Generally, when I get home, there is wiggling, wagging and barking. Today, I walked in and there was silence.... And a bag of yarn on the floor! As I turned the corner, I saw a complete mess... The house looked like it had been burglarized!

Denali has proven himself to be very smart! He is able to open cabinets, the dishwasher, the oven and apparently, the pantry! All three of them just looked at me, with their heads hung low... I cam upstairs and turned the corner to find this.....

OMG!!! The three guilty parties ran outside and stayed there whiled cleaned up. All three are now sleeping off the hangover! They are lucky they are cute!!!
15 years ago, when I met, Bruno, I never dreamed how such a little dog could change my life. As the years passed, Bruno and I were inseparable.... He was my best friend and my rock. He never judged, never lied, never hurt me. He loved me, unconditionally, all the time. Bruno helped me through everything from sadness to new jobs to moving to breakups.... you name it, he was there to lick my tears away and offer a happy wag. He slept in bed with me every day for as long as I can remember. He kept me warn and kept me happy! Bruno used to respond to fire calls with me! He would wait patiently in the truck until I returned from the call. He locked me out of the car once he was so happy to see me!! I had to call my Dad to come help. Bruno dispatched with me, drove with me and walked with me. He made my life so happy!

I knew that the day would come that my little best friend and I would have to say goodbye... I had no idea it would so soon after Beau left us.... Bruno has been showing signs of aging over the last 6 months - losing his hearing, limping, getting aggressive with the other dogs.... But he would still wag... Until I came home from work early (0330) Sunday morning. Bruno did not come to see me. When I got into the bedroom, he looked up and no wag. I picked him up and put him into the bed. He looked sad, old and tired. He was very restless and could not get comfortable. His right front paw was turned inward, his gums were dark red, his heart beating fast, panting constantly and shaking. I think Bruno had a stroke. We slept for a little while and then he went to the kitchen. He vomited all over the kitchen and just stood in one spot. No movement, no spunk, just "Mom, I'm so tired"...

I sat on the floor and held him, as the tears flew down my checks onto his familiar coat. We sat in silence together for what seemed like hours. Christa came down and took one look at me and said, "Oh no, Mommy, it's time isn't it?" Yes, it was. I held my buddy a bit longer and snuggled. I remembered everything he and I had been through and all the things he helped me survive. I was not ready for this day.
I tried to feed him several different things and he didn't want anything... Until the cheese dog! He looked at me as if to say "Really, Mom? Fine, I will eat it to make you happy". He didn't want a girl scout cookie :(
So, off we went to the vet, on a Sunday, which was typical for Bruno... We went into a very nice chapel like room, with leather couches for the people and a very plush, comfy bed for my buddy. He knew, I knew and we just looked at each other. It was a long, sad, happy, painful look that shared so much between us over 15 years... He looked so very tired....
The vet came in and gave Bruno the shot. He didn't flinch, he just looked at me with those gigantic eyes, as I held his head in my hands and pet his soft head for the last time. Bruno went very peacefully... I am sure he and Beau were playing immediately. I, am not yet at peace with my best buddy going to heaven. He is sorely missed and the house is not the same. He no longer follows me everywhere or pushes open doors to check on me. It is a very sad, lonely house, even with 3 other dogs.
The next week, we went again. Denali was so excited when we arrived and began whining, wiggling and jumping! He got his vest put on and up the ramp, to the pool we went. I went to the other side, and Denali came in with the trainer. This time, once he was in - he swam on his own to me! He was so excited!! He swam back and went up the ramp. He still wanted his Mom, so he ran around to the side of the pool and jumped in (who needs a ramp) and swam to me all by himself!! Good boy, Denali! He's going be a great swimmer!

Meet and greet....

Introducing a new dog to the pack is always interesting... We brought Denali home and thought it would be best that we take him and his 2 new brothers and 1 new sister for a walk. He waited outside sniffing his new outdoors. Louie was the first the meet Denali. He came running down the stairs at full speed from excitement to meet his new friend. The sniffed and wiggled and sniffed some more! That was the easy introduction.
I chatted with them and realized this was it!! At three weeks old, Joe, Christa and I went to meet them. There were 11 and they were ALL soooooo cute! 5 weeks to wait.... We were the 5th pick and we really wanted the one with the red collar "Mutley". We arrived today at noon, still not knowing who we were going to get. We walked in, and there he was! I picked my little one up from school today and we went to the vet. I was a bit teary when inside picking up what was left of my dear friend. My daughter and I walked, hand in hand outside, and I lost it. Sobbed liked a little kid who just lost their best friend. I suppose I have. I remember taking Beau to the vet for his first check up when I got him. He made everyone smile, as he was quite talkative. He also showed off by "sitting handsome". He got a lot of biscuits that day!
As I sit here crying, I think of all the happy moments Beau gave me. He was a goofball who made me smile. He was a protector to the whole family. He was a chow hound. He was a friend that snuggled with me when I needed it. I wish we could snuggle now....
width="200" />Arrived home from Spring Break vacation. Only 3 dogs... No deep, boisterous bark. No nudges on my elbow for attention. One would think with 3 dogs, the house would be noisy. But it wasn't. It was quiet, lonely and felt empty. Beau's best buddy, Bruno has been sulking, with no tail wags...

We all went to bed and I began the nightly routine, which includes biscuits. Instinctively, I grabbed 4 biscuits and handed them out. I had on extra.... I broke down in tears, again.
It is incredible how much 1 adopted black lab can change lives. He will be missed for a very, very long time.

Sadness...

I miss Beau... I am sad. I feel empty. We left to visit family the evening of the day Beau died. So I have been having fun and distracted. But, at night, when it's quiet and I am winding down - I miss my labby.... I am afraid to go home and look for him, without him being there. Without his bark. Without his nudge. Without Beau. I miss Beau... width="270" />We lost one of our best friends today.... As most of you know, Beau has been struggling with arthritis and old age. I came home Saturday night from work and Beau could not get up on his own. His eyes had lost their sparkle. He just looked sad..... I layed with him and we "talked". The next morning, he was ok. He ate, but he grunted, panted and huffed. Beau and I talked about death and life and what an amazing friend he had been to me over the years. I went to work.

I spoke to my husband shortly after I got to work. He said "You were right about Beau. He's not doing well. He threw up". I worked with police officers and was still at the station when I got this call. I began to cry. Several officers asked what was wrong. I told them all of my old pal.... honest, loving and dependable. I had half the station in tears with me...
I came home this morning and went to Beau. He tried to get up, but it was a struggle. So, I got down with him. I layed with him and sobbed. His head hung low, and he looked so forlorn. I hugged him and said. "Buddy, if it's time, it's ok. You just have to tell me". He lifted his head and licked my tears and gave me a wag; as if to say, "it's ok, Mom. It's time for me to go".
I made Beau steak, eggs and french fries. He scarfed them! With a heavy heart, my husband, 5 year old daughter and I took Beau to the vet. He layed completely still the whole car ride there. We were all teary and trying to be strong for Beau. We went into the room where they had layed out a Colorado Rockies blanket for him. They gave him a sedative and we spent our last 10 minutes hugging, petting and kissing Beau. All the while thanking him for everything and telling him how much we loved him. Then, my daughter hugged her labby tight and said "it's ok to go Beau, we understand". To hear those words come from a 5 year old is heart wrenching. She loves her Beau Beau so much, but understood he was in pain. We all stayed with him during his final minutes and he died with his head in my daughter's lap, his butt in mine and his paws in my husband's.
we came home to 3 other, confused doggies, who are still looking for Beau. The saddest thing was the lack of noise. No more Beau bark to greet us....
You will be missed terribly my friend... You were an amazing rescue dog. but, really, we both know it - you rescued me! I love you Beauregard!!! Don't REST in peace, ENJOY doggie heaven, you deserve it my friend!!

Me, Louie & Beau at the Furry Scurry

I started doing the Furry Scurry 4 years ago. I decided to take Godvia the first year, which turned out to be a horrible idea. There are thousands of dogs, and it turned out Diva does not like other dogs (except her brothers). She barked, growled, lunged and tried to eat a little dog!! We did not even get to start the walk. Needless to say, the next year Diva stayed home and Louie made his debut!! Beau came with us that year, but he was quite stiff at the end and stays home now.

Post Furry Scurry Refreshments

The first year, Louie was so much more interested in people and socializing, that we only made it a quarter of the way around the lake! Louie finished the race by sitting in a kiddie pool. The second year, Louie was still enjoying socializing, but we made it halfway around! Last year, Louie figured out how to balance business and pleasure! He made it the whole way around!!!! And he met many, many people. He even made it onto the website and the local news!!!

So, here we are again, getting pledges to help animals in need. Getting psyched for the walk! Here's to another successful Furry Scurry!! If you would like to help Louie in his fundraising efforts, check out his Furry Scurry page!
Apparently, he wanted to do some laundry and fell asleep, after he shut himself in!!! This labby is going to give me a heart attack!

Old guy update

So Beau had his vet check up. He's lost 6 pounds (a good thing!). He was happy and barky at the vet. We upped his rimadyl and he seems to be doing pretty well. All in all, the visit was good! We talked about keeping him comfortable. We will know when "it is time".
Tonight, Beau was different. Not as chatty, a little more limpy, and for the first time ever, I saw sadness in his eyes. I do not claim to know a lot about anything, but I do know dogs..... My big love came over to me while we were all playing "Don't Spill the Beans", breathed a heavy sigh and laid down in my lap. I stroked his head and hugged him. He groaned and sighed. He looked up at me with his sad eyes, and my eyes welled with tears... It was as if to say "Mom, Christmas was wonderful, but it is time".

I held him and cried. My daughter cried. My husband cried. The other three dogs came an laid with us (there is never that much calm in my house!). The discussion with my 5 year old hit a new level tonight. Beau is her favorite and she is heartbroken.
So, please send some good thoughts to my good, old labby. We will be seeing if there are any other options at this point, but he will not suffer. He has been an amazing old friend. Loving, kind and funny. Taking care of his needs is the very least I can do for everything that old boy has done for me.....

I am surrounded by a very large mastiff, who is snoring and exhausted from stealing a very large piece of beef tonight. She ran outside with it and gulped it down. She came back inside, sheepishly wagging her tail, as if to say "sorry, but thanks, it was good!"

I am surrounded by a farting bulldog... Perhaps not such a lovely Christmas thought, but he is a lovely dog. He was the hit of our Christmas party last night and really made people smile.

So here I am, in the midst of dogs, thinking about the true meaning of the season. I all I ever need to do is look to these four heros and I have found the spirit and love of the holiday season.

My Mom and I always had a "date" for Wednesday nights to watch "Beverly Hills, 90210". I worked for a treatment center and usually called Mom during lunch. One particular Wednesday, the boys were acting up and I could not get away. So, I waited until I got home to talk to her. When I got home, it was eerily quiet. Usually, I would be greeted by barks and tail wags. I pulled in and heard nothing...
I went into the house, still quiet. I heard the TV downstairs on "snow" with that loud humming sound. I called to my Mom and got no response. I looked downstairs, and my Mom had died. Laying in the room we called "the pit"..... She had a heart attack. As sad and painful as it all was, she was surrounded... All three dogs were with her. Laying by her side. One had a toy, the other had a ball, the third just laid with her. I remember the faces that I saw when they looked up at me; so sad, so peaceful.... I can't prove it, but I am certain they were with her all afternoon. Once they knew it was ok to leave her side, they began comforting me and continued to do so for many years.
Dogs are wonderful. Dogs are amazing. Dogs are unconditional love defined....... May your dogs give you peace, joy and love on your worst days.... and your best days!
