire line.

VIDEO: More than two-dozen workers on an offshore natural-gas rig were rescued in Santa Barbara County after the station caught fire Monday.

Around 7 a.m., authorities responded to a fire and possible explosion at the facility, which is located about 9 miles off the coast of Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard had the fire under control roughly three hours later. Two of the 26 workers suffered minor injuries, officials said. A 1,000-yard safety zone is in effect around the platform.

The natural-gas rig is no longer operational. Worker were performing “decommissioning operations” when the fire started, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The facility was built in 1981. When active, the station only produced natural gas.

VIDEO: Tucked away in an isolated corner of beautiful Mission Bay is one of the oldest boat and ski clubs in America and it’s now facing its greatest challenge.

Over the weekend something happened and the Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club went up in flames.

“Early Saturday morning the 911 call went out and the firefighters showed up in five minutes. They had 18 fire trucks and more than 80-firefighters who saved most of the clubhouse and every boat in the parking lot”, says Steve Parrott, the Commodore of the Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club.

As fire inspectors try to track down the cause of the blaze, club members are extremely grateful that the whole place didn’t burn to the ground.

But if you know anything about this club and these members, even a fire is not going to hold them down. The mother’s day brunch planned for Sunday happened on Sunday, despite the fire. They simply moved the celebration outside.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has awarded Burton’s Fire a second major contract for 30 additional Rosenbauer Model 34 Type 3 wildland engines, expanding its wildland fleet as the agency continues to modernize its apparatus.

The latest order follows an initial 2025 contract for 15 units, bringing CAL FIRE’s total commitment to 45 Rosenbauer Model 34 Type 3 engines.

The expansion of the wildland fleet is intended to strengthen wildfire response capability, improve firefighter safety and support operations during increasingly severe fire seasons.

Rosenbauer America, a manufacturer of firefighting apparatus and emergency response technology, produces the Model 34 Type 3 at its facility in Lyons, South Dakota.

The engine is designed for wildland and all-risk firefighting, particularly in rugged terrain and wildland–urban interface environments.

The Model 34 Type 3 includes a Darley two-stage fire pump, a 500-gallon water tank, an off-road capable chassis and design features intended to improve stability, mobility and crew safety during extended operations in high-heat and high-smoke conditions.

Two Northern California tribes are formalizing a partnership aimed at strengthening wildfire readiness and expanding cultural burning, with the Yurok Fire Department taking on a larger role in Blue Lake Rancheria’s fire operations.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James and Blue Lake Rancheria Chairman Jason Ramos, the Yurok Fire Department will oversee Blue Lake Rancheria’s fire management operations and provide expertise and assistance for cultural burning initiatives.

The agreement is intended to improve the Rancheria’s capacity to prepare for, respond to and recover from wildland fires.

“The Yurok Tribe has been a valued partner and brings significant expertise in wildland fire management,” Ramos said. “We are pleased to see tribes collaborating in this critically important area, an effort that will benefit our local communities.”

James said the partnership builds on a shared commitment to safety and tribal self-determination.

“We are always happy to share our knowledge and expertise with fellow tribes,” he said. “I’d like to sincerely thank the Blue Lake Rancheria for selecting the Yurok Fire Department. This partnership will strengthen tribal sovereignty, self-determination and safety within our respective communities.”

VIDEO: Two people are dead after a fire in a bridge utility vault in Downtown Fresno. It happened just before 8:30 a.m. Monday at Fresno and H streets.

Investigators say several people from the unhoused community were seen coming in and out of the area shortly before the smoke was first reported.

Firefighters had to coordinate with PG&E to shut off the power to nearly 600 customers before entering the utility vault to try to put out the blaze.

Once they got inside, they began a primary search and came across a body.

“They pulled the person out, the patient was deceased and as they continued to go back inside to conduct a primary search, they found another victim who was also deceased,” says Fresno Fire Chief Billy Alcorn.

Neither person has been identified yet. Chief Alcorn says it appears the unhoused were trying to live in the vault and may have gained access to it by digging through the side of the bridge.

He adds crews will continue searching to ensure no one else was injured in the fire.

Chief Alcorn says this utility vault serves as a main distribution center to the downtown area, so several buildings went without power into the afternoon.
