When crews arrived, they found a large two-story home fully involved. The fire had also spread to a pickup truck, a motorcycle, a boat and two acres of wooded area.

LCFR said personnel worked to stop the progress of the fire and extinguish it.

As a result of the area being dry, LCFR said officials had to draft water from a nearby creek to extinguish the flames.

The fire department posted a message from Chief Shane Suthers on social media on Monday. In the message, Suthers said he wanted to spend more time with family after serving as a fire chief for the past decade.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Suthers said. “Over the years, this role has required countless hours away from home and many missed opportunities with my family. I believe the time has come for me to step back, spend more time with those who have supported me throughout this journey, and allow new leadership to guide the department into its next chapter.”

Suthers said serving the community has been one of the greatest honors of his life and that he plans to continue serving as a firefighter.

The Maury County Fire Department said on Thursday that several fires have emerged in the last few days “on top of our regular incidents we respond to.” The causes for the fires have varied, with reasons including fallen power lines, a mower that caught on fire, illegal trash burning and controlled burns.

“Units have responded to 10 brush fires that have consumed more than 30 acres, trees, and today resulted in two outbuildings on fire with one completely destroyed,” the fire department said.

Those fires have impacted several areas, including Mooresville Pike, Rally Hill Road, Southpoint Ridge Road, Scott Hollow Road, Campbellsville Pike, Joe Brown Road, South Cross Bridges, New Lewisburg Highway and Bell Road.

“With rain on the horizon, we are requesting you pause your burning until after we get some moisture,” the fire department said. “Every surrounding county is also dealing with similar call volumes and their resources have also been stretched.”

Dandridge Fire Chief Andrew Riley said every truck in the department’s fleet runs on diesel, including trucks holding 50 and 65 gallons. He said trucks continue running once they arrive on scene until they return to the station.

“Well, diesel, for us, is about almost like water in the fire truck itself. We have to have diesel to be able to drive our trucks to the scene,” Riley said.

Diesel is averaging $6.14 a gallon, according to Riley. He said the department builds a buffer into its fuel budget, but that buffer may not be enough this budget year.

“Even though we add a little buffer zone in there in the fuel costs, this budget year that we’re dealing with, that buffer zone is probably not going to be enough this time around,” Riley said.

Riley said fuel is used not only to drive to a scene but also while trucks idle on scene, since the pumps require the engines to keep running.
