PHOTOS: A fire broke out in a trash compactor in Polk County, prompting the Copper Basin Fire and Rescue to remind the public of trash disposal guidelines. Copper Basin firefighters responded to the fire in a trash compactor Tuesday, June 16, at the Polk County Convenience Center on Glassy Creek.

Crews found the fire burning within the compacted trash and were able to extinguish it, preventing further damage.

Firefighters have not yet determined what caused the fire. However, items such as batteries, propane cylinders, fuel containers, hot ashes, chemicals or other hazardous materials can create significant fire hazards if not disposed of properly.

Copper Basin Fire and Rescue says rules posted at convenience centers are in place for public safety, and urges everyone to follow those guidelines. They remind the public never to put prohibited items in the compactor or household trash bins.

PHOTOS: Firefighters responded to a construction-site equipment fire involving a Komatsu excavator, where smoke could be seen rising from the large machine as crews worked to bring the blaze under control. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, off of Franklin Road (Hwy 96) in Murfreesboro.

At the scene, firefighters in full protective gear worked to douse the flames coming from the tracked excavator, after carrying their hose lines from the truck to the fire. Hose lines could be seen stretched across the dirt worksite.

Smoke appeared to be coming from the cab and engine area of the machine, which was positioned near piles of cleared brush and debris.

The fire created a challenging response environment because of the size of the machinery, the heat generated by heavy-duty equipment, and the amount of combustible material nearby.

Crews worked from multiple angles, including around the cab, engine compartment, and rear housing of the excavator, to cool hot spots and prevent flames from spreading into the surrounding brush.

The good news from the scene is that no injuries were reported.

A detached garage on Quail Drive in La Vergne sustained significant fire damage Monday morning, but emergency crews contained the flames before they could spread to nearby homes.

La Vergne Fire Rescue rushed to the scene at 9:52 a.m. A City of La Vergne employee driving through the neighborhood noticed smoke coming from the property, knocked on the door to alert the residents, and dialed 911.

Firefighters arrived within three minutes and found heavy smoke pouring from the two-story detached garage. Crews moved quickly and brought the fire under control by 10:12 a.m.

Battalion Chief Patrick Hood reported that 21 total personnel responded to the emergency. The response included three fire engines, one truck company, and Box 55 Rehab support. Crews searched the burning building and confirmed no one was inside, though two vehicles were parked in the garage during the fire.

VIDEO: The Metro Nashville Police Department said an attempted robbery outside the Ford Ice Center in Antioch escalated into gunfire that struck both the ice rink and the Nashville Fire Department headquarters.

According to an arrest affidavit, MNPD officers responded to the Ford Ice Center on Hickory Hollow Parkway shortly after midnight Friday for reports of people shooting at each other.

Investigators said the victim was walking with two men when one of them appeared to try to rob him at gunpoint.

The shooting happened at a location frequently used by families, walkers and children throughout the Antioch community. A playground and walking trails are near the Ford Ice Center in Antioch.

Officials with the Ford Ice Center told WSMV4 the facility was closed to the public when the shooting happened.

However, workers were inside working on the ice at the time. Officials said those workers did not hear the gunfire and operations were not disrupted. They do have security when the Ford Ice Center is open to the public.

MNPD said no bystanders were injured. The investigation remains ongoing.

According to the affidavit, officers recovered shell casings, a backpack and bullet damage at the scene.

Police said surveillance video and witness statements helped investigators piece together what happened.

VIDEO: After more than two dozen train cars derailed Thursday and caused a fire in Morgan County that was still burning Friday, first responders used a drone to get a critical view of the scene. Cleanup efforts began Friday morning after federal investigators approved the removal of some of the derailed train cars.

“The Lansing community, it is affecting them because I’m sure they weren’t sure what was going on,” said Peggy Morgan, store manager of The Unicorn Fund in Wartburg.
Update on Norfolk Southern crash from Morgan County EMA Director, Sheriff

A Norfolk Southern Train derailment turned into a major emergency for Morgan County. As smoke filled the sky, crews turned to the air for answers. A view from above provided by a drone helped officials assess the size of the derailment, the intensity of the fire, and any potential threats to nearby residents.

“Provide them that critical information so they can make the necessary calls they need, get the resources they need in there at the time, and make those decisions pretty quick,” explained Michael Cox, a Blue Line Security Administrator. “The drone, it’s a lot safer. So, put the drone in the air, we can get there quicker. We can get eyes on the scene. We’re not going to put lives in danger. When I got the drone over in the air, it could actually see through the smoke and the fire. It was more than four cars on the ground. We were counting 15 plus cars.”

As a precaution, nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as crews worked to assess the danger.

VIDEO: Rural Metro Fire said it was called to a major fire at Cheers at Choto Bar & Grill, located at the Choto Marina, Wednesday morning. According to Jeff Bagwell with Rural Metro, crews responded to the fire just before 7 a.m. When they arrived on the scene, they found the two-story building nearly fully engulfed in flames.

Bagwell said crews were forced to work from the outside because the building had collapsed on itself. Despite this, he said crews were later able to get inside to put out a lot of hidden spot fires in the rubble.

Bagwell added crews will remain on the scene until all the hidden fires are exposed and extinguished.

Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby fuel pumps and the boats docked in the marina.

No injuries were reported, Bagwell said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

VIDEO: With the possibility of heavy rainfall still in the forecast after flash flooding led to a woman needing to be rescued from her car Monday, the Knoxville Fire Department is warning drivers to be watchful of road conditions.

Knoxville Fire Department was called to help multiple people whose vehicles were stuck in water amid flash flooding Monday, including a woman whose car became trapped in rising water on Fifth Avenue near Hall of Fame.

“Most of our calls were folks that were in vehicles that were stuck in some kind of water. I would say our most treacherous or dangerous sounding call was the call at Fifth Avenue. The person had gotten almost under the railroad bridge there. She was stuck in her car. The water was rising quickly. So thankfully we were able to get there pretty fast and get her out,” KFD Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks said.

A City of Knoxville spokesperson told 6 News that the city’s rain gauge at First Creek recorded over an inch of rain in the span of 15 minutes, and more than four inches of rain over the course of four hours. The spokesperson added that while the portion of Fifth Avenue where the woman became stuck is prone to flash flooding as it dips below ground level, there is a pump there to help water recede quickly.

VIDEO: As Tim and Tiffany McPherson recover from severe burns at a Nashville hospital, their family says one thing is clear: Tim’s actions in the moments after a devastating explosion likely saved his wife’s life. The Carroll County couple, owners of the food truck, ‘TNT Tacos,’ were inside preparing for the day when an explosion erupted, engulfing the trailer in flames earlier this month.

According to their daughter, Jada Pastrana, Tim was attempting to light the grill when it suddenly exploded. “My dad said that the grill wasn’t turning on, and when he went to ignite the grill, it literally exploded from the bottom up,” Pastrana said.

Pastrana said the blast threw both Tim and Tiffany across the truck. Tim landed near the door. Tiffany was thrown toward the sinks at the opposite end of the trailer, where she became trapped as flames spread around her.

The Rutherford County Fire & Rescue Department reports that crews responded to a deadly house fire in Mt. Juliet over the weekend. RCFR reports that the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the deadly single-family home fire on Ashwood Drive that occurred on Saturday.

Deputies were sent to the home at about 6 p.m. for a welfare check and discovered there had previously been a fire and asked RCFR to respond. Crews did not find an active fire upon arrival.

Fire investigators were then called to the scene where two individuals and a dog were found dead inside of the home.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating this incident alongside the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, La Vergne Police Department, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

“The investigation is on-going and no further information is available for release at this time,” RCFR reports.

VIDEO: More information has been released regarding the structure fire that occurred on Friday at a home in the 5700 block of Keysburg Road in the Adams area. According to Adams Fire Chief Donovan Tucker, the home is considered a total loss. Fortunately, no injuries to residents or first responders were reported.

One of the biggest concerns during the fire involved the large number of dogs at the residence. According to Tucker, approximately 20 dogs were on the property. Five dogs were rescued directly from the burning home, and EMS personnel provided medical care to several of the animals. One smaller dog suffering from smoke inhalation was treated using a specialized pet oxygen mask and is reportedly doing well.

Despite early concerns, officials confirmed that all of the dogs survived the fire.

Animal Control responded to assist with the animals. According to Tucker, the dogs repeatedly attempted to return to the home and were also observed checking on firefighters as crews took breaks during the incident.
