Ridicule is quite different than constructive criticism or gentle teasing. There is a sharp blade behind it, a maliciousness that cannot be ignored. There is NOTHING constructive in ridicule–and it isn’t designed to be constructive. The purpose of ridicule is to destroy any appearance of legitimacy in the ridiculed person or argument.

We often ridicule that which we do not understand, or that which opposes our own thoughts and beliefs–or that which makes us uncomfortable. Sometimes people ridicule people they envy, or people of whom they are secretly jealous.
