VIDEO: The City of Bristol, Tennessee, announced on Tuesday that Dwayne Honaker will serve as the interim fire chief after a nationwide search to fill the role. Honaker, a 29-year veteran of the Bristol Tennessee Fire Department (BTFD), will take the reins on April 27 when current chief Mike Carrier retires.

Carrier announced his plans to retire in the fall, and a nationwide search for his replacement followed.

According to the city, Honaker first joined the BTFD in 1996.

He has served as battalion chief since 2008, and in that role, he oversaw operations of one of the department’s three shifts and was in command of active scenes.

As interim chief, Honaker will lead the 80 members and five stations of the BTFD.

“I am honored to accept the Interim Fire Chief position and to be able to continue service to the community in this new capacity,” Honaker said in a news release.

“My focus over the coming months will be on providing steady leadership within the department, supporting our dedicated team of women and men within the department, and ensuring that our community continues to receive the highest possible level of emergency service.”

VIDEO: Crews responded to a large fire in Cocke County Friday afternoon. Cocke County Fire Chief Cody Keys said a call for the fire came in around 12:42 p.m. for a junk pile on fire at Limitless Solutions off of Old Asheville Highway.

“When we get here and we see the plume of smoke that we had, I mean, it was a lot of fire. My first thing that goes through my head is, are we going to have enough water? Where’s my hydrants at? Where’s everybody at?” Keys said.

“After I seen how large the fire was, I ended up doing a county all-call. I got with the city chief and we made the decision to do a county all-call. So we got the rest of all of Cocke County volunteers, including Newport Rescue Squad and Cosby and Parrottsville and Del Rio.”

Chief Keys said his main concern was not knowing what items were near the fire and what would happen if it spread.

VIDEO: It didn’t take long for a new vehicle at the Parrottsville Fire Department to go out on its first call. The department recently purchased a new side by side and held a “push in” ceremony Wednesday. Just a day after, “Attack 14″ was sent on its first deployment to help with a wild land fire in Del Rio.

The department said the side by side can hold 70 gallons of water, five gallons of foam, has a top rack that can hold a stokes basket and has the ability to get to a place quicker and safer.

PFD predicts “Attack 14″ will be used about one to two times a week during fire season. It will also help with search and rescue missions and other calls.

Fire Chief Jacob Henry said this wouldn’t have been possible without the community’s support.

PHOTOS: The Shelby County Fire Department worked a house fire that was possibly started by an unattended fire pit in Shelby County on Tuesday. Firefighters got reports Tuesday evening that the entire back of a home on Forest Meadow was burning. When firefighters arrived, they said that heavy smoke was pushing from all sides of the home, and flames broke out through the roof.

Forest Hill-Irene Road was closed to all traffic because the supply lines from the hydrant were across that roadway, and the large diameter hoses were laid out across all lanes.

SCFD suspects that the origin of this fire was near the back wall of the house, and the possible source was an unattended fire pit that was set before the homeowner left the house.

According to the fire department, the investigation is ongoing. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said that there has been an uptick in the number of house fires.

VIDEO: Crews with the Nashville Fire Department’s hazardous materials team responded to an explosion that injured one person on Wednesday afternoon. The call came in around 2:21 p.m. from the 900 block of Main Street. An NFD spokesperson told News 2 that a 911 caller said an explosion had happened inside a building and caused a wall to collapse.

Those inside the building were told to evacuate, the NFD spokesperson added.

When authorities arrived, the spokesperson noted there was “nothing visible” from the outside.

One person was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to treat burns, but they’re in non-critical condition.

An NFD spokesperson later added the injured person was using acetone to strip the floor in the building before lighting a cigarette.
