Sadly, downtown Houston is pretty dead at night with the exception of a few restaurants, some bodegas, and a lot of homeless individuals. For this reason, the existence of a shop like The Tipping Point on Houston's Main Street could not be more important, a beacon of economic and retail rejuvenation for the downtown Houston community. We happened to wander into the store, hearing the sounds of a live DJ emanate from a modern-looking store on an otherwise darkened street. Needless to say, we were curious. As it turned out, the store owners had opened theirs doors to allow a friend to host a party in their space as part of their overall mission of community and reciprocity. The Tipping Point, after all, strives to be a "sneaker lifestyle destination", coupling a well-edited selection of sneakers with art, music, literature, and more. Speaking with one of the owners, The Tipping Point is part of a sincere and impassioned quest to bring cultural and retail diversity back into downtown Houston. Up first, we're pleased to introduce Texas printmaker Debbie Little-Wilson. Having recently moved into a spacious apartment worthy of decorating, we're finally spending money on something other than our business. Naturally, our first inclination is to expand our art collection as we did at the Bayou City Art Festival in Houston with two purchases from Debbie. Debbie was born in Rochester, New York and currently resides in Dripping Springs, Texas. She works in etching, monoprint, illustration, and mixed media. Her nostalgic images, Americana themes, and found imagery lured us into her booth and we're honored to have two of her works now hanging in our Tangier Island themed bedroom. I expect a few more of her works will be listed on our wedding registry down the road..

Enjoy these works by Debbie Little Wilson

>>>Posted by Ali<<<

Weekly Wrap Up 10/06/2009

Holy moly, it's been a busy month! It's our first show in Texas so we're excited to see the crowd's reaction to our artwork in the Lone Star State. Show hours are 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday and our booth number is 342 i. The process began with the creation of two works in the September Song Collection with colors based on fabric swatches and other decorative accessories. These works were then scanned for digitally printing as BOX PRINT reproductions. A total of 32 BOX PRINT reproductions were printed, 16 of each work. After printing, 3 holes were cut from the printed surface. Finally, Dolan created paper collages to appear inside the circle cutouts using Mexico-inspired imagery and affixed this collages behind the printed works to complete the piece. The final works are shown above.

Upcoming Commission: Hyatt Regency Jersey City
This month, we also received a purchase order for guestroom artwork in the renovated Hyatt Regency Jersey City. We've been working on this commission since the fall of 2007 so we're thrilled to see the project come to fruition. We'll be providing 183 BOX PRINT reproductions of the modified Ophelia piece above, each 45" x 36", for rooms in the hotel. I decided to start taking pics of the office views to pass the time. I needed a break. I had just had the pleasure of having my mouth drilled by one of those vile servants of the dental arts, and it was feeling like someone was entertaining a party of tortoises wearing ice skates on my gums, so I needed to be in a place where, if I threw something, no one would get hurt. So I tried my hand at fishing for a day or two, and with a little luck was able to land a few bass and even eat a few. After several days my teeth were still sending rude little love notes to my arms with orders to cut off my head to end the pain, so I packed up the car and started to head back to the city in search of some serious medication and strong booze, possibly taken together.

As I sat in construction traffic on a backroad headed to the interstate, I had the time to take in my surroundings and, in doing so, noticed a hulking house-like shape hidden behind large spruces nestled between birch, cornrow and poison ivy. I took the next road and turned down a winding grassy lane that lead me further from the prying eyes of local farm traffic, and came to a metal gate partially overgrown with wild grapes and honeysuckle. I saw no signs suggesting I keep away, so I hopped the fence and headed towards what I hoped was an abandoned house. One hundred yards down this weedy path I came to the house; a turn of the century two story farm house, whitewashed wooden siding with a small covered porch. Near the house sat a small shed, and in the shed sat a rusting model t, which appeared to be the only thing actually holding the shed in place. Scattered around the automobile like bark falling from a dead tree were scraps of metal, pieces of old license plates, and snipped remnants of barbed wire. By the base of the shed, covered loosely by piled dirt, were a few glass gallon jugs of suspiciously clear liquid, probably old vinegar jugs, although I wanted to guess moonshine.

I headed from the shed to the house, which probably saw its last tenants sometime in the nineties, judging by a calendar hanging on the kitchen wall. However, the articles scattered around the floor told a different story. Kids coloring books suggested birthday parties where Tom Mix and Howdy Doody were the heroes, and the decomposing magazines in the upstairs bedrooms touted man’s foray into the new age of space travel. Since most of the collage materials I use come from these old abandoned houses, I gathered a few handfuls of papers and stuffed them into a backpack, waiting until I got home to sift through them. My way of gathering materials is sometimes childlike. It’s similar to what happens when a kid hits a piñata. Everyone scrambles for candy, and it doesn’t matter what you get, you just go in open handed and then pull your fingers back to inspect your claims. I like to be excited when I get back to the studio and see what my fingers have snagged. I should note here that I am always respectful of the houses while I gather materials. I don’t break windows, I don’t spray paint walls, I don’t pee on the carpet. I try to act as if I am going in to collect specimens that will help tell a larger story, and I try to leave the house with as many of its beautiful accouterments as I can. And the things I bring back with me, these aged souvenirs, are immediately turned into works of art.

Somewhere in Wisconsin, there is a white farm house that just had a shave and a haircut, and its putting on its shingles to dance around in the moonlight tonight. I can hear its piano heart playing along while the screen door slams the rhythm and the crickets spread their midnight basement gossip.

>>> Posted by Dolan <<<

Weekly Wrap Up 09/10/2009

We're sprinting around the studio today getting ready for Renegade Craft Fair this weekend, but wanted to post a quick review of this week's news...

Renegade Craft Fair This Weekend
Over 300 handmade vendors descend on Wicker Park this weekend. Public speaking on the topic of arts business and transitioning from college life to adult life as an artist is an arena very dear to Dolan and such engagements are always of interest. Teaching and motivational speaking is in his blood, as his father has worked as a public school teacher and motivational speaker for over forty years.

John coordinates the UNC-Charlotte Print Media Studio and through the website we viewed some of John's sculptures and prints. Here are a couple of our favorites:

John Ford: "House not a Home: Church Warden (incomplete)" mixed media sculpture, 2009

John Ford: "Fragment 18" intaglio monoprint, 2009

Through the site, we also discovered the work of student Amber Watts and immediately purchased these cards from her Etsy shop:

Handmade Art Cards by Amber Watts

So, Charlotte students: keep your eyes and ears peeled about the possibility of Dolan traveling to UNC-Charlotte in 2010. That about sums it up. If you're looking for fine art and crafts you don't see at all the other fairs in a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere, this is the show for you. We love the organizer (Maria) and the volunteers that come together each year to help support the show. Clear your calendar and head to Bucktown. Bring your whole family in fact (dogs too). It's that kind of show. We'll be located right at the corner of Lyndale and Oakley in booth 188, right in front of the playground. We promise an enormous inventory of originals, DG MINIs, and everything in between. Show hours are 11am-7pm each day and additional information is avaiable from the Bucktown Arts Fest website. See you this weekend. (PS: catch Dolan's artwork in this week's edition of Time Out Chicago and the 2009 Bucktown Arts Fest poster)

Songbird Mirror Collection: featured in this week's Time Out Chicago

Unique Commission with Chicago's syinc
This week, we reconnected with the oh so friendly and professional Karen and Brad of syinc to discuss a unique commmission proposal. Maybe it was the long studio hours, maybe the sudden 20 degree drop in temperature.( thanks Chicago). Whatever the reason, my dampened spirits needed some good ol' soul food revival. Luckily my friend Nadav was visiting from the left coast, and had been flipping through

the Reader (our local paper) when he discovered a little place called Garifuna Flava. I was skeptical at first, with the address at 63rd and Western. However I overcame those fleeting worries of the yuppie class when I took one look at the menu. Dishes made with the flavors of Belize, and prepared by the owner's momma: sounded like the cure for what ailed me. After circling the place like vultures looking for parking (they do have a lot, but it was full) we finally cruised up to a meter and ran across the street to check it out. We were greeted by the nicest gentleman, laid back, and friendly, and so decided to sit up at the bar. As it turns out, our host was also the owner and we immediately launched into some heavy chit chat about the place and the food. We ordered the stewed chicken and kingfish for entrees, and those came with the most amazing sides. The kingfish was served basking in a bowl of curry flavored goodness, and came with a side of ground plantains (pictured). My chicken was absolutely amazing, falling off the bone, and was served with a side (actually a large plate) of red beans and rice. By the time we made it through an appetizer and small salads and our meal, there was no room left for dessert. Next time...

So to sum it up: excellent food, excellent service, excellent hospitality. Oh, and the bill was under 35 bucks for everything. Which by today's Chicago standards is pretty good I think. You could just go and get the stewed chicken and leave with a giant meal for under $10. And I got to meet momma, who is super sweet.

So here's the address: 2516 W 63rd | Chicago, IL
If you are too shy to go by yourself, call me, I'll go with you.

-- Post From My iPhone

Revelations and Proclamations: A Bird in the Hand

Over the past few months, I’ve been gathering photos of things in my hands. Yes, it’s just what it sounds like. The idea is that to really connect with life and death most people use their hands. We pick things up, we feel them, we hold them, we break them. So I thought I would start to photograph things that I found, caught, picked up, and held in my hand. Most of these things have been fish or animals or dead birds. There's a pattern here I think. As always, my inner naturalist controls my hands, but I’ll be working this into a painting somehow in the near future.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
